teach me your ways on how to color whitewash idols. it’s so pretty

hiii omg thank u !! i will say i make new coloring for every set + recommend that so ur coloring is unique to the lighting, idol, etc.! i only mask over the original at the end of coloring (otherwise it can trick your eye into thinking something is off), and i ask people for help making sure i didn't oversaturate sometimes. i'll color a yeri set from the same file as those irene gifs earlier to show my process :)

sharpen! my sharpening whitens highlights most times, so i try to color over it so i know it won't become overexposed when i go to export. base gif (sharpened in vs) versus sharpened fully.

2. gauge how pale they are compared to naturally light photos w/ minimal to no editing / general 'what is too pale'. she isn't very pale here so not too much needs changing.

first adjustment layer: levels, set the blacks using the eyedropper. helps with contrast and overall look.

second: curves, adding back highlights and depth (especially around nose and cheekbones, which tend to get removed when it is washed out).

exposure! make sure to adjust gamma as well, don't go too far. this is the no. 1 cause of overly white gifs with otherwise nice coloring.

next is brightness and contrast, which same rule of thumb as exposure. don't over-do it.

hue/sat: fix yellow or red leaning skin, and then i add saturation and darken skin channels to add life and warmth without making it too overdone (if you just saturate, it can look cartoonish imo)

selective color (#1): adjust reds, yellows, blacks, and whites. sometimes change neutrals (add magenta and yellow while lightening them overall) on very stubborn originals.

selective color (#2): fine-tune previous adjustments to look natural. ADD WHITE BACK TO HIGHLIGHTS! this helps with the glowiness

it can be done at this point, but i did one more fine-tuning hue/saturation (when i adjust other colors like blues to be the shade i want too). this is also when i use color balance or a second brightness/contrast to get my end result where i want!

i also like to color with the previous / done gif next to the new one to make sure they match :) like so - i copy and paste the coloring group and then adjust it (and sharpening!) as needed for cohesion

Hi! Do you happen to have basic/simple/easy tutorials for editing comic panels to recommend?

i do not actually have one to refer you to, but i’m happy to write some things up! i’m assuming this is just for removing backgrounds and creating icons; if you want a how-to on the way i animate panels, that lives here.

i use photoshop cs6, but the same general principles should work in other editors. also, there are probably easier or faster ways to do the things i do. i like my methods and i’m comfortable with them, but i’d recommend experimenting to find what works best for you.

and... yeah! let's get into it.

step one: finding a panel

i save panels as i’m reading comics. they all live in one PSD file named “panels,” and i make a new one for each run. anything that seems pretty or thematically resonant gets copied and pasted in there. this way, i don’t have to dig through endless comic issues to find a specific image that stuck with me. i usually save the full page just so the edges are clean and everything is included.

let’s go with this page from birds of prey:

step two: cropping

the way i crop the image depends on two things: what i’m hoping to make, and what the image looks like. here, i’m just doing a basic portrait, and helena is taller than she is wide. that makes it easy; let’s crop it so she takes up most of the frame.

(my preferred ratios are 4x6 for smaller panel edits like this; for banners, i usually do 2x1, but if the framing works better as 3x2, I have done that, too. just feel it out. actual pixel sizes depend on the size of the original image.)

step three: removing the background

this part is, I think, the area with the most room for personal preference. we need to erase the background, and there are a LOT of tools to do this. each one varies depending on what the image itself looks like. there’s the magic selection tool, the eraser, or the lasso or magnetic selection tool. 

(i don’t use the lasso or magnet because they’re evil, to me, but they work reasonably well when you have a character on a mostly solid background and art with thick, defined lines. i have no real advice other than that.)

here, we can mix and match some things. i’m going to start by using the magic selection tool to grab all the white or solid colors and remove them with the delete key, like so:

after that, for the more finicky areas, i am a perfectionist and i go in and erase pixels using the eraser tool at 4-5px width. i start by outlining the character, like so:

from there, you can use the lasso tool to select all of the remaining background and delete it. i usually hide the white background layer at this step, too. (i'm also going to color the smoke and the man in the foreground black and redraw the crossbow string with the paintbrush tool. this ain't about him.)

you should end up with something like this:

step four: cleaning the linework

this part is mostly using the layer style stroke and the tool refine edge.

so, because of how selection tools and erasers work, there are a bunch of hidden pixels throughout the image you can’t really see. this drives me absolutely bonkers. at this point, i combine all the layers of the paint i've done so far -- everything except for the transparent background. select the layer with the character — Helena — and apply the layer style stroke, set to “outside” at 3px.

