新年あけましておめでとうございます!
Happy New Year!
It's 2024 and a whole new year lies before us. I hope that this new year will bring you closer to all of your goals! Here are my 2024 Japanese Language Learning Goals!
1. Read one page a day of 日本の歴史366 (にほんのれきし366) every day in 2024.
This book introduces an interesting or important Japanese historical fact for elementary school students every day of the year (including February 29th for leap year). I started this book in 2023 but didn't have enough time to read it ever day. I'd like to try again in 2024 (wish me luck!).
2. Review and learn grades 4, 5, and 6 of the 教育漢字 (きょういくかんじ) - elementary school kanji.
In 2023 I mastered grades 1, 2, and 3 of the 教育漢字, and so in 2024 I'd like to finish up elementary school with the rest of the grades! That's a total of 566 kanji in 4, 5, and 6, which I think is a manageable goal for one year (the first three grades have 440 kanji total). When I say master, I mean that I'd like to be able to remember the definition and pronunciation, and be able to read the kanji, but I'll skip writing from memory because that would just take too much time with this many kanji.
3. Read at least one book every three months.
I have found that time constraints and life in general make it difficult for me to read a lot of long books in Japanese, but I think reading a book once a quarter might be manageable. I'll have to be very picky about the books I choose and keep them at or under my level for this to work.
4. Write at least one sentence in Japanese every day.
I think that one of my weakest areas is writing in Japanese. Written Japanese is different than spoken Japanese, and I'd like to be able to consistently write coherent sentences and learn where I could improve. Nothing helps you improve like consistent practice! I'd also like to try to post the sentences on HelloTalk for revisions and comments, and to push myself out of my comfort zone.
5. Practice Japanese at least 10 minutes every day.
Speaking of practice, this habit is one that I have kept up consistently for years. I try to spend at least 10 minutes of even my busiest days doing mindful review or learning, whether it be flash cards, looking up vocabulary words, looking up a kanji in the dictionary, or having an intentional conversation. Despite not having studied formally for almost 10 years, I attribute my continued growth to consistent and purposeful study.
今年もよろしくお願いします!
I look forward to your support this year, too!
I enjoy posting my successes as well as my trials and tribulations on this langblr, and I look forward to see how everyone else takes on their goals in the new year!
I wish everyone a wonderful New Year full of language learning success!

