SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He was the dorky school kid who spent his weekends at the Australian Museum. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on a career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. His first gigs were spent as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist, and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. That compares to the ABC’s overall radio listenership of just 5.6 per cent. The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Fourth Strike Dec-Jan-Feb Roundup!
(It's Bandcamp Friday. 100% of today's proceeds go towards California wildfire relief)
Hey everyone! It's 2025 now, and while January was tied up with prepping and releasing we've been the garages, it's February now, which means: Roundup time!
Our first roundup of 2025 is absolutely FILLED with new music, podcast appearances, and disintegrating perceptions of the self, brought to you with love from Fourth Strike. Also, cool shirts.
Let's jump into it:
--
The Garages released another EXPANSION single! "I'm Starting to Lose My Sense of Self," by @rosieeeeeeeee is out now on Bandcamp.
It'll be up on Spotify as a double single with Shark Hunter soon, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears primed! And pre-order the album if you haven't yet :)
--
2. Two years ago, Skates wrote an indie horror game about women's rowing team. Now, in the wake of increasingly hostile sentiment and policy against trans folks, especially trans women (including a new American executive order ban on trans women in sports), they're giving 100% of game proceeds from this month to Athlete Ally and Callen-Lorde.
--
3. Resni released a whopping 62-track soundtrack for their game, Stardust Demon. Let me say that again: 62. Tracks.
--
4. @girltentacles and friends made a Christmas song! It came out on Christmas; we're just late to the party. Don't waste any more time not listening to it!
--
5. New @girlballz music! Demos, covers, and new originals, oh my!
Fae're also doing February Album Writing Month, where it's challenged to write 14 songs in 28 days. You can follow along with faer progress here:
--
6. Bertie's new band, Cardboard Chords, released two singles in the last three months, with another one set to drop on Valentine's Day. Pre-orders open now!
--
7. If you missed them last time around, Yuppie Supper ( @thwackamabob ) shirts are back! They'll stay up until sizes run out... or a new EP releases 👀
The band's also migrated to BlueSky--you can catch up with them here!
--
8. Sister Sickness released its new single "Break My Bones" on SoundCloud! Check it out here:
--
9. @clemkesh is doing a guest run on the podcast Quest Friends! as the singing voice of player character Sparky! Her first appearance is on Episode 46: "Swanshine!"
There're also extended versions of the songs released as separate cuts--you can find those over on the Quest Friends! website:
--
10. Louisa also wrote, co-sang, and produced a duet for this year's Secret Samol, a Friends at the Table annual fanart exchange:
youtube
--
10. @robnotes's part of a 48 hour charity stream for Children on the Edge! They're managing the stream today--at the top of the hour, actually-- and they'll be hosting the feed on Sunday, Feb 9th from 10am - 3pm GMT. Come say hi!

i think the biggest mistake an audience can make (i.e. me) with a time-paradox story is to try to make sense of it. like there's the surface-level logic here that sisko can be a "chosen one" of sorts because, well, he always was. if you can look down on the fourth dimension of time and see it all laid out in the same way we can look down a two-dimensional square, then everything always is and verb-tenses mean nothing and the layout of What Is is. but that's just so so abstract. (!)
what ends up being implied by the idea of extra-dimensional beings like the prophets is determinism. which doesn't. like. make sense. not from our perspective at least. the universe is just too much for us to be able to see a character like sisko able to interpret the space between what the prophets say and what he should then decide. the prophet above is saying "you need to rest now" and the prophets said that sisko has a path he is "meant" to walk--so was he always going to decide to both marry kasidy and "learn" among the prophets in the wormhole? if his decision-making has no power, why would the prophets tell him what to do to begin with? he says he's already done all the things he is going to do, sort of, so what is his relationship with spacetime? how can someone exist in between non-linear beings and linear time? what makes sisko special--is it his decision-making or his determined life?
i get the feeling this ending for the character was supposed to provoke these sorts of questions but i can't get past how it makes very little sense to me. which i guess is my own reaction to time-paradox stories: arrival and interstellar and even the "children of time" episode of ds9, none successfully convince me of the know-ability of time. even kasidy asking in the prophet vision "is anyone here?" makes my brain hurt, because, like, yeah is anyone there? where do these creatures exist? where and when and how? and in what ways can they contribute to the fabric of a mutable and constantly morphing or expanding and evolving universe?
obviously, it's not like a few sci-fi writers are going to do what only theoretical physicists can only imagine, but something about the tone of this episode, the design and the dialogue, suggests something answer-able. "meant to" and "alone" and "rest" and "ben? is that you?" are temporal and, in the logic of this story, are determined? there are ways to suggest more ambiguity, to lean into the logic of paradoxes--using color and music to imply that nothing here is figured out, that sisko is just a man invited into a perspective that we haven't yet been able to understand. a star trek-y "how mysterious, how weird" sort of answer that emphasizes that tying-up loose ends isn't the best narrative resolution sometimes.
this conclusion for sisko is a bit ambiguous but also not. and i sort of wish kasidy had gone with him. what does pregnancy look like where everything already was and is and yet to come? what is a romance undefined by the progressive beats of relationships and intimacy? what would their relationship say about the ongoing-ness of love?

