mmm stuck gambit writing
Remy hears the rustle of papers and he tilts his head a little.
“Scott?”
“Im still here. Sorry, I took my hand back, needed in to hold these papers.”
“Papers mon ami?”
“Yeah, Ive got some papers to grade.”
Remy scrunches his nose.
“You're like eighteen?! You be grading?”
“Nineteen. And I run one of the classes here.”
“How you got your tutor license already?”
“I … don't have that.”
“Don't you have to have a license to teach?”
"Well, yeah but... not a lot of people are willing to teach mutants. And I can handle the work."
Remy frowns.
"Mais... are you happy doin' it?"
"Someone has to teach them how to write argumentative essays and how to read and process information."
Scott says and the papers reshuffle. The older teen gives a little sigh. Remy scootches to the side and pats the matresss.
"Come, sit, and tell me your woes. Remy wont tell no body."
Scott is silent for a moment and then is sitting beside Remy, their shoulders touching.
"its not that I dont like teaching them."
Scott says and Remy tilts his head a little to show that he is listening.
Scott sighs a little.
"I just wish we could get people who knew how to teach to teach them. I know how to write a paragraph, but that doesn't mean I know how to explain it to others."
Remy hums.
"and are they writing poorly?"
Scott hesitates and then whines.
"Really poorly."
Remy laughs at the childish tone and gently bumps shoulders with Scott.
"Well is there any common mistakes? Mon papa always looked for common mistakes when training people. Maybe build a lesson offa that."
Scott makes a small noise.
"But how do I explain to them whats wrong if I cant explain it to you?"
"Maybe they need more structural help? Like how you have to use scaffolding in building a building."
Scott hums a little. Remy clicks his tongue. Has no one tried to help this teen out?
"My braille books that Creed bought had tutorials in the beginning and more complex stuff as it went on. I bet there are text books out there that could help with basic structure. Mon Tante swore by the Latin text book she raised us on. Mais she also swore books were of Tartarus when it came to cookin’. Too much jawing and not enough stirrin', shed say."
Remy chitters on.
"Seems youve had a colorful education."
Remy shrugs.
"Homeschool does that."
Remy rests his head on Scott's shoulder.
"Read them to me and Ill help you lesson plan mon ami."
"I- youd help? What do you know about lesson planning?"
The question is genuine and Scott sounds semi relieved. Remy snorts.
"Sounds like Remy got just as much education on that as you."
"... Fair."

Hi you’re very kind in always answering people with their art questions i appreciate you so much!! I wanted to ask if u have any books/videos that helped you on your art journey? Love your art so much ur an inspiration 😘😘
hi!! this is so nice of you to say and you’re very welcome 🥰 - books and videos under the cut!
videos
what helped me a lot when i started with art is to watch time lapses or draw-with-me sessions so i can kind of copy how artists draw or paint. however it’s "Level Up your Portrait Drawings" by Chris Hong (ETA: sorry the link doesn't seem to be working, so i've included the title of the class) that was like a turning point in how i drew faces. it’s available via membership on skillshare but i think you can sign up for a month free. i can’t recommend it enough! the quality of my portraits changed after this especially with regards to anchor points—i learned how to tweak my art with this video and i do feel it carried over and improved the way i drew very visibly <3
another video i feel created a huge improvement in my drawing is this class by Lexin Yuan (qrbits). this is a lot more rigorous and thorough than the previous one and also included feedback from the artist (!!) and it’s available via subscription to Class101 but lexin has since made a free version on their youtube which i HIGHLY recommend as well (actually i would recommend their entire channel) - from here i learned how to make characters stand and pose properly, i learned to draw from dance videos, i learned about boxes and anatomy in a very approachable way.
another artist i’m subscribed to and whom i enjoy watching draw is likelihoodart. i love looking at their art bc i feel like they have the perfect blend of semi-realism and stylization - plus their OCs are amazing (the general art rule for teeth is don’t fill them out, but i’ve never seen anyone draw teeth a good as them! i mean look at this work in particular). i picked up some rendering styles and tips from watching their draw-with-me videos.