Lament of the Metatron
I did not have "become an amateur biblical apocrypha scholar" on my 2023 bingo card, but here we are, and I’m going to make you feel bad for hating the Metatron. No, really. A lot of different ✨clues ✨in S2 lead us to the Book of Enoch, which describes how the Metatron came to be. (If you would like to read what the Books of Enoch have to say about maybe-Crowley and maybe-Aziraphale, read this meta.)
There are three books of Enoch: 1 Enoch, 2 Enoch, and 3 Enoch, and after reading them I’ve concluded that they are almost certainly a major source text for Good Omens, at very least with respect to the Metatron. The translation that I used is 116 pages and quite dense, so there will be multiple metas about it (I should also note that I’ve taken great liberties with reorganizing the source text, for brevity). This one addresses the origin of the Metatron and his likely S1 and S3 motivations.
The Story
To quickly summarize the backstory: after Adam and Eve leave the Garden of Eden, a bunch of angels go to Earth, transgress against God (by having children with humans) and piss Her off. So She decides She must flood the Earth to wipe them and all their children and human associates out.
During this age of angelic iniquity, Enoch, a righteous man, the 7th generation from Adam and great-grandfather of Noah, receives visions of the coming flood.
Later, Enoch is lifted up to Heaven by a whirlwind. He gets an angel-guided tour of Heaven and visits what I will call The Mountain of Souls. He sees a mountain with four chambers and asks what they are for. Raphael states that they are for the souls of the dead, where they will be kept until Judgment Day. Enoch asks why they are separated. Raphael answers:
One for the souls of the righteous
One for the souls of sinners, who are buried in the earth, to await judgment, and on that day they will be punished
One for those who complain to, or petition, God (including Abel, who was slain by Cain)
One for the souls of those who are not righteous, “but their souls will not be killed on the day of judgment, nor will they rise from here.” (so perhaps a permanent purgatory?)
Later in his journey, Enoch sees the Valley of Judgment. Again, Raphael answers Enoch’s questions, describing “this accursed valley, is for those who are cursed for ever… [for] all those who speak with their mouths against the Lord… and here will be their place of Judgment.” Enoch comments that it would be better for the sinners if they had never been born.
Enoch also sees where the righteous will go after Judgment: “And in those days my eyes saw the Place of the Chosen Ones of Righteousness and Faith… And I saw their dwelling, under the Wings of the Lord of Spirits, and all the righteous and chosen shone in front of him, like the light of fire…. There I wished to dwell.”
The Second Parable of 1 Enoch describes how God will open the Book of the Living when the Chosen One arrives, and so Judgment Day will begin.
Enoch is taken before God and violently transformed from a human into the Metatron, a celestial being: “And I fell upon my face, and my whole body melted, and my spirit was transformed; and I cried out in a loud voice, in the spirit of power.” After Enoch is transfigured into Metatron, he is made to write 366 volumes of what I will call the Book of Deeds, wherein he writes the name of all men, everything they have done, and what afterlife they are destined for.
After sixty days spent in Heaven, angels return the Metatron to Earth to dwell with his sons for… and this is where the different books of Enoch seem to disagree whether it was for one year or thirty days, but either way, he goes back to Earth with an explicit time limit to explain to his children everything he has seen and to teach them the ways of righteousness. Which he does. The fifth book of 1 Enoch, the Epistle, describes Enoch badgering his children to be not just pretendy-good but properly good, and advising them to suffer and turn the other cheek, etc., so that they are found righteous before God on Judgment Day. He knows that at the end of this visit, he will return to Heaven, will never speak to his sons or the rest of his family for the rest of their lives, and that a Great Flood is coming to wipe out everyone on Earth except for his great-grandson Noah and Noah’s three sons, and that whatever is written in the books by then is what his other sons and grandsons and great-grandsons will be judged by on Judgment Day.
It is worth noting here that a separate scholarly analysis points out that once Enoch is transformed into Metatron, he never eats again: “Since the time when the Lord anointed me with the ointment of his glory, food has not come into me, and earthly pleasure my soul does not remember…” This is meant to show how his journey from human to celestial is opposite that of Adam and Eve, who were nourished by celestial food until they left the Garden, and from then on had to sate themselves with “nourishment for the beasts.”
At the end of this visit to Earth, he issues a final warning to his children and neighbors about the coming Judgment Day, then ascends to Heaven to rule over all the angels and to keep the Book of Deeds.
So what should we take from this?
Enoch, a good man, God’s favorite, is given visions of the destruction of Earth, abducted and taken to Heaven where he is shown the Mountain of Souls, the Valley of Damnation, and the Place of the Chosen Ones of Righteousness, he is transformed into an angel so that he may never enjoy Earthly delights again, he is told that everyone he knows, including all of his children and their children, except for one great-grandson and three great-great-grandsons, will die, and that he has limited time to coach them on how to avoid being punished, tortured, and destroyed forever, and even if he succeeds, they will be trapped in the Mountain of Souls until Judgment Day, and then he is taken from them, and given the responsibility of maintaining the records by which souls will be judged.
So let's talk about motivation.
Here we find an incredibly powerful, incredibly lonely human-turned-angel (because the other angels are both afraid and disrespectful of him), whose entire family was destroyed before his eyes and who are as of right now, as they have been for *checks watch* 5,000 years, trapped in a celestial mountain of purgatory, and the only way he can ever see them again is to bring about the Second Coming, for only on Judgment Day may they be released from the Mountain of Souls and join him before the Throne of Glory, if they heeded his warnings and are found worthy in the sight of God.
This is a highly motivated, highly traumatized anti-villain. Which is possibly the worst thing to happen to Aziraphale because if Azi has a soft spot for anyone, it’s someone whose children were taken from them by God.
******************************
For evidence of why we can selectively ignore/reinterpret Neil's statement re: the Metatron's human past, please read this meta
I read the Book of Enoch from front to back, twice, but if you want to check my work (or write a response meta!) you can find the source material here and here.
If you would like to read what the Books of Enoch have to say about maybe-Crowley and maybe-Aziraphale, read this meta.

Another set of fairytale illustrations by the Grahame Johnstone sisters - part of a specific book about the Sandman telling "366 stories" (one story for each day of the year). What is quite interesting is that this book contains stories the sisters had already illustrated elsewhere, meaning we have variations of the same story by the same illustrators.
You have for example Rapunzel...

