The person he’s dancing with wears a smile. It’s pretty and kind, and Shoto can’t help but smile too.
“Do I know you?”
Shoto waits breathlessly for your response. Confirm it. Laugh at him. Tell him he’s right. Call him an idiot.
You look at him carefully, watching him like a cat.
“No.”
Shoto doesn’t know why he expected otherwise.
He nods, suddenly aware of how hot his face is. “Right.”
Feeling embarrassed, he walks down the stairs like it’s his walk of shame. Maybe he needs a brain surgeon together with that family therapist. Shoto knows that he’s not the best at picking up social cues, but something up there is obviously not working.
“But I’m flattered that you think so.”
Shoto whirls around, and finds you staring at him curiously. The electric air from before has vanished, but you don’t seem fazed at all as you power through the sparks of awkwardness like this was an average Tuesday.
Shoto may be able to bench-press a car and walk through fire, but the way you breeze through the tension with such leisure puts you in front of him by buildings.
“Exchange numbers?” You suggest, seeing his loss of words. He probably looked like a mess.
Please kill me now.
“Yeah.” He manages, fumbling with his phone. Man, why couldn’t he just say that?
The tension is so thick between the both of you he’s surprised something didn’t shatter.
You look at him with a smile, and Shoto swears he’s going through a cardiac arrest.
“What’s your name?”
He bites his lip, and tastes blood.
“Shoto. Shoto Todoroki.”
Shoto was, simply put, fucked.
His head was in a mess and was pounding as he clenched his phone tightly in his hands. On its screen was your number, and your profile picture of a blurred unglam of you. Shoto finds it charming.
What in Endevour’s name happened?
No, scratch that, his father was trying to atone, but Shoto had no qualms about stealing his credit cards and maxing them all out.
He’s done it before, and he’ll do it again.
Shoto grasps his shirt. His heart was only now slowing down, and he felt like he accidentally ingested Shinso’s triple shot Expresso heart attack. In case it wasn’t obvious, Shoto was freaking out. So much so that he almost burned down the dorms again because of his mini “emotion explosion” (He’s getting that trademarked).
It was as if his world was compressed to the size of a stress ball, and any more pressure would cause it to burst. It felt as if it was just you, him and the snow…
Shoto cradles his head in his hands.
What’s this feeling? Why does he feel like his heart is going to explode?
He thinks back to your expression, your eyes, rich with shock and…something else.
Shoto knows it. That you felt it too.
“Stop it.” He whispers. “Get a grip Shoto. Come on.”
He does not.
There’s a hand on his shoulder and the other in his own. There’s a glow from an oil lantern, and the rest of the scene is blurry with greens and whites. the marble under his feet squeaks as he dances. The person he’s dancing with wears a smile. It’s pretty and kind, and Shoto can’t help but smile too.
The atmosphere is soft, relaxed, comfortable. Everything is, from the way his steps coincide with the person he’s dancing with, all the way to how his hand is fitted on the mysterious maiden’s.
“Sho,” What a soothing voice.
The words slip out like butter. “Snowflake.”
It feels so right.
All but suddenly, the oil lamp is snuffed out, plunging them into pitch-black darkness.
His alarm clock blares, and Shoto rips his blanket off him as his eyes snap open.
The aching sensation of loss lingers at the back of his throat. Flashes of foggy dialogue linger at the back of his mind. There’s yelling, and there’s crying, all mixed into one glob that pierces the back of his mind like a pike.
Damn, that hurts like a bitch.
-
Shoto cracks his skull against his bedframe and dies.
Or so he wishes.
We should meet up and talk sometime.
Wanna study together?
It’s like he thinks he’s God or something.
He glances through your string of messages with a head stuffed into his pillow, all conversations cut by his ‘I got to go now.’ or ‘Maybe some other time.’
Shoto and you’ve texted. Texted a lot.
But that’s just it. Texting. Your whole chat is essentially a game of Trivia with dialogue ripped straight out from a ‘How to Make Friends’ question list.
He knows enough to find out about your birthday and Quirk, your favourite food, and if he squints, your favourite movie.
Seen each other? Not so much.
It’s not his fault that he has to hit the gym every day, or has twice the amount of assignments to make up for lost time, or has detention for setting the toaster on fire—
Okay maybe that was his fault.
He can’t do this. He tells himself. It’s not fair for you.
Even he knows that’s not something he shouldn’t do.
Shoto wants to see your face, hear your voice, go schizophrenic every time he sees you in the hall. Just, for a prolonged period (and not die.)
That’s why he is determined to schedule a study session with you today, at 2, and no matter how cluttered his schedule is, he will—
“You sure like to get lost in your head, don’t you?”
