Researchers create machine learning model predicting long-term vision in high myopia patients, a top cause of irreversible blindness

In a study conducted by Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) researchers, a machine-learning model has been devised to foresee the future visual outcomes of individuals grappling with severe shortsightedness, scientifically termed high myopia.
This model aims to predict whether these individuals will experience positive or negative vision changes down the line.
High myopia, a condition characterized by the inability to focus on distant objects while maintaining clarity in close-range vision, poses a significant risk of irreversible blindness, making it a pressing global health concern. The research, recently featured in JAMA Ophthalmology, sought to harness the power of machine learning to forecast the likelihood of visual impairment over extended periods.
By scrutinizing data collected from nearly a thousand patients at Tokyo Medical and Dental University's Advanced Clinical Center for Myopia, the team embarked on a comprehensive analysis. They meticulously evaluated 34 key variables routinely recorded during ophthalmic examinations, encompassing factors like age, current visual acuity, and corneal diameter. Employing various machine-learning algorithms, including random forests and support vector machines, the researchers discovered that a logistic regression-based model exhibited the highest efficacy in predicting visual impairment at 3- and 5-year intervals.
Yet, the study didn't stop at predictive accuracy. Recognizing the importance of translating complex data into practical clinical insights, the researchers ingeniously crafted a nomogram. This graphical representation of the model's outcomes serves as a user-friendly tool for both clinicians and patients. Each variable's significance in predicting future visual acuity is visually depicted as a line, convertible into points that collectively signify the risk of impending visual impairment.
The implications of this research extend beyond its technical achievements. For individuals facing the dire consequences of vision loss, both financially and physically, this advancement could offer a beacon of hope. The global economic impact of severe visual impairment was estimated at a staggering USD 94.5 billion in 2019.
While further validation on a larger scale remains imperative, this study underscores the potential of machine-learning models in combating the escalating public health challenge posed by high myopia-induced sight loss.

In the course of the project, DIASTOR investigated 7 different high-end scanners with 8 different film stocks. In contrast to previous scanner studies, DIASTOR did not focus primarily on technical quality but rather aimed at studying the scanner–material interaction. The study was continued and completed in the research project FilmColors. An interdisciplinary Approach funded by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council.
To meet our goals, we devised several steps and areas of investigation with a variety of methods. These included: historical and physical analysis of film stocks; the technical data of the scanners; measurements and objective analyses of image quality (histograms, 1D and 2D Fourier transforms); subjective evaluation of results with a group of subjects; exploration of real-life applications, including the scanner operators’ background and the institutional framework of the scanners in operation.

I was just wondering, about Harry's "people like me" line, I know the whole message is about being queer and etc. but the thing that confuses me is that some people is pushing that he was once in the "working class" but isn't H quite "posh" before One-D? Right? I actually don't get the narratives people are pushing tbh, what can you say about it (genuinely asking)
Well in fact I don't think he does mean queer by that, and I don't think it would make any sense if he did, if he was saying queers never get to be famous pop stars! I think that would be extremely wrong if anyone said it, but the idea of Harry saying it is especially ludicrous given his interest in and knowledge of the incredible lineage of queer musicians he is a part of, such as the 70s rockers he takes so much of his aesthetic from like David Bowie, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, and all the other artists he pays tribute to in various ways through his outfits and show playlists and so on.
I do believe he means because he's just a regular working class guy from a small town in England who got lucky on a television show. And no, he wasn't posh before TXF. I feel like that's a narrative that comes partially from images pushed by the early 1D machinery and partially from some aspects of the way his accent sounds to non British people, but while his family was not in poverty or hungry, he absolutely did not belong to a class of people who could reasonably expect to have opportunities to find themselves on the grammys stage in California without a one in ten million arrangement of lucky chances. As someone who knows him and has seen him talk many times, it was heartwrenchingly apparent how overwhelmed he was in that moment, he was shaky and had no idea what to say or if he could manage to get it out before he started crying and so he reached for a familiar thing he says every night on stage, choked it out and got off the mic. But the people watching in this case weren't his adoring concert crowd and didn't know and love him or care about that and weren't thinking about him being from a boyband or a reality show and how much people might look down on him in the industry for that, and without context (and in the context of Beyonce being denied yet another AOTY award) it wasn't the best thing he could have said. I'm glad for him that he's free of the 1D managers trying to shut him up from behind every camera, but possibly he could benefit from consulting with experts a little bit here and there. In specific, given that his analysis around his privilege as a white person is, well, not very advanced, if he wants to avoid situations where he pisses people off just like this he should hire a person of color to consult him on such things, which is in fact a thing that some white people in positions where they say things publicly do to avoid saying things that come off very badly/ are offensive on account of just being a bit oblivious.

