The Bog Gets a Checkup
Drum roll, please...
Water chemistry!
Lake health!
Startling the neighbors by taking a turkey baster and going nuts on the Bog!
This week had it all and I'm here to report that, despite the neighbors threatening to call the police on me (note: they do not own the Bog. i wasn't anywhere near their property. They're just like this.), I put together a preliminary health check on the bog!
I will preface this in big red letters: I am not a biochemist. I’m not even a biologist. I’m just some guy with a few fancy test kits they use on their fish tank to check water quality. I followed the outline of the EPA’s National Lakes Assessment (found here: https://nationallakesassessment.epa.gov/webreport/) and a few other resources. Note that I am not entirely sure what the bog qualifies as, and I don’t have the tools to measure the depth of the bog in most spots, but it seems to fit the bill for this survey. I also, for the sake of ease, did my best to translate these findings into a 1-10 scale, with 1 being “this water is dead” and 10 being “call Gwyneth Paltrow, she can bottle and sell this water as a magical health supplement”.
TL;DR: the bog is being smothered by garbage and dying organic matter.
Here’s what I put together:
The most obvious measure of lake health is anthropogenic disturbance—basically, how much people have messed with the bog. The answer here is a lot. There is always trash floating in the water, stuck to the vegetation on the shores, half-buried in the muck… Which doesn’t lead to a very healthy lake. I give the Bog a 4/10 on the anthropogenic disturbance scale. It isn’t toxic sludge, but it could be kept cleaner.
Then comes something known as Secchi Depth, which is a measure of how clear the water is. It’s a really neat little tool that you lower into the water and mark when it vanishes.
Tumblr media
Reports vary, but, in general, you want to aim for a 2-meter (or 6 feet) Secchi depth to be really healthy—the Bog scored at 2 feet. Not amazing. 3/10.
Another physical aspect of lake health is water color. I pulled up a jar of the Bog and it’s the color of ginger ale. My research suggest that it’s a mix of algae and tannins—which is to be expected, considering how much plant matter is decaying in the bog.
Look at this. Ick.
Tumblr media
7/10.
Onto the chemistry! I am not a chemist, but I am a fish keeper and I do this kind of thing a lot. I pulled out my API freshwater testing kit to see what the Bog was like, and here’s what I came away with:
pH: 7.4
Square within the average range for lakes and streams, but considered a little basic for fish eggs and fry. We’ll call that a 8/10.
Ammonia: .75ppm
Not amazing. Ammonia is highly toxic, it comes from the breakdown of waste. There is a way to tell just how toxic, based on the pH and temperature, but it was a little too much math for me to manage on my own… Anyways, 5/10.
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrites are toxic too, so this is great. You get nitrites when ammonia is broken down by nitrifying bacteria, so if you have too much ammonia, you’ll usually have too many nitrites. 10/10.
Nitrates: 2.5ppm
The pretty older sister of Nitrites, when nitrites are broken down they turn into nitrates, which are less harmful. This is all part of the nitrogen cycle, which is something every aquarium owner both respects and fears. Lakes tend to do it on their own, however. 9/10
What does this all tell us?
It tells us that the Bog is low on ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) but is doing alright on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). I’m not entirely certain why that’s the case, but the Bog produces (or is supplied with) more ammonia than the AOB can consume. The reason the nitrites are there is likely due to the lack of submerged plantlife. Did I mention that there aren’t any plants in the Bog? Around it, sure, but in it? I haven’t seen anything. The entire bottom is covered in a thick layer of mulm (a mud-like substance made from decaying organic matter), which I assume has choked out the plants. Lack of plants means there’s nothing to eat up all those nitrates.
Anyhow.
Phosphates.
Phosphates are an interesting measure of lake health. Essentially, phosphates are nutrients and having too many of them can lead to fluctuations in algae (the Bog has incredible algae blooms every fall—and it reeks) and even the development of blue-green algae, which creates cyanobacteria, which is very, very deadly.
So I tested for both phosphates and blue-green algae.
And there were 0 phosphates.
No blue-green algae either, which is nice, but no phosphates is unusual. It explains the lack of plant growth, since phosphates are required for plants to exist, but it doesn’t explain the insane algae blooms we get every year.
I can speculate that those blooms could coincide with people using fertilizer on their lawns to prep for winter, the runoff from which might cause a spike that encourages the algae, but I can’t test that. It could also be a cumulative effect from the runoff throughout the summer. I don’t know. It was unusual. The test, which should have turned a nice seafoam green, was essentially clear. Weird days.