Shoto turns around and finds you leaning against a pillar. Your smile is dripping with amusement.
Shoto wipes the sweat off his forehead, eyebrows crinkling.
“Urgh, stop that. You really should work on your greetings, Mister I’m So HOT AND COOL—”
Shoto slams a hand on your mouth, hissing. “What is wrong with you? There are people—”
You lick his hand, making him recoil.
Your lips spread into a lazy grin, eyebrow cocked as if to say, do I look like I care?
“You should care,” Shoto replies seriously. “I do.”
“Well, I ain’t you, hero,” you respond. “And to answer your scrunched-up face, I was passing through. Wanted to see what you were up to.”
“The gym and alcoholism.” He says with a straight face.
You’re not fazed in the slightest. “Yeah, that makes sense. Heard about your family and everything. Really, sorry about that, by the way.”
Shoto shrugs. “Well, it’s getting better. Or, it will. Eventually.” Shoto rubs his hand on his sweats, making another round to the weights before he grabs another, heavier than the last. “Oh, right. Are you free this afternoon? My schedule’s clear for once, so I thought we could study together.”
Haha, liar. He had to pull strings to make time for you, but it is worth it when you nod and smile. “Yeah, let’s do it.”
He tries not to think too much about the dream.
When he thinks too hard, it gets even fuzzier. Everything felt so vivid. The warmth in his hand, the gaze on his face, god, he can still remember how much he loved it. He wishes to relive that dream.
He wishes for a lot of things.
Some of them, he can’t quite remember.

Anime I Watched in 2021 in Order of Monthly Release
So this won’t be an actual ranking of anime I have seen this year. Going by the months they came out in, I give some brief thoughts on each one. Spoiler alert: I have not watched Odd Taxi, which I’m sure is heresy. I’ll get around to it eventually, I swear 😅
Btw, it’s a long list of shows, hence the Keep Reading break.
January:
Laid-Back Camp S2
When I discovered the first season, it was such a pleasant and relaxing surprise. And this is coming from someone who does not like camping. While the first season was watching everyone learning the ways of camping from Rin, S2 treated us to watching everyone go out on their own, gaining more experience from each day. Overall, this show left me feeling as warm and toasty as sitting by a campfire would. I just wished I could have seen the OVA because I cannot get enough of this little show.
The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬
This series ended up being the first rom-com in a long while that I absolutely adored. Just plain funny with an engaging cast. Bibury Animation Studios did some great work, and I hope there is more to come aside from the movie that is slated for next year.
So I'm a Spider, So What?
As far as isekai is concerned, this anime surprised me with its more brutal world and the main character, which led to me falling in love with her seiyū, Aoi Yūki. That aside, the anachronic storytelling did test my patience for a while. Which is not to say that it didn’t keep me on my toes with certain reveals. But I do hope if and when another season is made, they tell a more straight-forward story.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime S2
In spite of falling victim to pandemic delays, this ridiculous isekai continued to escalate the tension while simultaneously poking fun at the tropes it incorporates, and even pulling a fast one on those like myself who have not experienced the source material.
March:
Pacific Rim: the Black
I nearly forgot about this show until I saw the email from Netflix reminding me of it. On paper, an animated series based on Pacific Rim would seem like a no-brainer. Sadly, I cannot recall much from it, only that it left me with a sense of indifference. Which is better than how I felt toward Pacific Rim: Uprising, where I found that to be a soulless sequel to a film with more heart put into it.
My Hero Academia S5
This was one big mixed bag of a season for MHA. While I was initially underwhelmed with yet another tournament arc, the little bit of development from Deku and Shinso sort of makes up for it. The episodes revolving around Shoto, Endeavor and their family drama was the real meat of the season, in my opinion. The last portion with the villains was neat, if only to see what Shigaraki and company were up to while everything with the heroes was occurring.
April:
Godzilla Singular Point
After the dreadfully boring Godzilla Earth trilogy, Singular Point comes off like a refreshing new take on the classic kaiju mythos with some mind-bending quantum shenanigans. I’m a fan of most of the monster designs and also how most of them start off smaller than their live-action counterparts. The CGI also worked well as it blended in with the 2D animation. The cast had a good variety of personalities among them.
Higehiro
Actually forgot to include this in the list, which is not a fault on the anime but my bad memory. In spite of the surface-level gross premise, and at times cringe writing that can be showcased as Men Writing Women, there is something to be said about this drama in the guise of a romantic comedy that I cannot help but appreciate. I will not go out of my way to herald it as something everyone should watch, but it goes places that caught me off guard. Also, features the second-worst mother in anime I have been exposed to all thanks to contrivance.
