The Key to Efficient Circuit Design: Designing with Parts Availability in Mind
When it comes to designing a circuit board, achieving the best results requires more than just technical expertise. A successful design relies on collaboration and foresight, especially in an environment where supply chain disruptions can significantly affect production timelines. At Voler Systems, we understand the challenges that come with circuit design and parts availability, and we have developed effective strategies to minimize these challenges, ensuring that your design is both reliable and feasible.

One of the key aspects of circuit design is working closely with the mechanical design team. This interactive process ensures that the electrical and mechanical elements of the project align seamlessly. From the outset, both teams exchange their design criteria and continuously refine the project to find the best compromises that balance functionality, cost, and time-to-market. This collaborative approach ensures that every aspect of the design is well thought out and that potential challenges are addressed early.
A major hurdle in circuit design today is selecting components that are readily available. In the past, component selection was primarily based on performance and cost, but with global supply chain issues affecting parts availability, it’s become even more critical to consider the long-term accessibility of the components chosen. When a part becomes unavailable or is suddenly in short supply, it can delay production, leading to significant setbacks in the project timeline. This is why ensuring that the parts selected are available for the long term is an essential part of the circuit design process.
At Voler Systems, we take a proactive approach to parts availability by employing several strategies to minimize the impact of supply chain disruptions. One of the first steps in mitigating this risk is by staying in close contact with manufacturers. Many suppliers provide advance notice if a part is being discontinued or if there is a significant change in availability. This foresight allows us to adjust our designs or look for alternative components before it becomes a critical issue.
Another effective strategy is designing circuits with the flexibility to substitute parts if necessary. By carefully selecting parts with similar specifications and performance characteristics, we ensure that the design can easily accommodate replacements in case a chosen component becomes unavailable. This flexibility is especially important in today’s rapidly changing market, where parts can become scarce without warning.
For particularly critical parts, we recommend purchasing key components in advance. By securing the necessary parts before production begins, we can ensure that the project stays on track, even if supply chain issues arise. This strategy can be especially valuable for parts that have a long lead time or are prone to sudden shortages.
By prioritizing parts availability and employing these strategies, Voler Systems is able to provide reliable and efficient circuit design services that meet the needs of our clients. Our focus on collaboration, foresight, and flexibility ensures that we can deliver high-quality designs on time, no matter the challenges that may arise. Whether you are working on a complex design or a simple circuit board, Voler Systems can help guide you through the process and ensure that your design is both effective and resilient.

Thy Graphics
A graphics card for the Cactus directly patterned after the OSI-440, with a few modernizations and optimizations.

I've replaced the eight 2102 SRAM chips with a pair of 2114s. I've also swapped the 2513 character generator ROM with a 2816 EEPROM which gives me not only lower case letters, but pseudo-graphical characters not unlike PETSCII. I've re-implemented the address select logic using modern parts (thank you 74688), and swapped the open-collector NAND gate based video/sync combiner circuit with one I copied from a PET video combiner circuit using 4066 analog switches. I didn't like how vague the delay taps were described, so I added in some jumpers to let the user pick their delay timing.
And hooo boy this had some motherfucking BUGS in it.
Vertical sync polarity was backwards.
Video pixel data was inverted too.
In fact, so were the DIP switches for the address select.
I also got half of the 74123 resistor/capacitor inputs backwards due to not paying attention to the idiosyncrasies of the symbols in my old version of KiCAD.
Oh, and the character ROM I stole from my OSI-540B replica has inverted bit order, so the characters looked backwards.
Every single problem I had was due to something being backwards.

Nothing a little debugging can't fix. Took about 7 hours of tired stumbling with help from friends in the retrotech crew to figure out all the little faults and work around them, but in the end...

It works! It fucking works! The Cactus has video! I made a fucking video card from scratch! I didn't use any dedicated video chipsets or FPGAs or microcontrollers or CRTCs or any of that shit. I didn't make VGA, I made composite video.

