Re-reading Sherlock Holmes and it strikes me all over again that the main draw of this man is not his intelligence but his kindness and courteousness towards his distressed clients, most especially women. I was like ten when I read my Dad's copy of Adventures and so fascinated and attached to him immediately. It could never be replicated by modern interpretations, especially Moffat's Sherlock. *soul deep shudder* I hated the series from the get-go and couldn't figure out why until I saw that Tumblr post that pointed it out.
Also? Irene Adler's sexualisation is obviously gross and so much less progressive and agentive than the version this Victorian man wrote, but I'm also repulsed by the sexualisation of Sherlock Holmes. The man hasn't had a boner in his life. It's canon that he's never had any interest in women and his only close relationship with a man was Watson, and all power to slash fans, but there's absolutely nothing in canon that hints at anything but a friendship of, get this, mutual respect and admiration. This is the most aroace character in the English canon is what I'm saying, and the most generous interpretation of his relationship with Watson is a queerplatonic connection.
TL;DR: Perpetually flabbergasted how we got from a very gentlemanly, deeply compassionate, grown-ass adult who never talks down to Watson nor burdens anyone, to this entitled misogynistic manbaby with the social skills of a hornet.

I just love how humanity loves our detectives. Like,,, we're always playing with the classics, writing more, we just love solving things. David Suchet is THE Poirot, but we keep rerereadapting Agatha Christie's stories, because we wanna keep playing with this concept, try to figure out what was really making the culprit tick. The sheer number of Sherlock Holmes adaptations is overwhelming!!!! Both in film and book! We made him modern! We made him modern and American!! We gave him another sibling! (Ps my favorite book adaptations are by Laurie King (old man Sherlock solves crime) and Kareem Abdul Jabbar (more focused on Mycroft)). tbh this is why I think we keep redoing Batman movies! We just can't seem to get this funky emo detective man quite right!!!
Anyways, everyone should read more mysteries bc apparently as humans we're obsessed
Also if you need book recs,,,,, uhhhh I know someone (spoiler, it's me)

If YOU!! Yes you!! If you love mystery games (like prof. Layton), Sherlock, Titanic, Welcome Home, literally anything from the 1860s-1930s, you are going to LOVE (or at least like) this little web-based story I’m working on!!
It’s called Dear Clarent, and it’s a silly mystery investigating a shipwreck from 1914. Yes, it is very much interactive!! There are lots of password/cipher protected links, documents, audio, etc :)
Also, all of the artwork on the site is made by me (so far), so supporting the site means supporting an emerging artist!
We have a funny mascot too if you love silly little guys btw <3

Your personal top 5 Agatha Christie mysteries? I'm considering to start a reread and got curious as to which of her stories others prefer.
What a great question! I don't keep such a mental list, so this will be unscientific. In no particular order:
After the Funeral. I particularly enjoy rereading this one for the way that the clues are layered and the characterization is done.
Murder in Mesopotamia. This one I like partly because we have a no-nonsense, unsentimental, and somewhat less than perceptive narrator to introduce us to all the wild personalities.
The Hollow. A pattern is emerging here, which is that I like claustrophobic dramas with lots of detail about interpersonal relationships. I particularly enjoy the subplot about Midge, for whom murder takes a back seat to worries about love and money.
The Man in the Brown Suit. This one I enjoy simply because it is Agatha Christie having fun with an unhinged 1920s adventure story.
The Tuesday Night Club. This may be cheating because it's a short story collection, but I enjoy it: a smart, atmospheric collection that shows both a range of micro-genres and a range of interesting characters gathered around Miss Marple's fireplace.

Writeblr Intro
Hi everyone! I’ve had a writeblr blog before, but I’m trying to get published now, so I thought it better to make a new blog with my pen name rather than my real one. I love ask games and tag games, and feel free to interact with this post if you want me to check out your Writeblr!
Tumblr media
About my writing:
I write mostly fantasy, but I’m dipping my toes into mystery. (Obviously there’s still magic!)
I also generally include anti-capitalist save-the-earth type of themes, not as a main plot, but interspersed into the world.
My stories tend to be character-driven, and relationship driven. Not romance necessarily, but familial and friend relationships too.
About me:
My pen name that you can call me here is Lyra Vale. I’m 24 and I live in Missouri, USA. I’m non-binary (any pronouns are fine), and I’m the parent to an awesome 1 year old boy. I love reading, watching TV (my favorite shows are Steven Universe and Supernatural.), painting, journaling, and intensely planning and goal-setting. I’m rarely ever very far from a glass of sweet tea, and I like to draw or paint my characters sometimes.
I’ve been writing ever since I was a little kid, but my childhood home was burned down in an accidental fire when I was a teenager and I lost all my old writing. It took me a long time to heal enough to begin writing again, but now I want to publish my stories. I’m done being a cog in the capitalist machine (if only it were so easy to escape) and my lovely spouse agreed that I could try to make writing work as a career and quit my crappy service industry job that I had before. I’m chronically ill so as you can imagine, quitting instantly gave me tons of energy for writing.
Anyway, I’ll stop oversharing now…
WIPs:
Odd Token:
fantasy setting, but mystery genre;
(I’m very early in the planning stages, so I will come back and update this when I have more.)
