One of my favourite anime tropes is when a character is a total dunce, but then the tutor rephrases their questions as relating to a niche interest, and they can suddenly come up with the correct answers instantly.
What's one plus one? They have no idea. You have thirty slices of cake, and five people each have one, how many slices of cake are left?
Who are all these historical figures? That's too hard to remember. Which of the prince's relatives implemented large-scale irrigation in a certain town?

I am a math tutor and for years I've been recommending a specific calculator to students. it's the favorite of all the math tutors and it's just kind of a meme for us at this point. last year I made a custom metal style t shirt of the calculator to wear while I emphatically recommend it to students. 2 months ago I got it tattooed on my arm
truly there is nothing funnier to me than the look on a students face when I'm giving them the "you need a better calculator" speech while wearing a t shirt of the calculator I'm recommending and then I lift up my sleeve and show them a tattoo of the calculator
#i am personally responsible for dozens of people buying this calculator#our tutoring center has probably generated thousands of dollars in revenue for casio. they should pay us#calculator is a casio fx 115 es plus (1st edition) and if you are going to try to argue with me about my calculator choice#you BETTER NOT try to tell me that the TI-84 is is even remotely on the same level. this is a hill im willing to kill you on#when i showed my boss he laughed for several minutes and then said 'and you picked the correct calculator'#ive literally seen peoples grades go up by entire letters when they switched to the right calculator. im very passionate about this

Research takes time, but for now, there is not even conclusive evidence that A.I. improves learning outcomes when compared with human teaching of older students. One study of nearly 1,000 Turkish high schoolers from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania compared two groups of students who were allowed access to different versions of OpenAI’s GPT-4 when studying for a math exam with a control group of students who had no generative A.I. resources. Students with access to generative A.I. did much better on practice tests for which they could use the A.I. But when all of the students were given an exam with no access to A.I., the control group with old-school study resources outperformed the group who studied with A.I.
Jessica Grose, "AI Will Destroy Critical Thinking in K-12 Education"
#AI tag#to explore further#ignore the clickbait-y headline#this is THE most common argument i am hearing from teaching & learning center staff in support of AI#“students need to use AI because it's such a good learning coach!”#“AI in edtech will level the playing field for students who don't have access to paid tutors!”#so i am VERY interested in any and all research on this question#i wish i could go back and retrain as a social scientist#i want to Run Experiments#and i want to be a more qualified interpreter/reader of experimental design like#i want to be able to better understand if a study is good or not

just tutored my friends for 3 hours straight…they ask me to help them out a lot for math and science right? and then they proceed to goof off for a lot of the time while I try to help them. sigh
#owlio's yapping#i don’t mind helping them! I love my friends#but also. constantly being the “smart tutor” friend while being in all high level classes is. Something#I’ll make time to help them out when they ask even with all my coursework and then they don’t take it seriously#they kinda goof off for a lot of the time#I know not everyone takes school or their grades as seriously but agh#idk#maybe if you ask someone to tutor you#actually pay attention and try to learn something?

