Just in time for Valentine's Day, and on the heels of The Boy and the Heron's win at the Golden Globes and nomination for Best Animated Feature at the upcoming Academy Awards next month, Adrian and Emma take their time to discuss the works of Studio Ghibli and one of its founders, Hayao Miyazaki, using two of their films, Spirited Away and Ponyo, to talk about how and why the legendary studio is celebrated for its trademark style of storytelling. Later on, Adrian goes through the anime wormhole to tell the 5ecret 5tory of the 5tar 5ystem, Interstella 5555, a collaboration between storied French EDM duo Daft Punk and another Japanese studio, Toei Animation, and tells Emma of its unique position in Japanese anime, in music, and as a part of Daft Punk's legacy.

what? To a programmer or the company IT guy, what would an Iso look like? In the original film, lightcycles and disc games were actual video games being run in the system, so is The Grid running video games too? Who is playing them? Nothing is really established about this world that our characters are living and fighting in. iso programs, so if not, what are they? Spontaneously generated Programs that do. How does The Grid function? Are all of these people you see around it Programs? What do they do? What about Clu's legions of soldiers? What is their function in a working computer system? If Clu is changing Programs into soldiers, what does that mean for the system? I assume the Isos aren't. TRON had a very clearly developed world and strong ideas about what Programs were, how they related to Users, what the threat posed by the MCP was, and that little bit of Messianic religious theme thrown in for good measure. The problem is that it doesn't seem to know why it exists or what it wants to say. It has a slick, stylish Apple Store aesthetic and it is hard to go wrong with a soundtrack by Daft Punk (if you want a real treat, track down Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, an anime film by the legendary Leiji Matsumoto set to the entirety of Daft Punk's album Discovery). TRON: Legacy is some beautiful candy for the eyes and ears. This really comes out when considering Legacy's weaknesses. TRON: Legacy, on the other hand, comes off like executives at Team Disney sitting around a boardroom and deciding what IP they can dust off for the young male 9 to 34 demographic groups. One gets the sense of the team at Monolith Productions looking for a new concept and turning with high fidelity to a favourite childhood film. Between the two attempts, TRON 2.0 comes off as more legitimate. Not to mention that someone already made about the best conceptual sequel to TRON that anyone could hope for: The Matrix. It only ever achieved cult status to begin with, and the heat had long since gone off of it. Add in religious overtones and about 12 minutes of genuine 1982 vintage CGI, and you have the ingredients of a pretty important film if not an overwhelmingly good one.ĭeveloping a sequel several decades after the original film is a daunting prospect. It sluggishly plods along its story, but as an early attempt to develop a Sci-Fi concept about these magical new boxes called "computers" and those crazy "video games" that kids these days are playing, TRON does a pretty good job. I appreciate them for what they are, and a disingenuous 30-year-after-the-fact sequel certainly helped me to appreciate what the original film was doing even more. Sure I have DVDs of the original and TRON: Legacy, and I've seen all of TRON: Uprising, and I recently played the Legacy prequel game TRON: Evolution, which in turn led me around to finally playing TRON 2.0, which I had heard so much about for so long, and I've found where you can play the original TRON and Discs of TRON arcade games online, and I've considered a TRON Halloween costume several times, but I wouldn't consider myself, y'know, a real die hard devotee of the franchise. How a digital creation can translate into an analogue body.I don't consider myself any kind of big TRON fan. Instead this album is about how music can make you feel. Ranging from fast paced and aggressive to slower and more contemplative this is not about genre, nor is it about style. The album is comprised of 24 tracks, with each track name giving a slight/blatant hint at what part of the story each is meant to represent. Taking inspiration from the elements and instruments that were used in the original score but with a few modern techniques, styles, effects and my own spin on implementation. In my head this is what I would have done with the soundtrack to the second film in the Tron series. This album acts as a direct continuation to my album ‘The Grid’ from 2016, however it also acts as a spiritual replacement soundtrack to Tron Legacy. It seems we will need every scrap of help to traverse this cyber universe, find the creator of The Grid and escape alive. With corrupted creations and unique beings born inside this digital world it is hard to decipher friend from foe. This cyber frontier is filled with unknown dangers that must be fought to survive. Soon we are pulled into a digital world, one which has become more advanced than we could have ever imagined. Haunted by this mystery we are drawn to a familiar place, The Arcade. In 1989 the creator of The Grid disappears.

