*sigh* thoughts on Nintendo's botw/totk timeline shenanigans and tomfoolery?

tbh. my maybe-unpopular opinion is that the timeline is only important when a game's place on the timeline seriously informs the way their narrative progresses. the problem is that before botw we almost NEVER got games where it didn't matter. it matters for skyward sword because it's the beginning, and it matters for tp/ww/alttp (and their respective sequels) because the choices the hero of time makes explicitly inform the narrative of those games in one way or another. it matters which timeline we're in for those games because these cycles we're seeing are close enough to oot's cycle that they're still feeling the effects of his choices. botw, however, takes place at minimum 10 thousand years after oot, so its place on the timeline actually functionally means nothing. botw is completely divorced from the hero of time & his story, so what he does is a nonissue in the context of botw link and zelda's story. thus, which timeline botw happens in is a nonissue. honestly I kind of liked the idea that it happened in all of them. i think there's a cool idea of inevitability that can be played with there. but the point is that the timeline exists to enhance and fill in the lore of games that need it, and botw/totk don't really need it because the devs finally realized they could make a game without the hero of time in it.

he's probably used to gore and gritty stuff like that since he sees it often being a jujutsu sorcerer and all. not to mention his technique is literally blood. maybe he's desensitized to gore films, the most you'll get from him is a disgusted scowl.

BUT DID YOU SEE HOW QUICK HIS EYE OPENED WHEN HANAMI SHOWED UP BEHIND HIM. YOURE SO FUCKING FR ABT JUMPSCARES. Noritoshi is that guy who wouldn't scream or yelp but gasp really loudly and jump out of his skin.

i feel like they get him most in horror because of the music building up anticipation. if its one of those fake outs where the jumpscare comes a bit after, he's fucked UP. It makes him instantly miffed, as he tries to regain his composure. He swears he's not usually like this, it got him by surprise is all..!

Noritoshi is the type that'd only watch a horror movie if the story is rich and complex. He's the type of guy to like open endings that make you think.. if it's a guilty pleasure movie where all the protags make stupid decisions, he gets annoyed right off the bat.

He's groaning and complaining about how imbecile the characters are, but would still watch it with you because you personally invited him. If he's lucky you could fall asleep on his shoulder or [insert movie cliche here] how could he pass that up? But Noritoshi wouldn't be able to focus on you if he gets twice as annoyed because its a bad movie + jumpscares. it still startles him, but the movie is so terrible, he's embarrassed it got him, especially in front of you!!!

if you get involved and you tell him to quiet down, Noritoshi would shift his focus towards you. like that awkward guy who thinks he's being smooth and lowkey about how he cuddles up next to you. He wants to be the tough guy who's shoulder you can hide in, and he is!! just not.. with jumpscares.......

i know this moment is early on, but i would place this among the most unhinged exchanges between these two in the entire story. di feisheng has so clearly come to define their relationship by the donghai conflict, has defined li xiangyi by the rage in his eyes when they finally fought each other. but his expression, even with the mask, is happier beyond what a mere jab at li lianhua would instill in him— he's genuinely swept up and reveling in the fact that, to him, li xiangyi is alive. even though he's now gotten it so wrong with a warped image of the man in his mind.

and this dialogue, twistedly rejoicing, is also heartbreaking with the knowledge of li lianhua's fate. given that di feisheng only now points out that he thinks li xiangyi stands before him, it means he didn't fully believe it before. he saw li lianhua as still somewhat separate from li xiangyi, different selves from different eras, from the time they noticed each other on the yipin mission up to this moment. and maybe if li lianhua's anger hadn't brought the past back to him, di feisheng would have remained closer to the truth: li xiangyi is gone, he left years ago, and li lianhua is just someone with his face.

the way this all unfolds, though, di feisheng winds up clinging onto whatever reflection of li xiangyi he can see in li lianhua, for whichever reason you assign to him (i don't think he himself knows why at this time). and he refuses to give up or let go of that, to the point that in the end, li lianhua's last act in li xiangyi's name is to force di feisheng to. this little, bitter moment of conflict potentially influenced so much down the line for these two. i guess we'll never know what might have happened otherwise.

does anyone ever get overrun by guilt that by witnessing the power and love of dan and phil youre ruining their chance to just have that for themselves in the most authentic way in private. and then youre like well wait theyre major attention whores they wanted/continue to want this so it's probably fine. and also theyre absolute masters at setting down the line between dan and phil and Dan and Phil TM. but then sometimes they say/do things that really make you feel the guilt again like it's just toooo close inside like hmmm maybe they will never know peace or what could have been because of me.... too bad im addicted to their yaoi