The Slime Diaries
Just as with the main series, this spin-off also had to contend with the pandemic. Despite that, it offered a great slice of life view of the main cast, further developing a few of the supporting characters while featuring a few new faces that have yet to be named. And I will stan Geld and his adopted goblin daughter.
Zombie Land Saga Revenge
Never would I imagine an idol anime would keep me wanting more, and on occasion listen to the music while I do other things. More often I would laugh out loud from all the gags, and feel invested in every character’s story. Especially when they finally explored Yugiri’s past and cleverly tied it into actual history.
I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level
Another isekai that is also a slice of life, and one that is just quaint. More Aoi Yūki is never a bad thing.
Eighty-Six
Quite possibly my favorite anime of the year. Speaking as someone who has not read the source material, nearly every episode kept me at the edge of my seat. It definitely has that Game of Thrones sense of “this character you like may die when you least expect it”, which I think is partly why I became so invested in the cast. I would also go as far as to express the opinion that this is a spiritual successor to Mobile Suit Gundam in terms of its portrayal of war and the inter-personal drama among the soldiers. April cannot come soon enough to see where it goes from how episode 21 ended.
Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro
I nearly gave up on this show by the time I watched the third episode as it leaned too much into the weird teasing fetish it displayed. But I am glad I did not as what followed slowly evolved into a cute yet ridiculous rom-com.
To Your Eternity
While it has an interesting premise and started off strong with the first five episodes, the series overall is somewhat of a mixed bag, in my mind. The dips in quality during the prison arc did not help, but it was never enough to give me reason to drop the show. With that said, I look forward to seeing what comes next in 2022.
July:
Drugstore in Another World
Yet another slice of life isekai, and one I dropped after a handful of episodes. Much like Killing Slimes for 300 Years, it is just quaint, but also lacking in anything to keep me wanting to watch more.
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S
I always feel the mere mention of this series never fails in invoking opinions made about the manga’s creator and the general character designs. I stopped fretting over such things and simply enjoyed the work that KyoAni put into the anime, and the second series featured some of the best animation in the industry. And sure, the character models can only be described as booba, but how each is written makes me look past all of that and appreciate the personalities and flaws that come through in each episode. What began as a guilty pleasure has become a full-blown wholesome favorite.
The Aquatope on White Sand
Having read or heard nothing about this, I watched the first episode on a whim and I am glad I did so. From the drop-dead gorgeous backgrounds to the wonderfully relatable characters, Aquatope was a pleasant yet emotional coming of age show that I’m happy to have seen.
August:
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!
Another anime I started but did not feel the desire to stick with. It is amusing enough, but for whatever reason it could not keep my attention.
Fena: Pirate Princess
Another great-looking anime and one that grabbed me from the start. However, as it progressed toward the end, I felt it was telling a different story than how it began. Which is not to say it left me feeling whiplash, just that I was not prepared for the meta-narrative it was building toward. That being said, the ending was certainly an emotionally gripping one, and left off with a greater sense of open-endedness. Also features Aoi Yūki. Nuff said.
Tonikawa ~SNS~
More Tonikawa is never not a bad thing, even if it was just an OVA. I very much look forward to the next season.
September:
Ganbare Dōki-chan
A series of shorts I knew little about going in, and was surprised by the adorable nature of office romance shenanigans. Not to mention the completely random cleverly concealed adult content that it flashes in the first episode as some odd enticement with no follow-up. But I am not complaining as I still enjoyed it on the whole.
October:
Restaurant to Another World S2
Not only is this yet another isekai, but one with a unique spin that I feel separates it from its contemporaries. I often commented (ignorantly, I might add) on how this series has little to offer in terms of a plot, but that should not matter. As I have been informed elsewhere, this particular kind of anime is the type that is figuratively comfort food, and I find myself in agreement with that assessment. It is also wrong of me to view it as telling one story when the true appeal comes from the minor tales that center on each of Nekoya’s patrons.
Digimon Ghost Game
While my viewing of the Digimon Adventure reboot fell by the wayside, I have no qualms with keeping up with Ghost Game with its spooky hooks and entertaining characters. What is more is that it is a different approach in the sense of conflicts not always ending with the good Digimon obliterating the bad ones. That said, there seem to be some seeds planted for later on, which I look forward to seeing how the overarching narrative plays out. Also, Gammamon is the goodest Digimon and deserves all the chocolate.
Takt Op. Destiny
For being something made to accompany a mobile game, this was pretty damn good on the whole. However, the build up toward the finale is lacking, in my opinion, as the twelve episodes they produced start off slow and ramp up quickly without much warning. Maybe if they went for a two-part series, they could have paced things evenly and work toward the cliché villain reveal. It looked amazing, though, so there is that.