But! Good news! No blue-green algae, which means no cyanobacteria! The test for that was, in short, terrifying. You put water in a tube and then the tube explodes. It’s only BARELY mentioned that this will happen. It gets lava hot, spews boiling water everywhere, and smells like demons. But no cyanotoxins! Hooray! 10/10 for that! 5/10 for the phosphates.
Let’s talk about the big boy now. The heavy hitter. The measurement that is first on the list of lake health measurements: dissolved oxygen.
According to the USGS, “The oxygen content of surface waters of normal salinity in the summer is typically more than 8 milligrams per liter (8 mg/L); when oxygen concentrations are less than 2 mg/L, the water is defined as hypoxic (CENR, 2000). The hypoxia kills many organisms that cannot escape, and thus the hypoxic zone is informally known as the “dead zone.””
The lake is sitting at a 6 mg/l DO. Which is low. Why? Probably the lack of plants. This explains the algal blooms, at least, and why the lake smells like death on very hot days, when dissolved oxygen would be at its lowest. It could also suggest an excess of bacteria.
4/10.
65/100. A failing grade, but it could be worse! You can definitely pull that up by doing some extra credit! The EPA scale would likely call it "fair". I was able to use this nifty tool to look at some of my measurements and compare them to other lakes in my area: https://owshiny.epa.gov/nla-lake-context-tool/. This is what popped up for Secchi depth:
Tumblr media
I was also able to reference some other data in terms of percentiles using this: https://nationallakesassessment.epa.gov/dashboard/?&view=indicator&studypop=al&subpop=epa+region+3&label=pe&condition=good&diff=2v3 If you're looking to check the health of your local body of water (assuming it hasn't already been done! You can check for that too!), I highly recommend poking around the EPA's resources.
If the Bog were one of my tanks, it'd be getting a thorough cleaning, an airstone, and a bunch of live plants.

Simple Ways to Protect Water Quality: Great Lakes Edition
Tumblr media
1. Proper Waste Disposal:
Dispose of trash, plastic bottles, and other waste in designated bins. Litter can end up in waterways and harm aquatic life. Remember to recycle whenever possible and reduce the use of single-use plastics.
2. Responsible Chemical Use:
Avoid using excessive amounts of household chemicals like cleaning products and pesticides. These chemicals can find their way into the water through drains and harm aquatic organisms. Look for eco-friendly alternatives or reduce chemical usage altogether.
3. Conserve Water:
Be mindful of water usage at home. Turn off faucets when not in use, fix leaky pipes, and take shorter showers. Conserving water reduces the strain on freshwater sources and helps maintain water quality.
4. Preserve Natural Vegetation:
If you live near a body of water, maintaining a buffer zone of natural vegetation along its banks can help filter out pollutants and prevent erosion. Avoid removing plants or trees near water bodies, as they provide habitat for aquatic life and stabilize the soil.
5. Be Mindful of Fertilizer Use:
If you have a garden or lawn, be cautious when using fertilizers. Excess fertilizer can wash into nearby water bodies, causing harmful algal blooms and negatively impacting water quality. Follow instructions carefully and consider using organic alternatives.
6. Participate in Cleanup Activities:
Join local community groups or organizations that organize cleanups near water bodies. These activities not only help in removing trash and pollutants but also raise awareness about the importance of water conservation.
7. Educate Others:
Spread the word about the significance of protecting water quality. Share what you have learned with your friends, family, and classmates. Encourage others to adopt water-friendly practices and explain why it matters.
In conclusion, we have the power to make a difference in protecting the water quality of the Great Lakes or any nearby body of water. By following these simple actions like proper waste disposal, responsible chemical use, water conservation, preserving natural vegetation, being mindful of fertilizer use, participating in cleanup activities, and educating others, we can contribute to a healthier and cleaner environment for ourselves and future generations. Let's take the first steps towards becoming responsible stewards of our water resources!

How to clean your house like professionals
If you only have two hours to clean your house, you should get a mop, bucket, sponges, dusters, floor cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, and other cleaning tools. Bring a bucket with you and put them in it when you're done.
So, you won't have to go back and forth to get cleaning supplies. This will save you time and energy.
1. The best way to clean is by going from task to task instead of room to room.
The best way to clean is from top to bottom and back to front. Use this method to clean up any dust or dirt that falls from the roof or the back.
2. Do you know where to start when you need to clean your dirty house?
The best place to start is by getting rid of any clutter, like books, computers, toys, etc.
