Hey Jalebi. How are you? I discovered your blog last year while rewatching IPKKND. Your and Phati-Sari's blogs are my favorite. Both of your blogs were really helpful in clearing some of my confusions that I always had regarding the show.
As you recently answered a question regarding Lavanya. I wanted to ask you a question about Lavanya's track. You don't have to answer if you have already answered it before. I couldn't find anything regarding this in the blog so I am asking. I recently re watched those episode where La n Arnav had their first break up and then he brought her back. I couldn't understand what Arnav was thinking bringing her back to his house. Cause from their previous argument it was obvious their relationship has changed. Even though when they started the relationship they were both on the same page. Now they both want different things from the relationship. Lavanya wouldn't have settled for anything less than marriage and Arnav wouldn't marry her. So they did the right thing by breaking up. But when he brought her back, I am sure it only raised La's hope and his family's too. La and his family thought that he must have changed his decision about marraige. But that wasn't the case. His and Lavanya's relationship was stuck in a loop, there was no going forward unless he wants to marry her. So why did he even brought her back when he clearly wasn't thinking about marraige? What was he planning to do exactly?
Btw I am glad to find someone who has same opinion as me about BD. I thought I was the only one who didn't enjoy the show. It's really sad though because I loved Barun n Ridhi in Asur and was really excited to watch them in a romantic show. But I felt they had more chemistry in Asur than this show. How did you find Kohrra?
Hello Anon!
Thank you for the love <3 <3 <3
Regarding Arnav and Lavanya; Arnav brought her back for two reasons - for Khushi and his family. The wonderful thing about IPK is that it's never direct, it's not going to spoon-feed you what every character is feeling so the audience gets a lot of room to interpret everything.
In my opinion, bringing back La showed Khushi that Arnav does have a heart
Tumblr media
and his family was distressed without La. Apart from Nani - whose opinion Arnav doesn't really care about - everyone loves La and Arnav is actually content seeing his family at piece as now La and his family have become a unit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anjali comes up to Arnav and tells him one thing - "I'm so happy you did this Chote," and that means everything for Arnav - his Di's happiness.
Tumblr media
But he is incredibly conflicted with Khushi's tears because he did what she wanted and she's still hurt, and yes - Arnav and La's relationship had irreparable damage and you can see from this point onwards Arnav has no commitment - nothing - towards La. Also this is the point where he actively begins to emotionally cheat on her.
He's more concerned about Khushi, his world starts revolving around her. La just doesn't exist. Up until this point La was an active person in his life. Even in their argument they're fighting like a couple and post the breakup everything disappears between Arnav and La.
They don't talk. They don't fight. They don't laugh... nothing.
And Lavanya panics, she knows everything has changed - she panics further when Khushi decides to leave because Khushi being here is a reminder that Lavanya is being 'groomed' to be a bahu - without Khushi, La needs to face the reality of being a part of this family without a buffer and actually being Mrs. Arnav Singh Raizada. Which is a cold, empty identity of being a man's wife who is invested in... nothing.
But still, love makes one choose the worst decisions and she decided to still come back because at least she's in Arnav's house. It's a sad decision.
For Arnav, marriage with Lavanya is a practical decision and it would've ultimately been that. Lavanya truly loves the family and vice versa (he's genuinely happy seeing both parties care for each other) and it puts Nani away from his back and Lavanya is someone who understands Arnav (even though he no longer understands himself).
Tumblr media
So it's a perfect compromise (he doesn't realize how shitty he is as a partner until it's too late - he jolts into reality when during Satyanarayan Puja La was happy because he didn't yell at her and it's a slap on his face on wtf is he as a partner).
And yeah, Kohrra was fab! Just really some solid storytelling tbh.
Best,
Jalebi