Komi Can't Communicate
This one is a bit shameful to mention as I have not continued watching it. I did like what I have seen and will likely get around to watching the rest eventually.
The Faraway Paladin
Stop me if you have heard this already: Yet another isekai. But, one that also has a unique spin that is shared with another (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation). I would be curious to know if the author of the source material has any experience with Dungeons & Dragons, because the Faraway Paladin truly comes off like something born from a player’s perspective. At the very least it goes about western fantasy and world-building that is reminiscent of the table-top role-playing game and the stories which it is derived from. It would even be conceivable to imagine them having played console video games that sparked such inventiveness. I only hope Children’s Playground Entertainment is able to smooth out their production as this is one of the rougher anime I have seen this year. Not at the expense of their workers, mind you. I will gladly accept the current quality as long as they can avoid the crunch and remain safe with the on-going pandemic.

1. 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐤𝐞𝐢𝐧
Tags: Anachronism (part 1), fem!reader, fluff, reincarnation, second life, you get the drill
Shoto feels like he has seen you before. But that’s not possible. He’s never seen you in his life.
Believe it or not, it all started with one stupid celebration.
“Come on Shoto,” Ochaco whines, chasing after him into the common room. “It’s one party to celebrate the end of the war! Deku and Katsuki are finally out of the hospital and the school wants to do something fun before we get back to training—”
“I have a half-barbecued brother at home and in desperate need of a family therapist.” Shoto deadpans, escaping to the lift, but Ochaco knows him too well and corners him at the couches. Sero scoots over a seat the best he could with a banged-up leg, too absorbed in his phone to care.
“I’m not going for the dance.”
“Shoto, we’ve just won a war,” Ochaco folds her arms, looking exasperated. “Shouldn’t you take some time off to have some fun for one night before throwing yourself back into hero work?”
The one thing that Ochaco doesn’t seem to get is that Shoto despises social events. It might seem like a silly little ‘prom-came-early’ night for his friends, but it’s an extra 3 hours tops of social anxiety, awkwardness and energy that he does not want to live through. His social battery drains at a deadly fast rate, and by the end of 5 minutes inside a dimly lit room with dizzy disco lights, he’s bound to end up unlocking alcoholism two years too early to cope.
Shoto gets it. It’s been two months since they’ve pounded Shigaraki and All For One into the dust, two weeks since he was out of the hospital and three days since U.A. announced this party for the entire school. It was mostly meant for the Hero Course, but then again, the entire school had been affected, and thus was only fair that everyone could celebrate it. But after being stuck bedridden, then rehab, then coming back to find most of the city still being under construction?
To find people homeless, and have lives lost…the feeling of victory has faded into a murky grey off another ‘oh, yeah, I’ve done this’.
It feels jarring and wrong to celebrate this when so many people died.
“’ Chaco, if Icy Hot doesn’t wanna go don’t fuckin’ force him.”
Shoto lets out a sigh of relief when Katsuki slips past the front door and beelines to the kitchen, arms stuffed with groceries. Finally, a man with a conscience. Ochaco pouts and shoots him a last-ditch effort (puppy dog eyes), but with a head shake from Shoto, she finally lets it go and plops down on the sofa in defeat.
As a silent thanks, Shoto yoinks the perishables to help Katsuki restock the fridge, finding peace in knowing that the entire time his class is spent partying at Sparkly Town, he’ll be up in his room in his pyjamas with a tub of popcorn binging the final season of Attack On Titan. War does many things to people, and one of the things Shoto was introduced to was the beautiful, twisted world of anime to cure his infinite boredom on the hospital bed. (He’s highly invested, thank you very much)
It takes Shoto a second to realise that the ash blond is only rearranging what Shoto has already put into the fridge before Shoto picks up the sour envy radiating from his friend’s soul.
“Wish you were me?” He teases, placing the milk carton into one of the bottom shelves.
Katsuki scoffs, instinctively moving it to the shelving on the door. “Shut your trap, Icy Hot. You try having Izuku stare at you with those big fuckin’ puppy eyes. You wouldn’t last ten seconds.”
“I bet longer than you.”
“I call bullshit!”
Katsuki swipes the apple from Shoto’s hands and gives him a menacing glare. “He went batshit crazy when he heard about the school festival and threw a panic party for himself when Denki suggested he ask Ochaco out. What was I supposed to do? Let him die?”
“You’d think that after beating a crazy war demon, he’d be able to pull his act together to ask his year-old crush out.” Shoto chuckles, leaning against the countertop.