The picture of the area that needs to be cleaned helps you finish the job faster and better.
If you want to get the most out of your cleaning money, it's best to use a deep cleaning product on the toughest stains first. For these things to work, they need time. After that, you can start using the goods in the bathroom.
3. The first step is to use products made for cleaning.
After getting rid of the clutter, use various cleaning products to ensure the space is clean.
Most of the time, deep cleaning is needed in the following places:
1. The seat on the toilet.
2. Bathroom and kitchen sinks
Either the tub or the shower.
Wear rubber gloves because you will be working with things that could hurt you.
The chemicals you use will need time to break down and remove any stains.
After about 20 to 30 minutes, you should be able to wipe off any stains without using a stiff brush to scrape them off. Let some liquid laundry bleach sit in the water for a few minutes before draining and cleaning the sink to get rid of any stubborn stains.
4. Use a vacuum to clean
Remove dust from furniture, lamps, and other things before you vacuum so that the chemicals in the cleaning products don't soak up the stains. Get rid of things you don't need and clean your furniture and electronics carefully. After dusting, it's a good idea to vacuum the main parts of your home.
First, you should vacuum your furniture, and then you should vacuum your floors. Next, vacuum the hard-to-reach places, like the bottoms of chairs, tables, and sofas.
5. Give your kitchen a thorough cleaning.
Before cleaning the kitchen, you should do the dishes and put them away in the cabinet. Then, you can put dirty dishes in a dishwasher while you clean the rest of the kitchen.
You can also clean your kitchen sink and counter with an all-purpose cleaner.
Wipe the shelves down with a damp cloth to get rid of anything that has gone bad. Sticky or dirty shelves can be cleaned with a light soap or detergent.
If the drawers are dirty, you should wash them, too.
The plate can be removed from the microwave and washed in warm water with a bit of dish soap or detergent. Finally, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to eliminate any last bits of dirt.
6. The floors need to be mopped.
After dusting and cleaning, the last step is to mop the floors. How you mop will depend on the type of floor, you have. How much water to use and whether or not to use other liquids, like vinegar, depends on the type of wood you're working with.
Don't forget to clean the floor in the bathroom as well. By doing these things at the end of the cleaning process, you can avoid having wet floors in other rooms, which can be dangerous.
7. Get rid of the trash.
Now is the time to get rid of all the trash you have in your trash can. When you're done, you should empty all of your trash cans and garbage cans and put them in new bags.
Use three trash bags to protect your trash cans even more.
Once you've lined the bins, you won't have to worry about doing it again every time.
8. Wipe the windows down
Cleaning the windows is one of the things that takes the most time, but it is also one of the easiest things to do. Just use a bottle of window cleaner to spray each window and a paper towel to wipe it down.
9. Clean the walls and roof.
Cleaning is about a lot more than just floors and furniture.
Take care of your walls and ceiling as well. Or you can contact Professional Cleaning Services Santa Cruz.
You can get rid of dust with a microfiber mop and stains with warm water and cleaning chemicals. You can wear an old T-shirt instead of a mop if you don't have one.

Living sustainably can seem like a very daunting task. Going completely zero waste while living in modern society is nearly impossible without an entire lifestyle overhaul. On top of that, 71% of all pollution on the earth since 1988 is caused by only 100 companies according to the Carbon Major Report. Especially during a pandemic, when we're all using disposable PPE and cleaning supplies, it's very difficult to feel like we can truly have an impact. However, if we all take little steps towards a sustainable future, we can eventually push those 100 companies towards serving our interests and allowing future generations to have a healthier Earth to live on.
So I came up with a little challenge. Think of as many eco friendly and sustainable things you do regularly and write them down. Then come up with a few goals to help you be even more sustainable and write them down! You may find that you're actually doing more than you think 😉
I'll go first! Here are all the things that I could come up with that I do regularly to practice sustainability:
1. Living on my college campus and walking to class
2. Supporting sustainable skin/hair care brands (Krave beauty, Ethique, Lush)
3. Being intentional about the skincare/makeup products I buy by making sure they will actually add value to my routine and that I will use them up entirely before buying a replacement
4. Using reef safe, non nano mineral sunscreens
5. Using a plastic free shampoo bar
6. Using reusable cotton rounds for toner/makeup removal
7. Turning off the faucet while brushing my teeth
8. Turning off lights when I'm not using a room
9. Using energy saving bulbs in my lamp and using that in my dorm as my primary light source (as well as natural lighting from the windows) instead of the overhead lighting
10. Not idling my car (turning off the engine when waiting in line at the drive through or simply parking to do a pickup or dining in when there isn't a pandemic)
