Can I have your attention for a minute
It's nothing bad!
I wanted to share a little website with you, one i have used in the past. It's called Future Me.
All it is is a little web based word processor, that you fill in a letter to your future self, fill in your email address, pick a date, and hit send. The site will store the letter, and send it to your designated email on your designated date. It's completely free, though they accept donations if you like the service.
I've used this site for YEARS, it's not at all new, but it has at times been a little bastion of hope and good things for me. Every year on my birthday, I send a letter to myself, and I receive the one I sent the year before. I write about what I've been through that year, what I've accomplished, and what my hopes are for the year to come.
I have cried every single time I've gotten that letter. I know it's from me, but by the time it comes around, I've usually forgotten I sent it. But... every year on my birthday, I receive a letter from Past Me, who cared enough to sit down and have hopes about my future. And it makes me want to pay it forward to Future Me, and dare to hope that she, too, will remember that someone cared a lot about her future, and choose to keep going even further.
Anyway, I am giving you the link now, because there are definitely going to be rough times ahead of us, but I feel like maybe writing ahead to Future You, to the You that has made it past the rough times, might make them ever so slightly easier to endure. Knowing that Future You is waiting at the end of the line to welcome you, holding onto the letters you sent.
#personal#hope#encouragement#you don't have to send for your birthdays obviously#hell write one every week if it helps#or a year from today or whatever#it doesn't have to be a grand affair#sending your love ahead to Future You may be enough on some random tuesday#send yourself a letter for 6 months from now about 1 good thing that happened#do it daily if you like how it feels#or don't do it I suppose#but I promise it's worth it

How lock-in hurts design
Berliners: Otherland has added a second date (Jan 28) for my book-talk after the first one sold out - book now!
If you've ever read about design, you've probably encountered the idea of "paving the desire path." A "desire path" is an erosion path created by people departing from the official walkway and taking their own route. The story goes that smart campus planners don't fight the desire paths laid down by students; they pave them, formalizing the route that their constituents have voted for with their feet.
Desire paths aren't always great (Wikipedia notes that "desire paths sometimes cut through sensitive habitats and exclusion zones, threatening wildlife and park security"), but in the context of design, a desire path is a way that users communicate with designers, creating a feedback loop between those two groups. The designers make a product, the users use it in ways that surprise the designer, and the designer integrates all that into a new revision of the product.
This method is widely heralded as a means of "co-innovating" between users and companies. Designers who practice the method are lauded for their humility, their willingness to learn from their users. Tech history is strewn with examples of successful paved desire-paths.
Take John Deere. While today the company is notorious for its war on its customers (via its opposition to right to repair), Deere was once a leader in co-innovation, dispatching roving field engineers to visit farms and learn how farmers had modified their tractors. The best of these modifications would then be worked into the next round of tractor designs, in a virtuous cycle:
https://securityledger.com/2019/03/opinion-my-grandfathers-john-deere-would-support-our-right-to-repair/
But this pattern is even more pronounced in the digital world, because it's much easier to update a digital service than it is to update all the tractors in the field, especially if that service is cloud-based, meaning you can modify the back-end everyone is instantly updated. The most celebrated example of this co-creation is Twitter, whose users created a host of its core features.
Retweets, for example, were a user creation. Users who saw something they liked on the service would type "RT" and paste the text and the link into a new tweet composition window. Same for quote-tweets: users copied the URL for a tweet and pasted it in below their own commentary. Twitter designers observed this user innovation and formalized it, turning it into part of Twitter's core feature-set.
Companies are obsessed with discovering digital desire paths. They pay fortunes for analytics software to produce maps of how their users interact with their services, run focus groups, even embed sneaky screen-recording software into their web-pages:
https://www.wired.com/story/the-dark-side-of-replay-sessions-that-record-your-every-move-online/
This relentless surveillance of users is pursued in the name of making things better for them: let us spy on you and we'll figure out where your pain-points and friction are coming from, and remove those. We all win!
But this impulse is a world apart from the humility and respect implied by co-innovation. The constant, nonconsensual observation of users has more to do with controlling users than learning from them.
That is, after all, the ethos of modern technology: the more control a company can exert over its users ,the more value it can transfer from those users to its shareholders. That's the key to enshittification, the ubiquitous platform decay that has degraded virtually all the technology we use, making it worse every day:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/19/twiddler/
When you are seeking to control users, the desire paths they create are all too frequently a means to wrestling control back from you. Take advertising: every time a service makes its ads more obnoxious and invasive, it creates an incentive for its users to search for "how do I install an ad-blocker":
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/07/adblocking-how-about-nah
More than half of all web-users have installed ad-blockers. It's the largest consumer boycott in human history:
https://doc.searls.com/2023/11/11/how-is-the-worlds-biggest-boycott-doing/
But zero app users have installed ad-blockers, because reverse-engineering an app requires that you bypass its encryption, triggering liability under Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This law provides for a $500,000 fine and a 5-year prison sentence for "circumvention" of access controls:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/12/youre-holding-it-wrong/#if-dishwashers-were-iphones
Beyond that, modifying an app creates liability under copyright, trademark, patent, trade secrets, noncompete, nondisclosure and so on. It's what Jay Freeman calls "felony contempt of business model":
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
This is why services are so horny to drive you to install their app rather using their websites: they are trying to get you to do something that, given your druthers, you would prefer not to do. They want to force you to exit through the gift shop, you want to carve a desire path straight to the parking lot. Apps let them mobilize the law to literally criminalize those desire paths.
An app is just a web-page wrapped in enough IP to make it a felony to block ads in it (or do anything else that wrestles value back from a company). Apps are web-pages where everything not forbidden is mandatory.
Seen in this light, an app is a way to wage war on desire paths, to abandon the cooperative model for co-innovation in favor of the adversarial model of user control and extraction.