Dear diary 🧸,
today was a big day for me as it was the annual award ceremony at school for the previous academic session of 2023 - 24. i received a prize for English and Maths, for which i was given two certificates, one book and one scholar badge. last year i had received one scholar badge as well, and it felt so good to add this new one to my collection! parents of the prize receivers were also invited and my mom had come as a part of the audience.
afterwards, she and i went for lunch at a nearby restaurant. i had italian white sauce pasta and mango milkshake (both of which were SUPER DELICIOUS) and she had veg cheese grilled sandwich. then while returning home, we bought ice-creams to have later, because summers are all about them!!
love,
me

day 8/366
today marks the first day of me getting myself together - took the first 7 days to rest and to plan out some things i want and need to do for the month
currently im making research proposals in advance since i will be pushing to do my clinical research starting this sem despite having to do it alone (or ill get more delayed in graduation). actually, im not so sure if my academic grant is and will be approved, im just praying and hoping it does so i can finally take my last 2 semesters for college, haha
during the first week, i started playing solitaire and doing sudoku and i was able to play volleyball !! not my best performance, but i spent most of the 4 hours as a libero and it kind of took out the energy in me (serving the ball is the source of adrenaline but was only able to do it thrice the whole time)
for tonight:
prayer and worship day 1/7
day 1/7 fasting from netflix, disney+ and sleep (i failed w sleep i slept after lunch)
research proposals - so far i have 3 topics listed down (2 of which are the same w different populations) and i plan to have 5 topics to present
continue studying airway management from persings' book
context for fasting sleep: i sleep a lot HAHAHA i need the extra sleep for internship but i sleep 2-3am and wake up 11-1pm so... i think backing up on sleep time is the thing i want to do
please recommend study vloggers to help me get back my focus and push !!

From the DVD commentary, episode 1:
Neil: So, we're now in a Chinese restaurant.
Douglas: Now tell us about - are you going to tell us the story about you and Terry...
Neil: Yes, I will.
Douglas: I think that's important one.
Neil: I was gonna say our location is a Chinese restaurant we'd had turned into a sushi restaurant. So Terry and I, Terry Pratchett and I, had a standing... not even a standing joke, just a standing plan, that we were going to have sushi - there was going to be a scene in Good Omens where sushi was eaten and we were gonna be extras, we were gonna sit in the background, eating sushi while it was done. And I was so looking forward to this and, so I wrote this scene with it being sushi, even though Terry was gone, with that in mind and I thought: Oh, I'll sit and I'll eat lots of sushi as an extra, this will be my scene as an extra, I'll just be in the background. And then, on the day, or a couple of days before, I realized that I couldn't do it.
Douglas: You never told me this before either. I might have pushed you into doing it, had I known. I think you were right not to tell me.
Neil: I was keeping it to me self 'cause I was always like: Oh, maybe I'll be... this will be my cameo. And then I couldn't. I was just so sad, 'cause Terry wasn't there. And it was probably the day that I missed Terry the most of all of the filming - it was just this one scene 'cause it was written for Terry and all of the sushi meals we'd ever had and all of the strange way that sushi ran through Good Omens.

Micheal Sheen was originally cast as Crowley
(I will never tire of hearing this 🥰)
Neil Gaiman: The truth is that Michael was meant to have played Crowley. That was where it all began: was me going, 'Who do I know who could be Crowley? Michael Sheen loves the book, Michael would do it.', called Michael, do you want to do it, and he's like, 'Yes!', I thought, 'Great, I have a Crowley.'. So when I started writing the scripts, I was writing them going I know I have - at least I have my Crowley, I have Michael Sheen. And around the middle of Episode 3, I was going, 'This Crowley doesn't really feel a lot like Michael Sheen.', and I wrote this sceen when Crowley comes down the center aisle of a church hopping like a man on a beach on a hot day 'cause it's walking on holy ground and I thought, 'David Tennant would be really good at that, I could get David Tennant.', and then when it was all done I figured I had to break it to Michael, that he wasn't going to be Crowley, that I wanted him to be Aziraphale, and he read the scripts, and we had this really really awkward dinner, that because I was trying to pluck the courage to break it to Michael that I wanted him to play Aziraphale, and Michael was trying to find the way to break it to me that he did not want to play Crowley that he wanted to play Aziraphale having read the scripts. So it was an awful dinner until the end where we just like, 'Oh, you too?! Oh! Oh, good! Well I'm thinking of David Tennant, oh good you like him. Okay.' So it became a lot easier at that moment.

