“Only $3,000 Recovered By Police of $12,000 Stolen in Transcona Bank Holdup,” Winnipeg Tribune. October 29, 1930. Page 4. ---- Although the squad working under the direction of Chief of Detectives George Smith, by excellent work and a fair amount of good luck. managed to speedily round up three of the men who are alleged to have staged the daring holdup and os caped with approximately $12.000 from the Bank of Toronto at Transcona, on the morning of October 16, there has been little success in rounding up the loot. 

Up to the present some $3,000 has been recovered from seven persons Police say a fourth man took part in the raid. They are convinced they will catch him and if they do they believe they will also get most of the $2,000 still missing

Herman Returned $2.212 The story of where the $3,000 was recovered was told in police court Tuesday during the preliminary hearing of Joe Wyrozub, Leslie Gwynn and John Pawuk who charged with robbery while armed. The largest sum recovered was returned by Herman after he had confessed his part in the bank raid. He took police to his home at 517 Alfred ave, returned $2.212 In Bank of Toronto and Dominion of Canada bills. He also accounted for $200, the balance of his share of the loot which he had used to pay accounts owing at local stores.

The balance of the money which police believe made up part of the bandit's haul was recovered in driblets. Fred Preston, taxi driver, had $215 which he said was given to him by Wyrozub Nick Andrysyn, of Charleswood, had $45 which he said had been found in the house occupied by Wyrezub at 103 MacDonald street.

Found at His Home Herbert E. Bennett, who face a charge of receiving stolen money. had $145 which he stated was left in his room, at Suite 5, Sanderson block, by Herman John Pawuk, alias Christy, had $317 in his possession when arrested, but police have no evidence this was stolen money, beyond the statement of Herman. who said he gave Pawuk $300 of the leot. Another $10 was recovered in the home of Alex Kestnyk, 182 Higgins ave, where Gwynn was alleged to have been living. At East Selkirk, in the home of Jim Wyrezub police found $70 which they took possession of.

Harry Herman was first to be arrested. He was found by detectives home about 8 pm. on Oct. 16. day of the hold-up. After he confessed it was not long before the others were taken into custody. Fred Preston was arrested in a Main st enfe the same evening. Wyrozub and his wife were picked up at 103 MacDonald st. a few hours later, and the same address at 8 am the next Gwynn was taken when he visited

River Was Dragged Herbert E. Bennett was brought in from his site in the Sanderson block on Oct. 19, and the same night John Pawuk, alias Christal, and his brother, Harry Christul. were arrested as they sat in an auto at the corner of Portage ave. and Main. Nick Andrysyn and Windika were brought in three days later.

Chief of Detectives George Smith said that Pawuk when questioned about the bag he had taken from Bennett's room, at first denied he had seen it. Later he stated he and his brother had thrown it in the Red river from Norwood bridge. The bag contained money, guts and ever alla When asked why he threw the guns in the river when they were his own guns he made no reply. He later went with detectives and showed them the spot where he was supposed to have thrown the bag. The river was dragged but nothing was found.

Silver Hidden in Stacking Miss Grace McWilliams, cashier in a local store, told of Herman paying 8000 on his account on Oct. 16 the day of the robbery.

Bennett showed detectives where $45 in silver was hidden in an old stocking among some rubbish in the hallway of the Sanderson block rene more silver was hidden behind a pipe in the bathroom, said Detective-Sergeant Craig. Detective Sergeant Craig found another $100 in the same bathrooms.

Bill Wiadika said he found $45 in the bathroom of the house he lived in at 103 MacDonald ave, which was also Joe Wyrozub's address. He found this money the day after the bank robbery and gave it all to Nick Andrys Andrysyn said he spent $10 of it and the police recovered the rest when he was arrested.

Synopsis

After six years of being Batman, Terry McGinnis has finally put his arch enemy Blight in prison. Life has not gotten better after college. A new villain known as Wrath has been taking over gangs and has threatened the new Batman. He is stronger, faster, and smarter than Terry. This is a challenge that Terry and Bruce will need to face together.

