Sirin and Alkonost are paradise birds-maidens from bookish Byzantine and Slavic legends. In Western European legends, Sirin is the embodiment of the unhappy soul. In Russian spiritual poems, Sirin, descending from paradise to earth, mesmerizes people with her singing. Alkonost is a sea bird symbolizing God's Providence and God's mercy. The singing of this bird is so beautiful that those who hear it forget everything in the world.

The Alkonost is a legendary woman-headed bird in Slavic folklore. Alkonost is more likely an individual character, as was noted in some legends about this bird.

Sirin is a mythological creature of Rus' legends, with the head of a beautiful woman and the body of a bird (usually an owl), borrowed from the siren of the Greek mythology. According to myth, the Sirin lived in Iriy or around the Euphrates River.

Gamayun is a prophetic bird of Russian folklore. It is a symbol of wisdom and knowledge and lives on an island in the mythical east, close to paradise.

Started a new sketchbook, trying hard to keep up this habit.

The Alkonost and the Sirin are two sides of the same coin. Both are beautiful women with the bodies of birds and both have magical voices of unimaginable beauty. The Alkonost guards good fortune by day and the Sirin by night. You cannot separate the two, because one is simply the alter ego of the other

ALKONOST

Her voice is supposed to be so beautiful that she can make you forget anything that hurts you. She is said to sing about the beauties of paradise for the saints so that they don’t give in to despair and temptation. Other stories claim that wars have actually ended due to her voice

SIRIN

Birds with black feathers are often attributed as being conduits between this world and the other side, bringing messages from the dead. It is no surprise then that the Sirin has dark plumage like a raven or a crow. Given that she is just the Alkonist’s alter ego, it could be argued that it is her divine duty to punish the wicked and usher the dead to their afterlife. She is, after all, still a guardian of good fortune

Vasilisa was walking through the forest, through an apple grove, and suddenly she heard strange voices! One of them is wailing and crying: “Don't go there! Death is waiting for you at the hut on chicken legs!”, and the second one is exactly the opposite - ”Don't be afraid, Vasilisa! Everything will be fine! Baba Yaga won't touch you!” It's Sirine and Alkonost, birds of beauty. They are sisters to each other. They have maiden heads and bird bodies. They resemble each other like two drops of water, except that their plumage differs: Sirin's wings are black and her claws are sharp; Alkonost is like a clear sun, shining and shimmering with gold. Sirine calls out trouble, all flowers wither from her gaze, the sky closes with clouds and the forest becomes darker. Alkonost attracts happiness, her gaze makes flowers bloom, the sun shines brighter and the forest revives. Vasilisa took out a doll, fed it to her and asked her how to get to Baba Yaga. And the doll answered her: “When you see that the forest is getting darker, and the apples and flowers are rotting, know that somewhere Sirine is flying close by, and when you hear her sorrowful cry, hide among the thick bushes, press your ears with the palms of your hands and don't go a step farther. And if the sun comes out, when the flowers blossom again and the apple fruits are ripe, go out on the path and open your ears. As long as Alkonost sings her song, no misfortune will befall you.”