those little black dots are what we're after. there aren't too many right now, because this was a fairly clean edit; sometimes, it looks scary and messy, but that’s okay. the layer style has just outlined all those invisible pixels. i go through and erase them — especially in tight places like corners. for example, this pesky area between strands of hair:

once you’ve erased all of those pixels and cleaned up the image, you can go back into the stroke layer style.

you’ve done a lot of erasing and feathering and cleaning up, so chances are, the line work is not nearly as crisp as it looked in the original panel. that’s fine! shift the settings to “inside” and 1px, like so:

sometimes it’ll need to be 2-3 px, sometimes it’ll need to be center-aligned, and sometimes you might even decide it looks better outside or without the stroke style at all! this is all personal preference. do whatever you like.

once it's where you want it to be, i like to duplicate the layer -- to save the one without the new outline in case anything goes wonky. then right click the copy of the layer and "rasterize style" to get a flat image with new linework.

your workspace should look something like this:

if it happens to feel like the edges are a little harsh — which happens sometimes! especially when using selection instead of eraser — you can select the whole image and use refine edge. this softens it. you don’t need to do much; i usually do 2-3px of feathering, a couple pixels of smoothing, and some contrast, depending on how it looks. see below:

you'll have three layers now. it gets confusing, so try to keep track of which one is your active layer. you can delete old ones, if you want; i generally don't, just in case.

there isn’t a hard and fast rule for this part. do what you think looks good. and if you want to refine the edge before you add the new linework, that can work! do another stroke layer style after the first round! test things out and find out what you like. most of the time, it depends on the image and your preference.

after all that, this is the helena we now have:

step five: creating a new background!

this part is easy. create a new layer, pick a color you like — i tend to pull from the actual background using an eye dropper tool, or if it’s for a multiple-part edit, I use the swatches i’ve decided on for the color scheme of the whole thing — and paint bucket that thing right on there. this is some of the blue that was behind her originally:

i don’t like flat colors, pretty much ever, because they feel harsh to me. so i go back and add artistic touches and mess around with the filters a lot. sometimes i pull text or accents from other panels and follow the same steps as above to incorporate them into the edit; sometimes, i don’t. no rules just vibes.

in this case, i want it to be pretty simple. so i’ll make a new layer, then fill it in with a gradient tool. i usually make a custom gradient; one side is the color of the background and the other side is either black or white, depending on the vibe I want.

i do an orbital gradient most of the time — circles are your friend — and focus the center on something that I want to draw the eye to. here, i’m going to do helena’s face.

then i mess around with the opacity until it looks the way i want it to. like this:

step six: final steps

congrats! you have an edited panel! you’re perfectly fine to post/share/use it at this point, but there are a couple other things i like to do to give it that final polish:

if you want to jazz up your edits, try messing around with outer glow, or drop shadow. both of those layer styles can add some emphasis to your focal point. (i prefer those be kept at a low opacity, when i use them, which isn’t often.)

i'd also recommend messing around with gradient maps if you want to superimpose a larger silhouette over the background. that would take more room than i have left in this already far too long guide, but it does add something to have it in there.

i dislike having text bubbles in my edits unless i specifically put them there, so i do have a process for removing them, much like the smoke or the man in the foreground. again, we are running long already, so i won't get into that here. my recommendation if you don't want to deal with entirely removing a bubble is to just paint over the text inside with white so you have an empty text box or speech bubble instead. it's simpler, quicker, and honestly the more common practice based on what i've seen.

that being said, if you want to know how i paint over them -- or how to do anything i didn't get into here -- feel free to ask. i don't mind writing these up.

i have a guide on how i size my images here, which walks through the exporting process. it’s not strictly necessary, but i like for my edits to remain consistent in size, so i do usually follow it.

in his Yunmeng years, he'd spend a lot of time with the junior disciples, especially when Jiang Fengmian was away. most of it was playing with them to help them relax and enjoy the simple joys of childhood, some of it was making sure madam Yu wasn't too harsh with them, taking the blame for wrongdoings when they occurred. the children of Lotus Pier always loved their shixiong for the warmth and kindness he'd radiate in their presence, and Wei Wuxian simply always adored children.

