Happy Spring Equinox to all. It was a lovely Burgeoning Day on our end, which we spent amongst the buds and blossoms, being serenaded by the drumming of Grouse wings.
As we prepared an Ancestral Feast—which we hold on the Spirit Nights preceeding each of the Cardinal Sabbaths we observe—a small Moth flew to us and landed on our Votive Urn, where it stayed for most of the ritual. This felt quite propitious, since the moth represents an especially potent animal emissary of the Dead in our tradition.

Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj YouTube Channel

Honoring Departed Souls: The Sacred Practice of Shradh
Shradh, also known as Pitru Paksha, stands as a revered Hindu ritual deeply rooted in India’s religious and cultural tapestry. This solemn occasion commemorates the departed loved ones on their death anniversaries, a tradition dating back through generations.
The Essence of Shradh: During Shradh, families gather to perform ceremonies such as Ann Daan, Godaan, and Puja, offering prayers and charity in the name of their ancestors. It’s believed that by remembering and honoring them in this way, their souls find solace and blessings, progressing in their journey beyond.
The Power of Gaumata: Central to Shradh is the reverence for Gaumata, the sacred cow, believed to host 33 crore devatas or divine spirits. Feeding Gaumata is considered an act of profound significance, as it directly reaches and satisfies the departed souls. Gaumata, symbolizing purity and abundance, aids in the liberation of ancestors and the removal of obstacles.
Ways to Honor Departed Souls:
Tirth Shradh & Tarpan: Perform Shradh and Tarpan rituals on the banks of Maa Ganga, elevating the departed souls to higher realms.
Yagya & Pooja for Pitra: Conduct detailed Yagyas and Poojas for deceased family members, offering them happiness and peace.
Godaan: Embrace the powerful act of Godaan, donating cows to alleviate sins, remove obstacles, and elevate souls to heavenly abodes.
Bhandara for Saints/Brahmins: Organize Bhandaras for 11 Saints or Vedic Brahmins, spreading peace and happiness in honor of departed souls.
Feed Gaugrass: Extend care to Gaumata by feeding her green grass, wheat bran, and jaggery, symbolizing purity and abundance.
In Conclusion: Shradh serves as a profound expression of reverence and love for our ancestors, offering them peace and blessings in their journey beyond. By embracing rituals like feeding Gaumata and performing charitable acts, we not only honor our departed but also find spiritual fulfillment in service and compassion.
