Just like a small question based on that one ask, but... might the lack of brown/black men in popular M/M ships have to do with people trying really hard not to be racist so they just... never feature black/brown men? Because I know several F/F ships with brown/black women, but I can't remember a single M/M or even M/F with a black/brown male love interest... well, maybe Link/Gan or Zelda/Gan? But besides that one... nothing rings a notable bell.

If we're talking about AO3, Link/Gan has 785 works. Finnpoe has 8,636. Sam/Bucky has 10,591. Do you just not watch live action media?

Part of it is "I don't know. I just don't find them hot for some reason..."-style racism. That can shift with time and exposure but there's no instant fix even if someone is interested in changing their own tastes.

Part of it is being instantly screamed at and held to higher standards. (And yes, no matter how much people want to whine and say this isn't true, it is true, and anyone who goes ahead and writes despite the haters will tell you so.)

Part of it is fear of messing up above and beyond fear of reactions. Personally, I think this is toxic white guilt-flavor time-wasting and it's better to try and fail than not try, but it's a massive factor in what some people choose to write.

A lot of it is simply the composition of the mega-franchises that tend to generate the ships with bajillions of works. If we're looking at AO3 circles, the biggest f/f ships are not that big. If you look at m/m ships of the same size, there are some with some guy who is not white and not a pale-skinned Asian.

Even that wretched Old Guard fandom couldn't completely kill off its ship, though then we get into how you're defining your terms and how much actual skin tone matters.

I don't see anything particularly significant until we get further down the listings, but there are definitely smaller fandoms like Leverage where everybody loves and ships the black guy.

I mean, yes, clearly, media does have a bias against darker skin, and the darker the skin, the bigger the bias. This bias may be exacerbated by fandom, but in a lot of cases, it just seems to be replicated at about the same level.

That pattern notwithstanding, it seems like you just haven't heard of a lot of ships.

Right now, Sandman!! But I also dabble in other fandoms, including Shadowhunters, Supernatural, and a few others!

With the angstiest ENDING? (I'm a HEA stan, so hold on, this'll take a second.) Probably Learning to Say Goodbye - which has an open/hopeful ending.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

HAPPIEST ending? All of them. Oh man. I don't even know. What do you consider the happiest ending? The Titanic AU - Make It Count (which has the happiest possible ending)? Hopefully - My Hope of the Endless series? (And that's just in the Sandman fandom!)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have, yup! I tend not to as a whole, but it has definitely happened!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Oh yes. What kind? Uh. Well. Everything from the schmoopiest first time possible to all-orifices fucking with magical tentacles, sooo? All of it?

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I HAVE WRITTEN SO MANY AND WILL WRITE SO MANY MORE. The craziest crossover I ever wrote is a 5-fandom crossover - set in the Sandman universe. I pulled in characters from the Hades Game, Supernatural, Shadowhunters, and Good Omens in and had all of them face off against Hell! The War for the Dreaming

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Unfortunately, yes, multiple times. I wish that on no person.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yup!!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

A great many, in multiple fandoms!! Shout out to awesome co-authors who keep me sane!!

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Omg I can't pick a FAVORITE. I've had so many over the years, I don't know if I ever could truly pick a favorite. Malec probably comes pretty damn close though, all things considered.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Candy Coated Nightmare. I want to finish it from the perspective of wanting to finish the story - but when the original creator of the gif story quit the fandom due to their work being stolen and stopped the project - finishing the story without them didn't seem right. So while I want to finish it to finish the story - I never will.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I've learned how to hack my ADHD brain and trigger hyperfocus whenever I want using a writing software. Which means I can write very obscene amounts of words, very quickly. (Also experience - I've been doing this for 23+ years now.)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Editing and research. I hate editing, so none of my fics receive more than a cursory read-through at best. And having to heavily research a fic is what kills my enthusiasm for it faster than anything else, so I avoid it at all costs and make up things as I go along whenever that is an option.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Love the idea - but i think you gotta use the AO3 feature that allows you to put the translation when you click/hover over it!