In honor of yet again seeing on reddit "how do I learn a language?"
I made a longer post on it. But the absolute shortest advice I have is: pick a study material and study plan and STICK TO IT. Ideally pick a study material/materials that teach you some new stuff regularly, and progress through them. Once in a while, review what you've studied either with that material or practicing what you learned by immersing (reading/watching/listening to something or chatting with someone in the language). Ideally pick a study material/materials which teach you the skills you wish to learn - reading, listening, speaking, writing. You may need to be creative to make up ways to use your study material/materials to study those 4 skills (or whichever ones you want to focus on). If you take a traditional class, generally the teacher will give you exercises to practice and study each of the 4 skills. If you need to, look up how other people use textbooks to study the 4 skills and copy what they do.
A mistake many people make is just... not finishing the study material they pick. Yeah, if you only ever study 100 words... 4 chapters of a beginner book... you'll remain a beginner. You must move forward. Study some new stuff regularly. Expand what you know over time.
Stick to your chosen study materials until you finish them, then pick a new study material that TEACHES YOU NEW STUFF. So if you just finished Assimil, don't start a Teach Yourself book as they teach the same stuff! Move onto an intermediate learning material after you finish a beginner material!
Do not repeatedly study various beginner materials for years. This is a mistake many people make, myself included. You need to keep picking study materials which teach you NEW stuff.
Good options for someone who struggles to pick study materials or get past the beginner stage: formal classes!!!! Take beginner 1 and 2, intermediate 1 and 2! There's free and cheap courses on Coursera and other online class sites, if you don't want to go to college and pay for courses. Or pick a series of textbooks learners use in classes - f9r beginner 1 and 2, intermediate 1 and 2. This could look like Chinese textbooks that teach HSK 1-6, or Japanese Textbooks that Teach N5-N1. Yes lots of people don't like "traditional study." But if you struggle to figure out how to improve, doing up to intermediate 2 classes then just practicing reading, listening, and chatting with people will teach you enough to do many things in the language. Intermediate 2 will prepare you enough to understand SOME shows, some reading materials, talk about conversational topics.
Alternative good options for beginners who struggle to pick a study material: pick a study method or approach and copy it. Do exactly what it says, progress through it regularly studying new stuff. Refold is a study approach with directions "do anki cards - usually premade sentence decks for a language (study new stuff regularly), and immerse regularly - practice understanding". So if you like Refold, look up Refold for the language you're learning and use the resources it recommends. (I suggest NOT making your own study materials such as your own anki sentence cards if you are bad at self motivating and making your own study materials as this could cause you to give up). Dreaming Spanish is a Great comprehensible input approach to language learning with a guide on the website to follow and lessons to follow for 1000 hours and directions on what to do after. It also has a community that mentions what resources they used like podcasts, and you can copy what others did. You like ALG and are learning Thai? There's youtube channels with ALG lessons and ALG tutor/teaching websites you can book lessons on. Just pick a study approach and STICK TO IT.
As long as you study new stuff regularly, and practice understanding the things you have studied before, you will learn a language. It mostly comes down to that, and how many hours you study.
Some people just keep repeatedly studying stuff they already studied so they don't make progress, or they studied 50 hours when... its probably going to take hundreds or thousands of hours.
If you like a very specific study method for a very specific goal? Find someone who already achieved your goal with your study method, and copy what they did. Use the materials they used (or improve on what they did and find equivalent materials that work better for you). Do the study activities they did. You have a good chance of getting similar results. That's how I came up with all my reading study plans... I found someone who'd already learned to read chinese, or french, and copied what they did. It worked. I'm using Dreaming Spanish as a guide now to figure out how to improve my listening skills, copying the suggestions dreaming spanish has for studying, its working well so far. I found the Listening Reading Method really cool, and copied that for a while, and did see significant improvements in my reading and listening skill after doing it.
#rant#study plan#study method#langblr#what i see a lot of is people trying duolingo (for beginners) rhen a beginner textbook then a beginner tutor then a beginner anki deck#and wonder why theyre still beginners who cant do what they want in the languahe#well yeah..#they studied the same 1000 words and basic grammar multiple times instead of moving onto new study material to learn#or they've studied 5-20 minutes a day for a year and wonder why theyre still a beginner... its going to take hundreds of hours to improve...#you either need to give yourself more years to see improvement OR increase study hours daily.#like duolingo is JUST beginner level stuff. if you spend 4 years doing it then thats 4 years youre studying beginner content#which is fine! just be aware it will not be until year 5 when you pick a new intermediate study material with new atuff to learn#that you move beyond beginner level knowledge and skills#youre still improving! its fine to spend 4 years on beginner material as long as youre regularly stusying new stuff to you#but of course it will mean you wont see that advanced skill level in those 4 years