11. Getting food from the farmers market and local bakers (buying local and in season)
12. Prioritizing organically and locally grown food at the regular grocery store
13. Eating fewer snack foods that are packaged in plastic and opting for more fruits or fresh baked snacks
14. Consciously minimising food waste by being intentional about the food I buy and finishing my leftovers
15. Using reusable grocery bags
16. Using tupperwares and reusable silicone stasher bags instead of plastic ziplock
17. Saving old bread bags to store other foods in later
18. Recycling everything that can be recycled (and cleaning it first!)
19. Using old salsa jars as water glasses and to store food
20. Cooking my own meals instead of buying premade
21. Going meatless
22. Using reusable water bottles/mugs/smoothie bottles
23. Using reusable straws (even for boba!)
24. When at a restaurant, being sure to ask if they will be putting a straw in your drink and if they will, asking them to withhold it
25. When at a restaurant or cafe, asking for less or no ice in my drinks (surprisingly, ice takes up a huge amount of energy and it's mainly a US thing to have ice in our drinks all the time)
26. Taking my own reusable cutlery set everywhere to avoid using disposable plastic cutlery
27. Using bar soap instead of liquid hand soap to go plastic free
28. Eco friendly house and glass cleaners in reusable bottles with plastic free refills (Blueland)
29. Using reusable rags to clean surfaces instead of disposable wipes
30. Plastic free laundry detergent (Dropps)
31. Using reusable wool balls instead of disposable dryer sheets
32. Plastic free dishwasher detergent (Trader Joe's powder detergent in a cardboard box)
33. Using notebooks from previous classes for new classes up before buying new notebooks
34. Buying/renting used textbooks (to avoid having new ones printed) or ebook versions (for the same reason plus avoiding shipping)
35. Using recycled pens (made from plastic water bottles, Amazon) *yes, maybe pencils would be better but they contribute to deforestation so it's a tossup imo
36. Supporting sustainable clothing brands that use recycled fabric/recycled plastic as fabric, water saving methods, etc instead of "Fast fashion" brands (Manakai swimwear, Roxy)
37. Supporting environmental protection and cleanup organizations such as the National Parks Service and 4 Ocean
38. (At home, done by my family) using a low-flow toilet
39. (At home, done by my family) not using pesticides or herbicides in our yard/garden and only using natural fertilizers like tagro (and sparingly, to avoid lake eutrophication)
40. Taking the time to educate myself and others about environmental issues and steps we can all take towards sustainability
Improvements and future eco swaps I can make!
1. Eco friendly toilet paper (Who Gives A Crap recycled bamboo toilet paper) *I can't do it at my dorm, but maybe I can convince my family to get a bidet!
2. Eco friendly recycled bamboo paper towels (Who Gives A Crap), or cloth napkins
3. Asking cafes to make my drink in my reusable water bottle (at least once we're not in a pandemic)
4. Carpooling to the farmers market and local bakeries
5. Maybe getting a bicycle so that I can bike to the nearby grocery stores and my volunteer job instead of Ubering or taking a Zipcar
6. Using biodegradable trash bags instead of plastic ones
7. Using reusable/washable menstrual pads
8. Making my own salsa/guacamole to avoid more packaging
9. Unplugging electronics when they're fully charged and when I'm not using them or using a room (ex. Unplugging my lamp or pencil sharpener when they're not in use)
10. Participate in environmental protests, beach cleanups, or other local sustainability projects
Now it's your turn! How are you taking time to care for our lovely home? Make your own post or reblog with your list! 🌎🌱

Waste Management: Types and Sources of Waste
Generally, waste can be liquid or solid, both equally dangerous. These types of waste can also be grouped into organic, reusable, and recyclable waste.
Tumblr media
Here are more details:
1. Liquid waste
The waste can be non-solid, some of it can be converted to liquid waste for disposal. This includes discharges from point and non-point sources such as storm water and wastewater.
Example of liquid waste includes the washing water you use to clean your house, liquids used for cleaning in companies and residual detergents.
2. Solid waste
Solid waste management is predominantly any type of garbage that we generate in our homes and other places. This includes old car tires, old newspapers, broken furniture, and even food waste. Any waste that is not liquid can be included in this group.