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Wheeew, we're going back to 2004, okay. Gundam Wing was my first ever fandom I wrote for.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

How the hell am I supposed to pick? I love Make It Count because that fic (all 120k) wrote itself. I love Together We Soar because it was the first long fic I wrote myself. (Long for me, anyways.) I love Alexander is Endlessly Surprising because I wrote 2 full sets of the Oldest Game and I thought I did an AWESOME job. I love The War for the Dreaming because it was an insane undertaking and I managed it. I love Magnus Bane: Certified BAMF because it introduced my favorite OC of all time - Oberon Onyx. So many more I could name, but I'll leave it there, at least for now!

I.

The sky boomed again, heavy rain falling and thunderlight cracking in the air.

If this was going to be the end of the world, nobody wanted to go without a fight.

No matter how swarmed by demons they were, all gates of Hell blasting open and Greater Demons leading their respective armies to engulf the planet, they wouldn’t give up on those they swore to protect, not even at cost of their own lives.

But even with the combined powers of Shadowhunters and Downworlders, it wasn’t enough. They were outnumbered, and many of their allies had fallen already. People were dying, cities were being destroyed, and blood was being spilled.

It was a vivid nightmare.

Their only hope was at the hands of Clary, Jace, Izzy, and Simon. They were looking for two of the three Mortal Instruments again - they had disappeared after Valentine, then Clary, used them once at the waters of Lake Lyn. After a very careful survey of the lake, considering how the water was still dangerous, they found out that both the Mortal Cup and the Soul Sword weren’t there anymore. 

They needed to summon Raziel again. To call for help, to seek the power and light of all angels.

They didn’t know if they would answer them, but if there was a group very persistent and stubborn, it was of those four.

Meanwhile, Alec and Magnus were leading their own army in New York. Theirs was one of the strongest in the world, and for a long time, they were successful in holding off the many demons. Alongside their friends and family and many allies in the Shadow World, they kept going.

They kept fighting.

They kept pushing and protecting and resisting.

Until they couldn’t anymore.

They were tired and hurt, too. Magnus was always one second from collapsing due to magical depletion, and Alec had overused his runes so much, they all became a sickly purple and constantly burned at the edges.

It was bad.

It became worse one day when a giant rift opened in the sky. Alec and Magnus were at the top of the nearest tall building, and while Magnus worked on it alongside other warlocks stationed in other buildings at strategic points to close it, Alec was trying to keep the demons attacking at bay. They didn’t have time to call for reinforcements, and the forces were already spread too thin from the non-stop fighting.

And Alec would never leave Magnus unprotected, so that’s that.

But not even Alec could take down a draconic demon alone, no matter how accurate his aim was.

The monster hit Magnus square on the chest with his long tail, sending the warlock to the edge of the building. Without thinking twice, Alec let go of his bow and threw himself at the edge in time to grab Magnus’ hand, while his other hold tight at the rail.

They dangled in the air, dangerously close to falling to their deaths.

Alec tried to hoist them both up, but his runes weren’t working properly anymore and he was too exhausted. Magnus didn’t have enough magic to help either.

The draconic demon got busy with a warlock at the nearest building, but it could come back, so they weren’t safe.

And it was a long way down.

“Alexander-”

“I’m trying!” Alec’s arms were trembling due to the overextension, but he didn’t stop.

When a finger slipped and he cursed out loud, Magnus tried again.

“Sayang , let me go.”

Alec stopped.

There was a loud noise in his ears. And it wasn’t from the battle, the demons, or the screams.

No, it was his heart threatening to stop.

He didn’t hear it right.

He didn’t.

“You know it’s the only way.” Magnus’ voice was calm. Too calm, and that only grated more on Alec.

“I know fucking nothing! You’re crazy if you think I’ll let you go!”

“If you don’t, we both die. Our people need us, Alec. At least one of us needs to be alive to lead them.”

“Joke is on you if you think I’ll be alive if I let you die here, Magnus.”

“Alexander…” Magnus sighed tiredly, but that only made Alec hold on more.

“No! Don’t you dare, Magnus. Don’t you dare give up now!”

There were tears and pain in his voice.

If they were going to die, they would do it together.

“I’m tired…” Magnus confessed in a whisper, but Alec heard him nonetheless.

“Magnus?”

“Yeah?”

“Remember what I told you when we fight that crazy cult you began by accident?”

Magnus blinked sluggishly. “That you would throw himself out of the window because you really wanted to have sex with me?”