Hi! Sorry in advance that this is a bit of a long question! I’m fairly new to Larry (I fell down the rabbit hole a few months ago and am now hopelessly invested), but I’ve been reading everything I can to piece the story together myself. A lot of the established Larries I’ve seen have been pretty staunch to their belief that HL have been together beginning to end, but when I listen to the solo albums (Walls especially), I can’t help but feel there is a pretty conspicuous theme of splitting apart
and coming back together again: there’s “should’ve never let you go,” “I cut you off,” “I know you said that you'd give me another chance… mentally you were already out the door,” “I *was* better with you,” and “the day you walked away and took the higher ground,” from Walls, and also lines like “I know that you're tryna be friends” in Fine Line. These lines feel to me like they imply not just a rough patch, but an actual split. Not only that, but there is the video of Harry saying he wrote Two Ghosts “the first time he broke up with me” (unless this has been debunked and I totally missed it?) I’ve read your lyric analyses (which are incredible by the way, and I may have had a small emotional breakdown the other night while reading them — ESNY hits hard), and while it seems like you agree that these lyrics may allude to some kind of break happening, I’m really curious about what might have happened (and when it may have happened, if there was a breakup). To be clear, I firmly believe they are together now and whether or not they broke up doesn’t impact how I feel about them or their relationship, but I really don’t want to be the person that romanticizes their relationship and I *especially* don’t want to be the person that glosses over things just because they are painful or I don’t understand them, and the fact that a breakup really doesn’t fit in the timeline despite the above just keeps nudging me in the brain (hopefully that makes sense?). hello, kind anon! yeah this is one of those subjects that divides the fandom, ig, which is probably why you're having trouble finding answers. some ppl are adamant that they never broke up, others think they were apart for years, and yeah, i mean, we know nothing for sure, so either of those options could be true.
as is very clear from my blog, i love to base a lot of my convictions i have of them on their music. the stuff they themselves have written and put out, which contains so much truth maybe under a few veils of symbolism but we can work through those can't we. to give a quick answer to your question: i really don't have a firm idea of when a split might have happened.
and then i'll let myself loose a little and speculate, based on my obsessive reading of their music, some timelines here and there and my constant mulling over of anything they have ever done. their music, and then especially hs1, tells the story of a deep-rooted relationship suddenly going through changes in a way that has its members lose their footing (to put it super bluntly). my general idea about this is that they started having issues as soon as 1d ended, bc of the abrupt context shift, and them suddenly being forced to find a way through daily life without that dependence on the band's schedule. i don't mean their relationship was held together by the band, but i suspect that at some point they might have feared that. they lost sight of who they were supposed to be and it fucked with their brains. bad.
hs1 definitely mentions distance and separation, "you" being shut off, not calling, etc. so, to set my time frame super wide bc i genuinely don't have an idea, i'd say their main issues were very very active during the writing process of hs1 (which started pretty much after 1d). i do believe that h and l were in contact on and off throughout their break(s), though. their songs mention them taking time apart, and h waiting for l to be open, but there is always that baseline of being in touch, thinking about each other, loving one another okok ella don't get sappy yet save it for the end. and i also believe louis was there in jamaica for a brief period of time, while harry was making hs1. i don't mean everything was fixed by then, but they were def v happy at that point in time.
throughout the years, i think more of these ups and downs have happened, until hs1 finally got its reply in walls. louis took a while - and ofc walls was also written over the course of many years so i'm seeing this time frame very wide too - to come out into the hallway. hs1 has harry realising, slowly, what's wrong, and figuring out he needs to work on himself in order for the relationship to work, just like "you" has to. and he's just also sad about being lonely ofc, waiting for the other to come around. and then in walls, louis tells the story of an internal struggle he had to overcome to finally see what was in front of him, to finally be able to apologize and love properly. fine line, in my mind, fits in after this timeline, especially bc louis has made it clear that so much of walls was written long before its release, and simply bc the storyline makes most sense to me that harry is recounting their life after overcoming those major personal and relationship issues. by this i don't mean all of their problems are solved ofc bc in fine line there's still struggle but it's more on a personal level for harry and yk what i mean.
sooooo what's my conclusion. my view is that they struggled a LOT after 1d until hs1, then struggled some more but started talking, started working shit out properly, and during their semi-simultaneous polishing of fine line and walls, they reached that point where they could convincingly say they made it. fine line is just so full of gleeful, sappy love and walls is full of confidence and faith in their foundation as well as their future. bc hs1 still had that foundation, which we can hear the loudest in sweet creature - meaning they never gave up on each other - but in fine line the ecstasy of that love thriving is sung from the rooftops. and walls tells that entire story, to be honest. the struggle, the tenderness, the limitless dedication.
i hope this is.... somewhat of an okay answer that stills the mill of your mind trying to figure it out. i know this isn't really a straightforward answer, but i don't have one for myself either, and i've found i don't want one either. bc at the end of the day it doesn't matter, yk! they always loved each other, no matter what, and now they made it

