A Little Braver 41
Hello and good Friday. This is the first of the chapters with Rowan in Rifthold. Although they are separated we will see Rowan too. The GIF below is our Rowan excited about his classes. There is a bit of development on the drugs thefts and we find out who is behind them. We get some Elorcan and you will get to see Lorcan fuss and Aelin has her moment in the spotlight.
Enjoy!
Tumblr media
It had only been four days and Rowan was already exhausted. It was 9 am and he was in a classroom listening to introduction to flight test. The man in front him was a a captain who spoke to them as if they were still cadets at pilot academy. He had a condescending tone, not realising or just ignoring that all of them had hundreds of flying hours under their belts and combat experience. So when he started to explain the basics of weapons systems on military aircrafts he groaned internally.
He looked at his side and saw Mark about to fall asleep too. Sneakily he fished out his mobile from his pocket and placed it hidden beside the book. Luckily the guy in front of him was tall and covered any illicit activity.
He unlocked the phone and found a text from Aelin How are classes going?
The teacher doing introduction to flight test makes me want to cry.
I just got out of the shower. Want a naked pic of me?
Rowan groaned internally. Hell yes, he already missed her like crazy. But he was in class and such picture could be dangerous. Not now, I am in class and you are wonderfully distracting.
He looked up for a moment pretending to be paying attention, while he was waiting for her reply.
Fine. I will keep it for later.
I love you. He texted back and placed the mobile away and forced himself to go back to the lecture.
An hour later they were finally free and he and Mark walked to their next class “damn, that was boring as hell.”
Rowan chuckled as the man stretched his limbs “I want to do the cool stuff, like actual aircraft performance testing or systems testing, not this bullshit, I felt like I was back at pilot school.”
“I know. I almost fell asleep.” Confessed Rowan while they crossed the yard of the school. It was another nice sunny day and it was quite warm too. His jumpsuit was zipped down to his waist, leaving him in just a t-shirt. Aelin would love that view.
“I am actually dying to set my hands on a plane and do some actual flying.” Commented Mark.
“I want to fly a T-38. Those babies are amazing and I never had the chance to fly one.”
“What about the L-39 Albatross?”
“I flew one of those in my very early missions. The TAF had developed a single seater version used for combat.”
“You guys are posh.”
Rowan roared with laughter and the other man stared at him.
“Aelin’s second is ex army and call us in the airforce posh boys. It’s now a running joke.”
“Everyone is posh compared to the army.”
“That’s what I always say.” While they laughed and chatted they had finally reached the new classroom and Rowan hoped that it was going to be more exciting.

Aelin exited her office and went to the common room herding together her team “Good morning, my minions.”
“Oh captain, we feel so touched by your deep love.” Shouted Ress from his spot on the sofa.
“Ok guys, morning briefing. Listen up.” She moved to the centre of the room so that everyone could hear her “I want to start with our morning inspections. Nox, you take engine and truck and have a look that all is in order. Also, they both need a petrol top up so we will go for a ride and do that.” She went through her list in her notebook “Brullo, you are on tools duty today, Asterin, you and Ansel will be on gear check with Borte. Check that the SCBAs are all okay and oxygen topped up. Also, make sure that bunker gear is scrubbed as per the new regulations sent out by Dorian.” She flipped a page “the TFD has hardened some of the rules in order to protect our health. I hope we all are following these but I want all gear used yesterday to be washed. After that collapse we had a lot of rubbish on us. So make sure your spare bunker gear is good and wash the one from yesterday.” She turned her head “Manon, you will take the rest of the team and run drills and I might even join you today.”
“Yes, captain.”
“And finally,” he face lost her smile for an instant “Today is Aedion’s last day at east. As of next shift he will be taking over as captain at south station.” She moved to her cousin and hugged him “It pains me to lose you, but they are some lucky bastards to have you. And you deserve this.”
He pulled back from the embrace “Thanks. I will miss this house of madness, but I am finally looking forward to this.”
Everyone stood and they shared a big group hug with Aedion. She was going to miss him like crazy.
Aelin cleared her throat and the group broke up and she took the stage once more “I received an update from PD about the drugs thefts.” She looked at the paramedics in particular “PD has a lead on a guy called Erawan, apparently he is the new drug lord in town after Hamel’s demise. But he is much worse. His minions steal the drug supplies and he sells them to the highest bidder. The attacks on ambulances have increased since criminal who can’t from Erawan are now helping themselves with ambulances. PD is stretched thin and can’t follow every single vehicle.” She explained with terror in her heart. “One of the paramedics from the hospital’s own fleet is in the hospital after being stabbed. He is in the ICU and are hoping he will pull through.”
Aedion looked at her in terror.
“If it were for me, we would stop carrying controlled drugs altogether, but from a medical point of view I can see why that is not possible.” She looked again at Lys and Elide “If a call looks suspicious, you call PD backup before heading in. Do not put yourself in a dangerous situation. “
“What do Dorian and Chief Harker say about this?” Asked Ress.
“They are not happy. The idea of sending the paramedics out in possible dangerous situations is making them nervous. They are putting a lot of pressure on PD.”
“Cap, this is madness.” Shouted Ansel.
Aelin raised her hands “I agree. I am not happy and I told them over and over again.”
“We will be careful,” interjected Lysandra “We have the new emergency button and both Elide and I have been taking self defence classes. We will be okay.”
Aelin gave her a tight smile “You should be able to do your job safely, damnit.”
“I know, but that’s how it is. We will be fine.”
Aedion pulled an arm around his wife’s waist and Lys leaned into him.
In that instant dispatch alarm went off and it called for an ambulance. The whole team watched the two paramedics drive away with a sense of unease in them.
Aelin was on the apron doing drills with her team when Dorian’s car pulled up. She dropped her ladder and walked to him. A visit from the chief meant trouble most of times.
“Chief, good morning.”
Dorian flashed her a smile and with his head nodded to follow him back inside.
Once in her office he sat down and she sensed trouble.
“You don’t look happy.”
Dorian shook his head and passed the file he was holding, to her. She had a look and it was her report on a house fire they had attended two days before. It had been a horrible fire in a house. The father had used his body to protect the kids and they had found him too late. The visibility had been zero and she only spotted them after a second pass, just because she was paranoid. Aelin had stayed inside even after Dorian had ordered them to evacuate. The fire had been deep in the structure and it had become far too dangerous. In the end she had found the man. They had carried the kids outside straight away and only suffered some smoke inhalation. The father had suffered severe burns and died while en route. She had replayed every order and every movement in her head and ended up blaming herself for not spotting the man earlier.
“The wife is suing the TFD for negligence.” Dorian added and Aelin felt as if someone had stabbed her .
“Excuse me?”
“Aelin, I am on your side. The fire was deep in the structure. We found them only because you disobeyed me and stood behind.”
“Did you explained that to the commissioner?”
Dorian nodded “I told him that is was a bad situation.”
“So she is blaming us?”
“She just lost her husband.”
Aelin groaned. Yes, the woman was in pain, but blaming them for her loss was too much “what about blaming her fireplace? During overhaul we found out that’s where the fire originated. Probably not properly cleaned and without safeguards either.” She shouted back, angry. She had risked her life to take that man out. Nox and Manon had risked theirs to stay behind as well and grab the kids to safety. She was furious.
“Our lawyers are working on the case but you and the team will have to appear n front of her and her lawyers and testify.”
Aelin stood and ran a hand through her hair “When is it?”
“At the end of this shift.”
She went to the window and looked outside “fine.”
“Aelin, I have your back. I made the call to push back.”
“But we knew there were people inside. She told us.” She replied frustrated.
“Aelin, you barely missed the flashover. I could have lost the entire company.”
She nodded. The house had gone up in a blaze of glory as soon as they set their feet out on the threshold. Her arms still ached from the hit she took on the concrete.
“You should tell the guys. I want all of you to tell the facts. Just explained what happened. I will be there anyway.”
Dorian left and she joined her team again, all quite eager to hear about what had happened with the chief.
And she told them and they were not happy. Manon, who was usually very quiet burst out in rage “are they kidding us, cap? There was no visibility. It’s a miracle we are alive, and she blames us? For negligence?”
Aelin agreed with Manon but at the same time her fury had abated. The widow was grieving, in a matter of minutes she had lost a lot and of course she was not thinking rationally.
“I understand your frustration and believe me, I am just as furious.” She explained “but also consider that the woman lost her husband and almost lost her kids too, and her house is gone. She is grieving.”
They did not deserve the blame but Aelin put herself in the woman’s shoes. When she lost Sam she had lashed at his team. She had blamed them for not going with him. The pain had been too much to bear and was mad with grief. Being rational was the last thing she cared about.
“That does not allow her to blame us.” Added Asterin.
Aelin sighed “You guys remember me when I lost Sam. I started shouting at Thomas blaming him that as his lieutenant he didn’t do anything. I kept blaming him for a while, but then I spoke to him and he helped me understand what happened.” She added looking at them. They had all been there and saw her broken by grief “Let’s explain this woman what happened, let her know that we did all we could and let’s be understanding of her grief right now.”
“Yes captain.”
“Ok, let’s go back to our drills.”
**
Lysandra parked the ambulance in front of the address received by dispatch and she and Elide grabbed a jump bag each and were met by a screaming woman “please, come. Please help my friend.”
“What happened?”
“I live next door. I heard screaming, so I went out of the door and heard it was coming from my friend’s flat.” She explained while they climbed the stairs “she and her husband have been fighting a lot recently.”
The door of the flat was wide open and the two paramedics walked in carefully while the neighbour waited outside.
“Miss, are you okay? Paramedics here.” Lysandra took a step in the bedroom and saw a woman with a knife in her chest. Fuck. She opened her jump bag and grabbed the gauzes to try and stabilise the knife. It would have to be removed in a hospital. The woman cried and Lys tried to calm her. Then she turned to search for Elide and froze at the scene. The man, the husband probably, had Elide at knife point. From a quick assessment he was high. Which meant more danger. She had no idea how he could react.
