Winter Apocalypse
Chapter 53: After-party
Tumblr media
It would have been class time, but none of the kids were in class having some boring magic lesson. They were all lying in the garden, or locked in their common rooms. That day was a festive one, because the Intercontinental team would be performing that afternoon!
The big party in the Slytherin common room the previous night, however, had left its effects on the boys who had taken part.
Dennis, Aegon, Shireen, Rhea and Loras, with large shopping bags from Omega Mart in their hands, had just landed their flying brooms in the garden, in front of the large group of friends of which they were part, and of which they were the younger members.
Aston, dark circles under her eyes visible even under her dark blue sunglasses and a hand pressed to her pale forehead, had sent the three Ravenclaws and the two Slytherins on a bizarre shopping spree: bottled deodorant with the essence of whale vocal cords, extra virgin water without hydrogen dioxide, a whole pack of copper buttons, and they even had to stop by Undertaker's creepy shack to get some root he grew, embarrassingly big and bulbous and disgusting.
“What the fuck did you make us bring this crap here for?” Dennis began, very angry. It was cold that day, and he had to steal a long blue jacket with idiotic diamonds from his older brother, but it was so big that it trailed on the ground like a cloak over his shoulders. His shirt with holes in it and his trousers, with tears so wide that he had to wear a pair of tights underneath him so as not to appear to be in his underwear, did not hold up well to the cold of the Northern winter of Winter Hogwarts. But they were very fashionable!
Aston almost smiled at him, sitting on the outside window sill of Yi Ti's Astrology classroom, along with just a few of her group of friends - Seamus with his purple face and split nose, Cesaro with his glitter jacket on backwards, the Hardy brothers with bruises everywhere, Edge and Christian leaning on each other very tired, Emily who looked just a little less fresh than ever and, worst of all, Eddie and Riddle.
Eddie seemed more upset emotionally than physically, and Riddle the opposite. He was hunched over, his hands in his long blond hair and his gaze on the ground. Beric was by Aston's side as always but he didn't seem to have suffered anything from the previous night, probably because he hadn't been there.
Theon still had a bottle of butterbeer in his hand, and Renly had turned in disgust to see Theon still wanting to drink alcohol after getting too drunk the previous night, his braid all in disarray as if he hadn't even let his hair down and combed it- strange for him, who loved her long black hair so much.
Rhea, who was the strongest of the group of third and fourth years sent to refuel, was carrying two bags full of rubbish, and she also seemed the most nervous. "This stuff stinks." the Ulthos girl said angrily, wrinkling her nose and making a face with her black lipstick. Loras, impeccably dressed as usual with well-combed, soft light brown hair and a coat embroidered with golden roses that reached down to his knees, almost threw the bag towards the group, but no one caught it. She ended up in the snow, at Aston's feet. "Don't throw things! What if she ran into Aston? She would get hurt!" Beric shouted stiffly and annoyed at Loras, while Aston mimed giving him a slap. "Shut up, or I'll bury you upside down and ass up like Undertaker's chickens." she growled.
"Now you'll find out, right Aston?" Cesaro replied, sunny as always but with a crooked and tired smile. He had a cut on his bald head caused by a fall the day before, and he was holding a take-away coffee from Batista's Bar, which had been empty for some time now.
The four boys unloaded the stuff they had bought with Aston's money in front of the feet of the red-haired girl, who was wearing a short holographic diamond-patterned jacket trimmed with fur and heavy black jeans with a holographic border on the side as well, and boots with holographic diamonds like the jacket. It was strangely cold in Winter Hogwarts that day.
Aston grabbed her younger brother by the wrist, dragging him towards him.
"I'll explain it to you now, Denny, come here." and she violently made him sit on her legs, even though he seemed really against the matter. "You've grown up, huh?" said Aston, strangely condescending to her younger brother, with whom she almost always teased. Dennis, in fact, was not convinced. “What the fuck do you want from me?” he muttered unsurely.
Aston ruffled his hair, which had been dyed an annoyingly bright red that day, and before Dennis knew anything was wrong, she pulled out a lock of his hair. The boy jumped up screaming, both in pain and in fright.
"Your dye is based on Realgar, and is used in the potion." The older sister continued, as a very low-energy laugh arose from the hungover group.
"What potion?" Shireen asked, curious. She was a nerd, so as soon as we talked about new potions or magic that she didn't know, she forgot all the shyness that usually characterized her and became a little intrusive, even if in a tender way.