Corporate apologists like to claim that the proliferation of apps proves that users like them. Neoliberal economists love the idea that business as usual represents a "revealed preference." This is an intellectually unserious tautology: "you do this, so you must like it":
https://boingboing.net/2024/01/22/hp-ceo-says-customers-are-a-bad-investment-unless-they-can-be-made-to-buy-companys-drm-ink-cartridges.html
Calling an action where no alternatives are permissible a "preference" or a "choice" is a cheap trick – especially when considered against the "preferences" that reveal themselves when a real choice is possible. Take commercial surveillance: when Apple gave Ios users a choice about being spied on – a one-click opt of of app-based surveillance – 96% of users choice no spying:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/96-of-us-users-opt-out-of-app-tracking-in-ios-14-5-analytics-find/
But then Apple started spying on those very same users that had opted out of spying by Facebook and other Apple competitors:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/14/luxury-surveillance/#liar-liar
Neoclassical economists aren't just obsessed with revealed preferences – they also love to bandy about the idea of "moral hazard": economic arrangements that tempt people to be dishonest. This is typically applied to the public ("consumers" in the contemptuous parlance of econospeak). But apps are pure moral hazard – for corporations. The ability to prohibit desire paths – and literally imprison rivals who help your users thwart those prohibitions – is too tempting for companies to resist.
The fact that the majority of web users block ads reveals a strong preference for not being spied on ("users just want relevant ads" is such an obvious lie that doesn't merit any serious discussion):
https://www.iccl.ie/news/82-of-the-irish-public-wants-big-techs-toxic-algorithms-switched-off/
Giant companies attained their scale by learning from their users, not by thwarting them. The person using technology always knows something about what they need to do and how they want to do it that the designers can never anticipate. This is especially true of people who are unlike those designers – people who live on the other side of the world, or the other side of the economic divide, or whose bodies don't work the way that the designers' bodies do:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/20/benevolent-dictators/#felony-contempt-of-business-model
Apps – and other technologies that are locked down so their users can be locked in – are the height of technological arrogance. They embody a belief that users are to be told, not heard. If a user wants to do something that the designer didn't anticipate, that's the user's fault:
https://www.wired.com/2010/06/iphone-4-holding-it-wrong/
Corporate enthusiasm for prohibiting you from reconfiguring the tools you use to suit your needs is a declaration of the end of history. "Sure," John Deere execs say, "we once learned from farmers by observing how they modified their tractors. But today's farmers are so much stupider and we are so much smarter that we have nothing to learn from them anymore."
Spying on your users to control them is a poor substitute asking your users their permission to learn from them. Without technological self-determination, preferences can't be revealed. Without the right to seize the means of computation, the desire paths never emerge, leaving designers in the dark about what users really want.
Our policymakers swear loyalty to "innovation" but when corporations ask for the right to decide who can innovate and how, they fall all over themselves to create laws that let companies punish users for the crime of contempt of business-model.

A BioWare Guide on How to Murder a Fanbase
I have been a Dragon Age super-fan for almost fourteen years, now. I have played every game, with every DLC. I have read every novel, lore book, and every comic — yes, even the terrible ones that are better off forgotten. I have seen the anime film, the animated series, and the web mini-series. I have enjoyed all of these pieces of the franchise over and over, more times than I can count. So, make no mistake: the negativity you’re about to hear comes from a place of love for this fantasy world, developed by many creative people over the years. I would love nothing more than to see the resurrection of passion in the Dragon Age fandom again. But the unfortunate truth is, that resurrection is only needed because BioWare took the fandom out back and shot it in the first place.
In December 2018, three years after the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition’s Trespasser epilogue DLC, BioWare first announced the then-untitled next Dragon Age game with a teaser trailer. At this point, most fans were anticipating this would mean within the next couple years, we would see the game. This assumption was based on the fact that Dragon Age: Inquisition was first announced in 2012, and released in 2014, with an extra year of development added last minute.
There have been dribbles of extra content since then, adding to the franchise. This was enough to keep some fans still breathing and interested. 2020’s Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights was a lovely anthology. 2020’s Dragon Age: Blue Wraith and 2021’s Dark Fortress were wonderful comics tying up the story started in Knight Errant. And 2022’s Dragon Age: Absolution was a well-animated series with an interesting cast of characters and story. But all these still left the fandom with a major question: What was going on with the next game? It was untypical of BioWare to be so secretive, in comparison to how they handled sharing information of the past games in the franchise. The only form of updates fans still have to go on is mostly just concept art and short stories, hinting that something must be in production. But why was the wait so long?
In 2015, the first version of the next Dragon Age began with a clear vision, clear scope of practice, and a reportedly happy developer team. Most gloriously in my book, there was no multi-player… but this did not align with the Electronic Arts typical money-mad schemes. EA’s push for “games as a service” meant they wanted to monetize all their games as much as possible, and therefore, they wanted them to be a live service — as Anthem demonstrated, that meant sacrificing things that are staples of good RPGs, like narrative and character choice. So in 2017, version one of the next Dragon Age was scrapped and replaced. This new version would have, in total or to at least some degree, an online portion of play.
There is one part of Schreier’s article, “The Past and Present of Dragon Age 4,” that really sticks out to me, regarding this:
“One person close to the game told me this week that Morrison’s critical path, or main story, would be designed for single-player and that goal of the multiplayer elements would be to keep people engaged so that they would actually stick with post-launch content.”
The idea of splitting up components of a game into single-player and multi-player is a terrible idea, because it means that there would be a large bulk of content only accessible through online gaming; something many fans, like myself, are repulsed by. Even if I did enjoy it, I spent most of my life growing up with either no internet or shoddy internet incapable of playing online games. I know many rural people who are still in that position, losing more and more of their favourite gaming pastimes because they are locked out of the ability to play them. It is a disservice to hide content behind a wall like this, especially in a world that is so lore-heavy like Dragon Age. The news of multi-player in Dragon Age understandably upset many, and this is when I first noticed a large drop off in excitement over the next game.
However, in 2021, the failure of Anthem (multi-player) and success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (single-player) led the executives at EA to bend to the wishes of BioWare leadership and allow them to go back to the drawing board yet again on the next Dragon Age. This meant removing all multi-player content!
While I am very happy that there will reportedly be no multi-player in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, I can’t help but feel bitter and a little disgusted over the ridiculous development time spent on something no one but EA wanted in the first place. If it weren’t for this foolishness, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf would be in our hands right now. Instead, it’s been in development hell for nearly nine years and counting. Nine years is a long time to expect fans to carry a torch for you through radio silence, but it’s no wonder BioWare has shared barely anything about the next game; it’s been in flux for so long, they likely haven’t had anything concrete to show.