3. Hazardous waste
Hazardous or harmful wastes are those that potentially affect public health or the environment. These wastes can be flammable (can be quickly affected by fire), reactive (explode easily), corrosive (easily passes through metal), or toxic (poisonous to humans and animals). In many countries, it is required by law to work alongside the appropriate authority to oversee the disposal of hazardous waste. These include fire extinguishers, old propane tanks, pesticides, equipment containing mercury (thermostats) and lamps (fluorescent bulbs), and batteries.
4. Organic waste
Organic waste comes from plants and animals, it is common to include food waste, the skin of fruits and vegetables and even dog excrement can be classified as organic waste. They are biodegradable (meaning they can be easily destroyed by other organisms over time and turned into fertilizer) Many people compost their organic waste and use it in their gardens.
5. Recyclable waste
Recycling is processing used material (waste) into new and useful products. This is done to reduce the use of raw material that you would have used. Waste that you can potentially recycle is called "recyclable waste." Aluminum products (soda cans, milk cans, among others), plastics (grocery bags, plastic bottles), glass products (wine, beer or broken bottles), paper products (used envelopes, newspapers and magazines, cardboard boxes) can be recycled and fall into this category.
Sources of waste:
1. Source of municipal waste
This includes trash or waste from homes, schools, offices, supermarkets, restaurants, and other public places.
It includes everyday items like food waste, used plastic bags, plastic soda cans and water bottles, broken furniture, cranes, product packaging, damaged appliances, and clothing.
2. Source of medical waste
Clinical and medical wastes, normally refer to waste produced in medical centers such as hospitals, clinics, surgery rooms, veterinary hospitals and laboratories. These wastes tend to be classified as hazardous waste rather than normal waste.
This group includes surgical tools, pharmaceuticals, blood, body parts, bandage supplies, needles, and syringes.
3. Sources of agricultural residues
Typically, these wastes are generated by agricultural activities. These include horticulture, seed and fruit planting, livestock raising, market gardens, and greenhouses.
Waste in this group includes empty pesticide containers, expired medicines, worms, used tires, surplus milk, cocoa containers, and corn husks.
4. Old cars
When cars are old and don't work anymore, where do they end up? Many people just leave them rusting in the field, but there is a better way to deal with them. In many cities around the world, these vehicles are sent to plants, where all removable parts are removed for recycling. The rest is flattened and shredded into pieces for recycling. The last pieces that cannot be used are sent to a landfill.
5. Sources of industrial waste
Since the industrial revolution, the rise of industries that make glass, leather, textile, food, electronics, plastic and metal products have contributed to the production of waste. Take a look around your house, everything there is probably manufacturing and possibly waste was produced as a result.
6. Sources of construction and demolition waste
Construction waste is the result of the construction of roads and buildings. Sometimes old buildings and structures are demolished to make room for new buildings. This is particularly common in old cities that are being modernized. This is called demolition waste.
Leftover waste includes concrete, wood, dirt, large boxes and plastics from building materials.
7. Sources of electronic waste
These are waste electrical and electronic equipment such as DVDs or music players, televisions, telephones, computers, vacuum cleaners and all the electronic objects in your house. Some electronic waste (such as television sets) contains lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants.
These are harmful to humans and the environment, which is why it is important that the correct authorities ensure the correct disposal of these wastes.

Chapter 4
Tumblr media
It was 7 pm when Seàn got back and Tyler was already gone, but the second he entered the living room he was greeted with an overpowering stench of air-freshener.
“Holy fuck, what is that smell???” he coughed, pinching his sensitive nose.
Mark chuckled. “Ah, Tyler accidentally knocked over a bottle of air-freshener, it broke open and spilled everywhere.” he explained.
“Ugh, it’s so strong…”
“Yeah, I’ve been trying to get the smell out all day but nothing’s working.” Mark huffed. “I’m gonna have to get some professional cleaners in here to clean it up.”
“Ah, well, I’m just gonna sit in the kitchen then for now.”
Seàn went to the kitchen and stretched carefully, his movements still somewhat stiff. The bullet wound was mostly healed at this point, but still painful. He’d taken the bandages off already and there was no more risk of Chica smelling his blood.
Mark announced at 8 pm that he’d be hitting the sack early and so Seàn went to bed then as well. He took this as the perfect opportunity to get out to the reserve early. He didn’t want a repeat of last night. Seàn put on his jean jacket and tip-toed down the stairs. Mark wasn’t out and about so he could finally use the patio doors again, which was a million times better than scaling the wall out the window.
The living room still reeked of air-freshener but he pinched his nose and made his way to the patio doors. To his surprise, there was a chain and padlock on the doors.
“What the fuck?” he mumbled to himself.