i’m also currently subscribed to Loish’s patreon where she has very useful and in-depth tutorials and guides. she explains it so well and i also see a lot of the artists in their patreon community sharing their improvements and it's SO cool and encouraging. she has accessible tutorials here you can check out :)
books
comic books/graphic novels - i think i mentioned before but when i first started drawing (again, after living artless as a corporate cog), i was in my marvel (mcu//stucky) phase and one of my fav comics back then was matt fraction’s hawkeye. i liked david aja’s style and i would copy entire panels from the comic in ink into my sketchbook. so i would recommend copying whatever art style comic or manga or graphic novel you like into your sketchbook as personal practice (not for public sharing). re-draw your favorite panels! copying directly from the source also helps you figure out how the artist might have drawn their works.
figure drawing by michael hampton - if i were to recommend just one figure drawing/anatomy book to you, it would be this one - this is also a direct recommendation by lexin yuan and i found this book to be easy to follow and the concepts are understandable. i am at heart more of a gesture drawing artist so his emphasis on line of action and dynamism is something i really appreciated.
ART BOOKS! in particular: spider-verse 1 and 2 art books - everyone knows these and for good reason; ami thompson's character expression sheets alone are worth the price. seeing concept art is always very special--you get to read how a team of creatives come up with ideas and you can learn how to incorporate them into your own art. these two are currently my favorite art books, but i also like the art of tangled (glen keane's sketches are in the inside of the covers and that alone made me want to weep they're so beautiful). and sometimes i go into the japanese section of my local bookstore and see what art books they have - i got this one last year which i really enjoyed, and i got a copy of ryoko kui's doodle book for dungeon meshi and i just love it SO much. their character designs are varied and top-notch and it's just so FUN to go through (if you're interested in this, they'll be releasing an english version soon!)
i also draw a lot of inspiration from artists who make and sell zines of their own art or sketches or sketchbooks - some of them even offer it for free! it seems to be a lost art nowadays because people think zines have to be like big collaborative productions, but it can just be a pdf of your sketches. i literally have a page from one of my fav artist's digital zines printed and taped in front of my desk for constant inspiration, and it's just a sketch of theirs. there's nothing quite like seeing an artist's work in zine format <3
my gawd sorry that was so long BUT i hope these are helpful to you in any way!! <3

OC: Asami
I posted this here before but deleted it for some reason I can't remember, but here's one of my OCs. All of my friends say that she acts and looks like a dommy mommy but in reality, she's a huge girlfailure
Name: Asami
Nickname: She can be called Asa, Mimi, Sami, or Ami, but special people can call her “Salami”, “Pastrami” or “Nori”
Age: 23
Eye color: Red
Hair color: Silvery Blonde
Pronouns: She/Her
Sexual and Romantic orientation: Graysexual Demiromantic
Relationships: Asami is in a polyamorous relationship with both RD and Ruolan
(snz stuff)
✦ Asami has a pollen intolerance.
✦ She hides, holds back or stifles her sneezes because she thinks it's one of her many glitches.
✦ RD and Ruolan scold her for stifling or holding back because in all honesty, it just makes her sneeze more.
✦ Speaking of glitches, one of her glitches is her faulty battery. It could appear to be at a high percentage, but she'd end up suddenly shutting down at a random place.
✦ Her sneezes, as described by Ruolan are high pitched" and "girly"
✦ Her sneezes end in "-iew!" sounds (example: hiH'schIEW!!)
✦ Since she sees most patrons in the library do it, it's always been a habit of hers to cover whenever she sneezes.
✦ She always brings around a handkerchief to sneeze into. She prefers them anyways since they feel much softer than tissues.