“Let her die.” He shouted, clearly distressed “let the bitch die.”
Lysandra exchanged a look with Elide.
“Open your bag.” He said visibly shaking “open your damn bag and pull out the drugs or I kill your friend.” His knife dangerously close to Elide’s throat.
Lys was stuck. If she went to get the drugs the woman would die. But if she didn’t Elide would die.
Her partner nodded “let me take care of your wife, while my friend gets the drugs.”
“You make one move and you die.” Then he turned to Lys “Gimme the drugs.”
“We don’t keep them in the bags. I need to go back to the ambulance.”
“Leave… leave the radio here.”
Lysandra pulled off her radio and with her eyes apologised to Elide.
She ran downstairs and went to the ambulance and opened the driver’s seat and pulled the alarm and hoped that the police would be quick to react. Dispatch had their coordinates.
With shaky hands she grabbed a vial of ketamine and filled a syringe with it. Grabbed all the other vials and hoped it worked. The guy was so high that there was no chance he’d read the label.
She ran upstairs and found the man still with the knife at Elide’s throat.
The man spotted the syringe and quickly snatched from Lys’ hands and injected himself eagerly.
Lys smiled at Elide and a moment later the man collapsed on the ground.
“Ketamine?”
Lys nodded and ran to the woman on the bed. They tried hard to revive her but the bleeding had been too much.
A few minutes later they heard the police climbing the stairs.
Chaol and Nesryn joined the two paramedics “are you okay?”
Shock passed, Elide sat on the bed and cracked. Lys stood and kept looking at the dead woman.
“I had to choose.” She said quietly to Chaol “he had Elide at knife point. I had to find a way out to get help. I let her die.” Nesryn walked to her and held her “you did the right thing. You could have both died.”
Chaol in the meantime had cuffed the man “Nes is right. It was the right decision.”
Lys’ hands shook “I am a paramedic,” she sobbed “my job is to help people. I failed this woman.”
Elide turned her head, then stood and reached her partner and hugged the woman “this is not on you. The knife was probably in the heart considering how much she was bleeding. There was little we could have done.”
“Come on ladies, we will escort you back to the station.”
They had started to protest but Chaol did not listen and he and Nesryn followed the ambulance while it got back to base. The perp still fast asleep and cuffed in the back of the car.
Aelin’s team was just getting off truck and engine when they spotted the ambulance and a patrol car pull on the apron. She dropped the jacket and with Aedion she ran to the paramedics. Lys parked the ambulance and Aelin knew something had gone wrong. Both women looked in shock and the police escort was the other sign. She let Aedion and the team fuss over them while she walked to Chaol “what happened?”
“Bad call.” He explained “a guy high on something attacked his wife with a knife. He held Elide at knife point while Lys tried to save the woman. Then she did manage to get out with an excuse and alerted us. Luckily we were on patrol very nearby. By the time we got there the perp was neutralised, but the wife was dead. They are in shock. We escorted them back just in case.”
Aelin hugged the two police officers “Thank you both.”
“We didn’t do much. Lys beat us to it.” Explained Chaol.
“Look after them.” Added Nesryn.
“Now we got to go and take the perp back to the station.”
As soon as the police car left, Aelin ran to her friends and crushed them in a strong hug “you are safe. That’s all that matters.” She kissed both of her cheeks “I am going to call Dorian and put the ambulance out of service for today.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Yes, she will.” Added Aedion “you two are still in shock. For today the ambulance services can pick up the slack of an extra ambulance. You let us fuss.”
Aelin smiled “What he said,” she added, when Lys stared at her with begging eyes. She knew her friends were strong, but that experience must have shocked them and that could lead to them not being concentrated on the job. No, they would look after their paramedics.
Aelin disappeared and when she returned ten minutes later, the team was in the common room and Brullo was preparing tea for everyone.
“Dorian gives his blessing. He said that if you want you can go home or stay with us. He is calling dispatch to let them know and then alert chief Harker of what happened.”
Aelin had even texted Lorcan to tell him that Elide needed him. She hasn’t gone into the specifics but the man had replied with a I am on my way. She had a feeling Rowan had taught Lorcan how to fuss.
The man strode into the station twenty minutes later and he must have come straight from work because he was still in his uniform.
“Where is she?” His voice was frantic. Aelin explained that she went to get cleaned and changed. Lorcan ran for the lockers room and saw Elide in a towel, sitting on the bench. He ran to her and hugged her “You are safe.”
“Yes,” said Elide quietly and the man panicked.
“What happened?”
She told him and Lorcan froze. His hands cupped her face and she felt them trembling. Was Lorcan afraid? The cold man who barely showed emotions was actually worried. He then looked at her neck looking for any cuts, but there was nothing. The guy had never actually cut her, but she had felt the blade inch closer
“I am taking you home.”
Elide shook her head “I am fine.” But from her voice Lorcan knew she wasn’t.
“No, get changed and I will take you home. I will cook something nice and we just relax for the day.”
Elide found the strength to grin “Lorcan Salvaterre, are you fussing?”
The man stood and grabbed her regular clothes from her locker “come on, young lady.”
“Did you take fussing lessons from Rowan?” She joked and Lorcan kept ignoring her and Elide had more fun “you are so cute.” Elide kissed him softly on the cheek.
“You were in danger.” He said through gritted teeth “I worry, okay? When you go out in the ambulance I worry, especially now.”
Elide stared at his reaction. Lorcan was always unflappable but now she could see panic in his eyes. She caressed his face “you care.”
Lorcan rolled his eyes “I have shown that I more than care about you.”
Elide finished dressing up and took his hand “Can we order in tonight?”
“All you want.”
They exited the lockers room and joined the rest of the team in the common room. Lysandra was on the sofa and Aedion was at her side fussing as well and the rest of the team was keeping them company.
“Guys, Lor is taking me home.”
Aelin went to hug Elide “Relax, okay?” Then she turned to Lorcan “you look after her.”
Lorcan nodded and eventually they both left.
*
The next day once the shift was over the two teams were ready in their clean uniforms to drive to the their meeting. Aelin had spent the night going through the report to make sure she had all the details memorised. She had also phoned Rowan and told him all that had happened and the lawyer’s meeting they had. He had been scared for Lys and Elide and Aelin told him that Lorcan had finally learned to fuss.
He had told her about his classes and that things were finally getting interesting. Rowan had also become good friend with Mark and confessed that one of the first nights they had gone out with the other guys they had stuck together while the rest tried to get girls in a pub. She had laughed and told him to stick with the married guy.
Now she was in the car with some of the others and she was getting nervous. She Manon and Nox had gone through once more all the decisions and the steps they took on the day. They had done all they could. Now it was a matter to convince the woman.
Once they arrived at HQ where they were going to have the meeting, Dorian met them all and lead them in the room. The woman and her lawyer were already there.
Aelin went to greet her in behalf of the station “I apologise for our slight tardiness. We just got back from a call and we had to clean up before coming here.”
“That’s okay captain, the chief told us.” Said the woman’s lawyer.
They all sat down and Aelin was asked to recount the events.
“When we arrived on the scene the fire was already deep in the structure,” she started looking around the room at all the participants “Chief split us and ordered a quick primary search. We were told by Mrs Watt that the rest of her family was still in the house but she had no idea on which floor.” She turned to her team “Aedion, Ansel and Ress took the ground floor.” And pointed at the people “Manon, Nox and I went upstairs.” She stopped for a second, from now on she would have to be super precise “the fire was rolling and enveloped the entire floor and thick smoke made visibility very scarce.” She continued “I crouched and started to sweep the bedroom. I used my hand to reach under the bed and in other corners. I found no one” she stopped and looked at the widow “I heard Manon call that her room was clear and at the same time the chief order us to evacuate. I stood and took a step to the door when I felt something against my boot. I kneeled and felt a hand.” She kept telling and she could see the woman starting to tear up and it was breaking her heart too “I shouted at Manon and Nox for assistance, all three of us ignoring Dorian’s shouts to evacuate. I had felt something under the bigger hand. It was a smaller one.” The widow burst into tears “We moved your husband and found the two kids under him.”
“Nox and I grabbed the kids who we knew were still alive as they had been moving, and Aelin grabbed your husband.” Continued Manon “we had no idea of his condition until we were outside. Our priority was just to get out.”
Aelin nodded “Mrs Watt, people calls us heroes for what we do, but what your husband did, he was the true hero.” The woman nodded while sobbing loudly “We disobeyed orders to find them, and I am glad we did.” She paused “On behalf of all my team I want to pass our condolences.” She looked at the woman and barely kept a few tears from coming.
Once the lawyers were happy, the team was asked to wait outside while Dorian and the commissioner dealt with all the other aspects of the inquiry.
They all sat down.
“One heck of a finale for you captain,” joked Ress to Aedion.
Aedion sighed deeply “Hopefully the political bigwigs will fix it.”
Aelin sat in a corner silent, ignoring her team chatting away. For some reason she had connected with the woman. Her irrational reaction had brought her back memories and it hurt more than she thought possible. Deep down she realised that no matter how deeply she loved Rowan, a part of her still mourned Sam and the brutal way he was taken from her, especially after discovering the truth.
She was moping away when both Dorian and the commissioner appeared from the office and they all stood anxious to hear the verdict.
“Mrs Watt has accepted your testimony. After hearing your retelling of the facts she could see that you had done all you could and put your life in jeopardy. She is grateful for her sons’ life.”
Aelin and the team visibly relaxed.
“She decided to drop the lawsuit.”
They all relaxed at the news.
***
It was Friday morning and Rowan was already awake as usual. He donned his jumpsuit and silently sneaked out of his quarters without waking up Mark. The man had confessed that the only positive thing about being away was that he could catch up on the sleep that had become a luxury with kids.
Once outside he took the path towards the galley and went for breakfast. He grabbed his phone, which he had stashed in his pocket and had a look at Aelin’s texts. She was up already, ready to go on shift.
