So, let's talk about cheating. That is the fandom's hot topic right now, isn't it? I'm going to address this once and then never again, so if you're going rant, or send hate, or bitch to me about how much you hate this storyline, do it now, because this is the first and only time I will be opening this topic as a point of discourse rather than a narrative development in Buck's story.

To begin: I am not without sympathy for the people who have been cheated on or have witnessed the damaging effects of cheating and have clung to/projected on Buck over the years, only to have him cheat on Taylor. I mean that genuinely. Having to reconcile your love for this character with the feelings of hurt/betrayal you carry from someone else's actions is a very shitty thing and I'm sorry you are in this position.

Having said that, some of you guys are letting real life cloud your perception of this fictional storyline to a dangerous and/or disconcerting degree, and I just... do not understand that at all. Since the clip dropped yesterday, I have seen so many bizarre, nonfactual, and interesting takes about Buck cheating (some of them dropped directly into my inbox!) so I'm going to bullet point them and be done with it:

1) Buck cheating is bad writing: No, it is not! Just the opposite, actually. Buck cheating on Taylor with Lucy is objectively brilliant writing in several different ways:

a) Buck cheating ties in Buck's past character traits with his present. This is a good thing. Often as time goes on, writers develop their characters so much that looking at the character from pilot to end feels like viewing two completely different characters. Character development is good, and is something every writer should strive for, but not when it transforms the character unrecognizably. Buck reverting to old tactics and mindsets calls back to previous behavior and coping mechanisms and demonstrates the writers' continued grasp on and understanding of this character.

b) Buck cheating demonstrates the non-linear nature of healing. Oftentimes, TV shows view healing as a conclusion rather than a point in someone's journey. They will shape a big storyline around this character finally finding some peace of mind after episodes of struggle and top it off with a nice, pretty, emotional finale, but true healing is not like that. Some days you heal 10%. Some days you heal 100%. Some days you think you have healed 90% when you haven't healed at all. Some months you cruise at a steady 100% before you drop like a rock and hit 0%. And that's just the way life is. Healing is painful and messy. Sometimes you do it right, and sometimes you do it very, very wrong, but none of it is wasted and all of it aids your personal journey. 9-1-1 views healing as points in Buck's personal journey rather than a finale; right now, his healing is at a 0% but it will not stay there. Which is, frankly, more than can be said for a lot of people who land at 0% and decide not to get back up again.

2) Buck cheating is lazy writing: No, it is not! Actually, Hen's cheating storyline was comparatively far lazier because there was no reason for it except than to create some drama between the happy lesbians. Hen cheating served no real narrative or character purpose, and though the storyline has since been revisited in the years since 9-1-1 has found their rhythm and given some sort of character purpose, the initial storyline was weak and flat, the writers basically saying, "we don't know what else to do with you so uhh let's have Hen kiss her ex-girlfriend!" What we are seeing with Buck is not that.

Buck's spiral is the culmination of months of self-editing, repression, and constant retriggering. Buck has a history of self-harm and suicidal ideation, and is untethered and adrift without any of his anchors in place (anchors being, not just Eddie and Maddie personally, but the feeling of "normalcy" he has built around their (and Chimney's) presence). Guys. He witnessed the man he loves get shot right in front of him. He had that man's blood in his mouth, and then had to clean it off of him in a hospital bathroom, so he could immediately comfort his son and pretend everything is normal. Buck is still pretending. We are not just witnessing Season 1 Buck; in fact, I would argue that this is Buck pre-Season 1, actually. This is Buck at the height of his self-destruction; the same Buck who would speed down the street on a motorcycle, or throw himself in harm's way just to get his parents to look at him. This is a version of Buck we have seen glimpses of but have never really seen. There is nothing lazy about this writing.

3) Buck wouldn't cheat/Buck cheating is character assassination: Yes, he would, while he is in the midst of a severe mental health crisis and no, it is not. Do you guys even stop and think about why people cheat? I know it's easier to believe that cheaters are irredeemably bad and don't deserve any kind of redemption, or that all cheaters cheat because they're terrible and broken inside, but life is rarely that clean-cut. Sometimes cheaters cheat because there is a breakdown in the relationship, either sexually or emotionally. People who are happy in their relationships do not cheat because they are being emotionally and sexually fulfilled. People who are committed to their relationships do not cheat because they are emotionally and sexually invested in that partnership. It is absolutely true that cheating is never the other person's fault, but it is also true that the joint relationship is the problem when people who do not usually cheat commit acts of infidelity. Buck's feelings of unfulfillment are the root cause of his cheating on Taylor, and while he could have gone about the situation differently (coming clean, rather than panicking and asking her to move in with him (another trauma response, by the way), neither his feelings nor the way he went about fulfilling himself make him an inherently bad person.