She was out of comission for quite some time, but was rescued by a girl named Ruolan and a fellow bot named RD when they accidentally discovered her despite their initial plan to practice their craft by spray painting the walls. Because of looters, she had to be brought into parts-and-services to get replacements for the parts she was missing.
(Backstory)
Asami was a prototype made by a company named Obscura. She was originally designed to be a robomaid for those of the elite class, having no purpose other than to just be shown off, pick up after, and fetch items for their master. However, due to her disposition, she was scrapped and abandoned after the scientists deemed her to be a failure.
After getting back up on her feet again, Asami found a job at a local library and assists the sweet old woman there with returning books to their shelves, helping people find books, cataloguing the library's resources, and brewing tea for the old lady
(Appearance)
Asami is a robot that stands at 5 feet and 4 inches. She has a pale complexion but enhances it with red-colored cosmetics. Most notably overly dramatic eye-shadow that reaches up and spreads towards her temples. She also has a little heart shaped mole on her right breast.
However, Asami also has an insecure side to her, herself, believing that her worth is based on how much people like her. She also believes that her mismatched and "scary" appearance is unsightly and gets reasonably upset and refuses to talk when someone points out a flaw or makes fun of her. When it comes to relationships, Asami instantly latches onto the first person to treat her nicely, hence why she is very protective of Ruolan and RD. She doesn't have too much friends either, so she gets upset if the two blow off her invitations to go out, giving into jealousy and paranoiac thoughts easily.
(Personality)
Since she lacks friends and is unwilling to go to places outside of Ruolan's apartment and the library she works at, she's socially inept and comes across as someone who is uptight, cold, and aloof. She also retains her original quick-tempered personality from her creation and is rather opinionated, unable to hold her tongue when someone makes rude or lewd remarks towards her or her loved ones.
When it comes to her likes, Asami is very much into fashion and make up, often spending her free time watching tutorials and practicing on either herself or Ruolan. She also likes to recreate outfits she sees online by looking for and purchasing clothing with similar styles and colors at the thrift store. Due to her love of this stuff, RD has dubbed her the "fashionista" of the their group.
In terms of dislikes, she doesn't like crowds, tight spaces, rain, loud sounds, and the goose in the park that keeps trying to bite her or steal her leg.

CLOSEUP ON THE FRONT AND BACK

HAIRSTYLES (She usually wears her hair down, but ties it up into a ponytail or bun if she really wants to)
Tumblr media
BATTERY (Blue means "optimal" (100%-60%), yellow means "satisfactory" (59% to 16%) and red means "low battery" (15% and lower)

FMP: Updated Learning Agreement. LO3.
Easter Week 2
Synopsis:
My focus for this study is on rebranding and reimagining Flamingo Park in Hastings, UK. Flamingo Park currently faces challenges in attracting visitors and maintaining its appeal, as evidenced by the low-ratings online. By applying my illustration and design, I aim to revitalise the park's identity and enhance its visitor experience. Through this project, I aim to contribute to the preservation of the park's cultural significance in relevance to Hastings historic context. Points of research include the history of Hastings, brand identities of other amusement parks and their outputs for successful advertising.
My specialisation in illustration will aid in championing the traditional craftsmanship that appears throughout Hastings, notably, the signwriting. Drawing inspiration from artists like Joseph Avery, the man behind the marketing of Giffords Circus, I aim to explore analogue and digital techniques. I feel this will create a standout portfolio piece from the rest of my highly digitised work.
Rebranding Flamingo Park present an exciting opportunity to enhance my skills in illustration and to make a positive impact on a real location. I aim to contribute to the long-term sustainability and relevance of Flamingo Park in Hastings and intend of communicating with Hastings Council after the project has finalised.
Ethical Considerations:
As children are the target audience for Flamingo Park, there may be incidences where I collect feedback from this audience. AUB ethics code 4.7.4: Parents are required to give consent for any research involving children under 18

Pancakes Household: Chapter 8, Part 4
In this part the eldest Pancake begins high school, unfortunately on career day. Then it's a trip to the dog part, despite the rain, because Bob needs to drum up customers!