Had it been another Friday he’d be counting down to the hours until he could fly home. But it was their first week and they were not allowed to leave yet. He had known from the beginning and he had told her as well. He missed her. They had developed a routine and he would phone in the evening when he was free of classes. If she was on a call when he phoned, she would phone him back as soon as she returned to quarters.
Rowan went to the self service area and put some food on his tray for breakfast and sat down on a table and went back texting Aelin. He had been telling about pilot school life and she had texted back that she had learned to make scrambled eggs.
Rowan had been very proud.
Just try not to become too good a chef. You might get rid of me.
Whitethorn, scrambled eggs is all I am doing. Even bacon is far too much.
Rowan had laughed. He tried to imagine her in their kitchen with her fire blanket and the extinguisher.
A week, he had to resist for a week.
After that only 5 months and three weeks to go.
He sighed and returned to his food when someone took a seat at his side.
“Morning, Whitethorn.”
He was one of his class mates. One of the good ones that he and Mark had befriended quite easily. Another married man. The other guys had started calling the three of them the boring trio. Mostly because in the week so far the group had gone out a few times and the three of them had been the ones turning away all the women that had flocked to a group of airforce pilots. They had pestered him especially, telling him that he was not married and that if he kept his mouth shut he could have fun and keep his girlfriend. Rowan had been horrified by the idea.
“Mark still asleep?”
“He was when I left him.” Replied Rowan.
“I bet he is trying to get all the sleep he can now that he is away.”
Rowan chuckled “that’s what he told me.”
The other man nodded “I hate that we can’t go home this weekend. I honestly think this is going to be worst than deployment.”
“How so?” Rowan looked at the man opposite from him.
“Because while deployed you know you are stuck. You make peace with it and just go on with the day job.” He explained “Here, you know you can go home on a Friday and have to be back by Sunday night. You spend the week counting for those five days to pass. Then Friday arrives and goes and you are back here, waiting for another week to pass.”
Rowan could see the man’s point. In a sense it was far crueler. It was a constant desire for the week to go fast and the weekend to slow down.
Rowan ate his food in silence “The time would go faster if we were allowed to do the cool stuff. I am tired of books.”
The other man nodded vigorously “yes,” then he grabbed a bite of his breakfast “are you and Mark joining the group going out tonight?”
“If only they’d stop setting me up with women I am not interested in.”
The other man laughed “I think some of them cannot conceive the idea of monogamy.”
Rowan scoffed “it’s not rocket science.” He paused “I think I will be boring Rowan tonight. Aelin is on shift so I will give her a phone hoping that dispatch alarm will not interrupt us.”
“I just think is so cool that your other half is a firefighter. It sounds so badass.”
Rowan smiled openly “that she is.” And he told his classmates some of the stunts she pulled.
In that moment Mark joined them.
“Look who decided to join the realm of the living.” He gave them a tight smile and Rowan worried “Are you okay?”
“Yes, “ he sat down beside him placing his tray on the table “my wife called me because the kids wanted to talk to me and when I had to say goodbye they started crying. It was heartbreaking.” The man played absentmindedly with his fork “I honestly don’t know why I keep doing this. I should have taken the instructor job but no, here I am going off for six months.”
Rowan understood the pain. Six months was worth the separation if then it meant a post with no more deployment. But from his friend’s perspective must be hell to be away from the kids too.
“Hey, you and I can be boring together tonight.” Rowan joked.
Mark smiled “Oh yes, there is no way I am going out.”
“Traitors,” said the third man laughing and throwing a napkin at Rowan in revenge.
The trio chatted amicably and then once breakfast was over they walked to the first class of the day.
I know you are on shift tonight. Any chance we can have a nice evening chat?
For you, I’ll smash dispatch alarm.
Rowan laughed out loud Heading to class. Be safe.
I love you, buzzard.
*
East team was having lunch when dispatch alarm went off and the team groaned.
“Structure fire,” called Nox as he started driving the engine to its destination.
They arrived pretty quickly and saw a residential building enveloped in flames. They parked truck, engine and ambulance in front of it and saw a crowd of people, hopefully the residents all gathered outside. Aelin jumped off the engine and started moving toward the crowd “move back, move back at a safe distance.”
She turned and started assessing the fire. The flames had engulfed at least two floors.
“Manon, take truck team and lead a primary search on the first floor.” The woman nodded and took her team into the building “Engine, you are with me. Ress, man the aerial and take Nox and Asterin on the roof to vent it.” Then Aelin heard it. A scream. She looked up and spotted a person waving from the top of the building. She masked up “I am am going up.” Swiftly she climbed on the engine and ran up the aerial following Nox and Asterin. Dorian arrived in that instant and she heard him take over the incident.
The three arrived on the roof and as they moved a step the floor felt wrong. She stopped the others two “stay close to the edge. The fire has reached the roof.” The other two started very slowly their job while Aelin spotted the victim. It was a teenage boy. She looked around trying to come up with a way to reach him. Walking on the roof was a no go. Then she had an idea. Aelin grabbed some ropes and tied them tightly to the top of the aerial then harnessed herself to it.
“Cap?” Asked Nox worrying about what crazy stunt she was going to pull.
Aelin climbed on the parapet and went on all fours and started crawling along its length. Then she felt it. The roof gave up. Nox was safe but Asterin was dragged down with it. Aelin stopped and flattened on the ledge “Manon, Asterin just went down with the roof, she is probably on the third floor. Send someone to locate her.”
“We’ll get her, cap.”
Aelin continued her crawl toward the teenager. It wasn’t far now. The last metre felt like the longest.
She finally reached the boy “I got you.” Aelin tied a rope around his waist and attached him to her harness for extra safety “Nox, you gotta catch us.”
“You what?”
Aelin ignored him and turned to the boy “I will get you out of here but you need to hang on to me super tight. Do you trust me?”
Aelin stood on the parapet and grabbed the kid “now. Hold on as hard as you can and close your eyes.” Then she looked at Nox and nodded at the man and wound her arms around the boy. Then she jumped and the rope swung and once it reached the other side Nox grabbed it and pulled Aelin and the kid on the parapet and then safely back on the roof.
“You are crazy.”
“It worked, though.” Said Aelin and released the teenager from her grip. In that instant Wes climbed up the aerial and was ready to get the boy back to safety. Aelin removed her ropes “How’s Asterin? I was too busy to listen to radio chatter.”
“Manon got her. She is fine. Probably some bruises but she is helping truck with primary search.”
Aelin sighed.
“I vented the roof.”
“Good. Let’s get down and have my arse chewed by Dorian.”
The two slowly climbed down and saw the boy reunited with his family. She crossed stares with Dorian who shook his head with a smile on his face. Oh well, he didn’t seem too mad. Slowly the rest of truck started to file out with the victims and Aelin grabbed a water line with Borte, Kyllian and Nox and started killing the fire as soon as Manon came out calling an all clear.
While working on the water line Nox was telling the other guys the crazy stunt Aelin had just pulled.
“Damn woman, you really are reckless.”
Aelin just smiled smugly.
And while they put out the rest of the fire, Lysandra fussed over Asterin and Elide was busy checking a few more victims.
Once the fire was out the chief called for overhaul and eventually an hour later they were on the way back to the station.
“I wish I had filmed it.” Added Nox while driving. “It was so fucking awesome.”
Aelin chuckled “thanks buddy for grabbing us.”
Back at the station Aelin ordered everyone to get lunch and then to get the bunker gear scrubbed. She sighed. She wished she had Aedion at her side. So she just texted him about the crazy stunt. Aelin missed him. it had only been a few days but not having Aedion as her second was still hard. She loved Manon. The woman had potential and she was positive she’d make a wonderful second, but with Aedion she had developed a deep working bond.
Slowly she walked to the bathroom and cleared her face from sweat and smoke and then went back to the lunch they had to abandon. She was famished.
Once she got back to the common room Aelin found her team in front of the tv. All of them “what is going on? Why no one is eating?”
Ansel pointed to the tv and saw a video image of her rescue.
“It’s all over the news. Someone filmed it from the road and according to the news it’s all over social media. It’s spreading fast.”
“They call you flying firewoman.”
Aelin laughed “I am going to have lunch.” She dismissed them. She did not like the idea of her rescue to go viral. That would mean reporters popping at the station and she did not want to deal with that.
She pulled her phone out and found a text from Aedion You are one crazy woman.
*
Rowan was in the common room enjoying some down time when one of his classmates ran to him waving his phone “Whitethorn have you seen this?”
He looked up and at his phone “isn’t this your girlfriend?”
He grabbed the phone and rewatched the video. That was Aelin, and when she swung the rope his heart sank.
“Damn man, she is amazing.” His colleague was in a daze of admiration.
Rowan nodded and stood. He went to his quarters and sat on his bed, his hands shaking. He was proud of her… but that was a crazy move and while he saw her jump off the parapet he had been terrified.
He grabbed his phone and rang her. Aelin picked up in an instant and his heart raced “Hi.”
“Hi sexy.”
Rowan was silent for a moment “I saw your flying stunt. One of my classmates just showed it to me.”
He heard Aelin sigh deeply “Yeah, that has gone viral already. It was the only way to save that boy.”
“Aelin that was insane. You almost gave me a heart attack.” His voice had come out harsher than he expected.
“Sorry.” She apologised.
Silence hung between them “Ro, are you okay?”
“Yes, I guess I am just being a worrywart. I know it’s your job but I fear for you. Everyday.”
Aelin’s heart raced. He was away and couldn’t even read his expression and that made her nervous. She could not tell if he was mad at her or not.
“I hate being away. I spent the whole day thinking that it’s Friday and I should be with you and I am not. I am just asking myself why I am doing this. While I am putting you aside for six months for my career.”
Aelin felt tears sting her eyes. She knew Rowan still felt a bit of guilt for what had happened with Lyria. He probably thought about Helen’s words on a daily basis. Yes, having him away was hard on her as well and she hated it but she did not want to be the possessive girlfriend who prevented her man to follow a career he liked.
