The Minnesota Twins did have their ace on the mound in RHP Pablo López so that should improve their chances. The Orioles sent RHP Abert Suárez to the mound for his 1st start in Major League Baseball since 2016 & 1st…

"I believe that the Universe is one being, all its parts are different expressions of the same energy, and they are all in communication with each other, therefore parts of one organic whole. (This is physics, I believe, as well as religion.) The parts change and pass, or die, people and races and rocks and stars, none of them seems to me important in itself, but only the whole. This whole is in all its parts so beautiful, and is felt by me to be so intensely in earnest, that I am compelled to love it and to think of it as divine. It seems to me that this whole alone is worthy of the deeper sort of love and there is peace, freedom, I might say a kind of salvation, in turning one's affections outward toward this one God, rather than inwards on one's self, or on humanity, or on human imaginations and abstractions — the world of spirits. I think it is our privilege and felicity to love God for his beauty, without claiming or expecting love from him. We are not important to him, but he to us."
—From a letter by poet Robinson Jeffers to Sister Mary James Power in October 1934; published in "The Wild God of the World : An Anthology of Robinson Jeffers" edited by Albert Gelpi (2003)

2023 Midyear Freakout Book Tag
It is time to look back to all of the books I've read for the past 6 months (!!!). I just want to do this for myself but anyone who wants to join, consider yourself tagged!
Best book you've read so far in 2023. This is a difficult one because I have never been not indecisive all my life. But. I think I will settle with No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai. I love how Dazai slowly working through Oba Yozo's mental deterioration. Obviously he's not likeable, but you'll be able to empathize with him from following the turbulence that is his mind. This book is the best way to show people the "ugly" side of mental illness. People need to realize that mental illness isn't only about the most instragammable things you can do, but it is also being the worst version of yourself. Other than that, how the narrative makes its way to connect to the title is cleverly done. It feels so seamless.
Best sequel you've read so far in 2023. I'm not a series reader, tbh. So I will go with The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You by Neil Gaiman. Although not my favorite of the series, I did enjoy reading that. In this volume, we meet Barbie! Turns out she's a princess some lifetime ago?? It's really interesting and surprisingly poignant.
Favourite re-read. Easy question, it's White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky. How is it still heartbreaking, even though I know what comes next in the story? That's Dostoevsky's specialty, I think. Making stories that's so painful no matter how much you reread it, it still gives you pain.
Genre you've been loving/reading the most. I've been having a lot of fun reading graphic novels this year so far! Reading graphic novels is the most magical form of experiencing work of literature. For fantasy especially, it feels like I forget I ever existed on Earth when reading them. Most of them are fast-paced and medium-paced so I'd recommend anyone to pick any title up if you want to read when waiting something, or not in the mood to digest books slowly.
New release you haven't read yet, but want to. Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova. It just came out last month so I still have a lot of time to read it. The summary sounds intriguing and I've seen a few of my book-ish friends wanting to read it too. Hopefully I can read that before the year ends!
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year. I don't have one, honestly. I'm not the type of person that follows news release that much, so yeah that's my answer.
Biggest disappointment. The Stranger - Albert Camus. I was so excited for this book. I have been saving that title since last year. Thank god I didn't buy the physical copy. Like, I get the book. But its' SO boring. I don't enjoy it.
Biggest surprise. Everyone in this Room Will Someday Be Dead by Emily Austin. Oh, this is an interesting one. Because I started this book last year impulsively, but then it was kinda rotting in my piles of CRs. But one day I decided, you know what, let's finished this book. And I was surprised that I like it. I even teared up a little at the end. I never thought it will be a profound book that shines light to what religious trauma can do to a person. The story is told in ironic and darkly humorous way, which is very funny if you're mentally ill. Yet it's also crushing, how the main character describe her despair. Such a marvelous read.