Characters

Terry McGinnis/Batman - A young man who has taken on the Batman mantle from his predecessor Bruce Wayne. He has fought criminals and villains such as the Jokerz, Blight, and Inque.

Bruce Wayne - The original Batman who retired when he was no longer physically capable. He trained Terry McGinnis and supplied him with technology to help fight crime.

Maxine "Max" Gibson - Terry's best friend and ally.

Dana Tan - Terry's longtime girlfriend.

Matt McGinnis - Terry's younger brother with a knack for gadgetry.

Barbara Gordon - The original Batgirl. She is now commissioner of the Neo-Gotham City Police Department. Also, she is married to district attorney Sam Young Sr. and they have a son, Sam Jr.

John Stacy - An old friend of Bruce Wayne that was put in charge of Wayne-Powers after Preston Powers (Blight's son) was imprisoned.

William Cobb/Wrath - A former Talon for the Court of Owls. He fought the original Batman and was believed to have died when the underground headquarters of the Court had collapsed. Instead, he was trapped in suspended animation in the rubble. After city workers came across him, he was awoken and discovered that it was now the future and the Court of Owls was defunct. To get revenge on Batman, he plotted to destroy Neo-Gotham and rebuild it to its former glory under the alias Wrath. He now wears armor based on the new Batman's suit, but has made more lethal upgrades.

Sam Young Jr./Anarky - The son of Commissioner Barbara Gordon and District Attorney Sam Young Sr. He makes protests under his alias of "Anarky." His parents would not be too proud that he supports the actions of Wrath.

Other Information

The events of the Batman Beyond TV series have occurred, but this is in another universe. I will not refer to events in the comics because I'm not able to read them.

I cannot get over how much media there was of Named Investigators in the 30s-40s. I just watched one with some guy called... shit I can't remember now, they all run together after a while. The Shadow, The Falcon, The uh. The Guy

But this one particular film was good for other reasons: it showed me a period-typical bar with period-typical Bar Behavior and some Rich People Nonsense, which is all important for what I'm writing. At one point there was a weird costume party. The theme was Surrealism. The main character gets in by ripping flowering branches off of a tree and entering the door as Primeval Spring. His romantic foil came to the party wearing a... rose mask? As in a WHOLE FUCKING BALL of roses around her entire head. You couldn't see her face or hair. She was just enveloped. It was legitimately creepy. As in, if I saw that thing coming toward me in Silent Hill, I would be like: ah yes, Roseface. She will beat me to death with her roseface

Yesterday I watched a film called Three Husbands from 193-whatever. Some old British rake kicks the bucket and as part of his last will and testament leaves a letter to each of his friends claiming to be boinking each of their wives. The film is framed by the rake telling the story up in heaven. Three divorces nearly happen because of this guy and the marriages come back together for absolutely no reason that I understand. This movie was sold as a comedy and begins and ends with angels laughing their asses off.

"Why isn't god sending him to hell" was my first question. My next question was, "why not send them all to hell while you're at it" because the characters were all so terrible. Well. All of them except for the Lucy proxy. She was pretty great. She'd do things like bet on horses and belch. Every time I see a woman in an old film who isn't a demure little housewife I get excited.

I tried watching Please Murder Me!, which featured Angela Lansbury and Perry Mason, but unfortunately, the title was the only good part.

Alias John Preston was also enjoyed. It features a very young Saruman (Christopher Lee). Lee's performance is excellent and he perfectly illustrates PTSD. I was deeply impressed. The movie itself is a huge letdown. It builds and builds and builds anddddd sputters out.

I fell way behind on NaNoWriMo so I should work on that today. I'm reinstating a human schedule. I shall be so very human. I decided to treat myself to Horny Gay Man section. God it's a fun section.

Also, I got four more African dwarf frogs from that breeder. I was worried for a sec that Auntie (the oldest frog, The Frog Who Lived) had perished, but she showed up last night and ate some plankton. Still no sign of Mr. Murder. I'm so frightened that I may have accidentally killed him during the move.

