Thoughts : Movies I’ve Missed Out On

Not to toot my own horn, but quite often, I marvel at the sheer volume of films I have seen in my life.  Be they color or black and white, live action or animated, action or drama, comedy or horror, Hollywood or foreign, big budget or independent, old school or new school, I’ve covered a wide breadth of films in my years.  That being said, the only thing that surprises me more than the quantity of what I’ve seen are the random films that I’ve missed, ignored or completely overlooked.

In an effort to possibly find more films I may have overlooked, I will share groups of films on occasion that apparently everyone except myself has seen.  As always, if you want to recommend films, please message or use the Ask Me Anything tool.  Here are a handful to start off with, and I will share more films in the future.

Heat (dir. Michael Mann, 1995)

This is the film that was the inspiration for the list.  With the sheer volume of star power found in this film, it inevitably comes up in most every conversation I have about movies, especially the period of ‘cool’ films from the 1990s.  I’ve heard all about the amazing gunfight, and I’ve even queued this film up for review on the blog, but for whatever reason, the stars never align for a proper viewing.  As a Pacino, Deniro and Kilmer fan, this one is extremely high on my list.

Pan’s Labyrinth (dir. Guillermo del Toro, 2006) 

The buzz that surrounded this film when it first hit was monumental, but at the time, I was reeling from a few bad experiences at horror films that made me realize the tide was shifting for that genre.  With gore becoming the key feature of the genre, I found myself avoiding many ‘scary’ films, and as a result, Pan’s Labyrinth got shelved in the resources of my mind.  I’ve since become a big fan of the work of Guillermo del Toro, and I’d even seen The Orphanage before Pan’s Labyrinth was ever released, so I think I owe myself a viewing of this one.

Shutter Island (dir. Martin Scorsese, 2010)

Another situation where the work of a director and actor I love took a backseat to my hesitation to jump into modern-day horror.  Leo was on a major rise at the time, and headed towards finally getting awards recognition (which we will get to), and Scorsese was always tops on my list, but that trepidation for horror trumped my fascination with the mind that had this movie calling my name.  As a completest, I will need to see this to satisfy my Scorsese cravings, so I imagine I will be checking this one out sooner than later.

The Revenant (dir. Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2015)

After the mind-blowing film that was Birdman, I was completely on board for whatever Alejandro González Iñárritu had in store next, but the notoriety around this movie hit a fever pitch quickly, specifically due to the infamous bear attack scene.  The fact that Leo finally got an award for this film means that I will have to give it its just due, but man, I don’t know if I’m ready for the supposed level of realism that’s in store for me.

Spring Breakers (dir. Harmony Korine, 2012)

Other than negligence on my part, I have no good reason for having not seen Spring Breakers yet.  I’ve been down with Harmony Korine for ages, and the premise to this movie seems bonkers.  I’ve heard nothing but good stuff about it, and with such a notorious cast, as well as a madman behind the lens, I really need to get myself straight and sit down for this slice of wildness.

Gone Girl (dir. David Fincher, 2014)

Much like Heat, this modern day Fincher classic comes up in conversation avenues, as well as analysis ones, quite often.  In a time where the dynamics of male/female hierarchy are being put into question more than ever, and with a breakdown of how ‘male gaze’ has dominated cinema forcing a changing tide, Gone Girl certainly feels like must-see material.  Fincher has an iconic track record as well, so much like Spring Breakers, I really do not have a sound reason for having not seen this, but I plan to remedy that sooner than later.

With so many films in existence, I learn about new ones that I’ve overlooked on a nearly daily basis.  I will continue to share this films with you, and I will continue to share my thoughts on them once I view them, so hopefully, you all continue to follow!

#mexican director/genius #alejandrogonzalezinarritu is this week's #mcm, and he's been a favorite of mine for a while. I first heard of him when I was just beginning to explore foreign films around fifteen years ago, and #amoresperros kept coming up as a great #spanish language film on Best Of lists everywhere. Then came the amazing, harrowing and tense films #21grams and #babel. Babel especially had a profound effect on me, as it's a movie all about the characters' failures in communicating with each other and the world around them, and how destructive that can be. His most recent films can't be more different from each other: #birdman and #therevenant, which earned Inarritu and #leonardodicaprio #academyaward wins! Even the relative levity of Birdman masks a certain anxious drama present in all of Inarritu's films, about harsh turning points in his characters' lives. He's a great storyteller and one of the best filmmakers of the last twenty years! I can't wait to see what he does next. #oscars