Favorite new author (debut/new to you). Oliver Jeffers. He's an author, illustrator for picture book fiction. Last year I read The Heart and The Bottle, which absolutely broke me to pieces, and this week I read What We'll Build and it makes me want to cry a river. So I'll definitely check out his other books.
Newest Favorite Character. Oh, God. I have two answer to this but I think I'll pick Jean-Baptiste Grenouille from Das Parfum for this one. Reason? Because he's a sopping wet little meow meow.
Book that made you cry. Uhh I don't know how it happened, but it's The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger got me sobbing???? The last part of the book, yeah. Just. I don't know. I'm just so fond of Holden Caulfield, I want to give him a hug, the best hug, making him soup if he's sick, staying all night if he want to talk, like I want to protect him at all cost.
Books that made you happy. My Beijing: Four Stories of Everyday Wonders by Nie Jun. It's free time travel to my childhood and free therapy. I need that child-like wonders and excitement dose if I want to survive this year.
Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year. Most of my reads are digital, but I'll mention Mamo by Sas Milledge as one of the most beautiful book I've read this year so far. The art style is so breathtaking. It added the whimsical story line even more alive.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year? So much books, so little time. I'll be happy with myself if I can manage to read any of Toni Morrison's books. I've been wanting to read her books but I'm just kinda intimidated lol.

“POLICE COURT NEWS,” Toronto Star. February 16, 1938. Page 31. ----- (No. 1 Court, Judge O’Connell, City Hall.) Still In Hospital Royal Leslie, charged with criminal negligence, was remanded to March 31. According to Crown Counsel Harold Sanders, complainant was still in hospital.
Ralph Sheppard pleaded guilty to theft of an automobile robe from a parked car, and was sent to jail for one month. He had been drinking, Sheppard admitted.
When Joseph Miller failed to appear to answer five charges of false pretences a bench warrant was ordered issued.
Miller was charged with obtaining coal from several firms and $55 in cash from a store.
James Archer, pleading guilty to theft of a vise, was remanded for sentence until to-morrow.
‘You need a few days to get the wine out of your system,’ Magistrate Browne commented., when Archer admitted he was ‘not sober.’
Leniency Refused Fred Forbes pleaded guilty to theft of a camera, two gold rings, a bracelet and $26 in cash, and was remanded until Friday for sentence.
‘Accused was employed at a hospital,’ stated Det. Albert Johns. ‘He took the articles and sold them. He said he had been waiting on a patient who’d given him wine. He admitted it all frankly.’
Accused admitted four previous convictions for theft, Forbes’ father appeared to plead for leniency.
‘I’m afraid not this time,’ the bench told the elderly man. ‘As long you keep paying up, he’s keep coming back.’ ---- ‘You have lost your job - that is punishment enough,’ said the bench to Jack Carlton, who admitted giving away a bag of coke when employed as a driver for a fuel company. Accused, charged with theft, was remanded for sentence.
Previously convicted of theft of oranges from a C.N.R. car on a west end siding, Rocco Vetere was sentenced to three months definite and six months indefinite, while Gordon Jeffers, Thomas Leyzac and Adam Murphy were given six months definite and six months indefinite, and John Cheyne, a first offender, was remanded for sentence.
‘I am a first offender, too,’ said Vetere. ‘Yes, but as bad as the rest. You may apply to the parole board, and I may help you,’ said his worship.
Boys Convicted Convicted of shopbreaking, Chas. Brittain, Howard Hyland and William Cilcus were remanded in custody for a week for sentence. The youthful trio pleaded not guilty to breaking into the plant of the Lake Shore Ice and Fuel Co.
David Little, owner, stated he had been called by police late at night to find a window had been broken and the door opened.
‘I saw three young men come out on a lane near the plant, but by the time I got to the scene, they had disappeared, ‘ said P.C. John Grose. ‘Later I brought the three accused to the station and cautioned them,’ testified Det. Wm. Matthews, ‘Hyland admitted breaking the window.’