speaking of Yunmeng days, I haven't posted this here (I think?) despite rambling about it on discord, but a huge part of his troublemaker persona stems from the hatred of madam Yu. she used to punish him a lot, for anything, for pretty much existing (while the harshness of it remains questionable, he'd still get whipped on occasion and sent to the ancestral hall to kneel on a daily basis). his psyche is flexible enough, it adapts and overcomes instead of falling into the pits of self-pity and anger, so to him, it quickly turned to the mindset of 'if I'm going to be punished anyway, I might as well do something to make it feel deserved; if I'll get punished for being myself, I might as well be myself at all times'. the other part of it is, of course, the legacy of his mother.

there are too many things. but one thing he regrets the most is accepting that damn invitation from Jin Zixuan that resulted in the first massacre and the latter's death, ad ultimately, the deaths of Wen Qing and Jiang Yanli. he regrets being the one to make his shijie suffer, and eventually losing the people he loved, despite learning later on that it wasn't his fault, because in some ways, it still was, and it all spiralled down from there.

Lan Wangji, Jiang Yanli, Jiang Cheng, Wen Qing and Wen Ning, every tiny cultivator out there, but especially little Lans and Jin Ling; he likes Nie Huaisang and Lan Xichen, and, in later years, Lan Qiren too. to an extent, he even grows to like Jin Zixuan.

here's a thing about Wei Ying: he doesn't hate. hatred requires a less flexible mind than his, and while some past trauma resurfaces on occasion, he tends to adapt to change rather quickly, so he doesn't wallow in it. he pities Xue Yang, he abhors the actions of Jin Guangyao yet he still doesn't really hate him, he mocks Jin Zixun and is annoyed by the guy, and still there's no burning hatred there. he treats madam Yu with respect despite the not so secret hatred she had for him. it's just not part of who he is. he can only despise himself, he doesn't crave revenge when he's the one being wronged unless it happens in a spur of the moment when he's on the verge of a breakdown. but there's an exception to everything, and that exception is Wen Chao.

only for my story sims, in the spirit of keeping things semi-consistent between chapters, because i swear sim stede gains weight faster than any sim i've ever played, and sim ed often ends up TOO BUFF from all of his energized swimming 😂 other than that, i do not, i just let them do their own thing. i dont really use too many custom body shapes for ts2, but definitely coming back to it after playing with the diversity in ts4 has been a bit jarring, but also custom body shapes are a lot of work so. idk what the solution is!

i think mostly i've gotten better at taking and editing pics? gos was pretty much my introduction to sims cc (with the exception of some sailor moon skins/heads i had for ts1 that my dad had to help me install 😂) so that had a HUGE influence on my style that i never really strayed from. i think i toned it down a bit in ts4, but at my core, i am still very neon/grunge oriented

hi, thank you so much ! i'm not like amazing at tutorials but i'd be happy to share with you my layers & process for this particular set (she saved a psd for once ... everyone cheered!) and give some general advice + i'm going to direct you to this tutorial by @woozis who i think does a great job of explaining things and has more experience with gif blending specifically (this was my first set using 2 gifs in this way; normally i use blending for static gfx or using overlays that aren't 2 gifs from the same source content, which are both great ways to practice) . i highly recommend utilizing multiple resources to get a feel for how different creators do the thing you want to learn, but at the end of the day i basically just start throwing stuff into photoshop and watch it come together in real time with anything gfx related lol . anyways, with that big intro out of the way, let's talk about how we made this set using this gif as the example:

so step one for me working with this content aka music video was just picking out the clips i liked and knew i wanted to use in the set . when it comes to gif blending the 2 gifs you're using need to be the same exact amount of frames or you need to be able to get them there, so basically after i had just pulled as many gifs out of the mv as i roughly thought wanted to use, i imported all of them into ps to see the frame rates and started mix-and-matching the ones that were around the same length to see what would look the best layered over each other. this is very personal preference based but in this case i liked that they were executing similar choreography from different angles and in different outfits and settings. for this gif, i ended up with these 2 separate ones:

these are sharpened but no coloring added yet - as you can see one of the clips is black and white so that can be a great option for blending because you can add whatever color you want over it. of course, if the original content isn't b&w you can just put a b&w filter on it and do the same thing - i recommend this if you want to put gifs together that aren't already color compatible. anyway, once you have your gifs you convert them both to timeline and just drag and drop one over the other. it's usually not going to matter which one you put on top, but that's the one you're going to use the blending effect on, so i went with the black and white gif over the color.