“Where are you headed?” Mark’s voice came from a chair in a shadowed corner of the room.
Seàn jumped. “M-Mark?”
The lights came on. “Yes, Mark.” He said. “Where are you going? It’s getting dark out there.”
Seàn chuckled nervously. “Just out for a breath of fresh air before bed, y’know?”
“Really?” Mark paused. “How’s your throat been feeling since you choked on that bone yesterday?” he asked.
“P-Pardon me?”
“You heard me.”
Seàn didn’t like Mark’s tone of voice.
“It’s been fine. Could… could you unlock this door?” Seàn asked.
“Now hold on, we haven’t really sat down and talked yet. Like, really talked. Come one, Seàn, sit down and let’s chat.”
Seàn was dead.
“I-I’d rather not.” Seàn said.
“Seàn. Sit.” Mark ordered, a menacing undertone to his voice.
Seàn hesitantly obeyed. He still had an hour and a half before transformation time.
“How’s your stomach been?” Mark asked.
“What?”
“I noticed you seemed a bit stiff today. Overworked those abs?”
“I… I think I must’ve slept in a weird position or something…” Seàn answered.
I’m fucking dead…
“You sure about that?” Mark asked. “I thought maybe you would’ve been injured by something. Saayyy… a silver bullet or something?”
Seàn remained silent and stared at the floor.
“Seàn, do you maybe have something to tell me?” Mark asked.
He panicked. Seàn leapt from his seat and scrambled through the kitchen and to the front door, but it was locked as well.
Mark chased after him and cornered him in the foyer with a gun pointed to his forehead.
“Okay, okay, okay!” Seàn cried, his hands up. “You’ve caught me, Mark. Okay?”
“Alright,” Mark said. “Now, let’s go sit down in the living room and try this again.”
Seàn hesitantly began walking. Mark behind him with the gun the whole way.
They sat down and Mark kept the gun in his hand.
“Well, Seàn?” he said. “Do you have something to tell me?”
“Fine! Yes! I’m a fucking werewolf. Did you have to make me say it??? Seàn broke down into tears.
Mark put the gun down on the coffee table between them. “Yes, I did have to make you say it.” he said.
“Wh-what?” Seàn sniffed.
“That’s the best way to tell if someone has good intentions or not.” Mark said.
“Wh-what do you mean? Aren’t you going to shoot me?” Seàn hiccoughed, looking at the gun on the coffee table.
“No, Seàn, I’m not going to shoot you. You’re not a bad guy and you don’t deserve to be shot.”
“But… but I’m not a good guy… I almost killed someone last night!”
“Seàn. You don’t enjoy being a werewolf, do you?” Mark said.
Seàn shook his head, shaking and sobbing.
“You’ve never hurt anyone on purpose have you?”
“No! No, I would never!”
“Exactly. You’re not a bad guy, I honestly don’t think you could be a bad guy if you wanted to. When you admitted to being a werewolf, you weren’t defensive, you weren’t even the least bit confident in it. You were sorrowful, and that tells me a lot about who you are as a person and as a werewolf.”
“R-really?” Seàn asked, his voice shaky and cracking.
Mark got up and went into the kitchen to brew some tea. He walked back into the living room with a steaming cup for the Irishman. He put it down in front of him and then reached under the coffee table to grab a small device that was releasing heavy doses of air-freshener into the air.
“Won’t be needing this anymore.” He said, turning it off and throwing it into the trash.
“You… you put that there on purpose?”
“Yeah, it was so you wouldn’t smell me when you came downstairs.”
“Huh… smart.” Seàn said.
“Now, drink the tea, it’ll help you calm down.” Mark said.
Seàn nodded and took the warm cup into his hands. Mark waited until Seàn finished. When he took the last sip it was a quarter to ten.
“Okay,” Mark began. “I’m no werewolf aficionado, but isn’t it… about that time?”
Seàn looked at his watch. “FUCK!” he shouted. “SHIT, I GOTTA GO!”
“Seàn! Calm down! I have a room in the basement designed just for this sort of thing! You can spend the night in there!”
“Really?” Seàn asked.
“Yes, really!”
“Oh… thank you…” Seàn said, calming down.
“No problemo.” Mark replied before getting up and leading Seàn down into the basement.
Seàn doubted Mark for a second when he saw the padded cell, but he pushed it to the back of his mind and decided to trust Mark. Besides, even if Mark did kill him, what did it matter? He would finally be put out of his misery.
“Don’t worry about making too much noise or breaking anything, it’s soundproof and practically indestructible.”