‘Do you want to go in the box and say anything on your own behfalf?’ asked the bench.
‘I would rather speak from here,’ said Hyland from the dock.
‘You must be sworn to testify,’ ruled his worship. ‘I broke the window, but I didn’t go into the place. I had no intention of doing so,’ said Hy;and when sworn. ‘I am on probatuon now.’
‘So that’s why you didn’t want to go in the box. Don’t you know you can be sentenced on the old charge? What were you doing breaking windows? Why were you out at that hour of the night?’ questioned the magistrate.
‘Frame-Up’ Charged ‘I am not guilty and I am sure that if your worship heard my story I would not be held or sent to jail,’ said Yovan Yocich, charged with vagrancy. A remand of a week was requested by the crown. ‘Can’t I have bail?’ he asked.
Yocich was charged with refusing to work and gelecting his family. ‘The immigration people are interested in this case,’ said Crown Counsel W. Martin.
‘If your worship would let me explain,’ said Yocick. ‘I am a Serbian, here in Canada since 1914. I am married, but there is domestic trouble and some one wants to get rid of me. This is a frame-up to that end. I can provide $300 cash bail.’
‘You may have bail in that amount and you can tell your story next week,’ said Magistrate Jones.
Thomas Naldenoff, charged with conspiracy, was remanded a week.
William Gobis, charged with aggravated assault, was remanded a week with bail set at $1,000. ‘Accused is ill in bed and I have here a certificate from a city coroner to that effect,’ said counsel for Edward Dallimore, charged with taking bets.
‘I will issue a bench warrant but it will not be executed if the man is ill,’ said his worship. ---- MUST AVOID HOTEL --- (No. 3 Court, Magistrate Cowan, City Hall.) Vagrancy, by causing a disturbance in a hotel by swearing, shouting and being drunk, was the charge to which Janette Bell pleaded not guilty.
Wm. Moriaty, house detective, stated accused was taken from one of the upper floors. ‘She was being taken to the manager’s office and objected. She was shouting, swearing, and was drunk,’ he said.
His worship remarked there was no doubt the woman was a general nuisance around the place. ‘I am dismissing the case,’ he said to accused, ‘but I am warning you to stay away from this hotel. They don’t want you.’
A similar charge against Dorothy Goldhar, companion of Miss Bell, was withdrawn.
Ten days in jail was the sentence meted out to Thos. Kee, Chinese, convicted of committing an indecent act.
Edward Conway of Seaton St. is not the Edward Conway who appeared in police court a few days ago on a liquor charge. ---- CADI ACCEPTS STORY ---- (No. 4 Court, Magistrate Tinker, City Hall.) Arthur Parm entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of keeping liquor for sale, but guilty to permitting drunkenness.
Officers Donaldson and Scott said they found two men drinking in Parm’s home. ‘One told me he paid accused 40 cents for a quart of beer. We seized three quarts,’ said P.C. Scott.
‘I will accept the plea offered,’ ruled his worship and fined Parm $30 or 30 days.
Evidence against Kenneth Radeczy, charged with permitting drunkenness, was held insufficient by the court, and he was dismissed.

the bird is singing us an invitation to meet our future: A Workshop with Barby Asante.  Black Quantum Futures, Temporal Deprogramming, ICA London
25th August 2019
That bird is wise. Look. Its beak, back turned, picks For the present, what is best from ancient eyes, Then steps forward, on ahead To meet the future, undeterred.– Albert Kayper-Mensah Connecting fragments of memory, refusing the authority of the archival document, drawing from our streets, record collections and mythologies, Barby Asante invites you to join her to explore a reading of the Adinkra communicator, Sankofa, from a Black feminist perspective, thinking about the egg on the bird’s back and its potential for our imaginings of possible futures. Together with Barby, you will be invited to write a collective Declaration that will be recited as a ritual at three sites in and around the ICA. Please bring your memory fragments for inspiration.