The Sojourn is a really good podcast/audio drama. The foley is fantastic, the music perfectly complements the events it backs, and all the voice acting is professional. I just finished episode 4 and I have like… minor story gripes but most of them can be hand waved away by saying “it’s sci fi, fuck off.” Basically… why is the head of this major expedition, going on away missions for weeks at a time? Why is the crew of the away mission splitting up? To which someone reading this chucks a box set of Star Trek TOS at my head.
Also I have no idea how travel works in this setting. There’s drift gates which is like… teleportation ftl. There’s the currents which are like stable smears in spacetime. Standard travel is considered really slow but also it only takes a few weeks to go visit a star system that you’re not in? You need a transfer window but you can get to the edge of the system from the star in two days? To which someone reading this chucks a box set of Firefly at my head
Whatever, at least we seem to be getting nepo baby lesbian romance.

raihan
Why I like them: He's that guy that you THINK'S gonna be a total douche but is actually a really great guy once you get past first impressions. Liable to do something stupid trying to impress you. Dragon in human form. Canon fang haver. Brags about himself in the third person and should not be trusted with tapestries. Babygirl you need so much therapy /aff
Why I don’t: That hat that can't decide weather it's a sweatband or a beany. Seriously what is that thing on your head man
Favorite episode (scene if movie): Haven't watched any of his anime scenes tbh, kind of scared to after how dirty they did Leon. So I'll just use this section to show some love to the bit in Pokespe where he tries to take on Eternatus... himself. Not using a Pokemon.
Favorite season/movie: See above
Favorite line: ...I'm just gonna put "Especially you, Piers! The way you battled me in the Champion Cup... You really had my Dynamax Pokémon up against the wall!" and apologize profusely. Yes for ship reasons but also the fact that the guy starts hitting on a new rival in the middle of a Dynamax Pokemon rampage just feels weirdly on-brand?
Favorite outfit: Shout out to that slightly douchey waistcoat ensemble with the Flygon shades from Masters...which he has a matching stupid, stupid hat for.
OTP: Raihan/Leon/Piers and Raihan/Piers both qualify. Leon just straight up hits the "you don't even have to Ship It, some characters having had sex is just objective truth" threshold and they're often really sweet together, I just have to throw an alt boy in there too to get into it because my brain craves them like a body craves air. And Piers...they get tragically few scenes together but the ones they do get are so weirdly charged? Like someone else said there's a certain "should we be watching this?" energy to them lol
Brotp: Leon also goes here, mostly because coming up for platonic explanations for the sheer depth of Raihan's brain rot in regards to that man leads to some FASCINATING relationship dynamics. I'm a big believer that romantic vs platonic indicates a relationship type rather than inherently implying a hierarchy of importance and these two are a great outlet for mentally rotating those themes. Also he and Gordie are fun in Masters, I like to think that they became friends while having shared sadboy time in the locker room.
Head Canon: Probably my biggest is that with the way there's some pretty depressing shit left unsaid about the way he views himself, the occasional signs of anger issues he shows, and how he's the only member of The Rivalcule you don't meet the family of, the guy did NOT have a good childhood. On a lighter note, the guy has absolutely dogshit music taste. Like we're talking Skrillex and below here. The fact Piers doesn't strangle him over it is testament to the depth of his affection.
Unpopular opinion: Don't really have one?
A wish: Gigantamax Archaludon whenever the Galar remakes come out in 10-15 years, he deserves to just summon a wholeass suspension bridge (that notably has a weather-related signature move at that). And, well, just more of him in general.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: Same as Piers, please don't throw this man into spacetime GameFreak 🤞
5 words to best describe them: Selfie boy kinda worries me 😔
My nickname for them: Rai, Rai-Rai...💖🐉