to blend the gifs, i set the blending mode to 'screen' on the top gif. for this one i kept the opacity at 100% but on other gifs in this set i brought it down to around 85% depending on how it looked. then i added my coloring to the base gif + i deepened the blacks on the top gif (note that you need a clipping mask for anything you want to do to the top gif without doing it to both). this is where you'll want to start messing around as you go, screen is my most used option for these purposes but sometimes overlay or multiply looks cooler, and you can mess with whatever opacity you think looks best. here's what my layers look like at this point with that top gif selected + what the gif looks like blended before and after coloring:

already pretty cool! but i wanted to add color to the black and white to really bring the effect home. i used the eyedrop tool to grab the blue from the lighting in the bottom gif (for the other color overlays in this set, i used the red from taeyong's hair) and added that into a solid color layer over the b&w gif with a clipping mask, and set the blending for that solid color layer to 'overlay' (again, you can try different ones for the look you like best)

this is my finished blended gif, from there i just added the text! the actual process of making the gif isn't what is so time consuming imo it's more just about finding the clips that will work together and testing out what you like the look of. this one is probably my favorite blending result from the set and there are plenty of things that i feel like don't look perfect, but ultimately i'm happy with the result and i think the set looks cool anyways -- so i encourage you to just give it a try and chances are it's going to turn out looking nice!

Hi! I was wondering how did you recolor your CAS backgrounds? Or how did you learn to recolor them? It's almost impossible to find a tutorial for the cas rooms. ʕ>⌓<｡ʔ

tbh i just trial and error made changes to the psds the creators released with them and checked how it looked in sims 4 studio until i liked the final product. on average editing the textures for a cas room probably takes me ~12 hours but i am a pretty slow worker too

i don’t own league, i don’t own evelynn, how i write her is how i write her. 

i won’t interact with writers who are minors.

i’m down to write a lot of stuff and many different types of bonds + relationships for evelynn, and i won’t ever want to force a ship. duplicates of a character will always be handled differently from one another.

stuff that’s ought to be tagged will be tagged. if you need me to tag something for you, gimme a ping. i’ll never write rape, incest, pedophilia, etc. although evelynn is a very sexually-charged character in her design beyond just appearance, i have no desire to write any smut. sexual themes are abound however, as are the evelynn-appropriate triggers and themes of death and murder, blood and gore, sadism, and other themes associated with her brand of horror.

while i will use k/da content as a resource, as it pleases me, my evelynn is mainly based as she is within main canon in runeterra. she's very adjustable to other canons, au's, and i will be developing my own headcanon / personal meta. don't steal my shit. everything i've made on my blog thus far is all made by me or commissioned, as referenced at the very bottom of my page.

evelynn is a sick creature, borne from the collective suffering of the rune wars and having been nourished by the pain and agony. she stalks, shapeshifts, and seduces her prey with the goal of bringing them to the highest peak of ecstasy and joy before bringing them to their lowest, to feed on their suffering. although evelynn is a master at seduction and luring victims in, she does not have sex with them and sees no merit in it since she's pretty obsessed with just feasting on their agony. that doesn't mean she couldn't involve herself sexually with other muses, but that's just up to her own discretion, what the situation is of the plot, and if i feel like it'd be interesting to happen upon agreement! generally she's asexual, and is quite literally genderfluid as evelynn takes the form of what would most attract her victims. her most femme-appearing form takes preference since it's made hunting easier, and is referred to in official material as 'she', but she can look however as she pleases.

i’m super crossover friendly, i’m down for oc’s, and i love writing with castmates. however, i will not be interacting with duplicates.

i use icons and a lil bit of fancy formatting in my writing but you don’t have to, i don’t really care! i’ll turn replies to an ask into a separate post though.

honestly, it feels much more like closed circles these days and there's a general faint whiff of paranoia about some things. i think it has to do with the rise of the puritanism that we're seeing more and more in fandoms these days which is both alarming and saddening. it used to be that people didn't have to say "the stuff i write is IC based. this isn't what i believe in/support offline/out of character" because it was understood that people could write awful bastards ( like me! ) and that it was just roleplay.nowadays, it feels like you have to be very deliberate and careful in what you say and do otherwise you'll get people throwing baseless accusations around. i would know. i've been through that myself. cas has been through it. i can imagine other people have done that too. tie in the rise of "omg you're romanticizing X/Y/Z!" that's going on and i'm not surprised it's changing at all. it's honestly rather sad.

besides fucking tiny ass icons? i suppose gratuitous purple prose & thesaurus abuse will do it for me. if i have to use a thesaurus for your fancy ass way of saying "she sighed and looked at him before speaking up" then i'm probably going to want to bite you. like i'm trying to get more purple prosey again to some extent because i want to fancy my writing up again, but if i'm reading your writing and it's something like you'd read in Atlas Shrugged or whatnot, then i'm just going to be over here with my face in my hands doing a very muffled yell because sometimes using simple words is much more impactful. but that's just me; honestly, if you're having fun, then do what you want. but i'm still going to just not be very into that kind of writing.