Tumblr media
Bob: Your mother said you wanted to chat, is everything okay?
Iggy: Yeah dad. It’s just..
Bob: You’re not just a boy?
Iggy: Wait what? How did you know
Bob: The make up was a clue. How did you do that eyeliner? The lashes are superb
Iggy: Thanks dad, youtube had tutorials. So today I’m feeling pretty non-binary, but that will change, and change again. It’s called being genderfluid, today I fit they/them pronouns
Bob: I’m glad you wanted to share who you are with me. Give your old dad a hug. Best of luck with your first day, I’m proud of you no matter what, got it?
Iggy: Got it. Thanks dad, I love you
Tumblr media
First day of High School! Iggy sets out to find where on earth the principal is. Turns out he’s in the computer science class talking with the class 2 teacher.
Iggy: Hi, are you Mr Amarinth?
Mr A: Yes I am, how can I help you?
Iggy: Well it’s my first day and I’m not really sure what I should be doing
Mr A: Ah, you’re Mr Pancakes. Well, first up check for a locker, claim the one you want
Iggy: I’m not exactly-
Mr A: Then go find your teacher, she’s around here somewhere. It’s her job to let you know what is going on
Iggy: Okay but if we could swing back to-
Mr A: Now Mr Pancakes I do not have time to talk all day, important principal stuff
Iggy: *sighs* sure sir
Tumblr media
Iggy went off to search the halls feeling somewhat deflated. They know that when their parents enrolled them they had put male student. Their parents hadn’t known then so Iggy couldn’t blame them. And judging from Mr A’s tone, he was not interested in getting to know the student body. They could only hope that their class teacher would be more understanding.
Tumblr media
Iggy finally finds the person they’re looking for in the actual computer lab. Mustering their high confidence back together, they go over to introduce themselves.
Iggy: Hello, I think I’m your new student
Mrs Tinker: Oh, hello. Nice to meet you. I was told I was getting a new student but Mr Amarinth didn’t elaborate beyond that
Iggy: Oh, well… My name, at least for now, is Iggy. And Mr A didn’t have time to listen but I do prefer they/them pronouns
Mrs T: No problem. Let me know if anything changes and I’ll do my best to keep up
Iggy feels some relief at this. At least some adult at this school seems supportive.
Tumblr media
Mrs T: Come on, come on, we’re already late starting
Amie: Sorry miss
Mrs T: Social studies. What is social studies really but the science of people?
Iggy does their best write notes and listen but they’re really trying to think up a new name. One that will fit them better, no matter which gender they feel like on any particular day. Their mind goes through all the books they read as a kid, wondering if any of them had suitable names. How did parents decide what their kids should be called anyway?
Tumblr media
Iggy: What options do we have? Any Monte Cristo in stock?
Naveah: This isn’t the Ritz kid. We have slider options and tray options
Iggy: Then I’ll have some veggie sliders please…
Naveah: Oh I’m Naveah
Iggy: What a cool name! Maybe I should go with a colour
Iggy moves to a table and ponders this where Amie finds them.
Amie: Hey Ig, you ready
Iggy: Ready for what
Amie: It’s career day
Iggy: But we’re only 13, what can we possibly know about careers
Amie: That’s why we have it I guess
Tumblr media
Career day and Iggy sped through the career check ins to make sure the teacher would stay off their back. Not that Mrs Tinker seemed like she would be harsh but Iggy was certainly not ready to start imagining adult life, they’d only just become a teenager after all.
Tumblr media
After Iggy had checked in Mrs Tinker they drifted over to the arcade game where they were soon joined by friends Darwin and William.
William: Yo Igs, you found something cool?
Iggy: I guess, hard to find anything in all this clutter
Darwin: It’s to “inspire our young minds”
The three teens burst into laughter as Darwin’s impersonation and try their best to figure out how to work such archaic technology.