FLASHBack: Week 71 - Work It! - Olskoo NES

This week on FLASHBack, we're taking a look at a Flash set to the fourth track from Daft Punk's second album, Discovery: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. The original Music Video for the song was taken from the 2003 Feature-Length Anime that was made for the album, Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. Interstella 5555, the story of an alien rock band, was produced by Toei Animation, and featured character designs by Leiji Matsumoto, the man responsible for such landmark classic Animes from the 1970s such as Space Battleship Yamato (known to Western Audiences as Star Blazers, and rebooted for modern audiences as Space Battleship Yamato 2199 in 2012), Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Galaxy Express 999.   However, when Tom "evilzug" Mannino made his take on the song: Work It! - Olskoo NES, which was released on Newgrounds 20 August 2001, Interstella 5555 was only starting production, so instead, he drew his visuals from something a little more down to Earth: the 8-Bit Nintendo Entertainment System game River City Ransom (with a few sprites from a Barbie game thrown in for good measure). This was not the first time he'd used gamesprites from that NES Beat-Em-Up title, as at the beginning of August he had uploaded a test of lip syncing sprite animations to audio. On 8 September 2001, evilzug updated the Flash on Newgrounds to be a loop, because, in his own words: "For those of you who contacted me complaining that this flash was ruining your life, because you couldn't stop clicking on it to watch, I've fixed that for you. I've made it an endless loop now, so it'll keep your hands free." The Flash remained on Newgrounds until sometime between 6 November 2016 and 14 November 2016 when it was removed by the Moderation Team (possibly in response to a DCMA takedown request). It still remains on Albino Blacksheep, where it had been uploaded 2 april 2006.

  Evilzug was not the only person to have the idea to put Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger over an 8-Bit fighting game sprite dancing; on 23 October 2004, YTMND user thenixfactor released Ninja Works It, which was the Daft Punk song set to an animated GIF of gamesprite from the Apple II game Kareteka. (Random Fact: Both the Apple II series and the original NES shared the same model of CPU chip: the MOS Technology 6502.) YTMND doesn't get mentioned much on FLASHBack, despite being a rich source of viral content for the early web, because while it did use the Flash plugin, they only used it for audio playback, instead using animated GIFs for visuals. This was one of the most popular YTMNDs, earning Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger a spot on the second YTMND soundtrack and the Kareteka Ninja the cover of volume 13 of the same.   Both of these early celebrations of Daft Punk's song laid the groundwork of embedding the tune into the internet's consciousness, so that when YouTube videos became the main means of distributing funny viral content, such memetic hits as Daft Hands from 6 June 2007, Awesome Dance - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger from the 25th of that same month, and Daft Punk Girls - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger from 15 February 2011 would be propelled to hundreds of thousands of views, or in the case of Daft Hands, seventy-one million views.   That about wraps it up for this week. Interstella 5555 The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (part 2)

So I did my video essay about this anime, and there are a few musical things I would like to talk about, so I consider this the second part of that video.

This is an anime film and its soundtrack is the musical album Discovery composed by Daft Punk. As I mentioned in the video, the duo said that they took their childhood as an inspiration for this project. I also said this was important because it is what made them compose around this sci-fi conceptualization related to anime they watched when they were kids (Leiji Matsumoto being a big inspiration for them and also, being part of the team that put together this film).