Hey, there, Toy Fans, it's another look back at some more of the Kenner line of Spacetime Sally action figures! Last week we took a brief look at the evolution of the Sally figure, and, this week, we'll take a look at some secondary-character action figures.
Starting with the above: Top left: A very special promotional figure of starfighter extraordinaire, Lance Battleshine, from the Spacetime Sally Animated Adventures. A one-off character and special-guest star lending his voice to the role, you may recognize him as none other than pop music sensation, David Jones. Jones originally didn't want the job, and the only line he speaks in his episode is at the end, when he says, "El-low, Sal-ee" in that unmistakable British-accented voice. Top right: The Sally figure from the Lance Battleshine episode. Bottom Left: Special Agent Paul Townshend in AstroAction Suit. Bottom Right: Metro Sector L SecurityBot.
But wait, there's more!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Various Bot figures. Top Left: Manny and Mortimer, the unorganized crime duo from the episode, "Modest Score" and, Top Right: Darla-9 from various episodes. Bottom Row: recurring characters, Paladin Fiver-Fiver, Rosco with his CommsBot and Coteko, A-D-4U.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More recurring characters: Top Row: Left: Commander Raul Jimenez with "bear hug crushing action" and Right: Genevieve Contreras in Mechanics' Spacesuit. Bottom: FlippJett Suit Agent Paul Townshend, and an Agent Townshend figure from the episode, "Call Me, Ishmael"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And three more various Sally figures to close out this week's further look at Kenner's line of Spacetime Sally action figures. Tune in next week when we look at the line-up of figures that LJN Toys offered up on toy shelves.

Good news: as long as the black hole is big enough you can sail through the event horizon without harm and get to experience the interior of the black hole before you’re annihilated by the central singularity. Or so we once thought. These days, quite a few physicists believe that the only way to avoid horrible contradictions in fundamental physics generated by black holes is for all them to be surrounded by screens of extreme energy that prevent anything from ever entering the event horizon. Sounds outlandish? Welcome to black holes. So let’s find out why many of our most brilliant physicists take these black hole firewalls deadly seriously. PBS Member Stations rely on viewers like you. The Rutles - Inspector Spacetime
The unofficial Inspector Spacetime Wiki Madman with a Booth has now reached its 300th article! First inspired by Community's "Biology 101" and based on the expanded fanmade canon from TV Tropes, it's been affectionately parodying "That Ripoff" since September 2011‎.
The Rutles and their music featured in the Fifteenth Inspector's episode "The Devil's Interval":
The Fifteenth Inspector and Lucy Skye meet The Rutles in 1960 but discover that the The Bandmaster and his crew of Radio Pirates are changing history to displace the "Pre-Fab Four" from their position as the most influential band of all time. Instead, the Bandmaster is promoting a little-known Liverpudlian group called The Quarrymen. The Inspector takes Dirk, Ron, Stig, and Barry on a "Tragical History Tour" in the BOOTH to see how their music will change the future. This gives them the opportunity to plagiarise themselves, and they return with their notebooks full of hits. The departing Inspector calls The Rutles' story, "A living legend, a legend that will live long after lots of other living legends have died."

okay so time currently in the doctor who universe is very… bendy atm
easily influenced, as seen by the mavity joke, especially because the word gravity, in the context that donna was using it, already existed in 1666, and had been in use since the early 1500s. also i this is a silly little theory i do not think rtd knows the etymology of ‘gravity’
(examples below the cut)
anyway, i know that it was just a joke, but it potentially implies that time as a whole is being warped incredibly easily, and with that, space and the universe, since within the whoniverse, space and time are deeply connected (they probably are in real life too idk). the fragility of spacetime could also potentially be a result of the loosening borders between universes/realities, which ties in with the toymaker, as he exists outside of the known universe, and since the timewar effectively closed off the universe (apart from in the doctor’s wife i guess and season 2) it could be a sign of something deeper. i also think that tampering with superstition may reappear in the next episode, perhaps, because jt seemed like a very specific thing to include.
i’ve seen a few theories about how the music used in certain scenes is similar or the same to rose’s theme and themes used when the universe’s walls were weakening, but i don’t know enough about music to comment on that
another important thing is that the doctor does remember the word gravity, which aligns with them in past stories being aware of changes in time, such as in the waters of mars
i don’t have a super clear point here but i might rewrite this later (not at 2:21 am) to sort out my points a bit
Origin:
late 15th century (in gravity (sense 2)): from Old French, or from Latin gravitas ‘weight, seriousness’, from gravis ‘heavy’. gravity (sense 1) dates from the 17th century.
^Oxford Languages
I.3.1509Weighty dignity; reverend seriousness; serious or solemn conduct or demeanour befitting a ceremony, an office, etc.; staidness. In later use with wider application: seriousness or sobriety (of conduct, bearing, speech, temperament, etc.); opposed to levity and gaiety.
1509: Let these folys auoyde this mad mysuse And folowe the right way of vertuous grauyte.