BioWare hurt its reputation even more when the news broke that the studio very suddenly laid off 50 people who were working on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. This is pretty damning on its own, but BioWare took it a step further. Former developer Jon Renish shared a statement revealing that the studio was only willing to offer laid-off employees two weeks of severance per year of service, and denied health benefits. The denial of health benefits in particular is a pretty wild move for a studio with a reputation for “stress casualties”. The latest news on this is that BioWare has still so far refused to negotiate better severance packages, leading to a lawsuit. The lawsuit originally had 15 former employees, but this dropped due to the fear of not being able to afford to pay their bills. So now, while EA sits on $400 million net income, the laid-off employees are struggling to buy holiday presents for their children. These horrid business practices are not to be ignored when accounting for a lack of faith in a studio. What kind of monsters reward workers who make your games special with vaguely reasoned lay-offs?
The latest news on the Dragon Age: Dreadwolf front from BioWare came early this month, December 2023, with a trailer… announcing a trailer that will come next summer… that will announce the release of the game. Supposedly. Maybe. We’ll see. But by this time, BioWare is something of a laughing stock of their own fandom. Reactions to the video released with a pretty map graphic and a few rendered locations were, from what I personally observed, mostly sardonic in nature. People have commented on the vapourware nature of the game, and like all vapourware, that leads to disintegrating trust.
Despite all this, people like Mary Kirby, (one of the veteran Dragon Age writers who was a victim of the layoffs,) said, “it’s bittersweet that Dreadwolf is my last DA game, but I still hope you all love it as much as I do,” encouraging fans to still support the game when it eventually is released. But after every misstep BioWare has taken, that’s a tough sell now. Fans are finicky, RPG fans more so than others, one could argue. We have our favourites, and many of us stick to those favourites for life over our appreciation for the artistry — but that relationship between studio and fan should go both ways. EA and BioWare has betrayed that relationship, and it will take a hell of a lot to build it back up again, now.

ok i know i'm the 101st person to compare the phantom troupe and the heil-ly family, but with each new chapter we get more and more to work with & i'm chewing on it 24/7 like drywall. let's talk fatalism:
so first of all shoutout to the number one champion of this theory, my main man nobunaga:

literally idk if the guy is in a nostalgic mood or what, but he will not stop yapping about the similarities and for that i commend him & his service
for the record, phinks & feitan don't seem tooooo convinced. phinks specifically points out that hey, actually, we aren't amateurs like these guys and we don't have some crazy genocide murderscheme going on. this much is obvious in the way the PT reacts to luini's insane murderfanboying with "huh????????" *stab*
the phantom troupe do not want to destroy the world, nor were they designed to- they were designed for a very specific purpose and that was to create an environment (a web, hah) that could lure in the big criminals they wanted revenge against, while being dangerous enough to keep the petty criminals out.
these are two very different vision boards!!!
....that nevertheless share some strikingly similar imagery
and we find even more parallels in their respective leaders: aside from the obvious biblical resemblances, morena and chrollo share a similar outlook on life-- more specifically, a similar outlook on death.
more seem uncaring about their respective prospects of survival. self-preservation is such an inherently human trait- hell, a trait inherent to the living- that the lack of any such instinct whatsover is pretty damn terrifying. it leads to a certain kind of alienation from humanity that we know at least chrollo has felt (when he says shit like "humans are so interesting" like damn get your head outta your ass you are one of them). it makes them striking and scary and unpredictable. fucking brocco li points this out:
he's talking about the troupe here, but he could just as easily be talking about the heil-ly. because once again, the mafia is the establishment and the heil-ly and phantom troupe are decidedly not. the regular kakin mafia looks out for their own self-interests, which can lead to unchecked greed but is also what causes them to not go around murdering civilians just because they feel like it.
think of the loss in profits!!
now, nobunaga seems to think of the heil-ly as a sort of prototype- unrefined spider. when they're first investigating the heil-ly hideout, he says "maybe a switch was flipped when one of their own was killed," [see figure 1 above] which is a reasonable assumption to make considering his own experience. but when we check back in with the heil-ly...
their reaction to losing luini is "bummer," before immediately talking about what abilities they should develop to replace him. and in the second panel, when hinrigh kills padaille, the guys who are supposed to be his comrades just.. run away. later morena mentions that those same members are now leveling up to get revenge on hinrigh, but it seems like that stems more from hurt pride and morbid curiosity to see what they can accomplish with their shiny new powers.
these mfs are singing a "let's go hunt the mafia" jingle
big contrast to the way the xi-yu react to the death of lynch^
now both the troupe and the heil-ly are known to have fairly blasé reactions towards death and violence and general in the past. and that extends to their comrades' fights:
shalnark and co play cards while uvogin get leeches injected into his veins, or phinks & co stand by and watch feitan almost get his ass handed to him by zazan in meteor city- before he starts taking things seriously, that is. but i think that comes from a genuine respect in their comrades' strength. like everyone knew uvo could handle the shadow beasts just like they knew feitan could handle zazan. the heil-ly also seem to enjoy each others company and have a great rapport while chopping up dead bodies... but i think they don't expect much from their comrades in the way the troupe does. i mean, it's like phink's says: the troupe doesn't take on amateurs. everyone in the heil-ly is an amateur (except morena) so i don't think their laissez-faire attitude comes from confidence in their own abilities- i think they actually just do not care.
this whole exchange felt sooooo spiders-coded. which makes sense: i mean plenty of them are fans of the spiders! i think yokotani (the lawyer) was deadass trying to get an autograph lol
one thing to note is that when nobunaga attacks terebellum, he assumes the reason the gang hadn't shown signs of confrontation thus far was because they were convinced they were safe- that nobunaga and hinrigh couldn't get to them. i think that's only half the truth: when hinrigh throws a knife at this guy (the heil-ly's "organ" whatever that could mean) he just thinks "huh i wonder how long this would take to heal," before being saved by an issue of shonen jump. then he gets chastised for being reckless and going against morena's orders to keep his head down, but it's all very unserious. then everyone just kind of wanders off to do their own thing.