4) Poor mental health isn't an "excuse" for cheating: Mmmm. Now, see, the problem with this one is that so many of you have gotten used to the idea of aesthetically pleasing mental illness. Even if you say you haven't, you have. Aesthetic mental health is smudgy eyeliner and drinking hard liquor straight from the bottle. It is messy rooms and spilled pillbottles with little white pills arranged artfully on a blank surface; it is ghosting your friends only to follow up with a cheeky little text months later and have everything go back to normal.

That is not mental illness. That is Euphoria.

Mental illness, especially when compounded with severe trauma (childhood or otherwise) is a transformation. You are not yourself when you are in a bad mental health space. And when you are in the throes of a severe downward spiral, sometimes you hurt people, physically and emotionally. Sometimes you even do it on purpose. Does that make it right? No! Should you still suffer the consequences for the things you do when you are not okay? Absolutely! But acknowledging that severe mental illness is a contributor to Buck's poor decision making is not making an "excuse" out of mental illness, holy fucking shit. It is recognizing the fact that mental illness transforms you into an alternate version of yourself that you would not be if you were mentally well.

Look. I get it, cheating is a sensitive topic and I've had my own experiences with it. But the moral high ground in this fandom that prevents people from recognizing anything other than "cheating = bad" is so disturbing and annoying. Truly, what does it say about the world when characters are more nuanced than the actual people who watch them on TV? I think it was @yramesoruniverse who said that 9-1-1 is an adult show that tells adult stories about growth, love, and healing, and that is exactly what we are witnessing here. Adulthood -- adult trauma, adult pain, adult growth -- is not clean-cut, feel good, or pretty. It just is, and you either persevere through the good and bad of it, or let it take you down.

And to be clear, since I think a lot of people could do with the reminder: this is all fictional. No matter how hard you project your pain, trauma, or consciousness onto a character, your projection does not suddenly make them real. Buck is not real. Lucy is not real. Taylor is not real, and no one is actually being hurt here. They are little stick figures that do a pre-orchestrated dance on our TV screens every week, and then go away once we turn the TV off. I know we all love, or are at least invested in this show, but if the line between fiction and reality is so distorted for you that you cannot see the reason behind the narrative choice, or are legitimately angry with a character, writer, or actor (especially to the point of effecting you mentally/emotionally), then perhaps some time away from the show would do you good.

I keep thinking about the scene in the bar when Bobby said that he worked in Minnesota and Lucy asked, “You worked there?”

I think that detail or maybe the fact that Lucy seemed so interested in that detail is supposed to be emphasized and I have 2 reasons why:

1) It could be for a future episode in this season or the next one, where they’d have to use the skills Bobby learned in Minnesota to complete the rescue, he was talking about some sort of clipper? They might not even be in LA for this rescue, it could be a crossover with LS.

2) Lucy seemed very interested in Bobby’s past. Maybe she finds out about it, promises to keep it a secret and then exposes it or tries to expose it for fame and the ratings. Lucy is not only supposed to be a Buck 1.0, she’s also supposed to be a Taylor 1.0 and we all know what Taylor tried to do when she first appeared on the show 👀👀👀

It could be something else entirely but I do feel like the way they emphasized that detail will be important for a future episode and it’s been driving me crazy for the past few days.

It’s the start of the of a new semester and Professor Griswold has a few tricks up his sleeve. His first idea was putting this particular group of eight students together to compete for a grand prize. Now, he plans to have some fun with it. Two sides will be established, the Prosecutor and the Defense. The winners get points towards the final competition.

𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐃 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐁𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐍 𝐎𝐍 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐀𝐘, 𝐅𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐀𝐑𝐘 𝟐𝟓 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐.