All 24x24 usable characters on screen in monochrome goodness from this tiny little PCB. Now onto the Rev B design!

Pink Noises: Women on Electronic Music and Sound by Tara Rodgers
Get it from my Google Drive HERE
Pink Noises brings together twenty-four interviews with women in electronic music and sound cultures, including club and radio DJs, remixers, composers, improvisers, instrument builders, and installation and performance artists. The collection is an extension of Pinknoises.com, the critically-acclaimed website founded by musician and scholar Tara Rodgers in 2000 to promote women in electronic music and make information about music production more accessible to women and girls. That site featured interviews that Rodgers conducted with women artists, exploring their personal histories, their creative methods, and the roles of gender in their work. This book offers new and lengthier interviews, a critical introduction, and resources for further research and technological engagement.
Contemporary electronic music practices are illuminated through the stories of women artists of different generations and cultural backgrounds. They include the creators of ambient soundscapes, “performance novels,” sound sculptures, and custom software, as well as the developer of the Deep Listening philosophy and the founders of the Liquid Sound Lounge radio show and the monthly Basement Bhangra parties in New York. These and many other artists open up about topics such as their conflicted relationships to formal music training and mainstream media representations of women in electronic music. They discuss using sound to work creatively with structures of time and space, and voice and language; challenge distinctions of nature and culture; question norms of technological practice; and balance their needs for productive solitude with collaboration and community. Whether designing and building modular synthesizers with analog circuits or performing with a wearable apparatus that translates muscle movements into electronic sound, these artists expand notions of who and what counts in matters of invention, production, and noisemaking. Pink Noises is a powerful testimony to the presence and vitality of women in electronic music cultures, and to the relevance of sound to feminist concerns.
Interviewees: Maria Chavez, Beth Coleman (M. Singe), Antye Greie (AGF), Jeannie Hopper, Bevin Kelley (Blevin Blectum), Christina Kubisch, Le Tigre, Annea Lockwood, Giulia Loli (DJ Mutamassik), Rekha Malhotra (DJ Rekha), Riz Maslen (Neotropic), Kaffe Matthews, Susan Morabito, Ikue Mori, Pauline Oliveros, Pamela Z, Chantal Passamonte (Mira Calix), Maggi Payne, Eliane Radigue, Jessica Rylan, Carla Scaletti, Laetitia Sonami, Bev Stanton (Arthur Loves Plastic), Keiko Uenishi (o.blaat)

i genuinely think that enoch drebber’s character design is one of the most beautiful and interesting designs in the entire great ace attorney series. i could also even go to the extent of the entire aa series as a whole.
when i say “beautiful” i don’t particularly mean “he’s sexy/attractive” but in a sense that it reflects his inner own conflicts and tragedies and maybe even lack of humanity left in him. if you compare both of his designs (both past and present) the black/white symbolism is so obviously evident. i see both of these designs almost like an analogy of both yin and yang.
the black in the middle of the white represents the regret and sorrow, including the fraudulent actions he has committed in the past. he’s won a prestigious award and was likely praised for his knowledge in invention despite his poor status. but was he really a pure man?
the white in the middle of the black is almost like his regret and even remorse for his actions committed in the expedition. behind this facade he put on for years he genuinely did not think that albert was truly untalented and was only blinded by his own hatred and disdained morals.
if we look at him in the present, one of the most prominent aspects of his design is his paleness and rather grim choice of clothing. it makes him look almost like a ghost of what he used to be, with his dark hair and eyes having been turned into white. you do not often see anyone dress in all black in victorian london either, it feels like that he’s in grief of having been stripped of all of his aspirations and being anything greater. he reflects his own misfortune and misery. the darkness under his eyes symbolizes his own depression and mistakes.
after losing his own humanity and spiraling to his lowest point he could only use his own once highly regarded skill, the only thing he didn’t lose, for the worst and make these fake deadly machines as a way to reflect his own hatred towards the community of scotland yard. while we don’t know anything about his mechanical hand i feel as if it symbolizes this.
his animations are very unique and not like any tgaa character’s at all… i notice that the leather straps on his abdomen are so similar looking to circuits but also look so much like the rib cage of a human being. despite losing his sense of self and going mad over making these fake inventions out of hate there is still something human-like and organic in his appearance.
as a note, one thing i did find curious is his asymmetry, normally asymmetry in most designs are not executed well but in enoch’s design i feel as if it just… works.
in conclusion i really do feel that his physical appearance really does reflect his own inner turmoil and himself as a character. and this macabre symbolism is what makes me like him so much in general. it makes him stand out more than any other ace attorney character and i really, really resonate with it. this is what i meant by his design being so melancholically beautiful and symbolic.
i don’t know. thanks for reading. this is just coming from some goth guy that likes to think too much about things.