William: You thought of a new name yet
Darwin: I still vote Chaos the Destroyer
Tumblr media
William: Dude, no. We're not characters in a video game
Iggy: Did you know our cafeteria lady is called Naveah? That’s cool right
Darwin: So you gonna steal her name
Iggy: No but it’s got me thinking about non traditional names. I can’t do standard gender neutral names because the save already has a Kelly, Charlie, Devin, Alex
William: Just don’t go calling yourself something like apple
Darwin: Oh, how about peach? If you’re thinking colours
William: Dude you are not serious
Iggy: Pretty sure I want something that’s not going to make me sound like a stripper
Darwin: Oh… yeah I hear that now
Tumblr media
William: I mean, you read a shoot ton of books, there must be something in there that sounds cool
Iggy: Good point!
Darwin: How about Katniss
William: Pretty sure the idea is to sound less gendered
Darwin: and your cis self knows about that do you
William: It’s called being helpful dude, try it some time
William walks off despite Darwin insisting he is being helpful actually.
Darwin: Whatever you pick Pancakes, we’ll use. Flick us a text when you figure it out
Iggy: Thanks, you’ve given me stuff to think about. I think I have a top three now
Darwin: Sweet. Next time you see William tell him I am actually helpful
Tumblr media
After school Bob and Iggy head to the park. Bob wants to see if a bake sale at a community lot will result in more customers so Iggy is here to keep Ginger occupied.
Bob: Are you going to be okay here
Iggy: Dad, I’m not 5, I’ll be fine
Bob: If anyone looks at you funny send them to me, I’ll slip an extra something into their fudge slice
Bob sets up but with the rain his gloomy self is not optimistic about the turn out. After filling an empty bowl for Ginger, Iggy sits down to do their homework. Fergus is off at drama club but there’s no cheer practice today.
Tumblr media
Ginger is happily snacking away when I notice Clover is here watching. A quick scan about the park shows that Kaori has brought her. Despite the rain Bob has a line at his stall before too long. It’s the best way to move the baking that he has had to do to level his skill, if sims buy.
Tumblr media
Iggy: Okay Ginger, that’s my homework all done. Time to practice some cheer
Ginger: *yaps* Umm what about me
Iggy: Do you want to play huh? I suppose this is technically the dog park
Ginger: *yaps* damn right it is
Tumblr media
Ginger: *yaps* tell me your problems human, I’m smart, I shall solve
Iggy: Well I had a bunch of name ideas, how do parents pick names? There’s so many
Ginger: *yaps* beats me
Iggy: But I think I’ve found one that… well I’m kind of in love with, so that’s a good thing right
Ginger: *yaps* indeed, tell me your new identity
Onyx: I’m Onyx *laughs* yeah, I’m Onyx
Ginger yaps her approval and after a snuggle Onyx begins trying to teach her how to fetch.
Tumblr media
Bob manages to get a steady stream of sims throughout the afternoon despite the downpour. When Fergus arrives from drama cub he eagerly dives into the playground, despite things being slippery. For the most part Onyx and Ginger manage to stay under cover but for some of the longer throws they have to brave the rain. With Eliza’s shift almost done the family pack up and head home.
Tumblr media
Eliza: How was the first day of high school then?
Onyx: Mixed bag. The principal was quite busy but my classroom teacher, Mrs Tinker, seems nice. She agreed to use my pronouns
Eliza: As she should
Onyx: But we only got one class then it was career day
Bob: Oh I’ve done a few of those
Onyx: I wish you had been there today dad, the speakers were so boring. I didn’t want to do any of the options
Eliza: You’re still young, you’ve got all the time in the world to figure it out
Tumblr media
Onyx: I have figured out something though. A name that sounds more… me
Bob: What is it?
Onyx: I was thinking… Onyx. Although I won’t mind Nyx for short
Eliza: Onyx… I like it
Bob: Definitely better than a name I could come up with. You know when you were born I wanted to call you-
But luckily Bob sees Eliza shaking her head and stops that sentence before he spills the beans.