“Oh, okay… Thanks” Seàn said, entering the clean, white room.
“Alrighty, good night.” Mark said.
Seàn chuckled. “Good night.”
Good night? I haven’t had a ‘good night’ since I first turned. But he left that comment alone in his mind.
Mark closed the door and there was a loud ‘clunk’ sound as the heavy lock was put in place. He went upstairs and to his office where he logged on to his computer to watch Seàn through a security camera. He’d never actually seen a werewolf transformation before and his curiosity got the better of him.
He watched as Seàn sat down in the middle of the floor.
“Here we go again…” the Irishman muttered. There was a short silence before Seàn started taking deep breaths. His breaths became faster and shakier, and Mark suddenly found himself feeling nervous when he saw the terrified expression on his friend’s face. Was it really that bad if it happened every night?
Then suddenly, Seàn’s entire body tensed up and he flinched as a wave of pain hit him. It knocked him onto his side and Mark watched, horrified as the rest of the transformation took place. Seàn’s body began rearranging itself as he shrieked in pain. He screamed so loud that Mark could hear it through the walls.
After about 10 minutes or a lifetime, there was nothing but a panting mass of a beast lying in the middle of the floor. Five times larger than Mark or bigger, he couldn’t really tell. All he knew was that it… or rather, Seàn, was huge. He watched as Seàn shakily pulled himself up onto his feet, only to vomit blood everywhere, and not just a little bit.
After the whole ordeal Seàn simply began pacing around the room, occasionally whimpering, and Mark fell asleep in his desk chair.

How To Remove Old Window Tint From House & Building Windows
Window tint serves various purposes and looks great on building windows as well. When old or overly scratched, however, it may stress the eye and no longer serve its purpose.
As such, home and building owners should learn how to remove old window tint using effective methods.
Commercial building owners use tints for their structure’s windows for various reasons. They offer a degree of privacy, protection from UV rays, and also add to their aesthetic value.
Over time, the elements of wear and tear take a toll on window tint, and it, therefore, loses its value. At this point, it has to be removed and replaced. Its lifespan, therefore, depends on its quality, weather elements, and the quality of the installation.
Reasons for Tint Removal
Apart from getting scratched and looking old, there are other reasons that may need the removal of window tint. Here are some of them:
Bubbling
Besides looking horrible, bubbling film cannot be fixed. While most people try fixing this by peeling the tint at the point of bubbling, they may end up dealing with a bigger mess of removing tint glue and tint portions.
Bubbling is often caused by failing adhesive, which actually makes it easier to remove with little hassle.
Discoloration
Regardless of the color of your window tint, it eventually turns a purplish shade, and it may be a good idea to replace it.
At this point, the tint loses its ability to block UV rays, and this issue may, therefore, be more than aesthetic. Discoloration comes about due to the breakdown of dyes and is irreparable.
Aesthetics
Whenever tint gets old, it tends to lose color, and removing it may be the only option. There may be need to change the look of building windows, and this therefore involves removing the tint when it’s still in pristine condition.
This might be messy as the adhesive could still be strong, and this could require tricks on tint removal.
Effective methods of tint removal help building owners to cut down on the tint removal cost. All they need is a can-do-attitude, some free time, and the required tools for the job.
Luckily, the tools needed for DIY tint removal can be found in their toolbox or garage, and getting the job done will probably take a single afternoon.
Most of the methods of window tint removal involve scraping or using heating devices. Let’s look at some of these effective methods of removing old window tint:
Tumblr media
Method 1: Hair Dryer
Hair dryers are effective at removing old window tint from house windows, especially in chilly seasons. The heat produced makes it easy to peel off the tint.
Finding the right temperature to work with is essential, as too much heat will end up and breaking large windows and creating a mess that would be hard to clean.
Here are the materials you would need for this method:
Adhesive remover
Steel wool pads
Razor blades
Cotton cloth/rag
Paper towels
Window cleaner
Procedure
Step 1: Use the hair dryer to heat the outer side of the window, maintaining a distance of 4-6 inches from the glass. Using the dryer from the inside may cause the tint to merge with the window.
Step 2: When the window gets warm, start peeling off the tint from the edge of the window (preferably the corner). Alternating between heating and peeling ensures that the adhesive doesn’t settle back, and this guarantees an easy time when removing the tint.
Step 3: Use the razor to peel off any small pieces of tint left on the glass. Using the dryer on these patches helps remove them easily.
Step 4: Apply the adhesive remover and let it sit on the glass for up to 10 minutes before cleaning up.