can i also just say i was getting from real uvogin vibes from terebellum over here
again, i can't really make any blanket statements with information we have available. but my current outlook is that the biggest difference between the spiders and the heil-ly right now is that the heil-ly is what chrollo had initially envisioned for the troupe: remember the "i am the head but i don't matter and you shouldn't make choices with my life in mind" speech? i think this is what that would look like. we know that (up until yorknew), chrollo truly believed that everyone saw the spiders as he did. that he would have no value as a hostage. that they would all be able to accept his death and move on:
and this turned out to be a fatal flaw.
the levels of cognitive dissonance going on during this whole exchange...
he was soooo in hhis head about being above humanity in his own little conceptual space where life and death don't matter that he forgot to look around and realize not everyone was there with him.
there were some, like phinks, who were in line with chrollo's philiosophy. kudos to them ig. but there were enough people who wanted to keep their friend alive- and are still working their asses off to do so today!- that his plan failed. pakunoda chief among them god rest her soul. this moment was one of the first dominos that sent into into the downward spiral he's on today. because after all he invested in the spider, all he gave up for it, it's web is slowly but surely falling apart. he is losing one lifelong member after another in events he is either powerless to stop or has a direct hand in. the ethos that kept him in this purgatory where he could temporarily transcend pain and guilt and humanity is unravelling, and the people he loves (not all of them, at least) don't share in it, and if that's the case then they've been suffering all this time. and if that's the case then what the hell has he been doing, and what the hell is the point.
so now he's stuck on a ship with a group of people that are like his own but worse (and younger and stupider g'bless) lead by someone who's like him but at peace. (and also probably worse lol). having a breakdown because people might love him. also he's trying to steal a national treasure because this is a nic cage movie apparently hey how many words is this post again
TLDR; chrollo is loosing the idgaf war

Loki stood in his full Asgardian regalia in front of a mirror conjured in their living room. He smoothed his hair and took in his reflection, his lip twitched at the juxtaposition it presented. There he was, in his royal armor, green and black and gold in crisp lines, while in the background was their humble Midgardian living room, with its worn furniture and cob webs in the corners. He considered for a moment what some former version of himself might have said about this scene. Something sharp and pointed, most likely, born out of naivete and of service to no one. Today he was merely amused by the contrast.
Thor appeared beside him and Loki gestured with his hand, the mirror extended to accommodate his brother's reflection as well. He then glanced down at Thor's stomach, and the mirror widened a few more inches. This earned him a punch on the arm and he chuckled as he rubbed away the twinge. The two princes stood and observed their images, straightening a belt here or a lock of hair there.
"Not bad, overall." Thor suggested. "Some of us have more room for improvement than others." "Oh, brother, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself." Loki answered with a good-natured scoff.
Loki picked up his helm, if one could call it that. It was hardly something to be worn into battle, at least not for long. The crown of it was open, as was the nape. Truly, it was little more than a band that circled his brow, with guards coming down on either side of his jaw. It was still the familiar polished gold, with his traditional horns arching up and back, of course. He lifted the headpiece into place and studied his appearance again. The open design was appealing, to be sure, neatly framing his face. It was certainly more... approachable than a full helm. He supposed that he was unlikely to take any blows to the head tonight, at any rate.
Thor had a headpiece to match,in a muted silver with wings, naturally. He donned his as well and the two brothers stood side-by-side, irrefutably sons of Asgard.
"Just like the old days." Thor grinned. Loki smirked. "Not quite."
The brothers made their way down the road toward the hall. The town was lively. It was early yet, but still there were glimpses of formal attire and courtly clothes. The styles were largely Asgardian, but Loki recognized fabrics that were clearly Khadija's handiwork. When they arrived at the hall they were met by Valkyrie, in her ceremonial armor, sword at her hip. She greeted the brothers each in turn with a bracing handshake.
Loki looked around expectantly, then frowned. "I thought she was with you this afternoon." "Yeah. She said you had to wait for the festivities to start." He grunted. "Outrageous." "I did take a picture+ of her in the dress." "Oh, excellent!" Loki waited with anticipation. She made no move. His face fell as realization hit. "That was entirely uncalled for." "And yet it was so satisfying." Thor laughed his approval.
There was still work being done inside the hall. Final arrangements were being made, food was being laid out, musicians were arriving and warming up. Thor took a breath. "Not long now."
Loki couldn't recall whose idea it was originally, but it had been decided that on this momentous occasion of their first celebration, he, Thor, and Valkyrie would stand outside the entrance to the hall and greet the attendees as they arrived. The three occupied themselves by lending a hand where needed and making their own final adjustments. Time passed quickly in these hours counting down, and before long the trio were standing before the doors.
Thor placed his hand on the latch and looked to Loki and Valkyrie expectantly. "Ready?" Valkyrie nodded. "Lets get this started." They pushed open the doors and stepped outside to a crowd of cheers. "Welcome, all!" Thor boomed with arms spread wide. He stood aside with Loki and Val as the crowd began moving through.
Not every guest stopped to address them, but most did. At first, Loki kept a weather eye on the crowd, watching for you. However, he quickly lost sight of that goal in the process of greeting the revelers. He was surprised to realize how many of their names he knew. Of course, he expected to know the Asgardians, as well as the humans he knew would be attending such as Brynjar, Khadija, Hani. But then here was Lukas, a vendor he knew from the market, then Selma, from the library, Fredrik, a patron of your stall. It slowly dawned on him that he had a connection with nearly every hand he shook.
He was bidding his well wishes to Sigrid, the Æsir baker, when he heard Thor's tone change. It had shifted from his general jovial greeting to a boisterous exclamation. "Oh! Look at you! A vision!" Loki turned in time to see him wrapping someone in a hug, and when he heard your laughter bubbling out from the embrace his full attention was given to the scene. It took several frustrating seconds for his brother to finish speaking to you and move out of the damn way. Finally, Thor moved on to the next guest and you stepped forward and stood before Loki.
Loki was always reluctant to admit when Thor was right, but you truly were a vision. The dress was exquisite. The cut of it was unsurpassed, it flowed across your figure as if it were a part of you. What truly struck him, however, were the colors. Emerald greens patterned with deep blacks, trimmed and accented with gold. He had often dreamed of you dressed in his colors, but seeing it in reality--in this Asgardian style, no less--stirred something deeper than he expected. You were his, undoubtedly and without question.
