Inspired by the Florencia-class Outrider from the audio drama The Sojourn.
___
On some journeys, the real ships are the ones you make along the way. The Sledual isn't so much a class as it is a suggestion, cobbled together from the cheapest CotS ships parts one could reasonably expect to find in the First and Second Great Expansions. They might as well hang a sign that says 'have engines, will travel' and call it a day. Held together by struts, duck tape, and a dream, the plentiful negative space makes the design surprisingly for its dimensions as well as greatly reducing the impact of hits to its center of mass that would otherwise core a ship of similar size. In case of direct hits to the one of the catamaran like hulls, all critical systems are duplicated in both sides for redundancy. While the Sledual could be dismissively written off as two frigates in a trench coat disguised as a capital ship, the metaphor wouldn't be too far off the mark. However with this great reduction in mass comes increased maneuverability, if not speed, and the approximation of a class mounts two retro thrusters on the bow for faster breaking and flipping. A Sledual might not be able to outrun you, but by the star gods it'll get one helluva head start. Between its slim profile and surprising nimble for a capital, it might even manage to dodge any incoming fire that its four intercardinally mounted PDGs fail to intercept. As a C4I platform, the Sledual's primary advantage however will be defense in depth, lurking amongst the back any battle sphere where it can coordinate fire plans for the more capable and dangerous ships of the wall screening it. Popular with ragtag free colony cells, cash strapped system defense forces, and stingy megacorp security, the Sledual is a force multiplier for any fleet.

All the use of, like, age of sail-based worldbuilding and naval terminology in The Sojourn is generally something I find to be a very cool and unique aesthetic, but "boat bay" instead of "hangar bay" is something I can't quite take seriously yet.

Wuff I love caring about shit that has little to no fan following, means my headcanons ARE fanon. Anyway Meds from The Sojourn is a trans woman and has a “coworkers who fuck” thing going with Croft. Also that one guy who briefly had Larissa’s job is very eggy.
It probably has fans, just not on tumblr. Nothing appears when I try to tag it so I’m one of the few posting here.

I realize the probability of any of my followers having even heard of it is negligible, but I made a sideblog dedicated to the only other story that can make me go as insane as Star Wars does:
Daniel Orrett's The Sojourn.
Unlike most of Star Wars, this series is also actually good, but most of what I have to say is probably about the two sapphics on a small spaceship with two other people.

Following something like The Sojourn from the earliest publicly announced stages of its development is a hell of an experience.
I remember... fuck, six and a half years ago now, trying to extrapolate from the tiny sample size of the first Guinevere breakdown on Spacedock and the short thing about designing the Stardancer to come up with headcanons about the CDF ships named in a now-unlisted Atamara Crossroads battle breakdown video on EckhartsLadder, which did include the Leander-class destroyer, Confiance-class frigate, and Tetrarch-class first-rate ship of the line that are known of today, but also mentioned a Gatekeeper-class second-rate ship of the line that I haven't heard of since then. Obviously, the stuff I did extrapolate from that was terrible in hindsight.
Because this is the kind of thing I remember instead of remembering important real life adult shit, there was a Q&A stream on Twitch around then in which someone asked about dedicated carriers and Daniel said such a thing did exist, namedropping a Lysara-class ship which was presumably dropped at some point between then and the current worldbuilding about fighters in this setting.
Ah. Good times.

The Sojourn is a really good podcast/audio drama. The foley is fantastic, the music perfectly complements the events it backs, and all the voice acting is professional. I just finished episode 4 and I have like… minor story gripes but most of them can be hand waved away by saying “it’s sci fi, fuck off.” Basically… why is the head of this major expedition, going on away missions for weeks at a time? Why is the crew of the away mission splitting up? To which someone reading this chucks a box set of Star Trek TOS at my head.
Also I have no idea how travel works in this setting. There’s drift gates which is like… teleportation ftl. There’s the currents which are like stable smears in spacetime. Standard travel is considered really slow but also it only takes a few weeks to go visit a star system that you’re not in? You need a transfer window but you can get to the edge of the system from the star in two days? To which someone reading this chucks a box set of Firefly at my head
Whatever, at least we seem to be getting nepo baby lesbian romance.