Finally getting to my thoughts on the heart killers episode 1 and honestly it was better than I expected. Maybe it's because I didn't have many expectations to begin with. As long as I have my beloved joongdunk on my screen together I am a happy woman. But this episode was so fun and interesting and I am so excited for what's to come. I have so much I want to talk about so I think I'm going to make separate posts about each of them. Yes I am writing 10 different essays at the same time just like I did with bbs and that is a good thing. It means I am excited about the show itself and not just the actors. It was more than an hour long episode (I love that it was so long) and I enjoyed every moment of it.
I love the pacing of this episode too. It's not rushed at all, yet it's jam packed and doesn't waste time on unnecessary things. Except the burger mukbangs by First. Why was there an asmr burger mukbang not once but twice in this episode? I mean I don't mind but the question remains. This was the one thing that totally threw me off guard. Again I am not upset about it at all but I can't stop thinking why this decision was made? Is it because everyone in that production team loves watching First eat? Actually, that is quite a reasonable speculation. Yes I dedicated an entire paragraph to First's mukbangs because I really can't stop thinking about it.
I am so so glad my beloved joongdunk got the opportunity to be part of a production like this. This is so different from their previous projects and I can already see that they got the chance to explore as actors in ways they couldn't before. And I love that for them. My joongdunk heart is happy and content.
Also have to mention I love firstkhao in this too. I may focus more on joongdunk because I am a hardcore joongdunk simp but I really do appreciate all the other people involved in this project as well. Everyone put a lot of love and effort into this show and I appreciate that.
I don't know how this series will turn out in the future. But I already know I am going to love it. It has everything I enjoy- a fun story, interesting characters and character dynamics, fun lighting choices that contribute to the storytelling, music that sets the tone of the scenes, my favorite kind of pacing, good actors, good production and most importantly my beloved joongdunk. Thank you so much Jojo for bringing this show to life. I am eagerly anticipating what's to come and I am having a blast along the way.
The fact that we are going to get most of the scenes from the trailer and the bts photos in the first 2 episodes already is so exciting to me as well. This means we have no idea what will happen after ep 3. And that is so fun and exciting. I love that they did that. It makes me anticipate what's to come even more. Jojo, I love you, I really do. This show of yours is right up my alley.
Fun fact about me that nobody asked for: I have not seen 10 things I hate about you. Which is actually pretty weird because I have seen most romcoms from that time period, some even less popular than this one. I don't know why or how I missed it. I also refuse to read Shakespeare for very petty reasons. So yeah, I really have no idea what to expect from thk. But that makes it extra fun for me.
#the heart killers#thk#ep1#i love this show already#i wanted to start ranting about it last night when i watched it#but i was too busy tutoring my cousin on maths for her exam today#yes i watched the episode in the middle of teaching maths#that is my level of dedication for joongdunk#i watched it while she was practicing tge problems by herself#so i watched it in parts#also i ended up with a masive headache last night#so i just fell asleep after we were done fighting with the math problems instead of rewatching the episode#now that i am well rested and also had some time to process i can't wait to rewatch it today#i am so going to write 50 different essays on this show#i love you jojo i will forever be thankful to you for this series#also i totally see the romcom aspect of it now#also thk doesn't seem to have any sponsers? right? this means no product placement right?

Salieri’s whole childhood experience of being orphaned while prior having not so good relationship with his father, and then pretty much tutoring every willing person free of charge and leading charity concerts for any category of people makes him so admirable honestly
Man looked at his past experiences and said ‘no one’s having same shit on my watch’ and high key parented almost everyone he met or tutored in his life
I feel like no matter what class or amount of fucked up spirit origin Salieri always will prioritize children or teens be it humans or other servants. Even if it’s child like servants with adult minds he still acts on his parenting instinct without being insulting to other party (and they probably don’t even notice it until much later).
If anything even happens man will BEND his own already fucked up and extremely unstable spirit origin and even maybe overcome his own Innocent Monster/Man in Gray aspect to PROTECC and ATACC if it means young ones will be save
Salieri really be thinking he’s not that good of an any positive image of a mentor or god forbid parental/family figure and then the rest are like ‘you’re literally a perfect parent figure what the actual fuck sir—‘
#fate grand order#fgo#antonio salieri#man parents his own minions and every child he meets#be they orphaned or no he adopts them automatically#it’s his passive skill of EX level#salieri is literally being best teacher/parental figure out there without even trying to#salieri: I am a bad influence and not good at tutoring or being a parental figure to those children#says the man surrounded by happy children and teen servants like they’re ducklings following their duck mom#children be constantly addressing him either as uncle/papa/mama/teacher and so on salieri probably doesn’t even catch on that#he probably also parents half of adult servants too without others even realizing HDBJDNDJDJDJ#he’s the Grand Parental Figure#Idek it’s so funny and sad that a literal Avenger wronged by humanity as a whole is pretty much cares so much about others’ well-being

