Circa 2003, my then-future boyfriend put an empty envelope into a Bank of Nova Scotia ATM, declared that it contained a $1000 cheque, and triumphantly walked away with ten crisp pictures of the queen ($200 Canadian).

He was 16 or 17 then; I was the same age, and when he told me that story months later, I just remember thinking how spectacularly dumb that had been.

His grandmother paid the bank back, and he was forever banned from the Bank of Nova Scotia.

I still dated him, though, and a scant two years later, the Toronto Dominion Bank across the street still gave him a 25K limit on a credit card, despite his unreliable and extremely part-time job being his only source of income. (Other than his grandmother and his girlfriend bailing him out to the tune of thousands several times.)

I don’t know if he ever ended up declaring bankruptcy or anything like that - after we broke up in 2007 he was his own problem - but I was always flabbergasted by his recklessness, and I definitely thought about him last week.
