Happy Birthday, #Helen (21/11).
Helen's foray into Bollywood began with a little help from a family friend, actress Cuckoo. Starting with group dance roles in movies like "Shabistan" (1951) and "Awaara" (1951), Helen quickly became a regular in the industry. Her talent shone through, earning her solo dance spots in films such as "Alif Laila" (1954) and "Hoor-e-Arab" (1955). Notably, she also appeared as a street singer in "Mayurpankh" (1954).
A significant breakthrough came in 1958 when Helen was just 19. Her performance in the song "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" from the film "Howrah Bridge" captured hearts. Sung by Geeta Dutt, this song marked the start of a series of successful projects for Helen. The 1960s and 1970s saw her rise to fame, with Geeta Dutt lending her voice for many of Helen's performances. During this period, Helen often portrayed characters who would perform a song or dance and then exit the plot, paving the way for the film's lead actress.
By 1969, Helen had become a household name, even gracing the cover of Filmfare Magazine. Another prominent singer, Asha Bhosle, frequently provided playback for Helen's performances, especially during the 1960s and early 1970s. Helen's versatility wasn't just limited to dance; she was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1965 for her role in "Gumnaam". Her dramatic roles in "China Town" and "Sachaai" (1969), alongside Shammi Kapoor, were box office hits. She also portrayed a compelling character in "Chhote Sarkar" (1974), co-starring Shammi Kapoor and Sadhana. Helen's hit dance numbers included 'Suku Suku' in "Junglee", 'Yamma Yamma' in "China Town", and several others.
Helen's fame wasn't confined to the Indian cinema; she performed on stages in London, Paris, and Hong Kong. In 1973, "Helen, Queen of the Nautch Girls", a 30-minute documentary by Merchant Ivory Films, highlighted her life and career. This was followed by Jerry Pinto's book "The Life and Times of an H-Bomb" in 2006, which won a National Film Award. Writer Salim Khan played a key role in Helen's career, casting her in several films he co-scripted. Her performance in "Lahu Ke Do Rang" (1979) earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. In recognition of her contributions, Helen received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
Though she officially retired in 1983, Helen made occasional appearances in films like "Khamoshi: The Musical" (1996) and "Mohabbatein" (2000). She also appeared alongside her real-life step-son #SalmanKhan in "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and in "Humko Deewana Kar Gaye" (2006). Her contributions were further acknowledged when she was selected for the Padma Shri in 2009, alongside Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Kumar. Helen also served as a judge in the semifinals and finals of India's 2009 "Dancing Queen" television series.

INDIES TOP 111 HINDI TELEVISION SERIALS OF ALL TIME!
INDIES TOP 111 HINDI TELEVISION SERIALS OF ALL TIME!
Of a time when Indian television, in its nascent stages, in it's first decade as a independent entertainment platform, format & medium, extending itself beyond the 3/4th century old Indian cinema tradition, was able to maintain a storyboard soul structure, alongside it’s much heralded beautiful traditional rich deeply cultured exposition of drama, all whilst giving voice to longer more patient more marinated forms of storytelling within its fold.
Till the new millennia & the few yrs just preceding, that is, (barring a very few modern exceptions, decent enough to mingle with the greats, & included herein), with its commercially driven sloth in keeping the beating of the dead horse on, till viewers & makers themselves lost all sense of carriage, motion, plan, direction, or vision, birthed a collective numbing & dumbing down of societal viewership consciousness, in front of our very eyes – a veritable genetic mutation of sorts of collective taste, just like that.
So here we are at Indies - remembering the old glorious normal, for pleasure & posterity - & for our future generations deserve to have a semblance of sense of our once golden cultural humanity. For no generation, howsoever materially satiated, can thrive w/o deeper hope !
Of our blessed past. And the latent magical shelter of it's proficiently fulfilling, heart-tugging narrative. 🙏