The Witches of Pendle Forest

The substance of the examinations of the so called witches and others, may be given as follows: Old Demdike persuaded her daughter, Elizabeth Device, to sell herself to the devil, which she did, and in turn initiated her daughter, Alison Device, in these infernal arts.

Amongst the rest of the voluntary confessions made by the witches, that of Dame Demdike is preserved.

She confessed that, about twenty years ago, as she was coming home from begging, she was met near Gouldshey, in the Forest of Pendle, by a spirit of devil in the shape of a boy, the one half of his coat black and the other brown, who told her to stop and said that if she would give him her soul, she would have anything she wished for.

She asked his name, and was told 'Tib'. She consented, from the hope of gain, to give him her soul.

For several years she had no occasion to make any application to her evil spirit; but one Sunday morning, having a little child upon her knee, and she being in a slumber, the spirit appeared to he in the likeness of a brown dog., and forced himself upon her knee, and begun to suck blood under her left arm, on which she exclaimed, 'Jesus! Save me!' and the brown dog vanished, leaving her almost stark mad for eight weeks.

On another occasion she was led, being blind, to the house of Richard Baldwin, to obtain payment for the services her daughter had performed at his mill, when Baldwin fell into a passion, and bid them to get off his ground, calling them 'whores and witches' and saying he would burn the one and hang the other.

On this, Tib appeared, and they concerted matters to revenge themselves on Baldwin; how, is not stated.

The Witches of Pendle Forest

The wild and desolate parts of the parish of Whalley furnished a fitting scene for witch assemblies, and it was alleged that such meetings were held at Malkin Tower, in Pendle Forest, within that parish.

The Justices of the peace in this part of the country, Roger Nowell and Nicholas Bannister, having learned that Malkin Tower, the residence of Old Demdike and her daughter, was the resort of the witches, ventured to arrest their head and another of her followers, and to commit them to Lancaster Castle.

When the old witch had been sent to Lancaster, a grand convocation of seventeen witches and three wizards was held at Malkin Tower on Good Friday, at which it was determined to kill Mr. M'Covell, the governor of the castle, and blow up the building, to enable the witches to make their escape.

The other two objects of this convocation were to christen the familiar of Alison Device, one of the witches in the castle, and also to bewitch and murder Mr. Lister, a gentleman of Westby-in-Craven, Yorkshire.

The business being ended, the witches, in quitting the meeting, walked out of the barn, named Malkin Tower, in their proper shapes, but on reaching the door, each mounted his or her spirit, which was in the form of a young horse, and quickly vanished.

Before the assizes, Old Demdike, worn out by age and trouble, died in prison. The others were brought to trial.

The Witchcraft of Chattox

The first person arraigned before Sir Edward Bromley, who presided in the criminal court, was Ann Whittle, alias 'Chattox'.

Her abode was in the Forest of Pendle, amongst the company of other witches, where the woollen trade was carried on, she having been in her younger days a wool-carder.

She was indicted for having exercised various wicked and devilish arts called witchcrafts, enchantments, charms and sorceries, upon one Robert Nutter, of Greenhead, in the Forest of Pendle, and with having, by force thereof, feloniously killed him.

To establish this charge her own examination was read, from which it appeared that fourteen or fifteen years ago, a thing like 'a Christian man' had importuned her to sell her soul to the devil, and that she had done so, giving to her Familiar the name of 'Fancy'.

On account of an insult offered to her daughter, Anne Redferne, by Robert Nutter, they two conspired to place a bad wish upon Nutter, of which he died.

It was further deposed against her that John Device had agreed to give Old Chattox a dole of meal yearly if she would not hurt him, and that when he ceased to make this annual tribute, he took to his bed and died.

She was further charged with having bewitched the drink of John Moore, and also with having, without using the churn, produced a quantity of butter from a dish of skimmed milk!