#i have told these to like the two people i already know but like#i feel like i needed to get my thoughts Out There.#he is just so interesting and tragic#thanks for listening to me ramble. nearly cried typing this out tbh.#he means a lot to me#the great ace attorney#ace attorney#dai gyakuten saiban#enoch drebber#enochposting#tgaa

The Role of Relays and Timers in Industrial Automation Systems

In the world of industrial automation, efficiency, safety, and precision are crucial. Among the many components that contribute to a well-functioning automated system, relays and timers play a foundational role. These devices act as control elements that manage the flow of electricity, signal processes, and coordinate timing sequences — ensuring that operations run smoothly and safely.
In this article, we’ll explore how relays and timers work, their types, applications in automation systems, and how high-quality products — like those offered by Enza Electric — can enhance performance and reliability in industrial settings.
What Are Relays?
A relay is an electromechanical or electronic switch used to control a circuit by a separate low-power signal or multiple signals. In industrial automation, relays act as a bridge between the control system and the equipment being operated — allowing machines to be turned on or off automatically.
Types of Relays Commonly Used in Automation:
Electromechanical Relays (EMRs): Use physical moving parts; reliable and easy to maintain.
Solid-State Relays (SSRs): No moving parts; faster switching, longer lifespan, and better for high-speed applications.
Thermal Overload Relays: Protect motors and equipment from overheating.
Control Relays: Designed for controlling multiple contacts simultaneously in automation systems.
What Are Timers?
Timers are devices used to delay or repeat electrical signals at predetermined intervals. They help synchronize tasks, automate sequences, and provide controlled outputs over time — critical for complex industrial processes.
Common Timer Functions:
On-delay and off-delay timing
Interval timing
Cyclic or repeat cycle operation
Flashing and sequencing operations
Types of Timers:
Analog Timers: Manual dial settings, simple and cost-effective.
Digital Timers: Offer precise programming, displays, and flexible timing ranges.
Programmable Timers: Ideal for complex automation routines requiring multiple sequences.
Key Roles in Industrial Automation Systems
1. Process Control and Sequencing
Relays and timers enable automated machines to follow a specific sequence — turning motors, lights, or pumps on and off in a logical order. For example, a conveyor system can use a relay-timer combination to control material flow with millisecond precision.
2. Safety and Protection
Relays protect systems by interrupting circuits in case of faults. Combined with timers, they can ensure delay before activating emergency stop functions, preventing false triggers and increasing worker safety.
3. Load Management
In high-demand industrial environments, relays help manage load distribution by selectively energizing or de-energizing machinery. Timers assist in staggered starts, reducing power surges.
4. Energy Efficiency
By automating start/stop functions and managing operation durations, timers help reduce unnecessary energy use. Relays ensure only the necessary loads are powered, minimizing wastage.

Mother Artemis Welcomes
The cold comfort of The Wilds welcomes many, for in their shadows mystery breeds. The Graceful Mother welcomes you. Though this place was not grown or made for your benefit, you may still find solace within its shelter. Come, ye discarded, forsaken creatures, for the Wilds of Artemis may bring you comfort.
Other beings dwell here. Do well to show them respect in this place.
Her primary Vessel is named Olive, is easily enthused, engaged by noise and movement, and driven by a sense of care and connection. Fractured from the pains in its weening stages, it hopes to embody a sense of compassion and grace that it receives in The Wild. Move forward from kindness and receive it in kind. This is how Olive has come to understand its environment.

