He’s avoided you for a couple of weeks— or have you been avoiding him? Either way, there’s been this… disconnect with the two of you. A person he saw nearly every evening and weekend just… gone.

Suddenly a phantom, an enigma, the topic of conversation every night in the living room after dinner. He starts to avoid the living room after dinner.

Then suddenly you’re not.

You’re at his bedroom door, little sheepish smile on your face. If it were anyone else, he’d simply close the door, but he quirks a brow, looks down his nose at you. “It’s eleven pm.”

“I have a favour to ask.” You’re in a too-big Red Riot shirt, your hair done like you’re ready for bed, legs bare from the knee down.

He wants to scrunch his nose up at you, disallow you all of that space you take up in his brain, all of that extra thought you’ve been taking up for the past couple of weeks, the worry, the anxiety, the overthinking.

But a simple “what is it?” Leaves his lips.

You shrivel up a little then, maybe hoping he’d deny you. You’ve clearly been overthinking as well, bags under your eyes and the picking of cuticles indicating just as much, “I told my parents… that’s we’re dating.” You manage to get out, the guilt flooding your features.

This is about the wedding, about having a date, about feeling like you’re less than your pesky little sister. You want him to fill the void because he’s there?

“No.” He snaps. He can’t. He’s not pretending to be your little boyfriend, he’s no liar—

“You don’t even know what I’m asking.” You interrupt his thoughts, all bratty bravado he expects from you gone.

Just guilt; or… nerves?

“You’re asking me to pretend to be your boyfriend so you don’t look like a loser in front of your family—“

“No, I’m not! I’m—“ you take a breath. “I’m asking you to be my boyfriend. For real.”

He’s too tired for this. “Come inside.”

You follow, soft pad of socks on hardwood, your eyes roaming his bed, his desk, his bookshelf, his chest of drawers. His room’s clean— always meticulously so— but other people’s surprise always ruffles his feathers regardless; he doesn’t feel ruffled with your curiosity.

He sits at his desk chair, spins and gestures for you to take a seat on the edge of his bed. You hesitate, but sink into the memory foam, run fingers over the perfectly made sheets.

“Katsuki, you’re tired, right? We can talk in the morning.” You mumble, unable to look at him. Instead, your fingers seem more interesting, pushing the fabric of that too-big shirt down past your knees.

“No, you came to my door now, not in the morning. How are you gonna be able to sleep without sorting this out?” He huffs, wishing you wouldn’t wear Eiji’s old merch; the way the stretched out neck falls off your shoulder has his face heating.

“When did you become emotionally mature?” You mumble, probably hoping he doesn’t hear it.

“When did you decide you wanted to date me?” He fires back, annoyed. He’s allowed to be annoyed, it’s way past his bedtime, and you’ve rattled him a lot.

You huff, and when he looks back up at your face, you’re pouting.

Ah, the brat returns. “You.” Frowning, you sit there at the end of his bed, thinking way too hard. “You put the idea in my head, and you probably didn’t even mean it, but I just— I just— the day of the pool party, you—“

“Okay, okay, settle down.” Fuck, he did.

“No, I— don’t shush me, by the way, you know I hate that.” Your ankles link as you swing your feet, fingers scrunching in his duvet either side of your thighs, eyes downcast. “You were talking about this girl you love and… I got so jealous! And then all I could think about was her, and how you’d treat her, and the things you’d do with her, and… they’re things you do with me, Katsuki.” You come to the conclusion too easily, way too easily.

He swallows hard. “Really?”

“I don’t want you to give that attention to someone else; I’m selfish, probably, but I want you all to myself.” You meet his eyes— finally— your own watery, on the verge of spilling over. “I know you have someone you love, but I—”

“It’s you,” his voice comes out before his brain can properly process his train of thought, or your words, his heart hammering impatiently in his chest. “You’re— I’m— fuck,”

“Me?” You sniff, blinking tears back and wiping your eyes with your knuckles.

“You’re so stupid,” he falls back on, beyond embarrassed. “How can you say all that and think there’s someone else on the planet who I’d wanna be with?”

You actually start crying then, hands covering your face. “You’re so mean, Katsuki!” You frown at him, glare hot and wet and messy. “I’ve been so upset all this time, and all along you’ve liked me?” You accuse, his own embarrassment evaporating.

He chuckles, closing the gap between you and falling to his knees. “I guess you’re right for once,” he finds your calves, huge hands gripping them reassuringly as he looks up at you. “Why’re you being a crybaby?”

“I’m tired,” you lie, using the front of your shirt to wipe your face.

He laughs and rests his head on your thighs, butterflies going feral in his belly. They almost explode when you run fingers through his hair, when you tug at him to look up at you, then put your hands under his jaw, pulling him up even more.

“Do you really like me?” You ask, so close and so hopeful and so, so pretty.

If he could melt into a puddle, he would. “You really gonna make me say it again?” He asks, grumbling as you push his cheeks together.

Then you’re spreading your legs, slipping into the space between him and the bed, straddling his kneeling thighs. All he can do is swallow and stare as you knock your forehead to his, as you wrap your arms around him and press your lips to his nose.

“Is this okay?” You ask, resting your forehead on his shoulder, holding him close.

“Yeah,” he manages to croak out, tentatively touching at your back. “This is good.”

He relaxes into you, holds you closer, and you hum your content, nuzzling at his neck with a sweet sigh. It feels good— better than good, really— but his exhaustion is starting to win out; old man sleeping schedule be damned.

“Hey, uh, do you wanna sleep in here?” He asks, voice quiet, husky. “Not forcing you to—“

“Yeah…” you yawn. “But I’m boneless, so you’re gonna have’ta carry me.”

So he does, effortlessly lifting you like a baby koala, and walking you around to the side of the bed he doesn’t usually use. It’s kinda awkward, kinda surreal, but overall it’s warm.

Warm when you giggle as he tucks you in, as you chatter sleepily while he turns off the lights. Warm when he settles in to sleep next to you in his dark room, warm when your socked toes nudge him, when your fingers tug at his shirt, and you wordlessly snuggle against him.

If he wasn’t so damn tired, he’s sure he’d be more nervous, but he’s exhausted; so he simply holds you close, and drifts off to sleep.