SpaceTime -- A brief history SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year.

I'm about a dozen episode in to Super Dimension Fortress Macross and I'm having a blast.
It's kind of weird watching this thing for the first time with my head full of ROBOTECH memories. It all looks very familiar... But the storyline and characters are different. And the music is very different. There's a constant mixture of familiarity and surprise.
I'm not going to recap every episode like I did with the last couple of OVAs... But I've got to mention a few things that really stood out to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We get a quick exposition dump at the beginning of the series that explains how the SDF crashed to Earth and sparked the "Unification Wars". It's very brief little sequence to set up the world... And now, having watched Macross Zero, it feels wholly insufficient.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like the timelapse showing the wrecked ship being slowly rebuilt over the course of 10 years. And seeing that city grow up around it really helps set the scale. The SDF is huge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The opening credits are absolutely beautiful. Still gorgeous all these years later. And they definitely look better than the bulk of the animation in the show - I guess you get a better budget for a sequence that'll be shown every episode?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously they were being attacked by a whole fleet and didn't have a lot of options... But it still seems like utter madness that they attempted a spacefold at all - much less within such close proximity to a city. That's completely untested alien technology. And they've already gotten two surprises out of this ship - the gravity control drives floating away from the ship, and the booby-trap. I guess they were desperate? Still feels like insanity.
Tumblr media
And they completely gloss-over the deaths of hundreds of people aboard those aircraft carriers. Oh well. Good thing those civilians were in airtight shelters!
Tumblr media
I like how little they react to the entire fold system just straight-up vanishing. "Well, it's gone... But I think we can use this funky spacetime residue as a defensive system!"
Tumblr media
Also... Does that head scientist guy have funky eyes? Is he supposed to be weird-looking? Does that mean something? Or is it just janky animation?
Tumblr media
I love that they keep operating these aircraft carriers exactly the same even though they're in space. Elevators, ground crews, catapults, catch lines - the whole thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The SDF's transformation is kind of crazy. This thing is something like a kilometer long. It's city-sized. And it turns into a giant robot with aircraft carriers for arms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The scale is something that just keeps amazing me. The Zentradi are something like 10-15 meters tall. They're building-sized.
These giant, transforming robots are getting their asses kicked in hand-to-hand combat with an unarmed Zentradi.