At that, Alec laughed loudly, unrestricted and surprised.

By the Angel, when was the last time he did that?

“No, baby.” He smiled, though it was a little sad on the edges. “I said that if you fall, I want to fall with you.”

“You don’t mean-”

“I do. I will. Where you go, I follow Magnus.”

“Isn’t that what you say to your parabatai?”

“For Jace, it’s an oath. For you, it’s a vow.”

Magnus closed his eyes, holding a sob.

Alec tried to say another thing, but a loud roar interrupted him.

The dragon was coming back.

If they stayed there, they would be burned alive.

If they let go, they would fall.

They would die either way.

There was no hope.

“Together?”

“Together.”

Alec let go.

With an appointment arranged for the 'Head' of the Institute to shake hands with The High Warlock Of Brooklyn later that day, he should have known Magnus would still make him pay for choosing the Clave over his cock!

I do, because they have invariably MADE MY DAY, and I want to say thanks for taking the time to send them! 

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Although it doesn’t necessarily have an angsty ending but a sad theme in general, I would have to say my Widower Alec ficlet, To Us, You’re Still Here! Broke my heart to write it but hopefully the happy memories and lasting love are a balance for the grief!

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Aside from my previous answer, all of my fics have happy endings, but the sappiest would probably have to be Love, Spoken And Unspoken because few things are more romantic than exchanging poetry quotes, imo!

Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I don’t, and I can’t say I have the urge to either - it takes a more deft touch than mine to blend two worlds successfully! 

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

On occasion, though it’s more of the blink-and-you-miss variety! I’ve read some intimate scenes that managed to hit that sweet spot combination of intoxication, realism and humour, and I aspire to one day do the same!

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I was once asked permission for Your Full Attention to be translated into Portuguese, but I’m not sure if it was actually done because they didn’t respond to my request for a link! 

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, I haven’t - and given how I write at a pace that would probably frustrate the hell out of a co-writer, no matter their saintly patience, that’s never likely to happen either! I much preferred being a beta (of the informal kind) that bounced ideas with friends looking for another perspective, tbh, than a stressed out writing partner to someone!

What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Malec Forever, Baby! 

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

On a bad day, the answer is all 7 of them - but on a good day, the answer is I KNOW I’ll finish all 7 of them because I’m a damned completionist and stubborn as hell!

What are your writing strengths?

I’m confident in my ability to write humour, innuendo/word play is second nature to me, inserting gestures of casual affection wherever humanly possible, composing a decent summary, and delivering details in a pretty turn of phrase that hopefully avoids purple prose! 

What are your writing weaknesses?

Dangerous question to ask a self-doubter, but I’ll go with too-long sentences, not trusting the reader to visualise the scene I’m badly describing so I overcompensate by plotting each touch, step and position instead (which is a failure of trust, I know), and sometimes rushing my endings! 

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Uh, I have none, really? Author’s choice, I suppose, although accuracy would need to be a high priority, I imagine!? I’ve had no problem with reading snippets of dialogue in languages that are foreign to me personally, and on the one occasion I myself needed to include a translation of a Spanish lullaby into English for a story, I sought help from native speakers! 

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Shadowhunters is (almost certainly) the only fandom I can see myself writing for because, no matter how much I enjoy other shows and films (and I DO, even though it appears I’m stuck in a SH-only bubble), I simply don’t feel the urge to explore other ships/characters outside of their canon in the same way I do with Malec! They continue to capture my imagination as a special couple, and as individuals, and until that fascination is somehow exhausted, I’ll keep writing about them!

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

Made All The Difference is one I’m particularly proud of because it’s more introspective and structured than my other stories, and the closest I’ve come to a character study of Alec (whilst being able to indulge in Malec moments that complement his train of thought throughout their evening together)!

Summary:  Magnus and Max invite Alec for their first Christmas together.

A/N:  I wrote this for a friend and decided to post it after all. It's based on our AU where Magnus' disastrous break up with his abusive ex-girlfriend Camille leaves him having to raise Max alone. Things are looking pretty bleak until Magical-Baby-Whisperer Alec Lightwood moves to the apartment unit next to his and things develop from there. I might write this au properly as a fic someday, as right now it only exists in all caps talks on Discord, but for now I hope you all enjoy this fluff blurb anyway!