Fergus: You should have picked a cuss word, it would have been hilarious
Eliza: Fergus, Onyx doesn’t need a hilarious name. They want a name that suits them
Tumblr media
Fergus: But imagine the prank possibilities!
Onyx: Aren’t you meant to be proper
Fergus: Sometimes
Onyx: Look I just wanted to say, to all of you really, thank you for accepting who I am
Bob: Kid, we love you. That’s what family does
Onyx: Not all family. I know how lucky I am to have you, that’s all
Tumblr media
That night Eliza tries shooing Ginger before she and Bob woohoo but Ginger is feeling clingy and refuses to leave the room. Pets.
Fergus: Hey Onyx, I was wondering…
Onyx: Is this a real question or a nonsense question
Fergus: Well now I want to ask two questions
Onyx: Fine, go ahead
Fergus: Can I have your old bike AND what do sheep wear to the beach?
Onyx: Sure and I don’t know, what do they wear
Fergus:  A BAAkini, get it
Onyx: Yeah I’m not using that in my future comedy sets
Tumblr media
Eliza: Morning kids
Fergus: Hey Mother, can I have some help
Eliza: What with
Fergus: Well some kid in my class was giving out birthday gifts. As in, it was their birthday so they got each of us a gift
Eliza: Hold on Fergus, your dad and I do not have the money to do that
Fergus: I’m not asking you to. Anyway mine sucks. What do I do? Try to enjoy it? Give it back?
Eliza: Tell you what, you give it to me and I’ll return it to the store. Then you can get something else
Fergus: Genius

I learned to crochet Pokémon amis (actually everything else about crochet too) from plaintext patterns, and once I got a feel for it I made my own patterns. Thinking back (if I logged into my defunct Etsy shop I could just find out the stats but whateverrrrr) I really only sold each amigurumi pattern once or twice, for $5 each time. I think I had about 10 or a dozen patterns available. And that was over the course of the 2 years I had the shop open! An annual income boost of like $60, max! For a plaintext word doc converted to a PDF download, that’s sort of…fine…since typing up my own patterns also made it easier for me to read whenever I crocheted a Pokémon again to fulfill an order. But still.
The effort and detail expected from pattern writers right now. Ohhhhh my god. And you say people complain about free patterns too? Damn. Honestly I don’t know why I’d have to provide a set of progress photos for how to attach Oddish’s leaves to the top of its head. Figure it out idk, you only paid me five buckaroos and you only gave me that money at all because you thought the price of my completed handmade Pokémon toys was too high……
Because that’s what buying a cheap crochet pattern is. You’re looking to make your own item at cost of materials so you don’t have to pay the much higher price for a completed work. Okayyyy so you want my time (where I created and wrote down the pattern) but you don’t want to pay full price? Or even $15 for the pattern instead of $5? Come onnnnnnnn. Of course this paragraph mostly applies to me since I was selling all my patterns previously and I’m thinking about doing it again. Some artists sell prints of their artwork but that’s not everyone. Some artists also publish tutorial books or conduct classes but that’s not everyone.
In your case, you’ve gotten replies and comments and reblogs and asks and messages for a pattern the instant you post completed photos. Ummmm excuse me can you just look at this cool thing please? For a few seconds? Without demanding a way to copy the original work? Stand for a second and look at the colors and techniques and stitches. Enjoy the moment.
And maybe get inspired to make your own, on your own.