TROBEDISON ROOMATE HCS PLS I WOULD LIKE 2 HEAR!!
YES LETS GO TROBEDISON !!!
midnight icecream together!!! they're all in their pjs (troy and abed got annie a set of pjs for their first christmas/notchristmas/notpresent/hanukkah/holidayday/gift not gift that matched theirs but in purple :)) they eat icecream with sprinkles, with chocolate syrup, with marshmallows, with chopped nuts on top, with multiple flakes, with m&ms - the whole shebang. they might have some inspector spacetime in the background whilst they talk and giggle and make funny faces at each other. they leave the dishes in the sink for later that morning and probably end up sleeping and cuddling together on cushions or on the sofa for the rest of the night.
annie has lots of pillows and bears and plushies etc, a whole collection. so, troy and abed decide to get her a new plush every birthday/not Christmas Christmas holiday day or just when they see one that looks cool and so her whole bed is just filled with different animals or weirdly shaped cushions they found in charity shops or drugstores or furniture stores or ebay or something lol (they make sure they clean them beforehand obviously so they smell of nice lavender fabric conditioner) and annie allows them to name some of them too ;)
Annie listens to Mitski, she a mitski gal like me, and she tends to listen to 'bury me at make out creek' or 'lush' albums when she's sad or feels overwhelmed with emotions or feeling insecure :// so when Troy hears the familiar sound of Francis Forever through her door when he goes to ask if she wants takeout tonight, he knocks on the door before entering and seeing her on her bed with a tear stricken face :( he gives her a big big hug, turns the music off and just holds her and tells her the things that happened in his day, like how he saw a cat with one eye outside the apartment building and tried to feed it the leftover chips he had at lunch but it might have scratched him and the cut on his hand don't look so good and then annie bursts into laughter and slaps troy's chest calling him an idiot and fixes up his hand so it doesn't get infected
abed and annie watch the xfiles together, they go through s1-s9 and even dress up as fox mulder and dana scully respectively for one Halloween!!! they watch the movies together and think up of their own conspiracies about the show or real life government. and it's partially what pushed Annie to pursue forensics and the fbi further and Abed 100% backed her and encouraged her (also got her to promise to give him a special fbi hq tour and may or may not write his own spin off special episode take on Annie working at the fbi hehe and also makes sure she reports back all the tales she has for script inspo) when the latter seasons of 10&11 come out whilst they're apart, they Skype each other and do watch parties and britta might pitch in too.
Abed loves his buttered noodles and Troy loves eating pizza all the time and as much as Annie loves takeout and easy eating, she knows its not healthy to have it all the time (and its expensive!!!) so they have a day of the week (I'm feeling Thursday) when they cook a proper homecooked meal together like lasagna or chili con carne and save leftovers for lunch the next day too. Annie also makes sure they eat some fruit so sometimes when they study she makes them all fruit cups and adds a little bit of sprinkled sugar ontop of strawberries ;)
Troy loves to bake. he loves it. he loves making a mess of flour and sugar and having his friends and family tasting his creations. he learnt a lot from Shirley and makes a realllll good pumpkin pie for thanksgiving every year. he loves making apple crumble bc of the texture and he loves decorating cakes and cupcakes (though he does like drawing dicks with icing and makes jokes whenever someone eats one lol) and although he doesn't celebrate birthdays, he still makes abed and annie a cake and he gets them to decorate it with him so it has a some of the flair of the not birthday person. I feel like baking is one of his love languages and he just loves to feed his family the delicious treats and gets super happy when they like them or bake with him :)))
obviously movie nights!! binging tv show nights!! movie marathons!! popcorn galore!! they all know each others comfort movie/show and just watch and cuddle on the sofa when they need it
pillow and blanket forts <33 they might have little studies sessions in them or troy and abed just go to Annie's room and sit in her bed on the many pillows she has hehe
they just love each other and are always there for each other <3 I love them and they're my fave trio <3

Tagged by @spacewives-in-spacetime!!!! Thank you I love saying things thank you for the opportunity to do so <3
Three ships: River Song/Rose Tyler (and all other nounpolycule combos but I, Tumblr user riverrose, do not shut up about riverrose. Shocking, I know.), Rumbelle (listen. I would be a different person if Emilie de Ravin had not become a regular on OUAT), and let's go Percabeth since they were my intro to fandom being a thing that exists.
Last song: Began writing this to Love Like Woe by The Ready Set, ended it listening to Drag is Magic by Nina West. Currently listening to my "every upbeat song that was in my music library the day I created this playlist" playlist as I work on latework.
Last movie: Antman! Genuinely a solid 90%+ of the movies I watch are Thursday movie nights with Eliza lmao
Currently reading: Define "reading"? Books I would claim to be reading at the moment include Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse, Yiddishkeit: Jewish Vernacular & the New Land, The Talmud: A Biography by Harry Freedman, Le Petit Prince in the original French, and a collection of essays on spider evolution. In practice? I am skimming my reading for my history class and my evolution class just thoroughly enough to get by.
Currently watching: Once Upon A Time (my first time rewatching his early episodes since deciding I don't actually hate Hook so so so so so so so so so much and he is in fact a meow meow), Dexter, and the Doctor Who episode Mummy On The Orient Express - I mean I am watching Doctor Who and have not watched the same episode 4 times in the last like 3 weeks. Don't look at me. Also I am theoretically watching Lost but we'll see when I have the brain power to continue it.
Currently consuming: Trail mix! Specifically I'm picking out the wasabi peas which will inevitably lead to me being whiny about not having any wasabi peas in my trail mix later.
Currently craving: A six cheese bagel with garden veggie shmear like I'm craving every waking moment. Obviously. Also craving rewatching the 1996 Moll Flanders mini series staring Alex Kingston.
Uuuuuuh I believe this is supposed to be tag 9 people?: @zaricats, @ashdoesfandom, @regenderate, @godlovesdykes, @berylgrace, @tenteen, @quantumshade, @lesbiandonnanoble, and @lesbiantwelve
