I did not claim it was new, I claimed it was unreliable, which is... just plain true.

Nokia 6310 (2001) could use Bluetooth because it was a phone for Professionals and hands-free phone calls are Very Important in this context.

It also provided bidirectional 8kb/s mono audio quality which while acceptable (not good, merely acceptable) for voice, is absolutely terrible for music, and was never advertised for this.

A2DP profile introduced for 2003 was the first time Bluetooth was considered for this purpose, and requires only one codec to be supported: SBC, which was designed for purposes of low computational complexity, and not quality. Additional audio codecs are up to the device to support.

Over the next 20 years Bluetooth protocol got more and more features but keep in mind that the capability of exchanging data between two Bluetooth devices is always limited to the common subset of features between the two.

3.5mm jack headsets do not need this - decoding compressed audio and digital-to-analog audio conversion happens in the phone, the mere responsibility of these is to make analog audio signal into air vibrations. With bluetooth your headsets have to be a computational device, and its limitations, combined with the limitations of the other device, will determine the audio latency, audio quality, battery life (computationally more expensive codecs means either worse battery life or requirement for increased efficiency) and how well they handle packet loss.

Which is fine if both your headphones and the other device are cutting edge.

There also come usability concerns. How long does it take for your friend to "pass the aux" versus pairing the bluetooth device?

I actually enjoy Bluetooth audio a lot. I just wish I can connect a 3.5mm jack too, when I need it, as a backup option. Having a dongle ruins this because I will be unlikely to have a dongle near me when I need it. I will continue to refuse to buy smartphones with no 3.5mm jack for as long as possible.

Furthermore whoever removed the audio jack from phones should be grilled in front of congress. The fact that I need a dongle to listen to music on a modern telephone while 20 years ago I could have simply plugged a universally standardized cord into the audio jack everyone knew how to use is an anti-human move that should be punished.

ヘッドホン・イヤホン

SONYが2006年くらいに発売したノイズキャンセリング・ウォークマンを買って以来、ずっとノイズキャンセリング機能の付いたヘッドホンやイヤホンを使用している。

オアシスがCM曲に使われていたやつで、雑踏の中ウォークマンを再生すると突如として人が消え、静寂が訪れると言った内容のCMだった。

ノイズキャンセリング機能がどういったものか知らなかったので、いまいちCMの言わんとすることが理解できなかったが、��の後家電量販店で試聴してすぐに理解できた。

その後現在までに十台くらいのノイズキャンセリング・ヘッドホン/イヤホンを使ってきたのだけれど、その中で一番最近に購入し使用していたBOSEのQuietComfort 45がとうとう壊れてしまった。

およそ2年くらい使用したもので、突然右耳からクシャクシャと紙を丸めたような音が鳴りだし、全くおさまらなくなってしまった。

この現象はひとつ前のSONY WH-1000XM4でも起きたことで(XM4はそれに加えて大音量のハウリングまで起こしていた)、内部に結露がたまった事が原因らしい。

調子の悪くなったQuietComfort 45。ほぼ毎日使用していた。

最近のノイズキャンセリングヘッドホンは密閉性が高く作られていて、時折外して熱気を逃がさないと夏場や梅雨の時期は特に結露ができやすいようだ。

10年近く前に使用していたSONYのMDR-1000X(WH-1000XM2の一つ前のやつ)というヘッドホンは、ノイズキャンセリング性能こそ今のよりは低いが、どんだけ頻繁に使用していてもそういった不具合は起きず、最終的に４，５年使用したのち耳当て近くのアームが折れて使用できなくなった。

対してWH-1000XM4はわずか一年ちょっとで上記症状が出て壊れてしまった。ノイズキャンセリング性能は今まで使用した中で一番高かったけど壊れてしまってはどうしようもない。

分解して故障原因を実際に見たわけではないので、本当のところはよくわからないけど、10年位前のノイズキャンセリングヘッドホンは本当丈夫だったように思う。どれも故障した記憶がない。

ともあれQC45は一縷の望みをかけ、乾燥剤ととも��密閉ケースに入れておくことにした。WH-1000XM4の時は全く効果がなかったけど、それよりは症状が軽そうなので少し期待が持てる。

ただ何かしら代わりになるものが必要なので色々検討して、今回ノイズキャンセリングイヤホンを新たに購入することにした。

ヘッドホンは時折くるひどい片頭痛の時に使えないし、ヘッドホンばかり使用しているとまた結露がたまるのでちょうどいい。

というわけで購入したのがBOSEのQuietComfort Earbuds(第二世代)。

QC45は2年で壊れてしまったけど、自分の使い方が悪かった部分もあったので、それは気にしないことにした。それにどれくらい使えれば妥当なのかも正直よくわからない(XM4はさすがに短かかった気もするけど)。2年くらい使えればいい方という人もいるかもしれない。