when i was a young teen and read ADWD back in 2014 my early gay heart was captivated by the tragedy of joncon’s love for rhaegar, but the wait for TWOW has been so long that i’ve had enough time to copy joncon myself and go through the same process of spending years obsessing over a twink friend who ultimately turned out to be straight. by the time it’s published i will probably be raising his son

Barristan Selmy had known many kings. He had been born during the troubled reign of Aegon the Unlikely, beloved by the common folk, had received his knighthood at his hands. Aegon's son Jaehaerys had bestowed the white cloak on him when he was three-and-twenty, after he slew Maelys the Monstrous during the War of the Ninepenny Kings. In that same cloak he had stood beside the Iron Throne as madness consumed Jaehaerys's son Aerys. Stood, and saw, and heard, and yet did nothing.
But no. That was not fair. He did his duty. Some nights, Ser Barristan wondered if he had not done that duty too well.

tbh i think it's so funny that the hotd changes are often commented as like, "team black is full of the bad gay gender bitches girlbossing their way into the patriarchal feudal system" because..... that's literally exactly what team Young Griff is in the main books everyone there is gay, every prospective member is gay, they're all the baddest bitches in westeros while everyone else is stuck with their gender roles

Assuming Aegon VI/Griff is a Blackfyre descendant, how many people actually know about this? It seems like Illyrio and Varys know, but does the entire Golden Company know as well? If so, how are they able to keep this hidden from him and JonCon so effectively? Also, do you have any predictions as to what Varys' motivation is for seating a Blackfyre on the iron throne?
What we've got is here:
Does he know? Griff wondered. How much did Myles tell him? Varys had been adamant about the need for secrecy. The plans that he and Illyrio had made with Blackheart had been known to them alone. The rest of the company had been left ignorant. The Lost Lord, ADWD
I strongly suspect that right from the start, Myles Toyne was aware of Aegon's ancestry. Shuffling JonCon away from the Golden Company immediately thereafter sharply limited the need to conceal anything from JonCon on a day-to-day basis and the opportunity for anything to go drastically awry on that front.
From the action in 'The Lost Lord', it's clear that Toyne told Strickland what he knew, and from there it was passed on to leadership. I suspect Strickland told them about Aegon's ancestry as part of that, in order to get the company's buy-in for breaking their contract with Myr and heading to Volantis - a very serious matter for them. I doubt it was widespread knowledge in the Golden Company beforehand.
I've talked a bit about what Varys and Illyrio want from this whole scheme recently here, and the upshot is that they're both using the Golden Company as well. I'd be very surprised if either were genuine Blackfyre loyalists.

Chapter 47: The Ravenclaw Mystery
Tumblr media
They followed him through the dark corridors of the Ravenclaw wing, where Jon had never been. The carpet beneath their feet was Blue Mammoth fur, a beautiful emerald color that paired well with the pure lapis and pyrite tiles on the walls. Ravenclaw was the richest of the four-now five-houses, though not as influential or interesting as Slytherin. Practically all the Ravenclaws were from very rich or very important families, and they all had a lot of fun and thought they were the best, in fact they got along very well with the Slytherins, and were twinned - almost like Gryffindor was allied with Hufflepuff.
At the paintings, pompous characters got angry and mocked Jon, laughing and pointing at him, because he was very poor.
"I saw your eyes, Jon Snow." said Professor Wilde, accompanying them through those corridors. The windows on the walls were very high and covered with drawings and instead of glass there were precious stones, the light that entered from them was a combination of many glitters caused by those precious stones, which also absorbed the dim winter light of Winter Hogwarts.
"What's wrong with my eyes?" he asked, confused.
"They're purple. And they never have been." continued Shireen, who was the nicest one there.
Ghost, still at Jon's side, held onto his legs so much that he almost fell to the ground. Even his eyes seemed purple now…
Professor Frankie Wilde took them into a room, the walls completely covered in tapestries depicting breathtaking and bloody war scenes, extremely violent and affecting the viewer even if they were only woven.
"There is a legend that tells of the son of the Dragon with purple eyes, with great powers…" began Professor Frankie, as the boys entered the classroom. Dennis pointed to a rainbow obsidian candle, its flame glowing with an intense purple light. "It's this one?"
"This candle lit just today, indicating that there are Dragon children here. And your eyes turned purple just today… it was originally believed that the Dragon was Rhaegar Targaryen, so one of his children was the infamous hero son of the Dragon. So he married a Dornish princess and had two children, but they weren't them…"
Frankie looked at Aegon.
“Yes,” said Aegon, “I am Rhaegar's biological son, but my sister Rhaenys and I were abandoned by our father because we were not worthy of the role of the Dragon's son, and then Jon Connington, his former fiancé, adopted us. But Rhaegar has been looking for a new wife - Lyanna Stark, and it is said that with her he could have fathered the Dragon child he wanted, but that he may be missing due to their constant travels for the team and the fact that they are very rich and commit."
"And you're a Stark, right?" Dennis asked.
Jon's eyes widened now deep purple, thinking back to his life as a motherless boy, when in fact he was just the lost son of the most beloved couple in all of Westeros… maybe?

