A colleague who recently retired recommended this Red Bean Bread (S$3.50) from Wataa Bakery. This halal-certified confectionery is a franchise brand of homegrown Swee Heng Bakery. This fluffy yellow bread has a spiral of sweetened red beans embedded in the dough and sesame seeds on the outside. The bread is good on its own if not a wee bit sweet due to the sweetened beans.

Yokan (cooking)

Old canned red beans (190g). Dissolve 1 bag of gelatin (5 g) in 50 ccs of lukewarm water, pour in 10 g of sugar, adzuki beans, and a few cloves, mix evenly, cool, and make yokan. Harder than mizu-yokan.
Note: Cloves are great for flavoring.
羊羹(料理)
古くなってきた小豆の缶詰(190g)。処理したほうがいいので、ゼラチン1袋(5g)を50ccのぬるま湯に溶かし、砂糖10g、小豆、クローブ少々に流しいれ、均一にし、冷やして羊羹。水羊羹より固め。
注:クローブは、香り付けに最適。

Walked into BreadTalk (面包物语) to buy some buns for next day breakfast and saw this freshly baked Matcha Red Bean Loaf (S$4) on the shelf. The top of the bread is piped with dark green matcha paste which offered the familiar bitter taste of green tea. Bite into the vein of the earthy red beans and burst of mild nutty sweetness flood the cavity of the mouth. Together with the soft milk bread encompassing the bitter and sweet flavours, it makes for an enjoyable treat.

Azuki beans(red beans) are indispensable as an ingredient in Japanese sweets. "An(paste)" made from this material is the most important ingredient in various Japanese sweets. On the other hand, chocolate is used in important parts of Western sweets. It is a showdown between the king of Japanese confectionery and the king of Western confectionery. Now let's compare the nutritional value of the two.