They didn’t only work with their childhood hero and produced an anime film which was a criticism to the musical industry, with a thematic and visual treatment related to the anime they watched as kids, but they also did fun things in the music itself. There is a high amount of sampling in the album, they took music from their childhood (once again) and used it for Discovery. This was completely intentional, they didn’t intend to hide this so they openly talk about the samples they used: part of George Duke’s “I Love You More” is featured in “Digital Love”; Edwin Birdsong’s “Cola Bottle Baby” was sampled for “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”; The Imperials’ song “Can You Imagine” is used for “Crescendolls”; Barry Manilow’s “Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed” is credited for “Superheroes”, etc. But there’s an interesting twist in this sampling, they didn’t just take the part they wanted and edited or manipulated it to have a new meaning and artistic treatment, actually, most of the times they used someone else’s work, they recorded themselves playing it (for example, on their live dj performances) and use that material on the album. That’s quite exceptional, and it was a form of owning the piece and also give the whole work cohesion in terms of registration and quality. There are a lot of theories of other samples used all around the album, but not all of them are confirmed.

Besides this, there is also a conceptual weight around this project for Daft Punk, because they stated that, during the recording of the album, there were electronic failures that lead them to become a pair or robots. Since then, they’ve never had a show or an interview without their helmets and costumes, separating their private lives even more from such a famous musical project. Leiji Matsumoto helped them create this visual work around themselves and their music, they actually appear on Interstella briefly.

I really love how Daft Punk did things, it really made me sad to find out they were splitting up, but I’ll never forget this project and everything around it.

Friday 4th December: Interstella5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (2003)- Voyager segment.

Saturday 5th December: My sister, Momoko (2003)- Riki and his classmates run the annual school athletic tournament for Momoko.

Sunday 6th December: Adachi-ga hara (1991)- Yuukei recounts his past to the old witch, as her final request before he kills her.

The animated movie uses the same imaginary world of japaniese manga, which is used in the video clips for “Discovery”. On the 15th of march 2005 the “Human After All” LP goes on sale. The record is named the worst in the Daft Punk history. A huge tourne seems to rescue the image of the record. The band appears in high-tech robots suits with huge light-pyramids in background.

Es curioso que la inteligencia artificial de Román resultó más avanzada de lo que esperaban (hurra por Zach). Tenían planeado que aprendiera y evolucionara, pero no pensaron que fuera tan rápido ni tan eficiente. En este momento Román tiene 7 años desde su creación; el estimado para que llegara a este punto de desarrollo emocional era de 16 años.

Como dice, al principio no lo toma como un problema, su prioridad era mantener Industrias Varmitech. Después de 4 años la eficiencia de Román hace que tome control de la empresa por completo. Zach, ahora con tiempo libre, empieza a pasar más tiempo lejos (muchas veces con Chris porque esto es chrizach lol). Este cambio de liderazgo resulta en que Industrias Varmitech deja de ser el enemigo principal de los Kratt, dándole también a Chris tiempo libre.

Ambos empiezan a tener una vida más doméstica. Sin Román.

Nunca dijo nada. No pensaba que debía. No era relevante a la empresa.

Pero el sentimiento sigue creciendo.

Es irracional, Román lo sabe. Es un robot, no sirve para nada más que trabajar. ¿Entonces por qué quiere más?

Hasta que llegamos a este punto. Se rompe. No entiende, no encuentra una respuesta lógica.

Y por supuesto que no la encuentra. Le falta información.

Cuando decidieron hacer a Román, ni Zach ni Chris tenian una idea clara de lo que querían... Y puede que se les haya olvidado explicarle algunos detalles sobre su existencia a Román. Sí, fue hecho para trabajar en Industrias Varmitech, pero ese no era su propósito. Fue hecho para crecer, para aprender, para vivir.

Román no entiende, pero algo en su programación se calma al escuchar eso. Se disculpa por no reportar estos problemas antes. Recibe como respuesta un fuerte abrazo de ambos, y la promesa de jamás hacerlo sentir de esa manera otra vez.