Alec had been working on an extra credit assignment for college when he heard the rustling by the door. He suspected he wasn’t supposed to hear it because he could make out Magnus’ voice constantly shushing Max and chuckling because he "wasn’t following the plan" and was a "traitor" and would "wake Alec up", but the boy just kept laughing and screaming happy, which made Alec chuckle, too.

He should probably be asleep, actually; it was late and a weekend and the middle of his winter break. He definitely shouldn’t be working on a college assignment a couple of nights before Christmas, but his family had traveled abroad and he hadn’t felt like joining them, so that meant he wouldn’t be flying home for the holidays, and aside from a lunch with Jace before he left for Clary’s country house he had no other plans, which meant he had nothing better to do than work on assignments to stop thinking about how lonely it was.

Something sliding under his door cut him out from his melancholic thoughts and he got up to pick it up, curious. It was an envelope and inside it there was a Christmas card, which read: “Mr. Lightwood, you are hereby solemnly invited to the magnificent Bane Christmas Feast that shall take place tomorrow night, at 9 pm. Attendance is mandatory. Ugly Christmas Sweaters are a must. PS: Bring dessert, please? Signed: Magnus and Max”.

It was decorated with a series of drawings that had obviously been made by Max. Now Alec wasn’t the type that cried much or easily at all, but it made his eyes water a bit. He had just told Magnus offhandedly an hour ago through texts that he wasn’t actually going to visit his family for Christmas and had gotten no response. He had figured some Max emergency had kept him from answering, which was common, but now it seemed like the other had ran in the snow to the nearest store and ignored Max’s sleep time just to prepare a card just for him. To invite him to spend Christmas with them. To be part of their family holiday. He almost felt like he should say no, that he didn’t want to intrude. It had never even occurred to him that Magnus might want him to spend the night with them. But after Magnus had gone through all this trouble and Max had sounded so happy… And he really, truly, more than anything, wanted to spend the day with them too. So he got his phone and texted Magnus again, a simple “Yes!”. He knew he would understand.

The series of happy faces and heart emojis he got back only made him chuckle again.

It was exactly 10 pm on the next day when Alec knocked on Magnus’ door. He had bought an apple pie, and he had on a red sweater that could be mistaken for a Christmas one, as he didn’t exactly had any, but he was sure Magnus meant what he said. He was slightly nervous, but he didn’t know why, he had been to their apartment plenty of times before, had spent Halloween with them. Maybe it was just the fact Christmas was considered a family holiday that was making him like this, he wondered if it meant Magnus considered him part of his family, or if he would like him to be part of his family someday. Alec knew he would, so much, but they hadn’t known each other for that long so he had no reason to think like that, it was probably weird he did, right? Oh, maybe this was a bad idea after all.

The door opening saved him from his thoughts and the sight of Magnus and Max immediately made him feel better.

“Alec! You came!” Magnus said happily, at the same time Max screamed “Aec!” and it warmed his heart. Apparently, Magnus was really literal about the sweaters. Max had one that looked like the body of a reindeer, with tiny antlers on his head to match, and Magnus’ was bright red with sparkly letters, because of course it was. It read “Kiss me under the mistletoe”, except the mistletoe was on the hem of the sweater, which made Alec glance down and think of… He snapped his eyes back up, hoping the burn in his cheeks wasn’t as noticeable as he thought.

“Hi. Uh, merry Christmas! I-I brought pie.”

“Oh, wonderful!” Magnus grinned and leaned forward to give Alec a quick kiss on the lips. It was a recent development to their relationship and one that Alec never thought he would get used to as just the small brush of lips left him dazed and with his heart hammering. “Come on in.”

He did. All the while Max was chanting ‘Aec’ and extending his arms for him until Magnus closed the door and said. “Alright, alright, I know you like Alec more than me, little traitor. Trade with me.” He took the pie from Alec’s hand and he got an armful of Max, which was the best thing ever. He kissed him and held him close and talked to him in the entranced silly way all people talked to babies as he carried him to the couch. The apartment was also decorated for maximum Christmas spirit. Alec had seen it before, but now it seemed like every surface was covered with lit Christmas candles, snowmen plushies, santa claus decorations. The tree was lit and sparkling in multiple colours in the corner, almost as sparkly as Magnus. Very different from Christmas at home, which was usually a homely but moderate occasion. He loved it.

