Made a video that talks about all the lore and world building for the games I am working on. I am gonna work hard to release a solid one this Halloween.
I tried to make a game for the 7Day rougelike, but I made it from an sdl starter project. it reignited my desire to do game dev, despite not being finished. The repo is in the game page.
Finally, this is the image from the video:

Playing with some style concepts in preparation for 7DRL tomorrow! The idea here being that you're an antivirus tasked with cleaning out the computer.
I know feature creep will get the best of me if I try to come up with some really cool new mechanic so this'll be a pretty standard roguelike in terms of gameplay I think :P still excited though!

7DRL 2023
It’s upon us once again. I originally didn’t have a huge inspiration, but here we go yet again.
During the past year I’ve made little experiments with Elder Circle codebase and created a 3d renderer for it. The basic idea is to take the existing tileset and slap it onto procedurally generated simple shapes like boxes, planes and billboards. I use Three.js library for the WebGL rendering, an old familiar I used already back in 2014 7DRL challenge for Golem Quest.
I first developed it with first-person view and while it’s interesting and another type of game might be lurking in there, I don’t think the basic roguelike gameplay works super well in that perspective. Recently I got an idea to try an “isometric” camera which allows me have the gameplay work similarly (e.g. click to move), while still allowing me to play with the 3d gimmick.
Tumblr media
So yesterday I started working on a new 7drl, where the idea is that you are a space pirate and you execute heists on different space ships. On top of the 3d renderer (which was partially done before the challenge, but has needed a lot of changes already), I’ve started gathering art for a more sci-fi themed tileset, and blocked out a very basic draft level generator of two spaceships meeting in space for our pirate to board the other through a short spacewalk.
I have also implemented basic ranged combat (which will probably be the major gameplay feature for this year). I already had ranged combat in 2015′s Beware the Space Bears (that used probably the first incarnation of this “engine”), but it was stripped from the code for 2016, and is/will now be a complete rewrite as well as hopefully less awkward UX-wise.
It’s super tempting to play with all the graphical gimmicks a 3d renderer allows, but now that I have the basics working, I hope to first reach some form of gameplay completeness (no great ambitions here really), and then just leisurely tweak visuals the rest of the time. Fingers crossed.

"Stygian Abyss": Version 1.41 Released
Slashing Dragon has updated his roguelike take on "Ultima Underworld" with an automap feature.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted news about Stygian Abyss, Slashing Dragon’s roguelike take on Ultima Underworld. In case you’ve forgotten, Stygian Abyss began as Slash’s submission to 7DRL back in 2015. A first-person, action-driven dungeon crawler that plays not unlike Ultima Underworld, it presents players with a challenge that should be familiar to all Ultima fans: brave the depths and…

Knowing your stances on roguelites and roguelikes i have to ask when the last time you actually enjoyed a good rogue*like* was? Like what was the most recent roguelike that came out that you actually enjoyed?
I recently enjoyed Soulash! also I was interested by what I saw of Soulash 2 while I was playing the demo, but that's got a different vibe
Soulash is about being a dark god who already lost, reincarnating into a grunt monster and striving to turn over the heavens again. the entire world senses your lingering evil and is hostile to you, so even towns with full social structures are effectively dungeons, and every now and again, one of the gods will find you and come to try and stop you (killing them literally removes a natural concept from the world)
Soulash 2 is much more like Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode that's built backwards, where the adventure is the primary focus and you might never touch the settlement building aspects. too early to make calls on how it's going to shape up, but it could be really neat. you can kind of tell that one of the focuses is on the player being able to replicate the first game on their own free will, killing everything alive if they want to
I also tend to poke at 7DRL projects, but it's rare many stick with me outside of that context. Seven Samurai RL probably remains the one most stuck in my head, just because it's so simple while also being so conceptually unique
as far as recent 7DRLs go, I've been meaning to check out Errant Mech and Arcanist's Heritage

7DRL
This weekend I will begin my first ever game jam, the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge.
I just spent a couple hours putting together a project starter that is set up with webpack, typescript, prettier, and itch.io publish scripts. I plan to use rot.js, ape-ecs, and probably PixiJS.
The motivation behind this began when I saw this tweet from a developer I follow. Even though that starter template won't end up being made in time for the jam, it was enough to make me realize a game jam is exactly what I need.
I've never really finished a game before. Most of what I've made can barely be called games. Now I have motivation and a timeframe to put out a game, however simple (or even bad) it may be.
I haven't decided on an idea yet but I still have time; I am allowed to start as late as Sunday night. The starting time I pick must also be the ending time in the following weekend.
I know that I want to keep my idea as simple as possible and prioritize making it playable before anything else. That's the advice given here and elsewhere, and I will try my best to follow it.
My vague plan is to start with the basic Rogue format and add a twist to it. I found the replies in this thread to be intruiging. But even those ideas may be too ambitious to design and develop for my first roguelike and first jam.
I don't plan on blogging my progress during the week since I want to minimize distractions as much as possible. Maybe I'll just post small notes. I enjoy recapping all the things I've done in a day but I should try to avoid spending that much time during the jam and save it for the end. Even writing this post feels like too much time spent when I should be planning. See you soon!