"You should probably say something." You said quietly. He shook himself out of his awe, and smiled. "You look...." He struggled, there didn't seem to be a word that was suitable. "You look beautiful." You glanced up at his helm. "You're looking pretty spectacular yourself." He took your hand and brought it to his lips. "Welcome to the Midsummer Ball." "Thank you, your highness." Electricity spun along his spine. Something about your voice, seeing you dressed like that and speaking to him this way, was almost too much to bear. He kept hold of your hand, and found himself grateful that the layers of his armor would conceal just how much you were affecting him. The look in your eye said that you knew, regardless.
He then noticed your necklace, there resting on your collarbone was the pendant he had given you. The bird in flight, carved in green stone, but its plain black cord had been replaced. It was now set in scrolling gold wirework, which hugged the base of your neck. It was, just as the rest of your outfit, the perfect highlight to your features. He opened his mouth to comment on it when Valkyrie cut in.
"Alright, loverboy, let her go. We've got people waiting." You chuckled. He gently squeezed your hand, then released it. "I'll see you inside." You offered him one last smile before moving on.
He greeted the next citizen but surreptitiously watched you speaking to Valkyrie and walking into the hall. The dress accentuated everything about you that he most adored. He made a mental note to gift Elof a generous bonus of some sort.
Eventually the crowd dwindled, and Thor, Loki, and Valkyrie made their way inside as well. The hall was filled with eager conversation, drinks were already in hand but the revelers were waiting. Thor made his way to the dais, Loki and Valkyrie stood in their places behind him, on either side. Each of them were passed a goblet. Asbjorn's Asgardian liquor. The scent that wafted up was tantalizingly familiar, and yet still not quite recognizable. Loki searched the assembly, but couldn't find your face. No matter. He knew you were there.
Thor looked down at his cup and thanked Asbjorn for his work. He looked out over the crowd and the people grew silent.
"Kinsmen, neighbors, friends. I am so proud to be standing with you tonight. We should all be proud. Our journey has been a challenge. It has been a tragedy. We have experienced losses far beyond what any just universe would lay on our shoulders. And yet here we stand.
"We will never again be what we were. This is undeniable. It is our right to mourn our loss, and we do. We will always carry that with us, but our strength is such that we can carry that weight even while we build again. And we do this also.
"What we had is gone, and we are no longer what we once were. Let us drink to Asgard." He took a somber sip from his goblet, the crowd followed suit.
"This night, however, is about what we have. We have taken the fragments of ourselves and rearranged them. We have added new pieces, fashioned from our resilience, fashioned from the grace afforded to us by others. In doing so we have forged something entirely new. It is something no one could have imagined, something spectacular, but more than anything, it is something that is distinctly ours.
"This hall," he gestured with his cup to the building around him, "was built by the hands of men and Æsir alike. It is a testament to this novel life we are leading now. It's a symbol of what we've created. We arrived on this shore with nearly nothing, and we have built a place where we can be whoever it is that we are now. A singular achievement, unlike anything seen before. We will never again be what we were, but what we are now is something worthwhile.
"To speak to the heart of it; we have a home, we have allies, we have each other." Thor raised his goblet to the crowd. "Let us drink to New Asgard."
The celebrants raised their glasses and drank with their leader, then broke into applause.
Thor raised his hand and declared over the quieting congregation, "And let those be the last sober words I speak tonight!" The crowd erupted in cheers as he drained his goblet and threw the empty vessel to the ground. The room was an absolute roar of merriment.
Thor turned to Loki and shouted over the din. "How'd I do?" Loki clapped his brother on the back. "It wasn't a complete embarrassment." Thor laughed. "Thank you, brother." He then turned to receive congratulations from an approaching citizen.
Loki looked out into the crowd, searching for you again, but it became clear it would have to wait. People were coming forward to express their praises to him and Thor, others were pushing about, trying begin the festivities. The musicians were starting their first number, food was being served. He stood with Thor on the dais for quite some time, there were a few journalists to speak to and photos needed to be taken. Eventually, the excitement settled down into a comfortable baseline, there were no longer any immediate responsibilities for the princes, and Loki set off into the throng.
When he found you, you were entertaining a group of old warriors. One of them must have asked about your scar, because you were regaling them with a story about wrestling a sea serpent. You certainly knew your audience. Loki came and stood beside you, listening with pride. You received the appropriate amount of laughter and amiable admiration when your tale culminated in strangling the beast with your bare hands.
Loki stepped closer and placed a hand on your back. "I beg your pardon, gentlemen, but the music is playing, and I have not yet had the pleasure of a dance with the lady." "Aye, you better take her to the floor before I do." The rest agreed, you laughed, and took Loki's arm when he offered it.
The two of you reached the dance floor just as a new song was beginning. Loki took your hand in his, placed his other at your waist and you fell into form with your free hand on his shoulder. "A bit more space, this time." You noted. "You were divine while dodging furniture, I can't wait to see how much your skills improve without the hindrance." You had only enough time for a short laugh before the song started properly and he began leading you around the room.
At the start, your movements were nervous, as they had been those months ago in your kitchen. You kept your eyes down, watching your feet. And as he had those months ago in your kitchen, Loki took the opportunity to savor your presence unobstructed. Ultimately, though, he took pity on your nerves.
He leaned close and spoke low. "You were wise to keep me from seeing you in this dress before tonight." You took your eyes off the floor, finally looking to him. He continued. "Had I seen you like this in the privacy of your home, it's quite possible I would have torn it off you immediately." The corner of your mouth tilted upward. "I figured. Maybe I know you better than you know yourself?" "I'm open to the possibility." He raised his brows. "I expect there will be an opportunity for a private viewing later?" "I'm open to the possibility." You glanced up at his helm again. "Maybe if those horns are present." "That can certainly be arranged." He growled.
He noted that your steps had become more confident. He capitalized on it by pulling you close for a dip. You rewarded him with a laugh and a bright smile as he brought you back upright and continued sweeping you across the floor.
