@LaShondaKatrice Barnett writes historical fiction act of political resistance. It's an HONOR, not a burden to go into the archives and tell these stories. Our ancestors got a raw deal, an honor to write their history #WRBGFEST #651arts #blackhistory (at BRIC)

Tonight we said farewell to @shaywafer and celebrate her leadership at @651arts She’s moving back to #LosAngelrs but this is no way shape or form of a goodbye. Shay was my first boss in #NewYork She hired me as the marketing manager and helped me navigate the world of the #Arts and #nonprofitorganizations We were both finding our footing in #Brooklyn and I leaned on her from everything work related to my personal issues of trying to find an apartment and dating (we need more wine to talk about those good ole days). I am so grateful that Shay took a chance on me. Through her I was able to meet so many dynamic people from @lovejonespr to @aaronlmck to @rasupreme to @annaglass My life in New York is so much richer because of this woman in this photo. I am forever grateful to you, Shay Wafer. Honored to call you friend. See you in LA soon! #mytribe #grateful #alwaysmyboss #onwardandupward #friendselevatingfriends (at Gotham Market at The Ashland) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtM-8V0hlQh/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=hrft93o6vye5

Introductions by Mikki Shepard and Sheila Lewandowski | March 25th Gala
“Here are some of the reasons why:
[BAX] values diversity – it doesn’t pay lip service or has followed the fad of late. It has always been diverse in the true sense of the word – racially, culturally, sexual orientation, gender identification, age and aesthetic traditions.  BAX reflects its community. It’s a safe space – Anyone who crosses the BAX threshold is valued for who you are and for your ideas – the message is - YOU CAN BE YOU Provides a support system in deep and meaningful ways for artists, faculty, students, staff and volunteers. It’s an exchange – of ideas, disciplines - it values process over the end product that allows for this exchange.  The exchange includes local, national and international artists in dialogue with community residents in a diverse range of ways, often designed by the participants themselves. And, as one writer said, “BAX made sure that one person would never speak for everyone.”
One true sign of a real community grounded organization is that it's community feels a sense of ownership.
You, as part of the BAX family really do own it as demonstrated by the artist who continue to return to their BAX home. BAX reflects its leader – Marya BAX is grounded in its vision, committed, courageous - it's generous, honest, authentic, inspiring and nurturing.
Marya as one writer noted – is a pragmatic earth mother and her family, the BAX family extends far and wide. Thank you Marya - I am grateful to be part of the BAX family.”
-- Mikki Shepard,  Executive Producer of The Apollo Theater from 2009 – 2016, Founder and Executive Producer of 651Arts.
“Marya, you are a founder and you redefine the term. I am a founder and I look to you to learn about what you built, how you built it and what you will leave behind when you go and how you do it all with love, care and great organizational skills. For over 25 years BAX, under your leadership, has let the needs of performing artists serve as the foundation for programming that has helped to define its local community and the City as a haven, a sanctuary or creative and critical thinking and doing.”
--Sheila Lewandowski, co-founder and Executive Director of The Chocolate Factory

Essay: What sparked #TripleConsciousness
I was recently asked to write an essay for brooklynmuseum to give context on the inspiration, inception, and development of #TripleConsciousness. For more information about the program, click here: https://tripleconsciousness.splashthat.com/
---
"In 2013, I attended a Park Armory work-in-progress presentation of Ralph Lemon’s Scaffold Room, produced by MAPP International Productions. The performance addressed ideas of the archetypal Black female in America culture, and I found myself experiencing various streams of consciousness. The ideas were drawn from history, stereotypes, pop culture, and science fiction with source materials like Moms Mabley, Beyoncé, Kathy Acker and Samuel R. Delany.
I was left with a question: “What impact does the Black woman’s image in pop culture have on America?” I explored and discussed the idea for several months before approaching Shay Wafer of 651 ARTS with the idea of producing a discussion series about Black Femininity. Shay explained that 651 ARTS was producing the Geneva Project directed by Charlotte Brathwaite, which also seeks to examine black femininity through the lens of tradition and cultural remembrance.
We decided to expand on the concept to include artists and cultural thinkers who focus on themes of Black female identity. Ebony Noelle Golden was commissioned to curate conversations that would broaden our ideas of Black women in America. She added deeper questions that helped anchor the discussion and enlisted the participation of powerful women who rarely appear together on these types of forums. These shared efforts make Triple Consciousness a collaborative platform for exercising the democratic voice in reimagining Black female identity in America."