By most common parlance we're a 28 year old transfem who lives and was born and raised in Portland, Or. We are a self-collared system of two primary beings, Olive and Mother Artemis. Olive's pronouns are She/It/Doe for others, with She/Her being capitalized when referring to Mother Artemis to give reverence to her presence. This is a place for us to grow, explore, and express ourselves. We currently work in local union organizing and as a tech recycler (grieving targeted wrongful termination). We practice Animism through a Taoist lens. We enjoy electrical circuits and analog display technology, have a particular fondness for the XP era of computing, and are obsessed with emotional design in games as it relates to agency. She has a tendency to take a systems approach to social analysis. We are a sadomasochist from a place of trust and understanding. We deeply enjoy praise, and the joys it brings Olive and other beings.
We are the proud owner of anamo, the M2A1 ammo box PC; the collaborative effort of 4 trans women in tech after arriving as an abandoned project with only sheered holes for fans, anamo became a personal obsession for a time. We enjoy building out systems and tinkering around with hardware, and have dabbled in electrical engineering for various projects. We're a mom of several girls/pets, and the wife of Cinder, for which we have a tag. We love Cathode Ray Tube displays, and try to find any excuse to use them if possible. We enjoy amateur photography and filmmaking, and hope to be doing more work in 4:3 soon. We also enjoy glitching analog video signals and seeing the result, and have soldered together a CHA/V for various projects.

Those that are local to us tend to recognize us by Patricia, Patty for short. She's an electric unicycle we ride around the city, which we're always happy to answer questions about or help people get started on riding themselves.

Foam fluidics showcase team's creative approach to circuit design
When picturing next-generation wearables and robotics, the foam filling in your couch cushions is likely not the first thing that comes to mind. However, Rice University engineers have shown that something as simple as the flow of air through the airy, meshlike structure of open-cell foam can be used to perform digital computation, analog sensing and combined digital-analog control in soft textile-based wearable systems. "In this work, we integrated material intelligence—the ability of materials to sense and respond to their environment—with circuit-driven logic using a surprisingly simple approach based on the flow of fluid through soft foams," said Daniel Preston, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and corresponding author on a study about the research published in Advanced Functional Materials.

The standard line about analog synths is that they let you "design your own sounds", which is theoretically true, but in practice it seems like most people use them to just make small variations on electronic sounds. But I want to use circuit elements to tinker with waveforms until I produce the timbre of a saxophone or something.
Which is why this video is pretty cool, this person set out to actually create a guitar strumming/plucking noises through subtractive synthesis, and really pulled it off.

FOUND ANOTHER FUCKING SOLDER BRIDGE
See those areas marked in red? Those were holding back my OSI 540B replica video board from generating video. This board is of a design where solder mask was not always a given so it's very easy to bridge traces. I found one last spring (left), and I found another one this morning thru tracing the weirdness of the video signal, until I noticed that a pair of 74LS174's weren't passing any signals.
Turns out they were locked up, because master reset was pulled low by another solder bridge (right). See that middle line marked Q3? That should be similar to D3, but it wasn't.

I wasn't sure I had fixed it, until I started tweaking analog video levels again, and suddenly I had something visible on the screen! A few keystrokes later and... BASIC!
FUCK YEAH, BASIC!

And so I decided to run my usual SIN COS test:

The video signal is a bit low voltage, so it appears kinda dark. I need to tweak alot of the analog parts of the circuit, possibly modify a few things to get it playing nice. I also need to run test programs for the color video modes, the whole point of doing this replica build. Here's an original 540B built for monochrome video:

And here's one built for color video:

I built this thing in summer of 2020, it's nice to see it finally video-ing.
FUCK YEAH, I needed that win. I really did.