Zach Despart at Texas Tribune:
BEAUMONT — Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, the top electoral target for a far-right faction of Republicans intent on controlling the Legislature, emerged victorious Tuesday over a well-funded challenger endorsed by Donald Trump and his allies.
Phelan defeated former Orange County Republican Party chairman David Covey, who also had the backing of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Attorney General Ken Paxton and former Texas Republican Party Chairman Matt Rinaldi. In doing so, he avoided the ignominious fate of becoming the first House speaker to lose a primary in 52 years. With all precincts reporting, Phelan was up 366 votes — within the margin that Covey can call for a recount. Covey, however, conceded in a speech to supporters at his election night party in Orange shortly after 9:30 p.m. Phelan, 48, who has seen his popularity plummet among Republicans since he backed the impeachment of Paxton on corruption and bribery charges exactly one year and one day ago, was defiant in his victory speech at JW’s Patio in Beaumont. “I will be your state rep for HD 21 and I will be your speaker for the Texas House in 2025,” Phelan said to a raucous crowd of more than 100 supporters. “This was a true grassroots effort — not the fake grassroots.”
Covey, a 34-year-old first-time candidate, not only forced Phelan into a runoff in March but secured more votes than the two-term House speaker. That outcome shocked many in the district, as Phelan was previously reelected four times without Republican opposition and hails from one of the most prominent families in Beaumont. Candidates for the Texas Legislature who trail after the first round rarely win their runoffs. Phelan carried the unique advantage of being a statewide leader with a prolific roster of political donors. Through May 20, his campaign reported spending $3.8 million on the runoff, more than double Covey’s $1.6 million. Their combined hauls amounted to what was almost certainly the most expensive state House race in Texas history. It was also an ugly contest — Phelan accused Covey of running on “lies and deceit” — where the candidates attacked each other in a flood of mailers and television advertisements.
[...] Phelan’s win is a major blow to the party’s ultraconservative faction that is led ideologically by Patrick and Paxton and financed by megadonors like West Texas oil magnate Tim Dunn. It is a group that rejects compromise and bipartisanship, demonizing Democrats and the Republicans willing to work with them. This ascendant wing has supplanted the party’s traditional focus on taxes and regulations with highly divisive social issues like transgender rights and book bans. In defeat, that group did not go quietly. Covey called Phelan an "Austin swamp creature" who only secured reelection through the support of Democrats, which he said was a "brazen act of betrayal." Paxton, an early endorser of Covey who had campaigned for the challenger as late as Tuesday afternoon, echoed the claim. The attorney general, who had vowed revenge against Phelan for supporting his impeachment, said the speaker had "blatantly stolen an election from the hard-working people of his district" by courting Democrats. Paxton said Republicans should move to closed primaries — a priority of the far right — and he issued a warning to members of the House.
[...] But whether Phelan can hold on to the speaker’s gavel is unclear. One of his own committee chairmen, Republican Rep. Tom Oliverson of Cypress, declared his candidacy for speaker in March. But no members have publicly endorsed Oliverson, and while his reelection was in doubt, Phelan was able to keep the rest of his caucus from open rebellion. [...] Attacked by his enemies as a RINO, Phelan was also widely considered more conservative than his predecessors, Phelan secured passage of the state’s near-total ban on abortion, permitless carry of handguns and several first-in-the-nation border security bills. Phelan was easily reelected speaker in January 2023 with all Democrats and almost all Republicans in support; conservative rumblings of dissatisfaction amounted to a paltry three votes for another candidate. And he batted away far-right criticism of the House’s longstanding practice of appointing Democratic committee chairs, appointing them to lead eight of 34 committees.
Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R) staves off MAGA wing/Farris Wilks/Tim Dunn-funded candidate David Covey to narrowly keep his seat and his Speakership gavel.

So I reread the Nevermoor series every year around February to April and now that I finally finished LOTR I could start with Nevermoor the day before yesterday.... I was just checking last night how many pages the Finnish edition of the first book has and wouldn't you know it's 366
Can't remember if this was just discussed in the server but one Morrigan Crow happens to have her birthday on Eventide which is technically the leap day and guess how many days does the leap year have? 366. I don't know if this was intentional from the translater or just a coincidence but there's just something about this fact that gives me joy

April is the month of new beginnings in Japan. The school year ends in March, the fiscal year ends in March, and then there is the transition to the new beginnings in April. The cherry blossoms are the biggest symbol of this transition from one school year to the next, and the beginning of work for many of those just entering the workforce.
It makes sense that April can be a new beginning for Japanese studies as well. So, for April, I wanted to rededicate myself to my studies. Honestly, I rededicate myself at least every month, and every year, because my priorities and abilities are constantly changing. I do, however, like to have certain periods of time to mark out major changes.
So what does this look like for me? I have been spending a lot of time with Japanese mom friends from my son's Japanese preschool, my son has been growing ever proficient in Japanese (thanks to his time at school, his immersion at home, and his rapidly-developing brain), which has begun to show me in detail where I am doing well and where I am deficient. I'd like to keep pace with my son's proficiency and to challenge myself (because I really love studying Japanese).
So, in general terms, I am rededicating myself to my goals from the beginning of 2024 and to studying for the JLPT N2 exam.

