ok this one's a bit niche, it's the original concept for what eventually became d'celui que son coeur aime, but was completely different at first before i decided i wanted it to be more fucked up than i reasonably could make it with cale there. so here's some sam girard/cale makar!

It goes on like that, Guylaine asking questions and Cale answering them gamely. Sam cuts in when he gets the chance, but the two of them seem content to go back and forth for a while.

As the scattered towns melt more thoroughly into clustered trees, they settle into a comfortable silence. Cale starts scrolling through his phone in the backseat, and Sam zones out on the endless stretch of gray pavement. Guylaine hums along to eighties Quebecois folk music under her breath.

Cale’s eyes flicker up as they roll to a stop in a town that’s ninety percent intersection. There’s a gas station on one corner and a bar on the other, and trees in either direction. Sam catches his gaze and smiles.

“Little longer, still. I’m taking you somewhere with at least two stop signs, promise.”

Cale grins. “Sweet talk me, city boy.”

Sam winks. Guylaine coughs, but when Sam looks at her, she’s doing a poor job of hiding her smile.

They pass by the population marker, the one that made Sam fake a gag the first time he saw it. When he thought about moving to a whole new country for the first time at fourteen, he’d always imagined something a little bigger than eight hundred people.

It’s just trees for a bit longer, and then they fall back and give way to the wide open sky, the ridge of a mountain rising up on one side. On the other side, they pass by Sam’s piano teacher’s house, and then the tiny, decrepit ice rink.

Guylaine leans back and tells Cale, “Sam was crazy for hockey when he was a kid. There weren’t any midget teams around here when we moved in, but he still spent all his free time at the rink.” She pauses. “Well, during the summer, he --” Sam can see where that’s going from a mile out, so he cuts in with, “Had work.” It’s vague, and it’s not even a lie. Cale doesn’t -- really need to know more about that.