“Sometimes I wished you told me not to do it.” She heard him sigh deeply “I wish the marshal kicked me out completely.” He went silent for a moment “I can’t do this anymore.”
“Put the camera on.” She told him, activating her camera as well and when he appeared he looked sad and the view broke her heart “Listen to me, we can do this. I love you, Ro, I know it’s hard and I miss you too.” She told him staring at him in his green eyes “it’s the last sacrifice. In about six months you will be back to me and it will be easier.” He looked tired and she was now the one to fuss “have you been sleeping? You look exhausted.”
“Fitfully.”
She knew Rowan was still suffering from lingering ptsd from the last mission. Since the night at the station when had broken down in tears in her lap he had opened up a bit more to her and allowed her in. She had helped the same way he had been at her side after the airport fire and he had seemed to improve but was aware that he would wake up at night sometimes from nightmares.
“You probably miss the hot blonde at your side.”
He finally chuckled and she relaxed a bit “I will make sure I have a lot of sexy lingerie ready for you next weekend.”
“I will need a lot of cheering up.”
He heard dispatch alarm and knew their time was up “Ro, I am here. If you need me you call me.”
“I love you. And no more stunts.”
“I will try and behave.”
Aelin closed the conversation and ran to the engine and for a moment she hoped Rowan was fine.
Then she stashed away het feeling and was ready for the next call.

“My goodness, what happened to your wedding ring?”
seokjin x reader (or oc) genre: fluff word count: 2.2K
a/n: hi lovelies! This drabble gives a look at Jin and Poopsie’s friendship before they invited the romantic aspect into their relationship. It just kind of shows their dynamic and how that friendship is the base of their romantic relationship later on. These two are best friends first, lovers second tbh. Thanks to the lovely, Gisella (@gisan), for this IKEA idea, I loved writing this xo. As always, thanks for reading, and I hope you all enjoy! :))
p.s. I’ve never actually been in an IKEA, so if this fic doesn’t sound very IKEA-ish, that would be why lol.
Tumblr media
MOVING into a new apartment was more work than you were expecting, and the excitement of having a new space without roommates was already wearing off due to your never-ending list of to-dos. Your living room was still completely barren and in desperate need of furniture.
That’s how you found yourself in IKEA with your best friend, having snuck the furniture store adventure into your weekly grocery shopping outing.
“This store is massive,” Jin complained, dragging his feet childishly as you perused the countless displays.
“Oh shush, you’re having fun,” you tried to convince him, Jin shooting you a glare with pouted lips. “I mean, look at that,” you searched the living room display for something interesting, “lamp.” Jin stopped walking, you halting with him as you made eye contact with his stare, a glare off ensuing. It didn’t take long for your lips to curve into small smiles before you were both giggling.
“A lamp? Do you think I’m as boring as Min Yoongi? Getting excited about lamps?” He asked you, you snickering in response.
“I promise we won’t be much longer, I just need to look at some couches,” you assured him, grabbing his wrist and tugging him along the walkway as you continued to pass by the numerous coffee table displays.
“Is your living room the only thing that isn’t furnished now?” He asked, stepping along with you, getting over his whining for the moment.
“Yeah, I mean, I need a few items here and there but I owned most of what was in that apartment,” you told him. “The couch was mine too but I left it because well, let’s face it, it was ugly as fuck,” you noted, Jin’s squeaky laugh delightfully resonating in your ears. “No ugly furniture, I’m not spending over half my paycheck toward rent just to stare at an ugly couch every time I walk into my apartment.”
Jin chuckled, wrapping his arm around your shoulders. “It wasn’t even that ugly,” he pointed out, you turning your face toward him to give him a questioning look. “Ok, it wasn’t great, but,” he pointed to an especially hideous sofa in one of the displays, “it wasn’t that bad.”
You giggled, nodding. “No, not it wasn’t quite that bad,” you agreed.
“Oh, now this one,” he said enthusiastically, leaving your side to walk into one of the living room displays. He plopped down onto the couch, stretching his arms out as he threw his head back to rest against the back cushions. “Now this,” he continued. “This, could be the one.” The couch really was nothing special, just a beige four-seater. However, with Jin placed on the plush sofa, you could see the beauty in it.
You hummed in feigned thought. “I’m not sure it will look as good without you sitting on it,” you told him, a small smile gracing Jin’s face as his ears immediately started tinting pink.
“Maybe I should move in,” he joked, though your heart raced at the words. Why was your pulse quickening at the joking suggestion of your best friend moving in with you?
“Mmm,” you teased, Jin’s smile widening at your mock apprehension to the idea. “Wasn’t getting rid of roommates the whole point of me moving into a new apartment?”
“It could be fun,” he told you, patting the sofa cushion next to him, a silent invite for you to sit with him. “I’m not just any roommate.”
Sitting down next to him, you gave him a surprised expression. “No?” Shaking his head, he looked forward, inspecting the display room. “Would you do the dishes?”
“Every night,” he nodded. “But only if you dry them.” You scoffed playfully, Jin giving you a look of offense. “What you can’t help dry the dishes?”
“You’re asking for a lot,” you told him, Jin smiling as he sighed.
“What if I did the drying then and you washed the dishes?” He proposed, you giggling at the worsened offer.
“Wow, you’re good at negotiating,” you teased, Jin standing up as he walked across the fake room. You observed his broad back and excellent posture, appreciating how strong but graceful he looked.
“My love,” Jin called to you in a rather mature voice, his back still to you. When you didn’t answer right away, he smoothly looked over his shoulder at you, and it almost resembled a scene from a music video. Fuck, did he have to be so attractive?
“Yes, darling,” you played along, standing up from the couch.
“What time are our dinner guests arriving?” He asked, you easily following the storyline he was creating on the spot.
“Oh, you forgetful old man, I already told you this morning. They’ll arrive at 6:30 pm,” you told him in the best posh housewife voice you could muster.
“Ah, that’s right, he nodded, looking back to a gold clock that was sitting on a shelf, which you noticed the hands were stuck on 9:30. “We don’t have much time,” he added, you snorting at the comment, Jin’s own squeaking laughter sounding out as his body shook in amusement.
“9:30 already?” You gasped. “Why that’s,” you paused, counting on your fingers, making Jin chuckle, “only nine hours away.” You looked at him, Jin’s facial expression showing pretend worry. “I better start dinner,” you told him in a panic, and immediately took off running toward a kitchen display.
Jin watched you for a moment in surprise, embarrassed by your sprinting through the store, but he quickly got over it, chasing after you. He arrived at the kitchen display only a few moments later than you, shaking his head with a fond smile as you kneeled over, absolutely winded.
Looking around the kitchen, Jin noted that the oven time was set at 8:30 and he quickly slipped back into your guys’ act.
“Wow, my love, you sure do cook up a delicious meal,” he said, you looking at him in confusion for a moment.
“Oh,” you said in realization, “dinner is already over, wow, time flies,” you giggled, Jin shooting you a wide smile. “I guess we better start the dishes,” you told him, pointing to the kitchen sink.
“Remember,” he called out, you looking back at him. “You wash, I dry.” You scoffed, rolling your eyes.
As you pretended to wash a dish, he appeared at your side, watching you in amusement. It was always so easy between you and him. You both appreciated each other for that. And though you both had a feeling there was more attraction behind your friendship than either of you were willing to acknowledge quite yet, neither of you could resist thinking about what a romantic relationship would look like. Perhaps that’s why you both got way into your fake couple act in the middle of an IKEA.
You pretended to hand him the invisible dish, Jin taking it with a nod as he pretended to dry it with an invisible towel. However, just as you were about to drop the act, in the middle of a turn to exit the display, Jin gasped dramatically. Your eyes widened as you jumped a bit, startled by the sudden outburst.
“My goodness, what happened to your wedding ring?” He asked you, grabbing your hand to hold your ringless finger at eye level. It was almost too easy to play along, you quickly jumping back into character.
“Oh dear, it must have fallen off and slipped down the drain,” you said in feigned panic, grabbing the edge of the display sink, looking at the basin.
Jin started stuttering comically, you nearly breaking character as you held back a laugh. “Well, shit,” he finally stammered out in all his chaotic energy, sending you into cackles as he started laughing as well, though he put up a good fight trying to hold it in. He went through a series of composing himself, only for giggles to break through, multiple times in a row before shouting out, “I better tear these pipes out and find that damn ring.” A few shoppers stared at you both as they walked by as Jin added, “it cost me a fortune!”
You were both blushing, but you were far too amused to care about what a few strangers thought of you in that moment. “Oh, or we could call a plumber,” you suggested, grabbing Jin’s bicep to stop him from pretending to rip your fake kitchen sink to pieces.
“There’s no time,” he told you before kneeling down, your face strained as a massive smile threatened to break through. You watched as he opened the bottom cupboard, immediately looking up at you with blown out eyes as if he had made a shocking discovery. “Love, we have a bigger problem.”
“What?” You asked, your own fake concern taking over your features.
“We don’t have any pipes!” As soon as he yelled the comment, you were cratering in laughter, leaning forward to support yourself on Jin’s broad shoulders as he rested his forehead against your thigh, wheezing and squeaking as he lost his composure.
An actual real-life couple walked into the kitchen area, glancing at you with judgment as they tried to look at the cabinets. Flooded with embarrassment, you tapped on Jin’s shoulder, making him look up at you before looking over his shoulder to spot the couple.
“Fuck,” he whispered, grabbing your hips to pull himself up before reaching for your hand, pulling you with him as you both walked away from the kitchen area, trying to get away from the scene you both just made. Though, with both of you in fits of laughter, the number of eyes on you were only increasing as you made your way through the store.
“Jesus,” Jin breathed out, you giggling at his mortification. “Can we just buy your couch and get out of here?”