In the face of this evidence, and no longer anxious about her own life, she acknowledged her guilt, but humbly prayed the judges to be merciful to her daughter, Anne Redferne; but her prayer was in vain.

Page 3. ---- Inspector Admits "Tip" Jail Delivery of Wells and Pelley Planned ---- PAIR IDENTIFIED ---- Special to The Star Preston, Oct. 12. - Without entering a plea Willis Pelley, 26, alias Kelly, and Edward Wells, 31, alias Green, alias Davidson, of Toronto, charged with robbing the Imperial Bank here of $2,037 on October 4. were committed for trial in the next assize court at Kitchener by Magistrate John R. Blake of Galt. Russell Webster, accountant, and C. S. Wismer, of teller, gave evidence of the hold-up and the and Wells in court. Inspector John Miller, C.L.D., told of finding the money on the prisoners.

H. B. Weir appeared for Wells and R. P. Ottewell of Toronto for Pelley.

Questioned about a report that there were two automobiles with men near the jail one night this week, Inspector Moore denied this also.

The prisoners were rushed away to Kitchener jail at 3.15 in two police cars followed by the Toronto police.

Rumors that an attempt would be made by an armed gang to rescue Pelley and Wells came to Inspector John Miller, criminal Investigation branch of provincial police, and Detectives Arthur Harris and Wm. Hutchison, on their arrival here at noon to-day

Inspector Miller of the provincial police stated police h had been definitely advised by a Toronto source a jail delivery of Wells and Pelley would be attempted. He stated seven extra guards had been placed on duty at the Kitchener jail, but that no attempt to release the men had occurred.

Wells and Pelley arrived handcuffed, and were bustled through the crowded court-room while scores of men and women clamored to get in.

"Did you bring the whole army?" asked Magistrate Blake as the constables walked into the courtroom.

Ask Trial by Higher Court Wells and Pelley were charged individually with robbing C. Wismer, teller of $2,037. "How do you want to be tried?" asked Magistrate Blake. "Before a higher court," answered Wells.

Pelley, after consultation with his lawyer, R. Bottwell of Toronto, also elected to be tried by a higher court.

D. S. Dowlby, K.C., of Kitchener acted for the crown.

Pelley was given his hearing first. C. Wismer, teller of the Imperial Bank, first called, said Miss L. R. Binkley, Charles Hollaway and and Mr. Webster were in the bank with him at the time.

"I was in the cage working away when I heard a noise and someone said, 'Stick up your hands," said Wismer. "Another man ordered us in the vault."

"Was he armed?" "Yes."

"Who was the man? Is he in court to-day?" "Yes, that gentleman there," pointing to Pelley.

Wismer said the staff were herded into the vault.

"What happened then?" "We heard one chap say to the other, "Hurry up. The steel door was closed. As soon as we heard the front door closed we ran out. The men were gone." Wismer said he had sent away to the clearing-house $4.375. in Kitchener

"Yes."

R. P. Ottewell, counsel for Pelley, waived examination of Wismer.

Inspector Miller said $1,010.65 was found on Pelley when he was arrested in the apartment on Queen St. W. in Toronto. The money was produced in court. Pelley was committed for trial after this and Mr. Ottewell and he had no objection.

Picked Him Out of Line-up Wells then was given a hearing. Russell Webster, accountant, said the two men came in. "I saw one, he had a gun and one covered me with the gun. Wismer came out of the cage and the man covered him."

"Who was the man that covered you?" "A short dark man."

"Where is he?" asked the magistrate and Webster pointed to Wells.

"He ordered me to stick 'em up."

Webster said he picked Wells out of a line-up at Kitchener jail as the man who covered him.

H. B. Weir, counsel for Wells, waived examination. Inspector Miller said Detectives Harris and Hutchinson found $1.010 on Wells.

Magistrate Blake asked to recall Wismer and Webster. They had re- turned to the bank a few yards away. "I want to know if there was a robbery at the bank. No one has told me so yet," he said.

Wismer, recalled, stated the robbery took place at 12.15 and $2,037 was stolen and he identified the money.