"Your necklace is very lovely." He observed. "But it hardly seems appropriate for everyday wear." Somehow, you saw right through him. "The pendant is removable. It'll be back on its cord tomorrow." He did his best not to appear overly-relieved. "Ah, the best of both worlds, then." You smiled. "I wanted a piece of you with me tonight, but I wouldn't give up having a piece of you with me every day." "You will always have a piece of me with you." He murmured. You sweetly kissed his cheek and kept time with his steps.
Loki found he was not satisfied with this. He was, quite suddenly, overwhelmed by how inadequate it felt. The song was drawing to its end, but he stopped short a few beats early. He pulled you close against him and drew you into a kiss. The way his lips sought yours was almost desperate, which went against reason. You were here and you were his. But then, that had not always been the case, had it? He needed you to know that anything else would be unacceptable for him. He kissed you with an urgent drive to make it clear that the world as it was in this instant was all he ever wanted. That it granted him all that he could have ever hoped for. He was breathless when he finally pulled back. Later, when Loki would look back on this moment, it would seem to him that you were the only person in the room, though of course he knew that could not be true. He watched as you breathed a contented sigh and when your eyes met his he knew that you understood. Every aching sentiment was reflected back to him in your expression.
He cupped your cheek in his hand and closed his eyes as his nose brushed against yours. "Thank you," he said quietly, "for the dance." "My pleasure." was your whispered response.
The both of you realized, simultaneously, that the next song was beginning, and quickly moved out of the way of the dancers. It was in that moment that Loki caught sight of Thor moving through the audience, searching. He pursed his lips.
Loki took both of your hands in his. "I'm afraid I must be off." "Oh?" "Yes." He looked up, scanning the crowd. "Thor is looking for Hani, and I absolutely cannot allow him to dance with her before I do." You laughed. "Of course not." You leaned toward him conspiratorially. "Last I saw her was by one of the dessert tables, but it's been a few minutes." "Excellent." He moved to step away but you grabbed his arm. "Which way did Thor go?" He gestured. "That direction. Why?" You smirked. "It occurred to me that I haven't congratulated him on his speech yet." "Oh, my love." He fondly squeezed your hand before the two of you set off in opposite directions.
**
Loki twirled Hani across the dance floor, and threw a grin to the glowering Thor on the sidelines. The girl giggled with every spin, and Loki even performed a few lifts, for good measure. His gloating was going quite well, until Thor traipsed onto the scene with you in his arms. Loki shot you a scandalized look but you only laughed as his brother spun you in exaggerated steps. "Oh, sister, you dance so well!" Thor practically shouted as he passed. "So light on your feet!" Loki responded by flourishing Hani away and back, accented by her delighted squeal. This led to Thor making more outrageous moves, of course. By the end of it Loki had gotten his seiðr involved, and Thor had more or less continuously carried you for several measures. Naturally, when the song ended, they traded partners.
After the dancing there was food and drink and then more dancing. There were stories and singing and then food again. In a moment of respite, Loki sat at a table with you and Valkyrie. There was such a variety of food at the banquet that it was impossible to sample it all, but you and Val were making a valiant effort.
"Bless Asbjorn and his kids." Valkyrie muttered as she took a swig of her drink. You smiled. "Tastes like home?" "It does now."
"SISTER!" Thor bellowed and fell into the chair beside you. He had clearly been making good use of Asbjorn's craft himself. "How are you enjoying the evening?" You looked thoroughly amused. "Not as much as you, it seems." "Ah! My brother needs to make himself more useful." He reached across you and shook Loki's shoulder, which Loki immediately brushed away. "He should be showing you the time of your life!" You laughed. "Don't worry, I am having a great night." "I am so very glad that you are here with us. Loki needs a soul like yours to keep him in check." Loki rolled his eyes while you suppressed a giggle. Thor raised a finger and leaned closer. "Did you know," he seemed to think he had lowered his voice, but reality begged to differ, "there was a time when my brother was certain you were a witch?" "Hah!" Valkyrie barked a laugh over her cup. "Oh, really?" You looked at Loki with raised brows and he knew immediately that he would be hearing of this for years to come. Thor nodded. "Indeed. A witch." "It was a passing theory." Loki muttered. "He was convinced!" Thor slapped the table. "He had evidence!" Your smirk was positively dangerous as you locked eyes with Loki. "Maybe he was right. Maybe I am a witch." Loki smoothly slid into a smirk of his own. "I would believe it," he lifted your hand and pressed a kiss to the back of it, "for I am enchanted." You bit your lip to keep your grin in check. "Ugh." Valkyrie stood. "I need another drink to deal with this." "Oh, a drink? I'll join you." Thor wandered after her.
The two of you left alone, you propped your chin in your hand, looking very pleased with yourself. "Evidence?" "Thor has had quite a lot to drink." "I didn't hear you deny it." "Well, darling, you are magical in many ways." You rolled your eyes. "Be that way. I'll get the truth eventually."
The festivities went on, and the two of you sat and spoke, eating and drinking here and there while music drifted from the other side of the room. Soon you both were on your feet again, greeting friends, watching the revelry, and it was never very long before Loki felt the need to dance with you again. Gradually, as the night continued, he noticed the usual clues in your expression here and there. Small signs that he had become familiar with, telling him your energy was waning. You were enjoying yourself, certainly, but perhaps a rest was in order.
He placed his hand on your back and leaned in to your ear. "Would you like to take a walk?" You responded with a nod and he led you through the open doors out the back of the hall.
The field had its own share of revelers, and there was still music, but it was far quieter out here in the open air. Nearby, a group of Æsir were attempting to teach a traditional drinking song to a group of humans. Both parties were so far from sobriety that they were all getting roughly the same number of words correct.
You had long since traded your formal shoes for a pair that were more practical, and likewise Loki's helm had been put away. Elof apparently knew you well enough that he had fashioned some type of button and loop mechanism that you could arrange to keep your skirt up and off the grass. You and Loki wandered out into the field and stopped a distance from the bonfires, simply standing and watching the flames for a while.
"What is it about bonfires?" You mused. "I imagine it's some sort of symbolism. Light, life, sun." "Hmm. I think they're just nice to look at." Loki couldn't really argue.