April Progress
I think that April was the most balanced my study has ever been amongst all the areas of study that I focus on. My goals in April included continuing my focus on Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Listening.
Here is how my goals went:
〇 = Great, △ = Decent, ✖ = Not Great
Read daily - read almost every day 〇
Write sentences 4 times a week - wrote sentences mostly 4 times a week 〇
Review kanji and vocabulary flash cards daily - didn't practice flash cards at all due to focus on other types of study ✖
Review 1-2 N3 grammar points weekly - did reviews 〇
Learn 1-2 N2 grammar points weekly - focused on practicing these using example sentences I wrote myself 〇
Listen to 1 podcast a week - yes! 〇
Continue to work on あ~お hiragana with my son, add in か~こ - yes! 〇
I am proud of sticking to the things that I wanted to do, and also incorporating more study for the N2 into my routine. Other things I did included:
Kanji & Vocabulary: Learning new vocabulary and kanji from reading Japanese books and manga, although I don't include it explicitly in my count for the study areas.
Listening: Watched the NHK Taiga drama 光る君へ (Hikaru kimi e) and understood some of the court-related words (thanks to the 日本の歴史366 daily reads) and complex dialogue.
Speaking: Continued to talk to my mom friends (ママ友) from preschool, getting advice and also embarrassing myself sometimes when I misunderstand something ^^;

May Goals
For May, I'd like to keep my momentum and excitement for studying going, and to try to focus on JLPT N2 textbooks more. I'll also try to continue reviewing N3 information. I'll keep my goals the same as in March, and just add in additional study materials where I feel necessary.
Additional Study Materials:
Renshuu.org flashcards for Kanji & Vocabulary
新にほんご500問 (Kanji, Vocabulary, Grammar drills)
日本語総まとめN2 (Kanji, Vocabulary, Grammar, Listening, Reading workbook)
外国人のための日本語敬語の使い方 (85 Basic Expressions of Japanese honorifics for Quick and Easy use, aka Keigo)
絵本 (Japanese children's books (see my photo above), to practice reading aloud large chunks of hiragana quickly)
If you've read this far, thank you! These updates are mostly motivation for me, but I hope at least the pictures are pretty and maybe you find a new resource when you read these ^.^
See you next month!
ここまで読んでいただいてありがとうございました。毎月のアップデートはほぼ自分のためだけど、面白い写真を見れるかもしれないし、それとも使えるリソースを見つかれるかもしれまない ^.^
また来月!

"Damien?"
The name made Dark's head whip up from the book he was reading, his aura ringing louder as he stared at you. The name came to your lips unbidden, but it felt...right, to say it. Like someone you had forgotten a long time ago. But...that wasn't possible, right? After all, Dark was the one who had gently told you that you had amnesia, that you couldn't remember anything. Amnesia like that was incredibly rare, rarer than what media would tell you, but it was true. Everything before that day where he reached out to where you were on the floor, speaking as softly as he could, trying to hold onto the high pitched ringing and fracturing echoes that were always there to not hurt you.
Others feared Dark, but he was only ever kind to you, even if you didn't really understand why.
You stumbled a little as you tried to step forward, grinding the heel of your palm into your temple. "Who...who's Damien? He's...he's important to me, right? I..."
"Please, sit down, you...you're looking pale."
"He...we were at a party. I...Wilford was there? But...not...Wilford--"
"Sit."
His voice brooked no argument, as you sat heavily on the couch beside him, hunching over to burrow your face into your hands. Dark wrapped an arm loosely around your front, a hand on the back of your head for comfort. Your head was throbbing, the room spinning if you dared to look up, and this odd pain in your chest and neck--
And thankful, blankness washed over you as you lost consciousness.
Dark, however, sighed, lifting his hand from the back of your head, easily shifting you to carry you. No one would even see him put you to bed, with how close your room was to his office, and besides that, it was so late he wasn't sure you had been awake in the first place. It took only a moment, before he let himself have a moment of softness. He sat beside you, gently cupping your cheek.
"I'm so sorry, my little monster. It's better if you don't remember. It'll hurt less this way."
Even he wasn't sure which of the two of you he meant.

157/366 Days of Growth
Organizing my readings with my (changed) commonplace book. I am using old book catalog magazines from a bookstore since I don't have a printer 🖨️ 😀
I am reading so much more now!!! Even studying my *** off 😅 This is great! I hope to keep up with my dear readings.
