I know, there's the possibility that Tochiro COULD be a 30th century reincarnation of Nobotta's spirit, BUT....
There's also the possibility (and somewhat common assumption??) that Nobotta is Tochiro's literal ancestor. Like, genetic ancestor.
Which means that this fella...
Tumblr media
This motherfucker living a lonely life in a run-down boarding house struggling to make ends meet and ends up cooking the mushrooms growing out of his pants sitting all wet and musty in his closet...
Tumblr media
Eventually ended up with a chick who ACTUALLY loves him and ISN'T just using him or getting scared off by his antics.
And apparently, according to Leiji himself, after the events of the manga, Nobotta ended up working as a whaler and made actual money from then onward and even went back to the boarding house to meet ol Mr. Bird again. Good for him. ^w^
And he also apparently wrote a follow-up about one of Nobotta's descendants at some point. So yeah, he DID eventually have a sex life. He eventually got to bangin' and had at least one kid!
I mean hey, if Tochiro can end up having a daughter with a badass pirate lady like Emeraldas in the 30th century, Nobotta can someday have a beautiful loving wife/girlfriend in the 1970s as well. Anything is possible.

Dishonorable mention for changing her nickname from Doctorine to just “doctor.” Doctorine is such a cute name but it also shows her pride as a doctor. In Japanese “Doctorine” sounds like “Catherine,” which is a name closely associated with classic romance novels and shojo manga from the 60s and 70s - think Rose of Versaille. It makes her sound both really old fashioned and also girlish. Even though most of that context would be lost on English readers, we would at least have been able to understand that Kureha likes to go by a nickname. When that nickname is turned into a title it makes her seem more like a stickler for the rules which she definitely is not.
With the additional context from the SBS that appeared right before this chapter, we can now understand that when Kureha asks “are you happy?” she’s really asking “how are you feeling?” Or, we would have, if they hadn't butchered the translation...

To the anonymous who sent me an ask how long it took me to learn how to draw, and about anatomy in particular... your ask got eaten by tumblr mobile, but I'll do my best to answer your original question! ;;
I'm pretty sure I started really getting into drawing around the early 2000s... which should give you some idea about how old I am and how long I've been practicing. I started out by imitating my favourite anime and manga styles (mostly shojo manga) and building from there.
This was around the time that manga started getting super popular, and so a lot of How To Draw Manga books from japanese studios were localized. So I grabbed onto every resource I could find and used those to essentially teach myself.
Here's a small part of my collection - I'm pretty sure I've had these for so long they've gone completely out of print.
Tumblr media
How long did it take me to get to my current level? Quite a while admittedly, and I'm still learning. There were times when I stopped drawing for months at a time, which probably delayed my progress. But I still made progress regardless!
As for anatomy, I am hardly an expert, and I'm still learning! In fact, I keep anatomical details to a minimum. When I draw, I mainly focus on getting the proportions correct first and foremost.
Here is a super quick crash course on proportions for standing poses!
Tumblr media
I would say that once you are comfortable with establishing the proportions and the basic shapes of your character, you can start looking up references and guides for anatomy! There are a lot of resources online, and definitely at a higher level of correctness and expertise than myself.
As for improving, it does take work, and it does take time. But even the master artists keep developing their craft well into their 50s, 60s and 70s. It's easy to worry about getting older while trying to get better at drawing. But consider how exciting it would be to find out how much progress you'll achieve after a certain number of years! All it takes is to stay motivated, continue practicing, have an open mind, and be willing to learn new things all the time.
Hope that helps a bit! :3 And I hope you do decide to keep on doing art!