Max eventually started wiggling and he let him down, watching him half crawl and half wobble away until he reached his playmat in the corner. He was almost two years old now, had barely been one when he had first met him. Time passed by so fast.

Magnus was eyeing Max too as he sat down next to him. “Dinner is almost ready.”

That made Alec raise an eyebrow.

“Did you cook?”

“Heavens, no. I ordered everything from a restaurant, but I do have to heat it up, right? That counts. There are appetizers on the table, too, if you are hungry meanwhile.”

“I’m fine,” Alec said, but glanced at the table anyway, noticing all the places put up. “Is someone else coming?”

“Just Ragnor, Catarina and Raphael. But they won’t be here for a while, dinner is actually at ten.” He confessed. “I asked you to come earlier because I wanted to spend some time alone with you.”

“Oh,” Alec said, blushing, but Magnus wasn’t done.

“I… wanted to give you something.” He said lowly, reaching to the side table and picking a small brown box with no brand name or markings aside from the blue ribbon tied around it. He reached for Alec’s hand and put the box in it, seeming slightly nervous, which was rare, but he was smiling when he said. “Come on, open it.”

Alec unfastened the ribbon with care and pulled the lid off the tiny box, heart hammering in his chest. Inside it, there was a key, very similar to his own.

“It’s a key to the apartment. My apartment. To here. I want you to have it. I want you to be able to come in anytime you want and, and feel at home here, with us. If, if you would like to, that is.”

Alec was speechless, staring at the key in the box as if it was the most precious thing in the world, because it was. He had been doubting if Magnus wanted him to be truly part of their family, of their life, and here was proof that he did, that this wasn’t just a temporary thing, that it was something more. Happiness and warmth exploded inside Alec and, as words often failed him, he grabbed Magnus by the front of his sweater and kissed him hard and deep, pouring all his feelings into it that he couldn’t say out loud, reeling at Magnus’ gasp and how he kissed back and how his hand went behind Alec’s head to keep him close, until they were forced to part, breathing hard and panting, foreheads resting against each other.

“I’d love to. I… This is everything. Thank you so much, Magnus.”

“No, thank you, Alexander. For everything. I’d never have been able to do this without you.”

“Yes, you would, you are amazing. Amazing man, amazing father, amazing everything.” He said, and then, blushed again. “I feel bad now, though, all I got you was this cologne Izzy recommended.”

Magnus chuckled, his thumb caressing his cheek.

“You are here, Alexander. That’s the best gift I could have ever wished for.”

And he pulled him in for another kiss among Christmas lights.

I tend to be a 'happily ever after or ELSE' type of gal, so I'm gonna skip this one!

Oh jeeze I need to pick one. Recently? Probably Make It Count, my Titanic AU for the Sandman fandom. STUPID proud of that one.

I definitely have, yup!

Everything that could make you blush, and then a few more kinds for fun. Everything from clothes-on frottage to tentacles.

I do write crossovers!! Craziest one I've ever done is the 5-fandom crossover battle of the five fandoms fic I did!

Has Hades (the game), Good Omens, Supernatural, and Shadowhunters, all set in the Sandman universe. WILDLY fun fic to write.

Sadly, I've had almost a dozen fics stolen over the past decade. 0/10 do not recommend.

Oh yes, a bunch of them!!

Are 510k (with a 535k sequel, plus another 60k in other side fics), and 626k (with 2 more epilogues that are both not SHORT) respectively.

I don't... have one? I sail an armada, y'all.

*sighs* Oh yes. Candy Coated Nightmare. I am not finishing it on principle. It was originally inspired by a gif fic. That gif fic was taken down when the creator left the fandom due to their art and gifs being stolen over and over again.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Speedy writing, ADHD hacking my brain, and BAMF characters.

FUCKING. RESEARCH. (Also writing in any dialogue type that is not modern-time.)

I like it when used sparringly - can be hard to follow the fic when it's used a lot!

Back in 2004, Gundam Wing. (Though, if we're being technical - that's the first fandom I published fic for. The first ever fandom I WROTE for was Sailor Moon and it was back in 2000/2001.) o