Calming yourself down, you nodded, squeezing his hand. “Yeah, I just want the one you pointed out,” you said. Jin looked at you in confusion, you letting out a small, “What?”
“You don’t even like that one,” he reminded you, you instantly shaking your head.
“No, I want that one,” you insisted. “It’ll make me think of this moment.” Jin flashed you a bashful smile as he looked down the aisle. “Plus, there’s enough room for Tae and Kookie to sit with us,” you giggled, Jin sighing at the comment.
“Stop inviting them over, they’re troublemakers,” he teased. “Do you need anything else?”
“No, I don’t think-” you cut yourself off with a gasp. “Speaking of those two troublemakers, I need new dishes,” you remembered, grinning as Jin looked at you with an incredulous look.
“What do you mean? We just washed them,” he told you, you falling against him in cackles, Jin wrapping an arm around you as he lightly laughed at himself. “Wait, but what do dishes have to do with Taehyungie and JK?”
“When they were helping me move in they dropped the box and broke almost all of them,” you said nonchalantly.
“Taehyung and Jungkook broke your dishes?” He asked in surprise.
“Yeah,” you let out a small breathy chuckle.
“They’re paying for your replacements,” he told you, dragging you away from the dining room stuff, refusing to let you look for new sets without his two youngest members.
“It was an accident,” you whined, Jin leading you through the walkway.
“Nope,” he said simply. “I’ll text them when we leave and let them know they have to take you shopping for dishes tomorrow.”
“You’re so mean,” you teased him, Jin stopping to look at you with a look of shock.
“Mean?”
“To them,” you added. “You’re a sweetie to me, of course.”
“That’s right,” he nodded. “Better appreciate me.” You grinned fondly at the man as he smiled, adjusting his hold on your hand so your fingers were intertwined. He was beyond soft for you, and you for him. And there was no one else you would completely humiliate yourself with in an IKEA.
“I’m not inviting you to live with me,” you started, Jin looking at you attentively. “But having you as a roommate wouldn’t be so bad.”
He smiled softly, nodding. “Well, I’m not accepting your non-invite to live with you,” he smiled, “but I agree.”
You both shared a meaningful look that spoke more depth than the words you both said. As his eyes traveled your features, and yours his, it felt as though you were both discovering feelings within you. And though you didn’t have the bravery to explore those new feelings just yet, they were hard to ignore.
No, you weren’t moving in together, but the small moment of admission felt different than a conversation between friends. The light humor that encased your IKEA adventure was shrouded in something much more serious, but perhaps just as light. What did that mean for your friendship? Well, only time would tell. But you could get used to the way he was looking at you in that moment, his eyes shining, full of appreciation and adoration for you, and only you.
“Wait, maybe you should move in,” you started, Jin looking at you with a questioning look as you wore a mischievous smirk. “It would help with the rent.”
Jin gasped in feigned offense, you giggling. “Such a punk.”

Tumblr media
This is third time in a row that you find yourself waiting in this office. The hideous view of the mahogany desk, the slanted photo frame by the door sill. When the secretary leaves her desk and gives you an annoyed look, you felt the need to rise from your chair and tell her exactly how you feel before she even gets near.
“Listen, with all due respect,” you began with a sigh, “This is a horrendous waiting spell, my husband and I—“
Namjoon just went out to get coffee for both of you and he came forward to a scene he wasn’t prepared for.
“How many more procedures do we need to go through, just!” your voice raises, “to get an elementary school scholarship? Other people have their jobs to get to, and honestly fuck you and your stupid protocols. Why do you even have an office when you’re out 24/7.”
Heels spun to see your husband’s caught in the headlights eye, holding up two coffee takeaways, probably stopped breathing 2 minutes ago. You grabbed your hand bag and the documents in the secretary’s hand, and told her with a menacing tone,
“If my baby boy doesn’t get the scholarship he very much deserved, that’s on you.”
You snatched the coffee from Namjoon’s hand and grumbled, “We’re leaving.”
Namjoon followed immediately after, too stunned to even say a word. The secretary, in her expensive Alexander McQueen, and Pandora bracelets stood there with her arms down. Namjoon bows numerous times, even as he exits the revolving door. His wife is fuming, he hasn’t had breakfast, or lunch, can this day get any worse?
Fuck that because his wife is marching towards the car and finds the parking ticket on the windshield. You crumple that up and throw it on the ground, fuming.
Namjoon zooms on in the balled-up parking ticket and picks it up from the tar road as you angrily climb into the car and shut the car door as hard as you can. Namjoon climbs in on the passenger seat, holding his breath.
By now, you’re leaning your forehead on the steering wheel, sniffling.
“Babe,” barely audible but full of soothing weight, his large hand covered your back, up and down, side to side. Then it crept up your shoulders,as he pinches them with just the right amount of pressure and presses his lips on them, whispering, “It’s going to be okay.”
You leaned back to your car seat, finally having calmed a little. Tears streaming down your cheek still. They just continuously roll. They just won’t stop.
“For all we care, Koya doesn’t even need the scholarship. We could totally afford the school,” he said with a little shrug and the clarity of a billionaire.
“Yeah but he deserves it, he worked hard for it...”
“But he doesn’t need it.”
Namjoon switches in his seat, “We’ve been battling this out for two weeks now, I think it’s time that we move on and pay him ourselves... it’s not like it was too much, you know damn well I could afford his fees without having to go through this trouble of asking signatures from people who are clearly shirking from their much needed duty.”
There’s truth in his words. But Hyun isn’t just enrolling into an elementary school. He was enrolling in an exclusive curriculum that was arranged for above average IQ. That, he got from his dad, you’re sure.
“The parking ticket,” you squeaked.
“I got it,” he shot.
After what seemed forever, the car finally moves. Koya is sent to an art class on weekends so when you fetch him, his clothes were stained with all kinds of color. Namjoon and you looked from the car window, with a fond smile plastered on both your faces.
“He couldn’t be more obvious ha,” you commented. And Namjoon just smiled wider.
“Go get your son,” you said through a big grin.
“I’mma go get my son,” Namjoon said, the seatbelt whirled, and the car door clicks open. You smiled at the view of his back as he jogs a little to cross the street to get to his son. He gestured for the little one to wait until he gets there. They’re like a big and small pair. Koya jumps into his father’s arm and you could tell that Namjoon was grateful for those hours at the gym. Koya is 30 kilograms at the age of 7 and chances are he is going to lose all that weight by 10. Then he is going to grow taller. He is already taller than most of his friends. And then you will have to deal with two towers at home.
After art classes, it is important for Koya to take a nap. Brains that rest well, work well. He doesn’t even have any do’s-and-don’ts, he eats literally anything, studies when he wants, watches TV. So, while all parents fret on what their kids eat, how many hours they watch TV, when they study, you never had to worry all of that. In your principles, kids should be kids and in a way that is acceptable by the society.
They shouldn’t be on the phone for hours. They should be doing things what 7-year olds should do. And you’re lucky that Namjoon, sometimes agrees with you. One of his arguments was that the phone was one of the greatest technologies ever made and now, you can observe the movement of the planet through an app.
In his words, “Isn’t that cool!” Blinding smile, twinkling eyes, all the fiasco.
Namjoon carries Koya in from the backseat, took off his shoes, socks, and lay him down on his space rocket bed. While you escaped to the showers, Namjoon shed his jacket and sat on the edge of his office desk, reviewing documents to be sent in order to self-sponsor his child. His silhouette forms, the orange sky behind him looking picturesque as he flips the pages slowly, taking to terms everything he needed to know.
You by now have reclined to the door sill on your sides with your arms crossed and a faint smile on your lips, boring into the view of him.
“Love,” you called.
Namjoon jerks his head up, hanging his jaw, mumbling, “...two hundred seventy-five thousand,” and registers that you have mentioned his pet name, “yes?”
“I was just thinking,” you thwarted further into his home office, to the two-seater sofa he has and sat, “Is this the right thing to do?” You looked up at him, briefly, not long enough for him to decipher your thoughts, “Sending our baby off to a system they say, made for children like him? Why do they make it sound like he’s different?”
“How do we know that we,” you paused and try to rephrase your sentence so it sounds right, but no matter how you switch the words, it sounds wrong, “You and I both know what it’s like to be in the system, the pressure, the title of a genius, the weight of the word. Koya’s just 7...”
Namjoon turns over his shoulder, sets the documents down on the desk, and rubbed the back of his neck, tutting his tongue.
“What if he ends up resenting us? The way we did with our parents, for sending us both to a special school and giving us depression before we even turned 12. All because we have the family’s name to live up to.”
Namjoon moves from the desk, to circle the mahogany coffee table, and to the seat next to you.
“You heard him yourself that he wants to go to this school, that he wanted this curriculum. You heard yourself that his teachers cannot,” he shut his eyes and re-phrased, “do not, have anymore materials to teach him because he was beyond that level of intelligence,” Namjoon covered your knees with his palm.
“I don’t want him to feel that his intelligence is the only thing that defines him.”
“That’s why we need to send him there, so they’ll teach him!” He rejoiced. But no matter what, you can’t deny the weariness in your heart. You were worried that a system different from others, will make him the odd one in the bunch. You for instance, cheated on your IQ test so that you scored lower than the initial ones because you heard your parents plan. Namjoon didn’t do his IQ test until he was in middle school and he narrowly escaped from attending a more specific curriculum for the gifted.
“Let’s give this a try, for the hell of it,” his voice softens.
“This is your son’s future,” you darted, poking his chest.
You stood up, abruptly. Namjoon pushes his tongue to cheek.
“I’m going to my parents, don’t wait up,” you shouted from the door. Namjoon hangs his head low.
“She was the one being all ‘my son needs to have this scholarship, fuck your protocols and shit’ and now, she’s not even sure,” Namjoon lifts his ass off the couch, mumbling to himself. But you change your mind like you change your clothes when it comes to what’s best for others. Because you know for a certain, while you put your earrings that evening, it’s your son who will have to deal with the aftermath. And any decisions made, in place of him, is your responsibility. And you know this, because Namjoon isn’t always going to be around for a discussion.
