Mortal Sparks

Wooow writing- I've done some. Just now. A little angsty, but I think Nicolette is entitled.

Neither of them spoke. Night had fully fallen, and there was no moon yet. The pale gravel of the road was the only landmark that Nicolette could make out. She chanced a look at Alyss, still spread across the oak roots as if she did this every day, as if she was comfortable. Her outline was only a darker shadow against the dark trees. Nicolette couldn’t even feel her life force. The push push of blood pulsing through veins was strangely absent. Fear seized like ice inside Nicolette. She grabbed at Alyss, her shoulder, her hand, fumbling fingers around her wrist. As soon as she touched her, Nicolette knew she was losing her mind. Alyss was warm, living, with skin that flexed under her fingertips.  “What the hades-” Alyss batted away her hands. Nicolette burst into sobs. Grateful sobs.  “I thought- I thought-,” she covered her fance with her hands and retreated back to a curl. She cried on her own for a moment, until hands started to pull at her arms.  “What was that?” Alyss asked, “You can’t just grab a girl…” “I thought - I thought you - had died - I couldn’t feel -” Nicolette gasped out nonsense.  Alyss was stronger than her, and had gotten control of her arms.  “I’m here,” Alyss offered, clearly befuddled. “I don’t think I’m dead, at least.” “No,” Nicolette gulped in air, easier without hands over her face. “No, it’s me.”

a kauran is a large farm animal, like a big lobster-ish hog

all farmed animals in Elleiz can regrow limbs, so the leg is not a noble cut. but it is tasty nonetheless

the "bell" from bell salad is a tuber-like vegetable, kinda like a sweet potato

Elleiz natives are predominantly carnivorous due to how hard it can be to farm plants in ice planets. the main vegetables they consume are energy-rich stuff like tubers, which is why they find leafy vegetables so unsatisfying

(they do consume leafy vegetables, but those are usually considered decorative ingredients, not main ingredients one could potentially live off of)

My Long Forgotten Cloistered Sleep is one of my favourite Kajiura songs,and it constantly reminds me of Alyss, always ,since the very first time I heard it 5yrs ago, so I had to draw this eventually . I wanted to draw her like a wisp of white against the background of white fabric,like a pure white dream fading into memory (edit: Tumblr is blurring it kinda making it look even more faded than I intended? Not a bad thing,but please click for quality!)

Pandora Hearts Volume 7 Review

It’s been a while since I reviewed Pandora Hearts manga volumes. Day 13 of my reading challenge has me continuing the manga series by reading Volume 7. It’s quite a volume full of foreshadowing for future turn of events.

The volume begins with Lottie’s memories of her first meeting with Jack Vessalius and her perspective of his bond with Glen. If you know the twist, these scenes feel sort of scary in that they’re shown from a biased perspective. Jack is seen as mysterious, but gentle while Glen seems stoic but harbors a deep bloodlust. The fact that he suddenly decided to shed blood and create the Tragedy of Sablier but the reason why is unknown. It makes it seem like Glen either had a deep hatred for Jack, was possessed or had to kill for a deeper reason. That’s the mystery of it all.

Fortunately, the events of the previous volume has impacted Oz positively as he decides to find a way to grow out of his self-sacrificial ways. In a way, he has developed a new appreciation for life in a way… This is why Elliot is so vital to the story—he’s the one who caused Oz to change for the better. This, in turn, causes Oz to think more about Alice as he wants to keep helping her but also want to know about the tragedy.

The volume then takes a bit of a break with funny antics from the gang getting drunk and Sharon bonding with Alice as she becomes an Oz and Alice shipper. Gosh, I do wish that the manga kept developing these two’s bond in a way because, despite me being a fan of Mochizuki, she doesn’t treat her female characters that well unless they’re for the plot. In a way, they’re written well, but not executed as well as they are written—she did get a little better in The Case Study of Vanitas, but that’s decisive.

Then, the volume dives straight into Oz having an audience with Rufus Barma, a member of the Barma household, which is one of the four dukedoms. While he warns them about how the power of knowledge is both good and bad, foreshadowing the tragic events, the story suddenly shifts into Break’s past as he seems to have a connection to the tragedy as he used to be named Kevin Regnard (somehow, it became Legnard in the following chapter).

Break’s backstory was crazy. He was an infamous illegal contractor killing people—116 of them—and was later thrown into the abyss where he met the Intention of the Abyss, also named Alice, but I’m gonna call her Alyss going forth. Anyways, Alyss is the reason why Break doesn’t have a left eye as she gauged it out and gave it to Cheshire. To be honest, my memory of this part of the story is a little fuzzy, so I hope that it’s a refresher for me once I get to the next volume.

Other than that, I did like the Elliot and Leo portions as Elliot got issues of his own from being angry over Gilbert’s existence as he’s his adopted brother to him having nightmares. I do like that Leo may seem like he constantly scolds Elliot, but he only does it when he’s in the wrong. Their moments are so cute…and I’m cherishing them…

Anyways, this volume is pretty lay-low until the last bit with Break’s backstory. I don’t remember exactly where the anime ended—I think it was the next volume since I do remember Rufus Barma having a voice actor, meaning he showed up. One of these days, I need to watch the anime and later plead for a new one. Anyways, let me know your thoughts on this volume!
