Happy Spring Equinox to all. It was a lovely Burgeoning Day on our end, which we spent amongst the buds and blossoms, being serenaded by the drumming of Grouse wings.

As we prepared an Ancestral Feast—which we hold on the Spirit Nights preceeding each of the Cardinal Sabbaths we observe—a small Moth flew to us and landed on our Votive Urn, where it stayed for most of the ritual. This felt quite propitious, since the moth represents an especially potent animal emissary of the Dead in our tradition.

As the veil between worlds grows thin, we honor and remember our ancestors and beloved dead. The Feast of the Dead, also known as Samhain, is a time to honor those who have passed on and to acknowledge the cycle of life and death.

Here are some ways to celebrate the Feast of the Dead:

🕯️ Create an ancestor altar: Set up a special altar space with photos, candles, and offerings for your ancestors and loved ones who have passed on.

🕯️ Hold a dumb supper: A dumb supper is a silent meal where you set a place for your ancestors and invite them to join you. Eat in silence and listen for any messages or signs they may send.

🕯️ Offerings: Offer food, drink, or other items to your ancestors and loved ones as a way of honoring their memory and showing gratitude.

🕯️ Divination: The veil between worlds is thinnest during Samhain, making it a powerful time for divination and receiving messages from the other side.

🕯️ Rituals and spells: Use this time to connect with the energies of death and rebirth, and to release any old patterns or beliefs that are holding you back.

Remember, the Feast of the Dead is a time to honor and connect with our ancestors and loved ones who have passed on. Take some time to reflect on their memories, their impact on your life, and the lessons they may have left behind. May they continue to guide and support us on our spiritual journey.

PERSONALLY (read that again), I (read THAT again) am not invested in sanitizing Hoodoo or making Hoodoo seem less “scary” to outsiders (including Black outsiders).

I am not invested in attempting to convince people that on this journey, they won’t be scared of some of the things they see/experience. Depending on your gifts, destiny, and spiritual lineage, as well as your personal threshold for being “scared”, you just might see some shit that scares you! You might! Hell, I been seeing spirits for YEARS and still get startled! That shit be scary sometimes! Not because they are here to harm me, but just because I wasn’t expecting to see Big Momma standing in the kitchen when I get up at 2 am to go to the bathroom 🤣

I’m tired of seeing people on the internet tryna convince folks that this shit don’t be a little spooky sometimes!

Sometimes you gotta go to the cemetery.

Sometimes you gotta sacrifice an animal.

Sometimes you gotta go stand at the crossroads in the middle of the night.

And that shit be scary! But it’s for your liberation. And if you let fear keep you from liberation, then Hoodoo ain’t for you (and that’s ok too. Contrary to popular belief, Hoodoo ain’t for everybody, even if they’re Black.*)

*NOTICE: I didn’t say “working with your ancestors ain’t for everybody”. THAT is something that every Black person should be doing. Hoodoo expands beyond that. The ancestors are our foundation, always. And they are the ones that guide us (via elders, etc.) into the mysteries of Hoodoo. Simply having an ancestor altar doesn’t mean you’re automatically practicing Hoodoo (AND👏🏾THAT’S👏🏾OK👏🏾).

Also this goes without saying but I’m gon say it again: HOODOO IS NOT AND WILL NEVER BE FOR NON-BLACK PEOPLE

I could feel the ancestors beaming and calling out in this space that beautifully honors the memories of so many heroes and brings forward the names and stories of many we may not know. I took some pictures of favorites including a “voodoo doll” gifted by Oprah Winfrey, a powerful quote from W. E. B. Du Bois, a section on the African roots of rice culture and the Gullah Geechee peoples (part of my personal heritage), and a list of online resources for doing your own genealogy research. The museum even has an “Explore Your Family History Center” where you can you can delve into digital resources related to family history, including the Freedmen’s Bureau digital archives (access online here: http://fbsearch.nmaahc.si.edu/), and receive expert guidance on how to conduct genealogical research and oral history interviews. Constructing and caring for our ancestor altars is very important, but it’s also the beginning and most foundational part of the ancestor work that needs to be done for our ancestors, our ourselves, our families, and our communities. Ancestral work can mean so much more, including creating and engaging with community spaces like this that honor our culture and history AND empower us to do that on a personal level too. If you have the opportunity to record family stories and history, make family trees, do research, conduct interviews with your elders and document it, that in itself is also sacred work. Our family lines are so powerful and so important to be kept in our memory and into the future. And we are surrounded by future ancestors in the living elders, parents, aunts and uncles and others around us - and even in ourselves. It's a children's movie but it is very detailed in the importance of knowing your ancestors. In the Mexican culture they are huge on celebrating their ancestors and they have festivals. "The Day of The Dead" a day after Halloween. It sounds creepy to some if you are new to this but they are celebrating their DNA and lineages. Around that time the veil is thin for the spirits. It's a high vibrational celestial time. I had to find another movie for my toddler to watch because he will watch this movie 5 times a day. He loves the colors in it and music. This coming weekend I will be in Mississippi and flying in through New Orleans. I will be in New Orleans for just a little while for a few things.