Earbudsは試聴した中でノイズキャンセリング性能が断トツによく、再生可能時間も8.5時間と長かったため、これにした。

購入したBOSEのQuietComfort Earbuds(第二世代)。

そんな感じで二日くらい気に入って使用していたのだけれど、とある問題が発生した。 このイヤホン、使用時にやたら片方(時に両方)の電源が切れる。

はじめは何が起こったのかわからなかったのだけれど、どうやらPCに集中しているときに電源が落ちるみたいで、試しに体を一切動かさずに音楽を聴いていたらちょうど十分くらいで片方の電源が落ちた。

確認のために何度か繰り返したのだけれど、動かずに使用しているとiPhone/macにつないでようがWindowsにつないでようが関係なくちょうど十分くらいでイヤホンの電源が落ちる。

自分の使用環境は主に自宅で、特に映画や動画をみた��、音楽を聴いたりする際に使用することが多いのでこれは非常に困る。10分ごとに動くことを意識しながら映画は観れない。

ネットで情報を見てみると就寝の際の使用時に電源が落ちるという、恐らく同様の症状の人がいて、交換しても効果がなかったらしく仕様ということであきらめたようだ。

とりあえずリセット・初期化などをしてみたが効果がなく、BOSEに問い合わせても「交換対応します」としか言われない。

そういった症状があることは認識しているが機器そのものの問題とはまだ捉えていないようだ。

不定期に電源が落ちるのであれば故障もあり得るが、ちょうど十分ほど動かずにいると毎回電源が落ちるので(動いていれば電源は落ちない)、イヤホンのソフトウェアの問題なんじゃないかという気が強くしてきた。

しかし考えても埒が明かず、かといって交換しても直る可能性が望み薄で、迷ったあげく新たにイヤホンを買いなおした。

BOSEは電源が落ちる症状がなければすごく気に入っていたのだけれど仕方ない。

それで買ってきたのがSONYのWF-1000XM5。

Earbudsの次くらいにノイズキャンセリング性能が良かった。また音のほうはこっちのほうが好みで、SONYに多いドンシャリといった感じではなく結構フラットに聴こえる。

また通信の品質もBOSEのより良いように思う。BOSEのものはIHコンロを使用中に近づくとかなりノイズが入ったり、PC接続時に不安になるくらいブチブチ鳴ったりした。

QC45が初めて買ったBOSE製品だったのだけれど、ヘッドホンの作りを含めて少し荒い感じだったのでここら辺は結構面を食らった。SONYの方はそういう所はちゃんとしているように思う。

ただこれはこのイヤホンに限ったことではないけど、以前のBluetoothヘッドホンには対応コーデックとしてaptXなど高音質に聴けるものが結構含まれていた気がするんだけど(気のせいかもしれないけど)、最近のイヤホンにはなかなかない。このXM5にもない。

これがないとmacやiPhone使用時はAACで伝送されそれなりの音質で聴けるんだけど、Windows10ではSBCしか使用できず結構音が悪い(Windows11ではAACに対応したようだ)。

Bluetoothイヤホンはヘッドホンのように有線では使用できないので、必然的にWindowsではSBCで使用することになる。

全然関係ないけどこれも気に入って使用しているSHUREのノイズキャンセリングヘッドホンAONIC 50(初代)。

しかしせっかく少し高めのイヤホンを買ったのにそれでは勿体ないので、Windows用にAlternative A2DP Driverというソフトウェアを購入した。

これはWindows10でAACだけに留まらずLDACなども利用できるようになる大変便利なソフトウェアだ。

早速購入したのだけれど無事AACで使用することができた。そのうえ驚くべきことに44.1kHzと48kHzも選べるようになっている。

44.1kHzより48kHzのほうが明らかに高音部分がより聴こえるようになっていて、(仕組みが違うので単純に比較はできないけど)個人的にはDSEEオンの時よりも効果を感じる。

ほかのBluetoothヘッドホンにもコーデックが対応さえしていれば適応されるので、非常にいい。

という感じでいろいろ紆余曲折があったけど無事満足のいくものを手に入れることができた。QC45の方も何日間か密閉ケースに入れていたら少し症状がよくなってきたのでうまくいけば直るかもしれない。

最近は音楽を聴くときはほとんどヘッドホンかイヤホンを使用しているので長持ちしてくれるといいな。