Bandage to the Heart | Part - 2
<<part - 1
"You have grown up so much. Whatever will I do without you in this place after today?"
"Nothing. You would do nothing without me", said Khushi sensing incoming waterworks.
"Jiji, I stay barely half an hour away from Shantivan. And Holi is just a handful of days away. Even after that we'll visit each other at least once a week. Kya pata without me you might burn this place down" she finished fake-haughtily.
Payal chuckled wiping a tear.
"Once a week hi kyun? That won't be enough. I'd want to check on others in the family too. Just in case they get dabao-fied under your tyranny."
"Sundays for Nani-ji, Mondays - Anjali-ji, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for Mama-ji and Mami-ji. Thursdays for Nanheji and Fridays for poor Jijaji."
"And whom did you mark Saturdays for? Laxmi-ji?" asked Payal, now laughing.
"Woh toh I've saved for Laad-Governor, woh kya hain, it's the weekend and he won't be busy preparing for Mondays like he does on Sundays - and I can make him sit and watch Salman Khan ji's movies with me." her hands busy with her lehenga again and eyes glittering with dreams of Dum Aloo and the Dabaang series with her Darling Singh Raizada.
"Huh?"
"huh?"
"Haan.. movies with Arnavji, Satsang with Mamiji, disco with Hari Prakash ji. All very realistic possibilities. He-he" she tried saving the situation.
"Jiji, bahut baatein karti ho. Tumhe aaj shaadi karni hain ki nahin?" throwing the lehenga and jewelry onto the bed, she scrambled to reach for the door.
"I'll go check on Amma & Buaji, they must have gotten ready by now. They might need an extra hand with setting down the madap ka samaan" and off she ran leaving Payal with a curious expression on her face.
Now that her Arnavji was back on her mind, she allowed herself a shy smile. She had grown used to her dhak-dhak in the past few days. It actually feels weirdly lonely without it paired with the 'acidity'. The bindi he used earlier to do his bidding sat warmly between her brows. It was the same one she put on this morning but with his little gesture, it felt.. she felt - very different. She touched it and thought back to the way he made his intention very clear. Are they the same pair they were a few weeks ago?
"Na tumhari shakal dekhni hai, na tumse koi baat karni hai"
Yet he seemed weirdly angry when he thought he would never get to see her face again. Was it her fault he mistook that she got into an accident? He shook her and shook her more that evening, snapping at her when she started to go with Nanheji again. Fumed as he drove the car ~slowly~ to bring her back. Yelled at her when she cut her arm with the bangles of the wrong size. Did not hesitate to give his input on which saree she should select for herself this morning.
Laad Governer kahin ke. Khushi rolled her eyes fondly.
"Na hi hum aapse baat karna chahte, aur na hi aapki shakal dekhna chahte"
But she made a fool of herself flitting around Shantivan, kicking herself for asking Devi Maiyya to take him away from her sight. She couldn't sit peacefully by her Jiji, got a hasty mehendi design to get it over with so she could step away from all prying eyes and ring his phone incessantly. She had asked Anjali ji once, Nani-ji next if he was back yet. 3 hours? She had counted all 10,800 seconds. She played a dangerous gamble holding the phone close while apologizing profusely for wishing she could never see him again. He looked delicious though, waving the voicemail right in her face. A proud smirk on his lips appeared as he noticed his 'A' on her palm and her brains were F-R-I-E-D. Maybe sometimes for this very purpose, she secretly liked it when he caught her being an idiot.
Lost in her thoughts her feet carried her up the stairs of this now very familiar house which almost felt like her own.
"Khushi ji!" called OP after her. He ran up to the study where she was standing with an envelope in his hand.
"Are you going up Khushi ji? Can you please give this to Anjali Didi? I have to check on the drinks and snacks being served to the guests" Khushi smiled and took the envelope from his hand that had some diagnostic lab name written on it. OP vanished through the side hallway into the kitchen thanking the nice girl in his head.
Khushi reached the first floor landing with eyes still out for her Arnavji. Should she go to his room? Was he in there? What excuse could she make up to see his face?
The door to Anjali ji's room was open to the far right end and she willed herself into that direction instead. Her dear friend who is almost like a sister was beside herself with joy the past few days, arranging everything to her brand of perfection. Khushi closed a fist and knocked on the door when she reached there before she putting a tentative foot inside.
"Anjali ji.." Khushi peeked into the room to make sure the dung beetle Shyam wasn't there. Instead, she saw the man from her thoughts with his head on his Di's lap, and she…
"ANJALI JI!!"

Best Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Specialist Doctor in India - Dr. Ravinder Singh Rao
Tumblr media
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) has revolutionized the treatment of aortic valve stenosis, providing a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery. In India, one of the foremost experts in TAVI is Dr. Ravinder Singh Rao, whose expertise and dedication have positioned him as a leading specialist in this field.
Understanding Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, also known as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), is a cutting-edge procedure designed to replace a diseased aortic valve without the need for open-heart surgery. This procedure is particularly beneficial for patients who are considered high-risk for conventional surgery due to age, frailty, or other medical conditions.
During TAVI, a new valve is delivered via a catheter inserted through a small incision in the leg or chest. The procedure is performed under imaging guidance, allowing precise placement of the new valve. The TAVI procedure offers a faster recovery time, reduced pain, and lower risk of complications compared to traditional surgery.
Why Choose TAVI?
The primary advantage of TAVI over traditional valve replacement surgery lies in its minimally invasive nature. Patients who undergo TAVI typically experience:
Shorter Hospital Stays: Most patients are able to return home within a few days.
Quicker Recovery: The recovery period is significantly shorter, enabling patients to resume their normal activities sooner.
Reduced Risk of Complications: The minimally invasive approach reduces the risk of infection, bleeding, and other complications associated with open-heart surgery.