“Short story shorter: Someone needs to drag his sorry ass back to the dorms when he fucks his chance up again by falling on his face, and since you weren’t there at the time, he blackmailed and guilt-tripped me into going with him because he’s a wimp.” Katsuki shoves a tomato in and slams the refrigerator door before he downright hisses at Shoto. “You’re lucky.”
Shoto’s response is a smug smile. “We agreed to take turns.”
“Your turn was over 6 months ago!” Katsuki booms. He’s just about had enough, because when he stalks off to the lifts and Shoto calls out a “thank you!” for his noble sacrifice, all he gets is two middle fingers as the lift doors close dramatically.
Man, is he glad not to have a love life.
To everyone’s surprise, Shoto doesn’t burn down the kitchen with his popcorn shenanigans. He does, however, order a big box of the snack because of what happened in the first 5 minutes in said kitchen.
No one has to know, especially not Bakugou.
With his tub of popcorn, he shuffles to the lifts only to stop when his phone vibrates in his pocket.
Uh-oh, a person. Ew.
He balances his phone between his shoulder and his ear, braces himself, and answers the phone one handedly.
“Hello?” He says, pressing his floor number and popping popcorn into his mouth.
“Shoto, thank goodness!” It’s Izuku’s voice, sheepish and awkward. “I’m so sorry to trouble you, but I was wondering if you could grab my phone? It’s on the coffee table, the one in front of the couches.”
Shoto frowns. “Aren’t you using your phone to call me now?”
“I’m calling from Kacchan’s phone. Didn’t you see when you picked up?”
Shoto’s eyes flicker to his phone screen as he rips it away from his ear. Oh.
Part of him doesn’t want to go out. Heck, he’s had enough of family outings and dinners for a good while. All he wants is to watch Eren get kidnapped for the millionth time, Levi kick some ass, and watch people die. Is that really so much to ask for?
“If it’s too much of a hassle, that’s completely fine—”
Oh, right. The call.
With a sigh and a pinch in between his eyebrows, he nods. “Swing by the entrance. I’ll be there in 5 minutes.”
“Sweet! Thanks Shoto! I appreciate it!”
With that, he hangs up. Shoto stares at his box of crisp, caramel popcorn. Looks like the binging will have to wait.
He drops the snack off in his room and trades his shorts for a pair of comfy sweats, throws a coat on and forces himself out of the dorms with Izuku’s phone in hand. Theoretically, the coat was not needed. He could probably walk around in the Artic and scream “Let It Go.” butt naked without a flinch.
Then again, coats are cosy, so sue him, he was wearing one.
He takes a slow walk as he takes in his surroundings, admiring the snow as it dances around him. Being alone is heaven, and Shoto thoroughly appreciates that now that he was out of his house and away from his dysfunctional family.
His eyes trace the outline of U.A’s building, gleaming in the night filled to the brim with life. Fortunately, Izuku’s already there.
“I’m so sorry Shoto, thank you so much!” The green-haired thanks as Shoto passes over the device.
He shrugs. “No big deal. Good luck, by the way. With Ochaco.”
Uh-oh. Wrong dialogue option.
Within seconds, Izuku devolves into a stuttering mess, making Shoto thoroughly wanting to slap his head on one of the lamp posts standing 5 metres away.
He really needs to keep his mouth shut.
“I knew this would happen.” A voice growls, and when Shoto turns, he realises that Blasty Mcxplode had entered the scene, and he had t-minus five seconds before—
“Come on nerd. Let’s go back inside.” Katsuki beckons a semi-functioning Izuku back into the building, before giving Shoto a glare he has seen far to many times in counting.
“Sleep with one eye open, dick head.” He mouths, before he slams the door in Shoto’s face.
Okay.
Three seconds.
He miscalculated.
With a loaded sigh, Shoto turns back around to head back to the dorms as people breeze past him—
Only for his eyes to catch yours.
You stand there with earmuffs and a coat, obviously not dressed to head in. Your hand is up and it looks like you are waving, but Shoto can’t even process anything because as snow falls around you, time seems to slow because he can’t help but feel like he’s seen you before.
But that’s impossible. Shoto has never seen you in his life.
You peer at him with a curious glint sparkling in your orbs, and he can’t help but think, wow…your eyes are mesmerising.
But why?
“Do I know you?”
Your eyes widen for a split second, and it takes him a moment to realise he said it out loud.
Crap, crap, crap—
What is this?
All he wanted was a peaceful night alone, and yet here he is under the snow, heart pounding, breath caught and his face warm.
We met at the start of the winter.
And like clockwork, the dominos fall again. Fate has charted its course with tangled skein, as Shoto finds you again at the age of 16.