Step 5: Use the razor and steel wool to scrape off the adhesive until the window is clean. Repeat this step in the case of stubborn adhesive.
Step 6: Finish the cleaning process by rubbing the window cleaner and wiping any residue using the paper towel to leave the glass sparkling.
Method 2: Steamer Removal
For building owners who may not know how to remove mirror film, this method may be a good starting point. By steaming the window for a few minutes, the adhesive melts, and the tint peels off easily.
Steamers distribute heat more efficiently and therefore eliminate the risk of burning the tint.
Here’s what you need for this method:
Steamer
Adhesive remover
Cotton cloth
Water
Procedure
Step 1: Fill up the steamer with water and give it time to warm up until it steams.
Step 2: Heat the window, preferably from the corner area, by holding the steam attachment close to the window. Keep heating until the tint is loose enough to be removed with a fingernail.
Step 3: Carefully peel the tint off the window, making sure that the tinting film doesn’t leave any tint patches.
Step 4: Using an adhesive cleaner and paper towel, clean the window to remove any residue.
Method 3: Solar Peel (Using Ammonia)
This chemical method of removing old tint comes in handy during the warm seasons. It leaves the window sparkling clean, and you probably won’t need a window tint removal spray to clean the windows.
Taking the necessary precautions like wearing a mask is essential to avoid inhaling the toxic fumes produced by the ammonia solution.
The materials you will need for this method include:
Black trash bags
Soapy water
Spray bottle
Razor knife
Fine steel wool
Paper towels
Cotton cloth
Procedure
Step 1: Prepare a soapy mixture using warm water and put it in a spray bottle. Cut large pieces of the black trash bags for covering both sides of the building window.
Step 2: Spray the soapy mixture to the outside of the window and cover it with a piece of the black plastic bags.
Step 3: Once the plastic bag is in place, spray the ammonia solution on the inside of the window in generous amounts. Ensure there’s sufficient ventilation to avoid the effects of ammonia fumes. Keep any furniture and fittings in the building well covered, perhaps using cotton clothes, to prevent damage. Then, cover the inside of the window using another piece of the black plastic bag.
Step 4: Allow the setup to sit in the sun for an hour or so. The black plastic bag pieces trap the heat and loosen the adhesive that holds the window tint film. Afterward, remove the plastic pieces.
Step 5: Using the razor knife, pry up the corner of the tint and carefully peel it off.
Step 6: Clean any adhesive on the window using fine steel wool and ammonia or any other window tint remover and wipe the residue using paper towels.
Method 4: Soap and Scrape
This method doesn’t require much finesse and is therefore effective in removing patches of window tint. However, it is time-consuming and may be strenuous, especially for those who don’t know how to remove window tint glue.
Some of the materials you will need for this method include:
Soapy water
Spray bottle
Paper towels
Razor blade/knife
Glass cleaner
Procedure
Step 1: Cut the corner of the window film using the razor blade to create a tab to help peel off the tint film.
Step 2: Grasp the tab and carefully peel off the tint from the window. In case there are small portions of the tint film left, repeat the peeling process until most of the tint comes off.
Step 3: Using the spray bottle, spray soapy water on the window to help remove the adhesive left behind.
Step 4: Use the razor blade to scrape off the adhesive and ensure the window doesn’t dry up by spraying more soapy water on the working area.
Step 5: Use the glass cleaner and paper towels to clean the window once you’re done scraping the adhesive.
Method 5: Soap and Newspaper
Individuals who may be wondering how to remove old window tint from their premises and buildings may as well try this method. It is similar to the soap and scrape method and requires little skill.
To remove tint using this method, you will need the following materials:
Bucket
Warm soapy water
Paper towels
Razor blade/knife
Newspapers
Sponge
Glass cleaner
Procedure
Step 1: Put soapy water in a bucket and apply lots of it on the window, then cover it with the newspaper. Allow this setup to sit for an hour, which will result in the soaking and drying of the newspaper. Add more soapy water whenever the paper dries up.
Step 2: Use the razor blade to peel off the newspaper and the layer of tint beneath in long strips.
Step 3: The remaining layer of the tint is removed by rubbing it off using the razor blade and should come off easily. For stubborn tint film, repeating this process may yield better results.
Conclusion
Removing window tint may prove to be a daunting task for many building owners. As such, most of them opt for hiring the services of professional tint removers. For those who fancy trying such tasks by themselves, using a hairdryer, ammonia, steamer, and soapy water helps remove window tint easily and efficiently.