Academic Books on JP Pop Culture and Beyond
Tumblr media
A list of nonfiction books I’ve enjoyed, largely around Japanese comics but also other literature, fandoms and even one book on a fashion I love.
Fanning the Flames: Fans and Consumer Culture in Contemporary Japan edited by William W. Kelly
Exploring different Japanese fandoms such as music, baseball or rakugo this older book from 2004 has one particular essay I still find memorable despite its age. Girls and Women Getting Out of Hand: The Pleasure and Politics of Japan's Amateur Comics Community by translator Rachel Thorn, which she has also put up on her blog.
Manga: 60 Years of Japanese Comics by Paul Gravett
An overview of the history of modern Japanese comics this title was notably banned in libraries in a California county in 2006. All because it chose to not shy away from including a few pages on the genre of eromanga.
One Thousand Years of Manga Paperback by Brigitte Koyama-Richard
Originally published in French this broader look at the artistic development of Japanese sequential art has also been translated to English by Daniel Radzinowicz, and there’s a newer 2022 edition.
Boys Love Manga and Beyond: History, Culture, and Community in Japan edited by Mark McLelland, Kazumi Nagaike, Katsuhiko Suganuma, James Welker
With a wide-raging collection of essays this 2015 book, nominated for an Eisner Award for best Academic/Scholarly work, is still an informative title available in English on the phenomenon of boys love.
Queer Transfigurations: Boys Love Media in Asia edited by James Welker
Edited by a professor who was also a contributor in the previously mentioned Boys Love Manga and Beyond, this 2022 essay collection looks at the expansion of boys love media across Asia.
Manga in America: Transnational Book Publishing and the Domestication of Japanese Comics by Casey Brienza
If one hasn’t been curious already, any reader of Japanese comics in English could use a look at this 2016 book on the processes and people that brings their favourite material across borders.
Passionate Friendship: The Aesthetics of Girl’s Culture in Japan by Deborah M. Shamoon
While shoujo manga is not just romance comics, this is still a lovely book from 2012 that looks at the 20th century development of various girls’ literature in Japan.
Age of Shojo by Hiromi Tsuchiya Dollase
As well this 2019 book covers the creation of girls’ fiction in Japan, from the turn of the century over 80 years and the at times expression of transgressive ideas.
International Perspectives on Shojo and Shojo Manga: The Influence of Girl Culture edited by Masami Toku
Published in 2015 this not to be missed collection of essays, also with interviews of several Japanese comics artists (including as Takemiya Keiko and Hagio Moto) and their work in girls’ comics.
The End of Cool Japan: Ethical, Legal, and Cultural Challenges to Japanese Popular Culture edited by Mark McLelland
Academics from four continents of the Anglophone world, excepting an inclusion from China, begins to reveal just how convoluted and varied the legal, ethical and cultural questions around Japanese comics and animation are both within and outside Japan’s borders in this 2016 collection of writings.
So Pretty / Very Rotten: Comics and Essays on Lolita Fashion and Cute Culture by Jane Mai and An Nguyen
This 2017 book on Lolita fashion is what I recommend on this sometimes misunderstood subculture still found in street fashion to depictions in media.
The History of Hentai Manga: An Expressionist Examination of EroManga by Kimi Rito
Translated to English by Molly Rabbit in 2021, this is a tenderly dense examination of expressions in a (in)famous genre by a Japanese media critic.
Manga in Libraries: A Guide for Teen Librarians by Jillian Rudes
With Japanese comics popularity only increasing a New York librarian has a 2023 book out to help better understand, value, include, advise, and use comics from Japan for readers, especially teens.
CBLDF Presents Manga: Introduction, Challenges, and Best Practices edited by Melinda Beasi
Along with popularity unfortunately comes book challenges and bans. Though this guide from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is from 2013, it still contains beneficial information for anyone involved with anti-censorship work.

Une histoire d'ombre : détails
synopsis:
A young woman goes to a bal. There, she meets the young prince and dance with him through the night. When midnight hits, the evening goes downhill, and chaos ensues.
note d'intention:
we want this animation to be a parody of the 60s shojo mangas (candy candy-aoi haru ride- lovely complex) while still giving the same aesthetics. The tone of the play should be very light, it doesn't deal with serious/adult topics the goal is to make it suitable for all ages, funny and witty with clever (or not!) jokes and references to animation and movies (shrek, cinderella), animes (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure), and history (victorian era).
script :
The Countess Tamago is invited to the engagement party of the Duke Dio and the Princess, soon to be Queen, Victoria.
The evening goes naturally and Tamago-chan dances with the promised, but when midnight strikes she suddenly takes over.
The duke goes in pursuit of the lady, and follows the mysterious cracks of eggshells scattered across the garden.
When he finds her, he sees her sitting on a marble bench but above all- transformed into an egg.
That said, it does not hinder his love and he leans in to kiss her- but the princess finds them and interrupts their romantic moment.
Dio and she argue and end up in a dramatic fight. Dio wins, Tama-chan and her beloved finally kiss and Dio turns into an egg as well.