For our first event, we are about to put on the messiest mock trial. Professor Griswold is having The Love Club act out what a trial will look like, each student with a different role. We will be writing the characters portraying their roles in the trial, however there will be times they break out of the role as the drama ensues. They are able to ask questions to the professor, or critique their classmates performances at any time. This will be a fight both in their specific role and in their normal character.

𝐏𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔’𝐕𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐈𝐓.

In today’s lecture, Professor Griswold had passed out folders to each student and inside it contains a case summary, approved evidence that each side can use to show the judge, and a list of roles.

𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐘:  Oxford real estate developer Philip Fontaine was found dead in his home in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 11, 2021.

Fontaine's young wife, Ashley, found his body in a dried up, pool of blood on the kitchen floor around 1:00 a.m. Both Mrs. Fontaine and her stepson Grant reportedly arrived home minutes before the 911 call was made.

Now, in September 2022, the case is about to come to trial, and the defense claims to have evidence exonerating the accused and implicating another suspect.

The night of the murder, Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a man found dead on his kitchen floor. When sheriff's officers arrived at the location, they found a gruesome scene.

After examining the scene, Detective Armstrong talked to the victim's wife, Ashley Fontaine, who found the body and called 911.

Then the detective tried to get some sense out of the victim's son, Grant Fontaine, about what he'd been doing the night his father was killed.

After the sun came up, as a local news crew was reporting from the scene, Detective Armstrong got more information about the victim.

Later, while the detective reviewed a preliminary list of evidence collected at the scene, the Oxford Weekly Planet published their coverage of the murder.

That same morning, the Fontaines' housekeeper, Stacy McCracken, came in to meet with Detective Armstrong. This is where he learned that Philip had a girlfriend.

After lunch, the detective sat down with Mr. Fontaines' girlfriend, Raquel Santos, and revealed that Philip had been having arguments with his business partner, Josie Beecher.

It will give you a sense of how to go about the trial, but you may take it anywhere you would like. The crazier the better. At the end, we will be taking a vote to see which side was the most persuasive. In the classroom, Griswold, as the judge, will announce the winner and award them with extra points that goes towards the final competition.

Eddie and Buck will never be those classic platonic friends that many claim they are. They’re not. It is not uncommon to see close friends in TV series. But Buck and Eddie are much more.

They will always be something more. In this episode they showed us that it is not something platonic, but something more. Christopher will be Buck’s ward.

If the Bucktaylors believe they have won, they are wrong. Their relationship, I feel sorry for them, is only carnal. Nothing more. Buck and Eddie are connected by a red wire (the invisible wire), they are connected with Christopher. And so it will always be.

Buck is in Eddie and Chris’s life. He always will be. Buddie is real, it will be a long slow and hard journey, but Buddie is not just in our imagination.

Coz it’s not like he’s keeping Buck around solely for Christopher’s sake. Eddie enjoys and wants to spend time with Buck (yes, we saw you, Mr. McPoutyFace when Buck teamed up with Taylor for the treasure hunt!). Eddie got mad for not being able to speak to Buck - not just about Christopher - during the lawsuit. Eddie considers Buck’s presence in his life *therapeutic*.

You’re lucky the guy you’d give your everything to, should something happen to you, is just as oblivious as you are.

And thank the Lord that you both have perfect bone structure.

“Are you sure...?” Ez asks again whilst you're taking off the helmet with some difficulties, because you drunk too much. More than usual.

You nod very convinced, while he turns his gaze from the building where Coco lives, to you. He shrugs his shoulders, taking the helmet to hang it in the handlebar. Ez turns off the motorbike when you're inside the hall, going upstairs to the flat you know by heart. The mexican and you met like ten years ago, being in inseparable since then but some months ago you started to feel something else, something bigger, for him. You think it's happened in a Mayan party, when you found yourself laying on his lap with both arms around his neck and his wrapping your body, with some fingers traveling over a side of your left thigh so kindly that melted you, your beliefs and your whole soul.

Your knuckles hit the main door, more loudly than you could think being partially deaf because of the music that was playing in the pub. You wait for some seconds till you see some light under the door. Coco opens it, rubbing his eyes kinda sleepy without wearing a shirt. You gawk at the tattoos on his chest, until he slaps your forehead with his fingers.

“Yo! Mami, it's five am, 'foc' is wro—”.