You will be left raising Koya alone most of the time.
Namjoon has to leave by midnight, and he’s unsure if you really need to be at your parents today. He didn’t think you should, but you sounded so certain that anything he says would be best thrown in the bin before it leaves his mouth.
He clears his throat, “Helsinki is tonight, just so you know— “
“—I know,” you put on your perfume, and rubbed your wrist together, looking at him through the mirror.
“I thought you might have forgotten— “
“—I won’t be out long, I just needed some clarity, some kind of foundation that I’m doing something right,” you explained, slipping your phone into your back pocket, brushed your shoulder against your husband as you walked out.
Tumblr media
Two weeks after that conversation, Hyun, which was Koya’s actual name, was colouring in his colouring book when he said, “Mom, do you know that goldfish has an attention span of only 9 seconds?”
“No, baby. I didn’t know that,” you lied, you knew.
Hyun continued to colour, moving his head to the other side, “I got that fact from you, actually,” he passed.
Maybe Namjoon was right. Maybe you were underestimating your kid by thinking you know best. Maybe you’re afraid of something that hasn’t happen yet. Either way, as you pan out to the view outside the Trimage Apartment, where the skies are a concoction of lilac and pink, you prayed someone else would take the wheel.
“How come you do not know when your own husband is coming back?” Your mother nags you, as you held the door open for her.
“Because he would tell me if I needed to know. Chances are, he doesn’t even know when he’ll be back, so why bother asking?” You plopped on the sofa next to her.
“It feels like you’re doing this all on your own, by the looks of it...” she passed, looking around your apartment, scanning for whatever is out of place.
“What drinks do you want, ma?” You asked, already off the couch and speeding towards the kitchen, “Tea? Juice?”
“Juice sounds great,” she passed, “I came to keep you company, because I heard from your dad that Namjoon wasn’t around...”
“Aww, is it really because of that or are you bored of seeing dad pick his nose,” you chuckled.
“I don’t need to answer that,” your mom grimaced.
Hours after she came, while Hyun is away for a camping trip, you sat down with her, watching Pretty Women. Her favourite movie.
“You know, when you were younger, you showed incredible talent in academics and memory. Your dad and I were panicking, because when the doctor say it was above average, the reading, checking 6 out of 6 types of intelligence, we literally don’t know what to do...”
You lay your head on her lap this time, curled in a ball and to the side. You hummed in reply.
“I know you cheated on your IQ test thinking I’ll send you off to a boarding school if you did well, and although I think you were capable of it, I wasn’t ready to let you go despite what your father said,” she continued in a soft gentle voice.
It was then she revealed that all she wanted was for you to study at your own pace, at your own capability, without her interfering—or telling you that you’re made for something much better, much more difficult than this. For awhile, she thought what she did was right. Honing your mind by suppressing them. But she sometimes wished that she had went the other way. That she should have seen you for what you are without you fearing anything, without you over-calculating.
“I for sure, don’t know how Namjoon was raised, but I think when it comes to this, his mother is a more eligible person to be asked,” she pats your head. And your eyes bore into the screen at the view of Julia Roberts dazzling smile, not sharing the joy she had.
But rather, the insecurity of it all.
Miles away, several countries apart was Namjoon sitting in his black Sedan, waiting for his driver to get him where he needs to be next. While he waits, he scrolls down the missed call list, his wife in a good 17 of it.
He knows Hyun is away for a stargazing camp. He knows that his wife is still unsure about the curriculum. And he knows that he is running out of comfort words to present to his worry-wart wife. Some things are best unplanned. And some things are best waited out. His logical mind versus your soft heart—a familiar battle.
The moment you picked his calls up, he said, “We’ve been through this many times. We have had conversations and we’re running in circles of whether or not our son is capable of what he is capable of. And I say yes, while you say no. Harbouring all sorts of feelings, by staying on your side and I’m staying on mine and I think it’s safe to say that we both are sick of it—and I...”
“You’re right,” that isn't the retaliation he expected? That rare sound of defeat. He was so stunned he couldn’t even process it all in a string of a second. His wife, hot-headed butch of a wife say that he was right? Is this real? Is this even the right number? Yes, it’s his wife. He checked to be sure. Twice.
“You’re right, I’m overthinking it. I’m making my past as my son’s future, implying my fears as his, and see myself in him when he is himself,” you sighed into the phone.
“And I think, we will take him out only if he says he wants out, which he isn’t,” you added, “It’s hard when he looks up at me because I see myself. I forgot that you see that too. I mean,” you chuckled short, “Who else knows how to raise a kid smarter than yourself?”
“Babe, I love you. I’m catching the first flight home, and this time, I’m coming home when I say I am.”
The plane’s wing slices through the night sky.
“And our family will be whole again.”
Tumblr media
Namjoon is poking toy swords into the air, next to you.
“Focus, Kim,” you scolded, “We came to find Koya’s birthday present, not yours.”
“I already got my birthday present,” he shot back, “I’m looking at her.” You turned to him to see a sleazy smile and a wink.
“If you do that again, I’m going to actually hurl something at your head,” you warned, “There’s something about you Virgos.”
“Well, like it or not, you’ve married a Virgo. The damage is done,” he then proceeds to make machine-gun sounds.
“What do you buy for a 7-year old genius?” You hummed.
“Whatever 7-year olds likes,” he wiggles his eyebrow and showed the very sword he was holding.
So that’s how you got three swords home. Not sure if this a blessing or a curse. But the smile on those two faces, what else can be better than this.
Fuck standard operating procedures. Fuck protocols.

Day 26: past
Ok, I have to admit that this is a very long blurt out, but I just want to see more actual conversations between these two!
Read it on AO3
It was one of those evenings, lazy, idle, early Spring, that brings scents of newborn flowers and sunlight. And especially there, in the middle of the forest, at the Warehouse.
The rising temperatures had finally dried up the accumulated mud after the heavy winter snow and crescent light gave infinite brushstrokes of a renovated green palette. The vast majority of sprouts had reawakened already, green stems poking out everywhere, and new buds awoke back to life on the trees. But the first flowers to grow were, like always, daffodils: they had already covered the field surrounding the Warehouse with a wild layer of fluorescent yellow.
But despite the obvious changes in temperature and climate, the weather had decided to give the last breath of its bad old habits, unleashing the most unwelcomed storm that weekend. Meaning that my plan to go to the shore with Verda and his family had been postponed, to my disappointment. But I completely understood that the lightning, thunder and the water pouring from the clouds was not the perfect frame to visit and play by the seaside with two little girls.
To top it, all my attempts of going back to my house had been frustrated by a bunch of concerned vampires that seemed to know beforehand how bad the storm would become before I was even able to hear the first raindrops falling. Now, the narrow road that led to the main one had turned into quicksands that impeded any vehicle to drive through.
And that is how I find myself stuck in the Warehouse for another weekend with Unit Bravo. Although, this time, there are no missions, no assignments, no meetings… Nothing to do at all.
Not that I’m complaining: it's always fun to be around Felix; Mason is… definitely caustic, although that doesn’t have to be something bad; I will be able to catch up on some research with Nate and, perhaps - and just if the stars aligned correctly - even train a little bit with Adam. Although, this time, I will try my best to not end our sparring with a heated hold against the floor, even if, since it happened, I haven’t been able to brush the whole scene from my mind at all.
For this Friday evening, I decided to build my fortress in the library, surrounded by my ‘pending list of readings to catch up with’, feet up on the sofa, joggers, tank top, and a comforting glass of red wine.
And it seems that ‘stubborn minds think alike’, as Adam enters the library with a book and his own glass in his hand. He sits on the opposite side of the 5 seater sofa - as far away as he can from me - without any words at all and opens the book in his lap.
I glance at him over the pages of the ‘Fae Compendium’ I’m reading just to admire his perfect posture: both feet flat on the floor, straight back and, just for once, relaxed shoulders. My gaze lingers distractedly over the outline of his discreet Roman nose and the squared profile of his jaw before sliding down towards the broadness of his shoulders and the defined muscles of his arm, stretching the sleeve of his before-usual grey t-shirt. Cargo trousers and more military attire have been recently removed from his wardrobe and replaced by smart clothes - shirts, chinos, shoes… - more according to his rank and the peculiarities of their work in Wayhaven. Although Mason was all scorn and smirks at Adam’s noticeable change of essential clothing, Felix dropped something about him trying to impress someone… And despite Adam’s emotional constipation, I became quite aware that someone was clearly me.
He confessed that ‘I was everything’ and we held hands at the Carnival. It doesn’t seem much at all, but there’s also this insane pulling between us every time we are together. I cannot put words on it. It feels… natural. Good and right. Even if he drives me insane with his sternness and his stubbornness… Although I have to admit that I’m also guilty of the latest, too.
But despite that magnetism or chemistry that pulls us inevitably, neither of us have made any approach effort since the Carnival. Adam… well, because he’s Adam. And me… because it feels somehow correct to wait for him to make the next move. At the end of the day, he’s the one who seems to be struggling to understand what is going on between us. My interest has been laid bare at his feet. Many times. But I’m still waiting for him to decide what he wants to do with it.
As if feeling my concealed and thoughtful stare, his icy green eyes met mine and my stomach flips at being caught. However, I lock my eyes boldly in his, even if I feel my cheeks reddening and the tips of my fingers and toes tingling with excitement.
“D’you know…? It’s usually polite to say hello when you get into a place and find someone else there,” I tease him with a matter-of-fact tone.
Adam’s lips curl up a little bit in return. “I apologize, Detective. You looked quite immersed in the reading. I didn’t want to bother you.”
I hum noncommittally as an answer and go back to my book. And, after feeling his gaze lingering for a little longer over me, Adam goes also back to his.
The silence feels comfortable and that is one of the things that shocks me the most about our relationship: even if the tension between us is a permanent tangible thing, I can perfectly sit with him for hours, just reading or filling out reports… when we are at ease with each other.
