On this day, 29 April 1992, following the acquittal of the police officers caught on film brutally beating Rodney King, an unarmed Black motorist, riots erupted across Los Angeles in the biggest urban revolt since the 1960s. Public anger exploded after the acquittal, which was the last in a long line of egregious, brutal, and racist practices by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Officers would openly use racial slurs over police radios, and would terrorise residents of Black and Latine neighbourhoods. Newsweek reported that the rebellion was multiracial: "Hispanics and even some whites — men, women and children — mingled with African-Americans. The mob's primary lust appeared to be for property, not blood. In a fiesta mood, looters grabbed for expensive consumer goods that had suddenly become 'free'. Better-off Black as well as white and Asian-American business people all got burned." There was widespread expropriation of goods, which many participants felt was justified. One former gang member named Will told the International Herald Tribune: "A lot of people feel that it's reparations. It's what already belongs to us." LAPD, federal law enforcement personnel, National Guard and US Army troops were brought in to suppress the rebellion. By the time it was over, more than 60 people had been killed, 10 of them by law-enforcement, and property damage was estimated at over $1 billion. The Reserve Hotel and Casino, Henderson, 1998
The hotel-casino’s theme, designed by Henry Conversano, revolved around the concept of a fictional adventurer named Congo Jack, who had crashed his airplane in an African jungle, and was nursed back to health by Monsoon Mary. During The Reserve’s operation, actors had been hired to portray the characters, also created by Conversano.
Station Casinos purchased The Reserve two years later and reopened it as Fiesta Henderson. Fiesta closed in 2020.

Sleeping Beauty Spring: Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child – Sleeping Beauty" (1995 animated series episode)
Tumblr media
Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child was like an animated musical counterpart to Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre for children of the '90s. Each episode, narrated by Robert Guillaume, adapts a classic fairy tale or fantasy story with a star-studded voice cast, blending irreverent humor with sincerity. But what sets this series apart from any similar series is that each story takes place in a different culture. Highlight episodes include a Chinese Little Red Riding Hood, a Caribbean Goldilocks and the Three Bears, a Native American Snow White, African versions of Jack and the Beanstalk, The Frog Prince, and Beauty and the Beast, and Latin American versions of Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella... and Sleeping Beauty.
This retelling of the tale takes place in an imaginary Latin American seaside kingdom. The dialogue is peppered with Spanish words and phrases, and the voice cast consists entirely of Latino and part-Latino celebrities: Marie Barrientos as Princess Rosita, Ricardo Montalbán as King Carlos, Lucie Arnaz as Queen Maria, Paul Rodriguez as Jesse the Jester, Jacob Vargas as Prince Luis, Carlos Mencia as his squire Poncho, Carmen Zapata as the Seventh Fairy, Vanessa Marquez as all of the other six fairies, and musical theatre/opera singer Julia Migenes as the villainous fairy Evelina.
Apart from the Latin American setting, the plot faithfully follows the traditional story. King Carlos and Queen Maria yearn for a child, comforted only by the slapstick comedy of their clumsy jester, Jesse. But at last, Princess Rosita is born. To her grand christening – a fiesta with flamenco dancing, salsa music, and a feast of arroz con pollo and ropa vieja – the king and queen invite seven good fairies, portrayed as middle aged and elderly women with tiny wings. But the hideous old fairy Evelina goes uninvited because she shut herself away in a tower long ago and is presumed dead. Of course she comes anyway, and after expressing her offense a grand musical number, she curses the princess, but the pink-clad Seventh Fairy softens her curse from death to a hundred-year sleep.
Sixteen years later, as in the Cannon Movie Tales adaptation, the whole kingdom is dressed in rags and patches because no new cloth can be made without spinning wheels. Princess Rosita knows that spinning was banned due to an old prophecy, but doesn't know what that prophecy is. When her parents go out a tour of the kingdom, Jesse the Jester promises to look after her. But he promptly knocks himself unconscious on a column, so Rosita is free to explore unknown parts of the castle. Of course she finds a tower where Evelina waits with a spinning wheel. King Carlos, Queen Maria, and Jesse are distraught when they find Rosita sleeping, but the Seventh Fairy arrives and puts the rest of the kingdom to sleep too. Over a hundred years, a dense jungle grows around the castle.
At long last, Prince Luis and his nervous squire Poncho arrive. They've heard many legends about the old castle, but finally an old man tells them the true story. When they ride into the jungle, the trees miraculously part, and soon the prince finds Rosita and kisses her, breaking the spell. A fantastico wedding is celebrated with new clothes for everyone, Evelina "goes all to pieces" with rage (her tower explodes with her inside it, leaving just a smoking ruin), and everyone else lives happily ever after.
While the animation isn't the most sophisticated, its lively, colorful, stylized aesthetic is memorable and charming. It perfectly suits the balance between humor and heart that the script offers. As in most episodes of this series, there are two featured songs, the brief "Good Fairies' Song" and Evelina's "Que Es Esto" ("A party without me? Surely you jest-o!"), both infused with the local color of the setting.
I recommend not only this episode, but the entire Happily Ever After series to anyone who enjoys seeing fairy tales told with fresh, colorful new spins, and especially to children of different ethnic groups, who will enjoy seeing themselves in the classic tales.