I really understand your take on sharing amigurumi patterns. I crocheted A LOT about 10 years ago, I crocheted Pokémon plushes, wrote the patterns, and sold both for a bit. But the patterns were just a PDF with plain text telling the reader the stitches for each round with a quick note partway through each piece to advise them when to start stuffing. Free patterns on like Ravelry from 2005-2015 are also like this, it’s my normal. Fast forward to last year. For the first time, I buy a pattern on Etsy. It’s FULL of photos and diagrams and custom fonts and intricate page borders and decorative doodles and excruciating detail, none of which I need. So now like, hooooly shit, if I ever start selling patterns again, do I have to get professional photography setup and a graphic designer??? To make 5 freakin bucks???????? My patterns might just have to remain a trade secret. 😬
Yeah I definitely feel like expectations for patterns have just risen unrealistically. I only freehand so I don't buy patterns or even look at them, but whenever I see people talking about them, there's always so much- neediness? about them. People will complain about FREE patterns if they don't have pictures or explain how to attach things or is formatted differently from what they're used to. FREE PATTERNS. The entitlement and lack of appreciation is just so jarring to me. And then the same group of people will act like they are so generous for throwing a dollar your way for such a pattern, maybe $3 if it just looks nice, maybe even $5 if they like you. Very often you'll see PACKS of patterns, sets of 3 or 5 or 10 or 12, each with, like you said, photos and diagrams and excruciating detail, and that's the only time people will think it's justified to pay up to $10 on them. It makes no sense to me. Personally all I need, and the way I write my patterns is mostly like this Fomantis one I put out years ago with basically just the colors needed, and the actual stitches needed in each row for each part. That's it.
And then when people would tell me they'd gladly pay for my patterns however they were formatted just because they liked the crochet- that is simply not true by and large. Most of the people saying that kind of stuff did not subscribe to my patreon when I had it, and I just made myself miserable putting out slightly more refined versions of my pattern notes. I don't like to think of it as keeping my patterns as a trade secret like you said, but it kind of feels that way sometimes because I just do not want to put any kind of effort into typing up a pattern that people won't even use and will only complain about.
I would want minimum $50 for typing up just one set of notes as is because it took me more than 5hr to crochet the thing and it'd take another hour to type up the rows and I hate it and people just are not here for that, not hearing it at all. "Well it's only for one Pokemon? You already have the notes written can't you just snap a pic and share those? [Some bullshit about potential passive income so the price should be pennies]." You cannot give give an inch or they will demand a mile. So no patterns of any kind at all ever for any reason.

you’re one of my favourite artists and one of the reasons I want to start drawing!!! >.< I’ve started and it’s a bit difficult but fun!!
I was wondering if you had any tips on how to draw face shapes and dynamic poses? I love the way you draw face shapes and the actual expressions!!! (it’s always so hard for me 😭) and your poses are super cute!!!
YAAYY NEW ARTIST🥳!! i’m SO happy to hear this -
and absolutely i’d love to share what i’ve come to learn (so far!) re: face shapes and poses as a hobby artist ^^
just to preface everything, when it comes to giving art advice there’s always a general disclaimer that there’s no right way to do art, in the end you should do what you like to do! sometimes i like to think of art as problem-solving, and there are many ways to tackle specific problems <3
for face shapes and expressions - lately i love to reference and do studies of Ami Thompson and Shiyoon Kim’s character design and expression sheets for Spiderverse. these are INCREDIBLY evocative and useful. you can study these expressions and poses and try to recreate them on different characters, and you’ll notice the difference in eye shapes, face shapes, noses, etc; studying these differences is what will help us avoid same face syndrome. what i generally like to do is find art that i like - comic/manga panels, fan art, anything i want to learn how to draw like - and copy it into my sketchbook for personal practice and study to see what elements i can incorporate into my own drawing.