Before you let him to finish the sentence, your lips collides with his placing both arms on his neck. The kiss it's weird and a little uncomfortable, but he tastes like tequila and that's really good. Pulling him away looking at his face you know it wasn't a good idea. He's bewildered staring at you with pursed lips as you kiss them. Raising your right forefinger, trying to say something, you decide to turn over your sneakers to run away downstairs even if he's calling you, telling you to wait for him. You don't look back, down the avenue, while your legs are burning because of the fast steps going to your house.

You growl squeezing in pain with the sheets tangled in your almost naked body. The sun is on, illuminating your room in a unpleasant way. Hiding your head with the pillow, you snort heavy because of the headache hitting you thanks to the hangover. You know that what happened last night it wasn't a dream, nor a nightmare. Anyway, you confirm that fact when, after palming the bed, you find your phone. There are thirty-six missed calls and seventeen text from Coco. Turning off the wifi to avoid the double blue check, so he can't know you read them, you open the conversation.

The last message makes jump the pillow over your head to the floor. The door is almost closed and you can hear the tv on with some action movie on it. You sob because of the pain lashing your head and the shame is consuming you. Getting out of the bed, praying it's Angel who is there, you grab a shirt wearing it, sticking your head out the frame. You sob again when you find Coco staring at you, closing the door as if he didn't see you. Dragging your back down through it, you sit on the floor with your knees against your chest being surrounded by your arms.

The man pushes the door a little, but you close it again. Hearing him sighing, you shake your head.

“We have to talk”.

“Get outta' ma' house, Coco”. You blub without tears filling your eyes, just making the sound.

“That's all? You come to mine, kiss me and you're not gonna say anythen'?”

No words. You can't answer him. You're regretting what you did 'cause you thought he could feel something too. But, by the way he didn't move, nor kissed you back. The next thing you can hear is the main door being closed loud with a dry hit. You're fucked. You fucked up ten years of relationship in three seconds.

Two days passed since he left your house and you wrote Taza to ask him to change your turn at the car scrapping, so you don't have to work with Coco. And even you think that the talk it's something that will not happen, you're very, very, very wrong.

After finish your turn, when the moon is almost on top of the sky, you go out of the office downstairs seeing the mexican sitting on your bike and smoking a cigar with a no-friends-face. He's kinda angry, upset and tired of being running behind you the last days, till he finally get the perfect opportunity. You're wearing your helmet, giving him the silent treatment and checking your pocket looking for your keys.

“I got them”. He says raising his free hand, with them on his palm. “And 'am not gonna give you, if you don' talk to me”.

“There's a beautiful night with a lot of stars”. You play fool, actually talking to him as he wants.

“Why you kissed me, ah?”

“I was drunk”.

“Yea', but I know you drunk and you didn' try before”.

“For god's sake, Coco, forget it. It was just a fuckin' kiss”.

“No, it wasn't”. He says shaking his head and having a smoke. “You told me you love me”.

“I didn'”.

“Yea', when I was helping you to get outta your dress”.

You frown, gasping and trying to say something else. But you're getting so nervous that you can fall down unconscious.

“'Course I love you, you're ma' best friend, idiot”.

“Not in tha' way, shithead”.

“Wha' you wanna hear, uh?” You ask crossing your arms and curling a leg. “Yea', 'am fuckin' in love with you, but who cares? You're not. Easy. I get it. Get outta 'fuck of my bike. I'm tired and I wanna go home to keep rolling in my misery”. Taking away your keys and pushing him, you sit on.

“Who the fuc' said I'm not? 'Cause I didn'”.

Turning your head at him in slow motion, you wrinkle your nose, shaking your head for a second as if you didn't hear what you actually heard.

“'Don' know. Maybe your rude texts? The fuck you did? The fuck is wrong with you? Why you kiss me?”

“I though' you lost a bet with the fuckin' boy scout”.

“What da'... Why I... Are you fuckin' stupid?”

“No, you are! You're the one who's giving me the back!”

You sigh taking off the helmet to put it in the handle bar, as you do with your leather gloves. You're gaze is down, staring at the keys in the lock, unable to look at him. You didn't act as you should and now you don't know what is worse.

“I'm sorre'”. You mutter looking him sideways.