BIIIIIIIIG side note i’m on the sports festival n recently got past the bkg vs. uraraka fight!  and my fav part about reaching this battle is that not only did he not go easy on her, he still nearly lost to her, AND when he thought that she got a strategy from izuku, he got shot down instantly n was told she made her own.

it’s one of my fav battles in the entire series, and it happens so early it’s easy to forget with the absolute chaos in the following arcs.  but it highlights a few things to me:

one.  katsuki is never one to just take it easy on someone for any reason.  he will go at them with his full tenacity and strength, and if they slack or can’t keep up, that’s on them.  this makes him look really unforgiving  -  but i think it’s a valuable lesson, because why would you expect that level of sportsmanship on the battlefield?  a villain won’t “take it easy” on you because you’re only a first-year hero student.

two.  it was also interesting at how fast everyone in the manga (the general crowd, some pros, even his own classmates) targeted him for throwing everything he had at uraraka...  because she was a girl...  and first of all, this bitch is equal rights equal fights.  but second, he knew exactly what she was capable of.  his strategy was pretty damn sound because if uraraka followed izuku’s advice of floating him?  she would have lost much sooner.

three.  katsuki was one of the first few to REALLY point out that uraraka is a fucking powerhouse.  “what part of her is frail?”  you are so correct king.  she literally threw a whole ass meteor storm at him and he strained himself blasting it away, saying it was a close one.  not to mention she took all those direct blasts?  goddamn.

four.  okay yeah this is mainly abt uraraka, but generally, we gotta appreciate the girls in this manga more.  @ female character writers ur the real ones on god

Considered a big name artist on a petsite called Aywas, Anji sabotaged the PSDs that a user named Ellie was meant to receive in 2014. An apology was never issued.

In 2021, my friends and I reached out to Ellie to get her side of the story. She confirmed this is all true. She never received the original PSDs, so she had to start them over from scratch over the span of 1 to 2 years. As she was badly harassed by Sync’s group, she’s afraid that the newfound attention will send her a fresh, new wave of harassment. Ellie requested that we do not share what she said to us verbatim.

Notes: 

Anji was already an adult in her 20s in 2014, and by 2022, she should be in her 30s. This is relevant, as age is often used to excuse certain behaviors.

Since people have asked how this relates to Dappervolk and what should be the resolution: I think it's still acceptable for Anji to apologize and acknowledge what happened in 2014 on her social media, on whatever platform she chooses to use. She committed the PSD sabotage as a paid site artist, so taking accountability is the professional course of action. In 2020, she apologized on her tumblr blog for using a racial slur back in 2012, so in my opinion, there is no time limit for apologies and for acknowledging a past wrongdoing. Even if this has "nothing" to do with Dappervolk because it all happened on Aywas, it's still relevant to her credibility as a professional site artist.

Quisling Name Controversy

Anji publicly went by the pseudonyms Quisling and Quislings for several years.

I can't get over Quis' username being that. It's the name of a literal nazi who sold out Norway during WW2, it's extremely insensitive to see that name used in a positive connotation.

i was looking up dappervolk the other day, and was VERY taken aback by the dev being named quisling everywhere. yes, it is taught in schools over here, and more than that, quisling traitored his country so hard that his name became a synonym for traitor to your country. it’s in the dictionaries. it’s not something i would’ve built a brand around, or at least put a disclaimer about somewhere. it has pretty negative connotations.

In 2012, a family member looked up the dictionary definition of Quisling. (Source)

In 2015, someone informed Anji of her pseudonym’s association with Vidkun Quisling, a Nazi collaborator, which she acknowledged but laughed off. (Source)

In 2020, I brought up the controversial name on DV and suggested changing it. My thread was promptly removed, and I was issued a message from staff. 2) "Volk” from the site name, Dappervolk, on its own, is pretty innocuous; however, it was often used by Nazis in nationalist slogans and various other avenues such as the car company Volkswagen (which was founded by a Nazi group). It’s mostly that given the origins/associations of the ‘Quisling/Quis’ names gives the use of volk an extra side eye.