another tip - any medium is good for drawing, but i highly suggest esp when you’re starting - learn to draw with ink! drawing traditionally and with something unerasable will help with your draftsmanship and line confidence. it’ll be wonky at first but you learn to be deliberate with every stroke. tbh becoming a digital artist has deteriorated my draftsmanship and has made me heavy-handed, and it’s something i’m trying to consciously remedy right now. digital art is highly convenient and best for sharing, but when i do studies i stick to pen and paper :)
as for poses - one v important thing i learned in creating dynamic art is to “push” or exaggerate the poses. what you see in a photo reference - if you try to draw that 1:1 on paper, it doesn’t always translate well—the energy is not always captured, and it usually looks so stiff. what is in 3D has to be translated a different way to 2D. so “push” it to create more energy - exaggerate the movements - even if they’re just standing, you can make it dynamic by being conscious of how they’re standing (where the weight is balanced, push one hip up, make them lean one direction, for example). i doodled some examples here:
Tumblr media
^ first one is gojo just standing; now how i would “push” this pose is to show him putting more of his weight on one hip and maybe putting his opposite foot up a bit to suggest some movement (and balance). the third one is just a bit more variation where his body is still putting weight more on one side, his feet are more glued to the ground, but i put his hand out to do his signature victory sign just for a bit of flair. so it’s a lot of figuring out how to convey balance and weight and movement and personality :) start with exaggerating the pose - then you can create more and more dynamic art from there ^^
pushing and exaggerating applies to facial expressions, too! instead of merely drawing someone with a smile, try tilting their head a little sideways (and show how their hair might move as well bc of this), add some blush, raise their shoulders a bit, etc).
and i 100% recommend taking gesture drawing classes for dynamic poses ^^ there are a lot of artists who have draw-with-me tutorials on youtube, and i personally like to use line-of-action.com for timed sessions.
i hope this is helpful in even a little way—good luck on your drawing journey and remember to trust the process bc progress is def not linear as an artist but deliberate practice and studies WILL help you! <3

AMY'S TROPICAL TREASURES
AMY’S TROPICAL TREASURES
To join Amy’s Facebook group and be on top of future online classes, click here. This is the 8th online lesson I took from Amy… time flies when we are having so much fun, right? This lesson was medium to advanced, and as is often the case with Amy’s designs, lots of different techniques were involved, often several in a single cookie. There were three videos before the online event to make sure…

Les aventures d'Adenophora Morpho #1
1ére Session
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Week 9 - Prototyping
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week’s lecture focused on prototyping and the different methods and types there are and when to use them.
Prototypes allow designers to communicate in high-fidelity and have users test and give feedback on the model. This is beneficial for the designer as they can adapt to the feedback make changes to their design. After watching the Andrew Simpson cup case study, it came to my realization that creating physical prototypes gives the designer qualitative data that would be considered an “unknown” if no testing was conducted. Therefore, created physical prototypes of the moisturizer bottle is an essential phase of the design process to observe how the user interacts with the product, how easily the moisturizer comes out of the bottle, whether it can stand on its own etc.
The main types of prototyping that were discussed in the lecture were Rapid, Digital and Smart. Rapid prototyping is much quicker compared to traditional manufacturing techniques. Sub-categories of rapid prototyping are additive, subtractive, and compressive. One limitation rapid prototyping has is the range of materials available to test with. If you are looking for a cheaper method of prototyping, digital prototyping would be a suitable alternative. It also allows the designer to see how the product would react to different conditions (i.e.: weather, stress, tension).
As for the tutorial, we continued working on 3ds Max and were tasked to create our chose moisturizer bottle design(s). Having completed last week’s task and the pre-class activities, I was feeling quite confident going into using 3ds Max. Of course, there were a few times when I got confused and sat there staring at my screen trying to click random icons to make the object do what I wanted it to. After minutes of endless clicking, I sought out the help from a friend (thanks Amy!) who was able to tell me which tool to use to get my desired shape.
After that, I was able to create a few different models, both previously designed ones and brand-new ones! Once I got the hang of the software, it was hard to stop. I kept discovering different new modifiers and other tools that manipulated the bottle’s body in such fascinating ways! My favourites were the taper, chamfer, squeeze and swift loop.
Next time, I want to try rendering the models to see what type of finish/finishes I can get. I couldn’t this week as I only had my laptop and 3ds Max would crash every time I tried to render.