You stood and watched for a few minutes more, and when Loki turned and began walking you followed, tucking your arm into his. He led you away from the hall, into the quiet dark of the surrounding hills. The singing and the crackling fires fell away, muted by the night.
Loki glanced up at the sky. "Blueberries are coming into season, I imagine?" You grinned. "There's a new moon coming up." He smirked. "Well, tradition is important." "I couldn't agree more."
He had covertly led you to the road leading to your cottage, on the outside edge of New Asgard. You stopped, looking back toward the hall, the bonfires flickering in the distance.
"We should probably head back now, right?" His brows peaked with concern. "I was going to suggest, perhaps we should go home for a short rest." You frowned, looking to the hall again, but you were clearly conflicted by the proposal. "I don't know. I hate to miss anything." "The celebrations will go on all night. Tomorrow even." He gently turned you toward home. "What happened to 'had we but world enough?'" He chuckled. "Though we cannot make our sun stand still, yet we will make him run, my little bird. We'll come back and enjoy it some more. We have plenty of time." He urged you forward and you allowed it, walking with him along the road. Still, you had objections. "It's the shortest night of the year." "Yes, that may be true." He smiled softly and laced his fingers with yours. "But it also goes on forever."

CURSED!YUJI !!!✨💝✨!!! Please write more for him!!! Double teamed by normal yuji and cursed!yuji!!! Some thoughts even! Cursed!Sukuna as well!!!
Cursed!Yuji Thoughts SFW and NSFW
Cw/Tw — Mahito, sexualization, Depression
glad you like it! I’ll do more but here’s some quick thoughts for now. I’ll do some for Sukuna later.
Cursed!Yuji speaks nearly every language, why? He’s learned them all to consume more movies and games. What if people who’d like him are just waiting in another country?
He loves monster fuckers. He sees em and it kinda makes him feel like a sex god. Knowing most to all of them would be dying to be beneath him, and getting to know him.
He’s got a dirty mind and is a pervert. He spends most of his time online and there’s so much porn, so much fan service, the dirty jokes. He loves it all so when he sees someone in a skirt bend over he can’t help but imagine what’s underneath. He feels bad about it
Yuji and Sukuna are close. When they both curses I honestly see Sukuna taking the role of Wasuke. A father figure, an unc, grandpa, even a brother. They’re found family, blood sworn family too. They’ve only ever had each other and will always have each other. Secretly, in Sukuna’s kingdom, the web, Yuji is a prince of it. They rule together but Yuji’s role as a leader is kept secret per Yuji’s request.
Yuji dresses in shawls like Mahito does, and big sweaters. They’re the easiest things to wear and move around in, he’s got four arms so finding clothes is hard. Sometimes Yuji just takes Mahito’s clothes to wear. It’s a war of clothing stealing between those two.
Yuji and Mahito play Board games a lot. Those two are like Pokémon rivals to each other. Friendly competition and battles. They make stupidly complex home rules, and it’s best not to join games they’re playing together unless you want to lose right away.
Mahito is the one Yuji sends to get embarrassing things. Like posters of hot models, magazines, shipment orders, etc. Mahito finds it super funny, but Yuji finds ways to get back at him.
Yuji is a big cuddle and physical touch kind of guy. If you dating, him hands will be on your ass, groping your chest, down your pants, he’s touching you as often as possible. “You’re my personal porn star!”
He’s thought of making a mold of his dick and selling it as a sex toy line… who’s to say he hasn’t already tho. (Might use this for a fic)
Choso is often the one to pull Yuji out his room from bed rot sessions. Choso is trying to help Yuji feel alive and have connections, Choso still sees Yuji as a brother as well. Yuji is grateful for it honestly.
Yuji wants to go to a college and just walk around the campus and “attend” classes. Even if no one can see him, he wants to pretend to be apart of these people’s lives.
Yuji roleplays. Choso got him into it. He has three characters that he just fits into the settings he wants to do. One is a rockstar character who is kinda a self insert but his idealized version of himself, the second is basically John Wick but a werewolf, and the third is this crime lord kitsune fuck boy. Yep.
Yuji has a house. It’s one story, and pretty simple with some rustic designs to it. It used to belong to a couple, but they died. It’s where he took his last name from.
Sukuna is a curse from the heian era, he was sealed away however way back when. Yuji in modern day, accidentally unseals him and is the one to help him learn about the modern day. They’ve been living together for about 7 years. It’s only been these last two years when Sukuna started to make his web/kingdom, and Yuji started to spiral into his NEET depression era.
Yuji has a thing for really proper girls. Traditional values, quiet, fine pressed clothes, kimonos, minimal makeup, long hair, you get it. He might have a slight corruption kink cuz he loves the thought of gettin them all messy and dirty.

ever wonder why spotify/discord/teams desktop apps kind of suck?
i don't do a lot of long form posts but. I realized that so many people aren't aware that a lot of the enshittification of using computers in the past decade or so has a lot to do with embedded webapps becoming so frequently used instead of creating native programs. and boy do i have some thoughts about this.
for those who are not blessed/cursed with computers knowledge Basically most (graphical) programs used to be native programs (ever since we started widely using a graphical interface instead of just a text-based terminal). these are apps that feel like when you open up the settings on your computer, and one of the factors that make windows and mac programs look different (bc they use a different design language!) this was the standard for a long long time - your emails were served to you in a special email application like thunderbird or outlook, your documents were processed in something like microsoft word (again. On your own computer!). same goes for calendars, calculators, spreadsheets, and a whole bunch more - crucially, your computer didn't depend on the internet to do basic things, but being connected to the web was very much an appreciated luxury!
that leads us to the eventual rise of webapps that we are all so painfully familiar with today - gmail dot com/outlook, google docs, google/microsoft calendar, and so on. as html/css/js technology grew beyond just displaying text images and such, it became clear that it could be a lot more convenient to just run programs on some server somewhere, and serve the front end on a web interface for anyone to use. this is really very convenient!!!! it Also means a huge concentration of power (notice how suddenly google is one company providing you the SERVICE) - you're renting instead of owning. which means google is your landlord - the services you use every day are first and foremost means of hitting the year over year profit quota. its a pretty sweet deal to have a free email account in exchange for ads! email accounts used to be paid (simply because the provider had to store your emails somewhere. which takes up storage space which is physical hard drives), but now the standard as of hotmail/yahoo/gmail is to just provide a free service and shove ads in as much as you need to.
