Robert Coningham: the best dad 🥹

The amount of love Robert conveys to Fitzjames in his letters makes me emotional every time. Fitzjames was so fortunate to have a father who loved and supported him like this. I think about how it's for the best that Robert wasn't alive anymore when Fitzjames went missing in the Arctic... it would have killed him.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day I Lost My Girlish Laughter. Definitive and delightful. The Last Tycoon, of course. Lady Rose and Mrs. Memmary - absolutely nothing to do with Hollywood, but it has the exact same vibe you get from watching a black and white movie. The Artifical Silk Girl Rules of Civility/Eve in Hollywood. Olivia de Havilland befriends the protagonist in the latter book. I think that's all that needs to be said. A Touch of Stardust. CAROLE FANFIC, MY BEST BELOVED! Ex-Wife Clothes-Pegs/Sally-Ann. Not my usual fare at all, but sometimes a girl just wants to turn off her brain and relax, and these are perfect 1930s rom-com confections. The Pursuit of Love, just for the vibes. I'm still waiting for Nancy to rise from the dead and write the Jassy-in-Hollywood sequel I so desperately need.

(The letter's handwriting is still a child's scrawl, but it's more careful to ensure that there are no spelling mistakes. Some of it does stray a little bit too far into the margins, likely due to the writer nodding off while penning the letter. It seems that staying up so late for the last one really wasn't the best idea, was it?)

Dear Mr. Dekarios,

I showed mama and papa your letter. Mama got mad at me about bothering you, but papa laughed and said he'd love it if you could help us. He's told me it was okay to write back to you, even if mama insisted that we shouldn't cause trouble to someone so important. I think that you want to help us is a little of what makes you important, mister. Papa was also very happy with the fact you sent him. I could tell because he had a really big smile on his face. He says he's very proud of me for having the confidence to write to what he says is one of the greatest wizards he's ever heard of.