A fascinating episode - some really strong and on point analysis of where they are at this point, and why this album is interesting and unexpected. But also quite revealing on the meta level.
They talk about Larry as a cultural phenomena early on and I liked what Nora said putting it in the context of wider fan stories and fantasies
But she also said that there was "a long and ugly history of conspiracy theories about gay relationships creating a connection between homosexual relationships and sneaking around and hiding bad things."
And I genuinely don't know what she's talking about - I don't know what history she's thinking of. But more importantly - every so often a certain sort of liberal argument will be put forward that basically amounts to: "People noticing the world is unjust is the problem actually". They're always brain meltingly terrible arguments. The problem is homophobia and the closet, not the people who have noticed that these things have existed. (I have many questions that I'd ask someone who tried to advance this argument to me in person - I think I'd start with Olly Alexander suggesting that because they wanted an out British gay actor with a high profile in his twenties for Richie, he knew there was no real competition for the part). There are good reasons for being really fucking careful about how you talk about celebrities and sexuality, particularly on podcasts with this sort of backing and reach.
But the idea that the reason that perceiving that homophobia exists and celebrities are closeted does harm is total bullshit. And I'm interested that it sounds credible to anyone.
And throughout this episode I thought again and again how in some way it's almost impossible to understand and talk about 1D, because 'Larry' becomes this weird black hole that it's impossible to properly navigate. I'll talk about this more in response to another ask, but they discuss both Rainbow Direction and #projectnocontrol, and miss really important aspects of their dynamics.
I think the problem with talking about 1D is that if you don't directly address that Larry Stylinson was a cultural phenomena then many things make absolutely no sense. But it's very difficult to discuss it as a cultural phenomena without immediately getting bogged down into questions of validity. And as soon as you're like 'are these people right?' you're not really coming from a place of curiosity.
I don't exempt from that - I think my understanding about 1D is hampered by my belief that Larries are both correct and include. But I do wonder why 'Larry' as a cultural phenomenon has this power. The popcast people were able to talk, not just about Taylor, but also about Kaylor, perfectly cogently.
And before I move on entirely from that train of thought. The absolute highlight of the episode for me was when they were discussing Peak Louis. They mention that Louis felt really sensitive to speculation about his sexuality, and suggests he might have written No Control in response to that speculation - to wear his heart on his sleeve. And in case it's not clear - they think that No Control was Louis exerting his heterosexuality. Which I absolutely love as a take. Imagine if it was true - hypothetically straight Louis putting all his feelings about heterosexual sex into a song, and this is what happens.
Anyway back to the actual podcast. They've touched on the controlling nature of fandom throughout the podcast, and I liked how explicit they got when it came to Zayn leaving. It hit hard for me, listening it on the back of the anon I got yesterday suggesting that some fans thought that Zayn was 'selfish' for smoking.
I loved that they talk about Lima's infamous fan service red carpet. I definitely disagree about peak Liam peak Liam at this period is watching some kind of political movie late at night and then tweeting about how some people don't have access to McDonalds. And I really disagree with them about the nature of Liam's responsibility at this stage. He's not really a caretaker, although he'll take care of people if that's supposed to be his job role. He's very focused on keeping people happy, and not breaking the rules.
Anyway I've got a few more asks where I'll discuss the podcast some more - so I'll stop here. I really love hearing people take 1D seriously and I can't wait to hear what they say about the solo albums. If anyone figured out how to listen to their live Coachella episode can you let me know.
Edited to Add: I forgot to mention that I love how much Nora hates Ed Sheeran. Obvious highlight her response to the question about Ed Sheeran's song 'Don't' was 'I would leave Ed Sheeran for Niall Horan any day the week'.