I shake my head, trying to stop thinking about him, and I go back to my book.
“Fae supernaturals healing abilities are definitely better than human beings. However, the recovery time differs depending on the species and the nature of the wound.
On the next chart, there are examples of the most common traumas in comparison with the species and the healing time for each of them…”
Shit… I like history, mythology, psychology… And can even do with some biology if necessary, but this is too much for a Friday evening.
Twenty minutes later, my boredom is starting to win the battle. Distractedly, I run a hand through my pixie haircut, brushing the close-crop part at the back of my head.
I have to admit that I love the raspy feeling of short hair on my fingers.
It makes a quiet brushing sound that seems to catch Adam’s attention. I can feel, more than see, how he glances at my subtle movement over his book.
And I meet his eyes, emerald green washing over me with intensity.
His gaze snaps away from mine nearly immediately and there’s a rushed rustling when he turns some pages, clearing his throat.
But I keep staring. And I’m bored. And sudden curiosity sparkles in my mind.
I knew it before, the fact that Adam is more than 900 years old, basically because he told me. But I never got to think of the implications that it meant and I’m heavily struck by it. Like if suddenly understanding that he has actually lived, walked over the Earth, for 900 years. More than 9 human lives!
And I’m utterly gobsmacked and even lightheaded just thinking of it.
In less than a blink, a ton of questions pile up in my mind and itch in my tongue - history, customs, anthropology, religion… - and I decide to finally dismiss the Fae, trying to decide if I should ask them or not. And I’m sure he notices my hesitant stare by the way he shifts his weight a bit. But what really took him off his reading was my fingers tapping insistently a regular and unnerving pattern over the hard book cover in my lap.
He turns his head at me, emerald green finally meeting sapphire blue. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” I lie.
He gives me a condescending gaze, arching a blonde brow, and the gesture is so incredulous and yet so encouraging that it makes me speak my mind. “I was just thinking of how old you actually are…”
His eyebrows furrow nearly immediately, drawing a deep set of creases between them. Perhaps my admiration has been misunderstood under the boldness of the statement.
“I mean that you have lived for many years and over so many historical periods that I just find it difficult to understand...”
“What is it difficult to understand?” His words are spare and his tone, stern, although there’s a hint of honest curiosity behind them, encouraging the conversation despite his frown.
Speaking to Adam is like feeding a stray cat: you never know exactly when you’re overstepping your proximity, although I’m fully aware that he enjoys some old good snarky comments and clever retorts sometimes… But they can also scare him away in the blink of an eye.
“How are you still sane, for instance?” I declare with a shrug, the Fae book resting in my lap, open awkwardly, forcing its spine.
It’s obvious that my question takes him completely off-guard. After some silent seconds, analyzing the teasing and the meaning of it, Adam chuckles quietly. “That’s a very good question, indeed… Sometimes I ask myself that same exact thing.”
It seems that I passed the test. For now.
“It’s just… I can’t wrap my mind around it. Nearly 1000 years are loads of years!”
“They are, trust me. I’m well aware of it.”
I can’t avoid the feeling that he’s mocking me now or being sincere. It is difficult to tell when his expression is so serious most of the time.  “How were things? When you were human, I mean…”
His expression suddenly changes: from a thin friendly grin to pursed lips. Adam examines me with a critical eye before speaking. “Are you going to turn this evening into a personal interrogation, Detective?” His words are laced with reluctancy but it doesn’t take me by surprise.
I asked something too personal. I stepped too far.
However, he hasn’t retrieved just yet the book that he had left closed over his thighs, which means he might be keen on carrying on talking.
I try to solve the situation, swiftly explaining my intentions, giving him an honest look back. “I’m not asking you about the specifics of your life, but about the world around you, if that makes sense?”
“And why would I do that?”
Curiosity underlays his words and I use it on my behalf. “Because you can ask me anything you want in return?”
He breathes in deeply, considering, still eyeing me carefully as if he was about to sign a contract with the devil himself.
I am nearly losing my hopes that he would offer himself for that little game when Adam nods, closing his book and putting it aside on the coffee table, retrieving his glass of wine. Then, he bends his leg and rests it on the sofa, shifting his whole body to face me.
He looks… relaxed. Younger with no traces of a frown or his usual stern expression. At ease as I’ve never seen him before. And devilishly handsome.
A rush of nervousness jolts in my body and I completely forget what I wanted to ask, realizing - despite all the odds - how deeply I’m falling for that man. The sudden desire of reaching out for him and tracing his perfectly chiselled jawline with my fingers overwhelms me for an instant.
But that would be too much. It would be stepping too far, again.
Whatever battle he is dealing with himself about us, Adam is the only one who can solve it, and I don’t mind waiting.
Although I don’t fully understand what is going on in his mind.
“If we are going to do this, you’ll have to be more specific, Detective: I cannot tell you everything about the Early Middle Ages…”
I don’t wait for him to finish the sentence, closing my book and putting it aside as well. “How was life? How were the living conditions?” I ask with eagerness.
He scoffs. “That’s far away from being more specific...” However, he quietens and thinks for some seconds. “Life was… tough. And brief, but intense. And dirty. Death was as ordinary as breathing. People died. Illness, famishing, wars… Many of us were lucky to survive our childhood. The culture was kept locked in the monasteries and life was impossible to conceive without religion. Nobility fought against each other for more land, vassals or resources… that was everyday life.”
I retrieve my glass of wine from the table, rolling the stem in my fingers distractedly. “You’re painting it very bad…”
“It was very bad. They are not called the Dark Ages in vain.”
“Did you only live in Normandy?”
“Mostly. Except when my family got involved in wars of vassalage agreements with the feudal lord or the king. But I would rather not talk about it.”
That is clearly my cue to drop the topic, but I am just curious about one last thing. “Ok, can you indulge me with this one? I guess that you belonged to some sort of nobility back then… Did you? Did you have a castle?”
The tips of his lips curve up on a soft grin. “Minor nobility. And yes, we did have a castle.”
“Well… that explains so many things… Like why you boss everyone around, for example.”
My comment makes him chuckle and I’m delighted to hear the sound, rich and warm. The fleeting view of dimples made me smile in return, trying to take in as much as I can of it.
But I’ve got many more questions to be answered. Honest historical curiosity. “Did the system work back then? Feudalism?”
“I suppose it depends on who you ask. It obviously worked for the feudal lord, but trust me that the vassals and the peasants had a very different opinion about it. The wealth and the land belonged to the lord, as books say. And they only responded to the king. Peasants had many taxes to pay. Most of them were paid in kind, as they didn’t have anything else to pay with. That led to hunger, and hunger led to war and death.”
“It is not an optimistic point of view at all…”
“It was what it was.”
“When did things start to change?”
“Believe it or not, when religion started to ease its grip over everything and education and science made their appearance. During the whole Middle Ages, the culture was based and contained in monasteries. Normal people didn’t have any sort of education and mostly everyone was illiterate, including some nobility, too…”
Curiosity strikes me and I can’t help but interrupt him. “Were you one of them?”
Adam gives me a chiding look. “No, I was not. My family took our education very seriously. But as I was saying, things began to change when knowledge started to be more accessible to everyone. It was still mostly reserved for wealthy statements of society and nobility, but it made a whole difference after some years.”
I nod my head, sipping from my wine and he mirrors my gesture. Questions blurt in my mind: now I know he had siblings for sure, so I file the information up in my brain for another occasion, perhaps.
“Is our current government system better?”
“Definitely, although many things can still be improved. Don’t you think so?”
“Yes, I mean… I think our system is quite unfair and wealth and power are still very badly distributed, but I haven’t known anything else. Obviously, you have a wider perspective of how things have changed or improved.”
His seriousness turns into a very thin smile, but there’s a mischievous tone underlying his question. “Are you agreeing with me for once?”
“Oy, I agree with you more than often,” I say, faking indignant, making him arch an incredulous brow.
“Anyway, there are still many places that have a close-to-feudal government system and I will give you that, even in ours, the power and wealth are not fairly distributed, yet. But I suppose it’s a matter of time. Probably a long time.”
I nod my head with the certainty that, unless anything changes, I won’t be alive to appreciate the expected changes. But a new line of questioning bursts in my mind. “Have you been to any of those countries?” I ask, suddenly curious about his own experiences over 900 years.
Adam shifts again on the sofa, leaning his side on the back of it, and his top stretches gracefully over his tightened biceps. “No, Not recently. Our last assignment took us to different areas of South America, where some countries still have a ‘curious’ political situation.”
“Wow… You must have travelled quite a lot in 900 years…” It was not a question but a statement.
“Yes, I have. What about you?”
His question takes me by surprise. At this point, my human life seems too boring and far too mundane to have any interest at all. My brain stammers in finding a proper answer to it. “I… I don’t know. Well, yes, of course, I know. Not as much as I would have liked to, I suppose.”
I am fully aware of the vagueness of my answer by the way he quirks his eyebrow at me, demanding more information.
“I wasn’t very specific, was I?” I ask, scrunching my nose. I don’t have to wait for his answer to carry on. “Ok, I went to uni, I got pissed when Rebecca pulled back my application for the FBI and I put everything on standby. I got a backpack and I set off to Europe. I was ‘on the run’ for two years, but that’s why I babble in so many languages. Do you speak any languages?”
Adam purses his lips and I see a flick of embarrassment on his features. “Latin, English and French… Only because I learnt them when I was a child,” he confesses.
“How so? I had very high language expectations for a person that has lived over 900 years…” I tease him.
I find it quite funny the way he tries to explain himself. “Well… French and English have changed considerably since Medieval times… French had been quite important for many centuries. Back in time, more than half of Europe spoke French. And then English grew up to be the trade language: there was no need to learn anything else at all...”
“Fair point, I suppose…” I have to admit. “Or perhaps you were just being a bit lazy…?”