Schools of Bentley 8 squad if they were real people
Angela and Lilith would have divided themselves into different coasts because they wanted to stay away from each other: Angela at Stanford (California) to study biology. Meanwhile, Lilith went to New York University to study Visual Arts. But they're still close with their boyfriends. Dustin enrolled at UC Berkeley to get closer to Angela, and Dirk went to Yale School of Medicine so he can keep in touch with Lilith.
But the JRO trio never got separated. Instead, they enrolled at the holy trinity colleges of Massachusetts: MIT for Johnny (You know, the equivalent of La Fiesta Tech) because he followed his Curious uncles' footsteps to be a scientist. Boston U for Ripp and he took the famous acting major, then Ophelia who went to Harvard to study English and African Studies.
Lastly, Puck transferred from Oxford to Princeton, because I imagine he's British. But he took the same double majors just like in Oxford: Mathematics and Music.

Why Does Diversity Matter When Choosing the Best Neighborhood?
Cultural and racial diversity are crucial factors to consider when determining the Best Neighborhood in Colorado. Diverse communities often bring a wider variety of perspectives, cultural experiences, and inclusive environments. While Durango is not as racially diverse as some other parts of Colorado, it still offers a blend of cultures that enrich the town’s social fabric.
For example, Durango hosts events like the Durango Celtic Festival and the Fiesta Days Parade, celebrating various cultural heritages that shape the town’s identity. Moreover, the Southern Ute Indian Tribe is a vital part of the community, contributing to the area’s cultural richness and historical significance.
Comparing Durango to Other Colorado Communities
When considering the Best Neighborhood in Colorado, it’s helpful to compare Durango’s demographics and overall lifestyle to other popular Colorado towns. For instance, Boulder, another highly sought-after destination in the state, has a more diverse racial composition, with a higher percentage of Asian and African American residents.
However, what sets Durango apart is its smaller population, which often translates to a greater sense of community and stronger connections between residents. People move to Durango for the lifestyle, including access to skiing, hiking, and exploring national parks like Mesa Verde.
Supporting Data on Colorado’s Demographics
To put Durango’s racial makeup into a broader context, Colorado as a whole has a more varied demographic profile. According to the U.S. Census, the racial composition of Colorado includes:
White: 67.9%
Hispanic or Latino: 21.7%
African American: 4.1%
Asian: 3.4%
Native American: 1.6%
While Durango may not be as diverse as the state average, it offers unique advantages that appeal to many seeking the Best Neighborhood in Colorado.
Conclusion: Is Durango Right for You?
Durango, Colorado, offers a unique lifestyle with its stunning natural beauty, active outdoor scene, and close-knit community. Though its racial makeup is less diverse than some other Colorado cities, it remains an inviting and vibrant town. If you’re looking for the Best Neighborhood in Colorado, Durango’s combination of outdoor adventure, cultural events, and family-friendly neighborhoods might just make it the perfect fit for you.