How much do the Golden Company know about Aegon? There is reference to Illyrio's ever-changing plans, and there seems to have been a deal in place for a long time, given that it was Myles Toyne that had guaranteed Golden Company support. And yet, for all Illyrio's talk of contracts writ in blood, it would be stupid for him to let anyone at the Golden Company know Aegon isn't Rhaegar's son.
It certainly appears that the (for now theorized) truth of Aegon's Blackfyre heritage, with all the accompanying strategizing, has not trickled down to, say, the Tristan Rivers level:
"Which plan?" said Tristan Rivers. "The fat man's plan? The one that changes every time the moon turns? First Viserys Targaryen was to join us with fifty thousand Dothraki screamers at his back. Then the Beggar King was dead, and it was to be the sister, a pliable young child queen who was on her way to Pentos with three new-hatched dragons. Instead the girl turns up on Slaver's Bay and leaves a string of burning cities in her wake, and the fat man decides we should meet her by Volantis. Now that plan is in ruins as well.["]
That said, there was at least one member of the Golden Company who seems to have known the truth - Myles Toyne. Harry Strickland refers to Toyne entering into a "secret pact", a reference which aligns closely with Illyrio's teasing allusion to contracts writ in blood and Jon Connington's thought that "[t]he plans that he [i.e. Varys] and Illyrio had made with Blackheart had been known to them alone". Myles Toyne, scion of a family with a long history of resentment toward House Targaryen, himself perhaps having served in the Golden Company under the last of the Blackfyres, may well have figured a Blackfyre restoration would best serve him, his band of exiled Westerosi, and the spirit of the Golden Company; there was, at least, some personal motivation Myles appears to have had to agree to the Aegon plot with Illyrio. (Alas for Jon Connington, who therefore never suspected that his much-loved Myles was likely fighting to restore not his dead love Rhaegar's son but a descendant of the Black Dragon.)
Do I think Harry Strickland probably knows about Aegon being a Blackfyre? Yes. Strickland's knowledge of the existence of Toyne's "secret pact", coupled with Strickland's own longstanding familial loyalty to the Blackfyre cause and his position as the Golden Company's commander, all suggest to me that Harry is best positioned of anyone within the Golden Company to be entrusted with the knowledge that Aegon is, in whatever manner, descended from Daemon Blackfyre. If Illyrio needed the military support of the Golden Company, he may well have figured it was a necessity, if not a particular desire, to bring Strickland into the conspiracy. (Again, the secrecy emphasized by Varys to Jon Connington might have worked both ways here, keeping the Rhaegar-loyal Jon as much out of the Blackfyre loop as Jon himself thinks the Golden Company's men might have been toward Aegon-as-Rhaegar's-son; if Jon didn't need to know, Strickland certainly wasn't about to disillusion him.)
Do I think anyone else within the Golden Company necessarily knows? Eh, too little to say. The officer corps of the Golden Company certainly knew, before Jon Connington introduced the boy anyway, about our Aegon's cover story as Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar and Elia, but whether they understand this only to be a cover story is still unclear. There are any number in that officer corps who don't appear to have any ancestral connections to the Blackfyre cause (e.g. Lysono Maar, Black Balaq, or Gorys Edoryen), and still others who, while Westerosi, may or may not know or care about restoring the Blackfyres. I'm not saying any of these could or could not have been let in on the secret, only that there's too little, I think, to say right now.

I can't wait to see the reactions of all the Dany antis when Jon Con and Faegon burn KL or at least cause the destruction. Dany will still be in Essos raining fire and blood down on slavers while the antis their little hearts out.