DREAMS DO COME TRUE and fanfics do come to life, how lucky are we? Seriously though, cooking show Louis AND footie Louis in one day, have we finally crossed out of the dark timeline and into some kind of blessed AU?! Louis is doing a COOKING SHOW (well, a little cooking video), and even better- it’s one of those things where he tries to recreate a recipe on his own for the camera! Full Time Meals is part of Marcus Rashford’s campaign to end child food insecurity in the UK. Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge makes easy meals from cheap ingredients for folks to follow along with, so Louis shouldn’t have too much trouble- good for him, though maybe not quite as entertaining for us, but this is one step closer to Celebrity Bake Off, keep dreaming big and crossing those fingers! Kerridge will post his recipe video on Sunday, and then Monday they’ll post Louis making the same thing. The preview pic is just long ass hair everywhere OMG. Put on a hairnet, hippie! NOT ONLY THAT I guess he is still at the studio, but hey that just means more video for us and not only that, today’s fan videos are of Louis kicking a football around- look at him GO!- with CHILDREN, goddddd. TOOO much, truly excellent.

He said, “lonely bug is my inner child,” there will be LB merch- “very limited toy drop might add clothes don’t know,” that the new song has “very very bright lyrics,” and said both that his knee is sore and that his knee is much better thanks, how very Liam.
And in a (these days rare for me) dip into fandom discourse, I see writer Kaitlyn Tiffany is back making the rounds of blogs for her book about the 1D fandom and how craaaazzzy larries are; BLOCK HER. Her tumblr url is kaittiffany (EDIT SJDKJFKS she has deleted since this morning OK THEN but she will be back again; I’m leaving this in for next time as we definitely haven’t seen the last of her, plus you know I went to all the trouble of writing it.) A book actually reporting on this complex and somewhat unique fandom objectively from a place of interest and curiosity would be fascinating and totally worthwhile… but sadly this REALLY ain’t it. She has made it clear she has no intention of actually writing about the intricacies of this fandom, only in finding material to bolster her already decided upon thesis about the ‘clinical paranoia’ and conspiracy theorizing of young women online. Her entire premise is based on her own preconceived bias, and she came here to find things to support her premise rather than coming up with it based on what she saw (not to mention it’s totally dated at this point, she really missed the cultural moment on that) and she has no interest in hearing what we have to say, only in pathologizing to support the sensationalist brief she probably got a publishing advance for and finding things to pull out of context to make her already decided on points. Anyway she wrote the intern- who had not blocked her to that account, oops- offering the ‘choice’ between one of our posts being quoted in her book with or without a name attached GEE THANKS SUCH GREAT OPTIONS; once she sees anything she wants to pull out of context, you can’t do anything about it (this is a public platform), so just block her so she doesn’t see it in the first place.
Hey but since we’re not getting an actual balanced book about the fandom maybe someone should write a companion book to hers analyzing the psychological phenomena of antis! Hey publishers, I can throw around buzz words too plus unlike her I know what I’m talking about as an actual member of this community, check it out: I propose an analysis in the aftermath of the Trump era of ‘othering’ in online spaces and how certain fandom groups operate as a socially acceptable entry level location of practice in demonizing a peer population which can act as a gateway to normalizing the othering of other cultures, races, etc. In this essay book I will address how fans experience peer validation and support to egg each other on in bullying other people because those people have been coded as Other and Wrong and because their community reinforces the idea that attacking other humans is Good Behavior and that normal constraints and ethics are suspended when people need to be Made to Understand the Righteous Truth and that any means justify that end, and how that carries over into non-fandom life and is dangerous as hell. Now THAT’S timely, DM for deets about where to send my advance!

Hi sorry this is kinda random but also this is something I love talking about so in advance apologies for this very long ask
Ok so I'm seeing you tweet out right now about someone talking about how dnf and Larry have some commonalities and while I was never into 1D I actually have a lot to say about this
I've been in the dsmp fandom since October 2020 but have only recently jumped ship to the dteam side, I used to main SBI and dteam was a special treat but for various reasons I've since left the SBI side
Anyways, all that aside. I love analyzing things and looking for patterns and understanding trends and topics
This fandom is chalk full of so much to overthink about but one of my favorite talking points has to be how it's the perfect marriage between rpf and media based fandoms but more interestingly, how certain people are more naturally drawn to one side
SBI people generally come from media based fandoms, anime (most notably MHA), undertale, fnaf, marvel
Meanwhile dteam people tend to come from rpf fandoms, k-pop, sports rpf and most notably 1D
Obviously there are exceptions to this trend but genuinely, most people follow this according to the people I've talked too and asked
It's really not that dnf is being weirdly similar to larry (the fandom, I can't comment on actual Larry) but rather that it's a lot of the same people who make it up or people who are very similar to larry fans that were maybe too young at the time
Honestly this whole analysis of mine actually is able to break down why and how the fandom got to the state it's in currently but at its core, it's because of this natural divide between media based fandoms and rpf
Anyways sorry this is long and pretty out of topic but I couldn't help myself lmao, I hope you got some enjoyment out of at least 😅