love when this is referred to as the gifted kid website. shockingly my mental disorders made me mentally disordered and school never really vibed with that so. couldn’t be me
#ppl always talking about their whatever grade reading level and how many books they’d read as kids and im just over here like🧍🏽#I’ve never been actually bad at english or reading but I couldn’t focus on reading books to save my fucking life#I hated those sheets where you had to read like a certain number of books or whatever over the course of a semester or the year or whatever#my GATE test scores for english were super high but my math was bad enough that I never qualified#and adhd made me not even perform well in English half the time because I couldn’t pay attention I couldn’t read long books I couldn’t turn#in my assignments or if I did they were late and etc etc etc#don’t get me started with math#I was the worst in my class in third grade at minute math and never made it to the levels of minute math my classmates did#(they posted results on the wall for everyone to see)#and in 6th grade I was put into an additional remedial math class#throughout middle-high school I was at the level of most classmates in terms of the classes I took but that’s only because I was not allowe#to fail and was put through absolute fucking hell with a billion tutors and grueling hours of extra work from them and blah blah blah#like I remember how I felt in those tutoring sessions and half the time I actually wanted to cry.#I didn’t start doing solidly genuinely Good in school until senior year of high school.#not coincidentally around the same time I started taking adderall I think#I had accommodations by 9th grade but they didn’t do that much except for the function that let me turn in assignments up to 2 days late#without penalty. which i had teachers question sometimes and i had to pull the Yeah it’s Literally Against The Law to not allow me this car#anyway. point is. i was never in the gate program and most of my friends were and it was mostly adhd related#adhd is considered such a quirky nothing disorder nowadays that I don’t even like mentioning I have it really. because what people think of#when I say the term is Not what i actually dealt with and made school torturous and made my parents lash out at me for things and etc etc#depression and dysphoria did not help either. but I digress#I’m not sure why im making this post#kibumblabs

so I did start college (British A Levels) this September and I've been rotating the idea of a OP (British) college AU in my head for like a week now.. yes its been done probably one billion million times but I have Thoughts okay
- Nami being picked up from a street gang and going from a career making maps for heists to pursuing cartography at A level
- Zoro doing some type of sports studies and attending a fencing club
- Sanji being forced to do business studies, economics and politics like the rest of his siblings before picking up an apprenticeship at the Baratie
- Chopper being a little kid who's so smart he came to college with a scholarship for medicine at the age of 13 - didn't even attend highschool and grew up in the mountains with Kureha
- Brook haunting the music room and being a famous musician who used to work at the college before he died
- Law taking medicine but also marine biology with the rest of the Heart Pirates
- Cora being an ex-mafioso that now teaches law
- Perona doing a textiles apprenticeship with Moria
- Yamato being a PE gym bro
#i feel like the obvious choice would be jinbe as marine biology tutor#or smth water related#but hes kinda giving linguistics to me idk why#im rotating the idea of the minks being like were-people too#carrot and bepo and the curse of the were-rabbit#one piece#op au#one piece au#op#op fic#waffling#straw hat pirates#monkey d. luffy#heart pirates#A levels au#lmao

i know this is news to nobody but god, duel links's skills are getting out of hand
#basically all the newer ones for speed duel are just 'get full combo for free and some extra shit on top because why not'#tutoring for super poly alone should qualify dragonic contact as a war crime but then it's also gotta give you TWO (2) more cards on top#and chivalrous celerity is a worrying sign that they may be starting to creep into rush duels as well. which feels pretty foreboding#(seriously though. who thought that The Format With No Tutors Ever needed to let you search for THREE cards at once)#(even when they knew they HAD to hit the deck they only did a banlist instead of nerfing the skill itself. which feels. Concerning™)#yugioh#duel links#EDIT: wait actually never mind that last bit i just saw they're nerfing it soon. weird they're doing that separate from the banlist hits#thank goodness too. preventing you from using metallions/heroes with it should actually take it to a reasonable level. good riddance too#as a known dragon lover i'm a bit sad to see the dragon fusion skill (and the psychic one) is getting hit too but tbh that's probably fair