“Yea', you better did, bech'. 'Cause I didn' fuc' anyone for one year waitin' you and you kissed me in a weak moment”.

“Jesus Christ, Johnny!” You start to laugh loudly with your hands on your lap, licking your lips. “Sweet Jesus Christ... You're a fuckin' moron, I swear to god”.

“Move your fuckin' pretty ass to ma' house, mami. Dare to do agai' what you did last night”.

“I accept that bet, Coconut”.

Eddie's use of the phrase "now you're going to turn on me" when talking to Bobby is so... upsetting. Not to make everything about Eddie's childhood (especially when we might not even see glimpses of his childhood), but... everything literally is about Eddie's childhood.

Eddie is an isolationist; when he is hurt or bruised or bleeding inside, he turns inward and licks his own wounds, puts himself back together again until he feels some version of "complete." We have seen this countless times over the series: when Shannon died and Buck was gone; all the times when Christopher was struggling and Eddie felt, in some way, like it was his fault; when Eddie got shot and immediately went back to work, etc. But no one is an isolationist by nature; human beings are pack creatures, biologically geared to seek human comfort and relationship with those around us, which means that Eddie's isolationism goes against his very nature.

We know that Eddie had a rough childhood -- if nothing else, if no tragic queer backstory exists -- we know that his father taught him to shove down and conceal his emotions, to swallow it when it hurts because feelings don't matter in the long run, and the only thing that matters is what is. But what if there's more to it than that...? It's just. I hear that wording and I don't just hear a "bad" childhood with people who were cold and misunderstanding, I hear a childhood that was like a warzone; a study in allyship and enemies rather than community and family.

"Now you're going to turn on me," he said, because life is never a matter of who loves you and who doesn't, but rather a matter of who will align with you when they (or you) need it the most, and who will stab you in the back the first chance they get, a study in mutual exchange and benefit rather than equal and unconditional love and support.

Imagine growing up in that. Imagine learning before you even know how to drive how to navigate your family rather than just existing within it. Imagine being a child and learning how to negotiate and calculate -- because that is the Eddie Diaz way, always thinking two steps ahead of everyone else -- the best way to emerge from a situation unscathed when protection from one's flesh and blood shouldn't even enter a child's mind. (I'm SICK just thinking about this, omg)

So when we look at 5x11 and Eddie tells Bobby, "I supported you and now you're trying to turn on me," in that phrase, I hear an inner child searching for an ally he knows won't come. I hear betrayal, because the one ally he thought he could trust has turned out to be just like all the rest of them, and let's look at that for a minute. Let's look at the the significance of this wording being used with Bobby -- Bobby who actively fills a paternal role in Eddie's life, Bobby whom Eddie clings to as a surrogate parent, and whom he literally clung to when his wife died instead of immediately calling home like any one of us would -- because it's almost like he's saying, "You were supposed to be the parent I could count on, and now look at you." His lashing out is a defense mechanism in multiple ways but especially in this: if no one else will defend me, I will defend myself.

In that phrase, I hear isolation, not as a personal choice but as a state of being he has been forced into time and time again because everyone else has actively taken positions against him. He is always the outlier, always the one forced outside of the pack, a violent impermanence that informs even his interactions with the 118 (as evidenced in the bar scene). But more than anything, I hear a person slowly unfurling and learning to trust only to immediately snap closed again as a means to protectprotectprotect when it even looks like his trust has been misplaced. There's an overwhelming depth of fear there, fear from both the child who had to learn to isolate in order to survive, and the adult, whose pattern of isolation has now become his downfall and his prison.

I know there are so many headcanons about Eddie's family: his sisters aren't that bad, his parents loved him, they just went about it the wrong way, etc... but no one comes out of the womb wanting to be alone. No one comes out of the womb wanting to self-soothe when they're hurt, or contain their pain when they need to scream it. Just the opposite, actually; babies and toddlers are very loud human beings. Infants vocalize their joy and displeasure in equal measure because they are experiencing the world for the first time and have never learned not to wail and howl and laugh when they need to. But nothing I have seen of the Diaz family, nothing I have inferred about them from textual conversation and nuance, speaks to the kind of tender, unconditional love that Eddie deserved. Deserves still.

It's possible I'm thinking too hard about this; I'm exhausted and my head hurts, but just... I can't stop thinking about this.