His smile widens. “I suppose you can also put it that way… I’m not… gifted for languages,” Adam admits, to my surprise. But before I can tease him further, he puts me under the spotlight, once again. “Where did you live? When you travelled to Europe, I mean.”
His interest seems genuine and it encourages my explanations and makes me a bit nervous, indeed. “Florence and Rome in Italy, suburbs of Paris, Berlin, Barcelona and Santander in Spain, London, of course, Budapest for a little while, although the language was too much for me…”
There’s a shine of admiration in his emerald eyes. And curiosity. “That’s quite a long journey for just two years.”
“It was… I quite enjoyed it: meeting new people, getting to know every secret and hidden corner of the cities… I didn’t do bad: I usually shared accommodation and worked in many crappy places.” I smile melancholically at the memory. “Rebecca also financed part of the trip, trying to buy my forgiveness. I suppose she felt guilty for ruining my expectations within the FBI...”
Even if my tone is easy, there’s still a sharp bitterness lacing my words and Adam notices it. He knows how bad the relationship with Agent Greene is. And, unlike Nate and Felix, I do really appreciate the fact that he has never tried to fix it, probably understanding the harm done and the fact that it was not his business at all.
“You clearly liked that life, why to come back here?”
I sigh with deep resignation. “I wish I could have stayed travelling… One day she turned the tap off. I survived for some months, but my income was not good enough and, sadly, my studies were quite criminology/psychology orientated to begin a brand new career in a different country.”
“But why come back here, to Wayhaven? You could have gone anywhere else.”
I chuckle bitterly. “Come back here was the last thing on my list, trust me: it was not in my plans at all. But they offered me the job and the promotion right after on a silver platter. An easy and shooting career, I have to admit. Not many people get to be a detective in less than a year. Of course Rebecca had something to do with it, but who cared at that point.”
Adam hums quietly, meditative. “I have to admit that, after having worked with you for some time, you are fairly competent as a detective.”
Wow, is that a compliment? Coming from him? About my skills as a detective?
His face is totally serious and I’m secretly glad that we are past the stage when we headbutted each other every day about our leadership disagreements. “Thank you, I suppose. It means quite a lot, coming from you and I do really appreciate it. Anyway, it’s my turn again. What is your craziest story about travelling?” I enquiry, sipping some wine.
“Are we talking about missions with the Agency?”
“No, not really. Something curious, funny or unusual… I don’t know. Whatever!”
Adam thinks for a little while, emptying his glass in the process and I give him some time for it. Definitely, 900 years are many years to think about.
“I think it was travelling the Silk Road little after its popularity grew within the West of Europe… It had been quite popular for some centuries already in Byzantium, but I think I must have been one of the first travellers from the Northern regions… Probably the palest person no one had ever seen there, or that’s what I deduced by the way everyone treated me. Once we arrived in Asia… It was quite common that people stopped me to touch my hair or my face as if they couldn’t believe I was real… Obviously, my features were quite different from the people that lived there… Probably they hadn’t seen anyone so white before...”
I can’t help but snicker at his words, picturing the situation like something taken from a film. “Well, it is true that you’re really pale. Perhaps a sunbathe from time to time would help with that…” my brain supplies, all witty.
He gives me a chiding look, one eyebrow arched up. “I wish it was that easy but trust me, it doesn’t work that way at all, Eve...”
My name sounds warm and sweet like honey on his lips and a thrill of pleasure runs down my spine thinking of him calling my name in many very different contexts, probably with fewer clothes involved.
“That’s a shame… I’m sure it would be quite a sight,” I return, flirty and mischievous.
Damn it! Sometimes I can’t just help it… But, to my surprise, Adam meets my gaze with a rather playful smirk and seems about to retort something back to me.
But, suddenly, his expression turns grave and he quietens, whatever he was about to say dying in his lips.
Perhaps it’s better not to pursue that line of conversation anymore.
I hear some steps on the corridor, even and unhurried. They stop in front of the library door and I turn my gaze to it, expecting Nate’s tall figure to come inside. Out of the corner of my eye, I perceive how Adam stiffens, still looking at me, but I’m sure he’s listening carefully to whoever is in the corridor. After some seconds, the steps resume, getting further away from us and he seems to relax again.
I won’t be surprised if he decides we had enough conversation already but, to my amazement, he adjusts his position on the sofa and waits for me to carry on with my interrogation, an encouraging calm expression on his face.
And I have to admit that I blank for some seconds, not knowing what to ask to keep him talking on the most friendly and intimate moment we have shared since we met. “What’s the best part of these times? What do you like the most?”
“Do you mean from this age?”
I just nod my head, eager to know his answer.
“Many things, I suppose… Water supply, medical advances, hygiene, the Internet, phones, flushable private toilets, cars…”
“Toilets?” I am a bit puzzled before understanding that toilets were actually quite different not many years ago. “Oh… ah! Fair enough.”
Adam gazes at me and offers me an amused tiny smile but I’m already interested in something else he said before. “Was it difficult to learn driving?”
His chest lowers in a contained sarcastic scoff and he rolls his eyes. I love the gesture immediately. “An odyssey at first, but I grew to like it. Nate is the only one who is still working on it.”
“I know he’s not very keen on any sort of technology… Last time I texted him it took him 12 min to type a reply... He told me you like cars.”
“Not the actual cars, but I like restoring and repairing them.”
His statement leaves me open-mouthed, as in my narrowed mind it’s quite hard to believe than a 900 years old vampire could remotely be able to understand the mechanics of a car. “Hang on… Do you actually know how to repair a car?”
For a parted moment, Adam feels quite pleased with himself. “Is it that surprising? I had to invest properly the time I didn’t use for learning languages...”
I gaze at his face, confused. His expression is soft but serious, however, there’s again that hint of sarcasm in his beautiful green eyes. “You know what? It’s very difficult to know when you are joking when your expression is exactly the same one than when we are arguing, you know?” I tease him, faking indignant.
He chuckles again and I melt with the sound.
I don’t want this evening to end. This conversation to end. Us.
“Perhaps you can give me a hand with mine, then?” I ask, hopeful.
But Adam just shakes his head. “I fix cars, but I don’t do miracles, Eve. Your car... I think buying a new one would be advisable in your case”
I shoot him a glare at his snarky comment but I’m happy to see that he’s openly smiling at me.
“Do you have any hobbies? What do you do when you’re not at the police station or working with us?” he wants to know.
Another question enquiring about me. I empty my glass and put it on the side table, realizing how green and clear his eyes are and how at ease he seems to be right now. Probably the distance between us has something to do with it (we are still sitting on opposite sides of the sofa). “Not that I had much time lately, but working out, writing, playing the guitar… But I’m sure you know that last one already.”
He hums in acknowledgement but doesn’t seem content with just one question. His next one is actually quite deep. “Do you regret knowing about us? Not just the Unit. Knowing about supernaturals’ existence?”
I divert my gaze from his and lean back on the arm of the sofa, wiggling my toes extended in front of me. It still takes me a long deep breath in to put my thoughts together to reply to his question, knowing I’m stepping on thin ice. “I did at first.”
Adam lowers his gaze. A quick scene of one of our conversations right after I was informed about everything flashes in my mind. He called himself a monster and I didn’t do anything to contradict the statement. I was not in the correct mindset, neither ready to see the truth. Embarrassment at my doing seeps through every pore of my skin. “But I don’t anymore. Learning the truth hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t change it at all. I’m quite glad to be part of it with you.”
His eyes dart to mine with a mixture of gratitude and alarm at my confession and I don’t really want to, but I explain myself further. “With all of you, Unit Bravo.”
But specifically you.
As he relaxes again, I decide to push my luck further. “Adam… I always wanted to ask you this but I will understand if you don’t want to answer. Did you keep in touch with your family after… You know… Becoming a vampire?”
Deep old sadness dampens his green eyes that flicker to the wall behind me and I’m nearly sure he won’t reply. He seems to be lost in memories for some seconds before meeting my gaze again.  “I did at first. I was not ready to assume what happened to me. I was in denial.”
“Was it not compatible? To be with your family, I mean...”
He smiles again but this time is quite different. Guilty and melancholic. “Not for a young vampire. Not at all. I had to leave...”
I regret bringing up the topic immediately because I don’t want to know about it. Not if it hurts him. Not if he is not ready.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you recall painful memories. I understand that if you love someone you are never ready to let go…”
“I tracked my descendants for some generations, but their lives were fleeting. Mortal lives still are sometimes. It became more and more difficult within the years. The loss…”
“So you just shut down…” I mutter, suddenly understanding.
Adam stares at me with glazed green eyes under blonde eyelashes, looking at me but without seeing me, lost in memories. And it all made sense now. All of him.
The only way he has been able to survive has been closing himself to any feeling. Switching off that part of his humanity that cared about anyone else. And that is why he’s so disturbed around me. Because I break his defences and remind him of everything he has lost.
The fact that he has feelings for me breaks the balance that his life has had for nearly a thousand years and he is completely lost on what to do about it.
About me. About us.
He just doesn’t want to lose me.
And there’s just one way he wouldn’t have to.
“Are you all right?” I ask, shyly and guilty.
“Yes. I am,” he states after a sharp inhale, retrieving his book from the table.
“I’m going to have dinner with Nate, would you like to join us?”
“No, thank you. I’ll carry on with my reading, Detective.”
Our conversation is clearly over and I smile sadly at the recovered title, my name forbidden on his lips once again.
“Thank you,” I say while standing up.
“What for?”
“For talking to me. For letting me know you.”
Adam doesn’t reply, but I swear I can see the quirk of a smile blooming on his lips when he looks at me.
When I walk past him, my hand lands on his broad shoulder and I feel him stiffen at the contact, all hard muscle and warmth under my touch. I give him a grateful squeeze.
My heart stutters and my breath hitches when his own hand covers mine, interlacing our fingers loosely for just some seconds.
“Thank you for understanding,” he hushed whispers before I resume my steps.