“I don’t remember exactly in what form I first encountered the story of Aladdin. But I remember I heard it in Bengali, and this happened in Calcutta, now Kolkata, when I was very young, before the Disney animated movie or the Alif Laila show on state-run Indian TV. The Arabian Nights are old and have grown in many directions, media, and languages, retold with infinite diversity and divergence. I never thought of the version I heard as “foreign” in any way.
It was many years later that I learned that even the “original” Arabian Nights Aladdin was a last-minute anthology insertion by a French collector based on a folktale he’d heard from a Syrian Christian storyteller, set in a generic China that was somehow also Muslim and Arab and featured a villain from generic Africa. And then I rewatched the animated film set in Hollywood exotic Arabia featuring classic American cinema/pop-culture references. And I knew that some day I needed to give this roaming orientalist classic yet another temporary residence to call its own. So this book started out as a retelling, a new house for a fable that I could see was tired and lost, but then the place I set the new story in, and the people who lived there, started demanding to be let in. This book is what happened after they took over and invited their friends. I think it stopped being a retelling at some point, but I was too busy trying to clean up after these unruly creatures to tell. Whatever it is, I really enjoyed writing this one!”

South Carol on the other hand is protected by Donald Duck country and south carol runs an Adam Smith free economy.
North Carol is an information blocked country and boasts to outside countries that it is self-sustained and self-sufficient. Recently North Carol invaded South Coral but their efforts were thwarted by the intervention of Donald Duck Country.

When the hanging official asked him whether a cloth should be placed to cover his head: replied vehemently with a no. Leader Salam Saddam Masala died a martyr’s death. Donald Duck
Mr. Ace won massive landslide and became the President of Donald Duck country. He was an ideal proponent of the `religion: Good Life. All the departments of the government were given the book Holy Rites. And special prayers were made to praise God. Mr. Ace was instrumental in shifting the embassy of Donald Duck from loose-life-city to Nobel-city. This was a historic move to strengthen the religion Good Life. Afterwards when elections were held, the boxes were rigged and Mr. Ace lost the elections.

The prison is in the Bay of Bengal and it’s a high security prison with an exaggerated torture. The prisoners are not killed but tortured like they are not allowed to sleep with bright light shining on them. Bay of Bengal has come under flak for its cruelty by the Human Rights organization Surreal Peace. During the tenure of one president Mr. Bonhomie, has said that he will shut down the prison but nothing of that sort has happened so far.
Pope Deus
Pope Deus is writing a letter to his gay friend Gayphoria.
Dear friend Gayphoria, I know that I am a sinful person, but I have learned to love you from the core of my heart.  I have loved touching, tasting, fondling, penetrating your body with poems. Dear Gayphoria my flesh is carnal, earthly and sensual but my spirit is repentant. I know that you are living in a monastery and you have made fervent vow to abstain from homosexuality. I plead with you for love’s sake for pleasure’s sake don’t turn me down, your loving Pope Deus.

Spiritual Immersion
For a brief few hours, I was immersed into a musical culture quite foreign to me. I attended a concert by a Indian sitar star, Alif Laila. Alif born in Dahka, Bangladesh and came to the United States in 1981. Her career has taken her to prestigious venues including UNESCO World Heritage sites. Accompanied by Suryahshah Deshpande playing the tabla, which is something like a two-headed bongo drum,…

Aladdin Ran So Ali Baba Could Fly
Tumblr media
Fantasies set in the middle east are such a celebrated genre on Indian Television. I wasn’t there for the iconic Alif Laila series (1993-97), but I was for Hatim (2003-04) and then recently Aladdin Naam Toh Suna Hoga (2018-21). So now that they were doing the Ali Baba and 40 thieves story, I knew I was going to be there for it as well.
I love stories with magic and fairytale elements anyway. And then these stories have THAT exotic aesthetic that is to die for. You know, this one:
Tumblr media
Right off the bat, they upgraded the heck out of the original Ali Baba story, adapting it for pure fantasy and fleshing out various aspects of it. The thieves are straight-up warlocks and then zombies and I believe Ali is a sorcerer as well. His name being Baba (term of endearment for father, elder brother, or friend) has more meaning when he is the caretaker of 5 orphan children who are the cutest things ever.
The oldest child, with whom Ali clearly has the most understanding as she is more mature than others, is named Alifi – symbolism for her being an extension of him. Alifi is the only person who sees Ali being abused by his elder brother.
Not that it matters much because he abuses Ali well outside the 4 walls of their house later anyway. Though this is where the show steps away from the usual stuff we see on TV and also its predecessor in the genre, Aladdin.