webapps can do a lot of things, but they didn't immediately replace software like skype or code editors or music players - software that requires more heavy system interaction or snappy audio/visual responses. in 2013, the electron framework came out - a way of packaging up a bundle of html/css/js into a neat little crossplatform application that could be downloaded and run like any other native application. there were significant upsides to this - web developers could suddenly use their webapp skills to build desktop applications that ran on any computer as long as it could support chrome*! the first applications to be built on electron were the late code editor atom (rest in peace), but soon a whole lot of companies took note! some notable contemporary applications that use electron, or a similar webapp-embedded-in-a-little-chrome as a base are:
microsoft teams
notion
vscode
discord
spotify
anyone! who has paid even a little bit of attention to their computer - especially when using older/budget computers - know just how much having chrome open can slow down your computer (firefox as well to a lesser extent. because its just built better <3)
whenever you have one of these programs open on your computer, it's running in a one-tab chrome browser. there is a whole extra chrome open just to run your discord. if you have discord, spotify, and notion open all at once, along with chrome itself, that's four chromes. needless to say, this uses a LOT of resources to deliver applications that are often much less polished and less integrated with the rest of the operating system. it also means that if you have no internet connection, sometimes the apps straight up do not work, since much of them rely heavily on being connected to their servers, where the heavy lifting is done.
taking this idea to the very furthest is the concept of chromebooks - dinky little laptops that were created to only run a web browser and webapps - simply a vessel to access the google dot com mothership. they have gotten better at running offline android/linux applications, but often the $200 chromebooks that are bought in bulk have almost no processing power of their own - why would you even need it? you have everything you could possibly need in the warm embrace of google!
all in all the average person in the modern age, using computers in the mainstream way, owns very little of their means of computing.
i started this post as a rant about the electron/webapp framework because i think that it sucks and it displaces proper programs. and now ive swiveled into getting pissed off at software services which is in honestly the core issue. and i think things can be better!!!!!!!!!!! but to think about better computing culture one has to imagine living outside of capitalism.
i'm not the one to try to explain permacomputing specifically because there's already wonderful literature ^ but if anything here interested you, read this!!!!!!!!!! there is a beautiful world where computers live for decades and do less but do it well. and you just own it. come frolic with me Okay ? :]
*when i say chrome i technically mean chromium. but functionally it's same thing

I rewatched your short about the superhero skin for jayce, and you bringing up iconic hero designs got me curious as to what your thoughts are about the character designs in something like my hero academia
(specifically I was thinking about all might but that might have something to do with the fact he’s probably my favorite)
I mean honestly, if I have a criticism of All Might it's that he sort of has the Superhero Jayce problem that his costume is more designed to be a visual parody/homage to western superhero costumes than it is designed to be All Might's costume.
So you've got the so-tight-you-can-count-his-abs spandex, the Superhero Boots, the bold colors, and visual signifiers of American-ness from his blonde hair and tanned skin to the red white and blue primary colors in his costume, right?
So all of this says to me "THIS IS AN AMERICAN SUPERHERO ARCHETYPE WHO IS AMERICAN FROM THE USA HOWDY HOWDY BANG BANG GUNS HOT DOGS AND OIL WARS", but what I feel is missing are all the themes and ideas that are specific to Toshinori - wanting to be a symbol of hope, a promise of a better tomorrow, the heroic spirit of being of service to other people... that's all a bit absent.
Those things come through way better in his depowered, emaciated form, and the ways that the contrast between the two is employed. It highlights the artifice and fragility of hero society, something which the story... well I've not read it since the raid on Chisaki's base so I dunno how well it's executed on the theme, but the story certainly seemed to have ambitions address the fakeness and fragility of the system of celebrity superheroes as "keepers of the peace" and All Might's two forms do a good job embodying the duality of that.
Hero society creates villains, there's a corrupting rot at the heart of it, and it's eating the symbol of peace from the inside out, and the "Symbol of Peace" is ultimately a false front projected by someone who cannot possibly sustain it. All of that works very well.
But his costume specifically? Eeeh. It doesn't really feel like a costume that was designed to be an iconic representation of the hero himself (think Super-Man's S, Spider-Man's webbed suit, Batman's black cowl and glowing eyes, etc), so much as a very broad, vague thematic statement for the story itself to work around - which is a perfectly good use of a character design, I just don't think it expresses the character wearing it as much as good superhero costumes usually do.
Again, I've not read MHA for a long time, so take my criticisms with a grain of salt, I might have a completely different take if I re-read it.

I never know what to say when people ask me what my day job is, bc i suppose the Professional answer would be "some unholy combination of social media manager/IT support/graphic & web design" but the most accurate answer would be something more akin to Mundane Advisor. Grand Vizier for Hippies. You see, years ago, my mother used to rent out rooms to tarot readers/acupuncturists/psychics/etc, and let me tell you something about new age-y types: absolutely fucking none of them know how to make a website. As a 12 year old with a drawing tablet and a homemade Weebly site about seagulls under my belt, I was already some kind of tech expert in their eyes, and earned a fair amount of pocket money throughout high school offering dirt-cheap website & logo design services. (Child labor or entrepreneurial spirit? Who's to say.) Years later, through the powerful force of word-of-mouth-advertising and the fact that the venn-diagram intersection between "people who know what an SSL certificate is" and "people who know what an oracle card is" is razor-thin, I find myself somehow still in this field, & spending my days composing emails to the tune of "Please, sire - I know your angels guided you to make this massive blurry stolen JPEG of a unicorn your homepage background, but might i suggest... not... that?" "Yes, Mistress, verily; I am sure your issues with Microsoft Edge may very well be due to mercury being in retrograde, but ah, just in case, I would also urge you to run a scan with an antivirus program." "I--sorry? I'm sorry, Good Lady, but the premise of your new business venture is... 'The concept of love'? Spreading awareness for the concept of love? I... alright. okay. might i suggest, gently, though I know you wish not to sully your divine vision with such mundane matters as 'financial viability,' that for the sake of the kingdom, we, ah - refine our scope, somewhat--"