A Promise...Part 1
I'll be there...Always
>>>>><<<<<
Tumblr media
Sajna hai mujhe sajna ke liye
Teej's celebration started with girls dressing up for the event. Anjali, La, and above all Khushi and Payal, all they were getting ready for their partners either at the time or the future ones. I hated the fact when Shyam sees Khushi before Arnav...but it was setting up the future events that will happen before our eyes.
Tumblr media
But the girls were really happy, if one side Anjali was dressed in red, with all the jewelry then other side Khushi did the same. The difference was Anjali added a Sindoor, manglsutre and Khushi was without it...what a catch, as when she gets married Arnav just gives her Sindoor and Manglsutre as unintentionally they had done all the rituals...That was the beauty of underlined layers of IPK and this marriage.
Tumblr media
Arnav looks at her and he turns to his Di and gives her a look like he is saying… really? Anjali looks back at him with pursed lips and confirms his question as she did try her best. I must say Arnav's eyes did admire La momentarily and saved the insecure girl from disappointment.
The other side parallel scene appeared when Anjali noticed that her Platter [thaal] was missing and started panicking. She was worried that something would go wrong... She is extreme and phobic in such cases, well her brother was ready to order a new platter for her.
I must say Arnav's expressions are something to look for in this episode before Khushi's arrival...First hearing Anjali's logic for having the same platter and the second one after seeing La in the temple.
Tumblr media
Arnav forgets about his Di and her worries for the moment. He even forgets the morning events when she didn't let him talk or clear his side… and continued gazing at her. He was stunned. This is the second time he was seeing her in saree after the red saree photo shoot.
She looks up at him and holds his gaze. She too is unable to break that gripping and engrossing eye contact. But she gets flustered and mutters to herself… "What is he doing here as he doesn’t believe in God."... She stands there nonplussed.
Tumblr media
It was impossible for both to deny this strong and unfathomable feeling. His constant smoldering gaze was holding her racing heartbeat and she was so aware of it too but pretends to be calm. Huge mountains can crumble before love, as Nani will say later on Holi...is happening here. The walls of his self-created armored fortress were breaking each day, and one night the fall of it will bound to be painful, even though the roots of love will be stronger than ever.
He turns away and moves elsewhere to make a call and Payal goes to find Anjali to return the platter. Khushi makes an excuse that she wants to buy some bangles but in fact, she wanted to stay away from him.
"hume bas woh arnav singh raizada ke aas paas aana nahin hai..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Khushi starts feeling dizzy as she has been without food and water all day. She takes a couple of steps ahead and starts to sway…Somehow he senses that and looks for her. He turns and notices that she is getting dizzy and is about to fall.  He looks worried and bolts towards her. The platter clangs to the floor, just like this morning when she'd bumped into him and smeared themselves with indoor. We can almost echo that scene here, but earlier she refused his touch and help, and now it is not in her hands.
He manages to hold her arm just in time to stop her from falling. She faints completely but somehow he balances her on her foot with him holding her hand…
Tumblr media
After a couple of moments realizing people around them and their eyes at her, all he wanted to do, just to cover her with his demeanor. He wanted to take her away from all eyes. He draws her close, puts her arm around his neck, lifts her up in his arms as if he has full rights over her. A sense of commitment he holds for her. His eyes never leave her while lifting her up in his arms and looks at her tenderly and so lovingly. Simply a Beautiful scene with Rabba Ve.

Kissi larki se koi farq nahin padta...
well...we can see and feel that.
Iss Pyar ko kya naam doon.

IPK Rewatch: Ep 04; who writes our fates?
The episodes picks up from where we had left off previously, with a frantic and impulsive Khushi running behind the ASR, making him stop. With today's episode, we start the journey into the first two promos of the show. (The promo with Khushi saying she makes her own clothes and people matter more than money whilst ASR priorities appearances, and the second one posted in the very first post.)
The biggest divide between the two has not been their lifestyles, but their moral code, their beliefs. Khushi blends with the Raizadas very well especially Anjali and Nani which lets us believe that Khushi might have gotten along with Ratna quite well as well. Khushi stands steadfast in front of Arnav and his look of intimidation. This is one of the very few times where when he moves forward, she doesn't take a step back. It's also representative of in my opinion, of what he refuses to budge against. Her beliefs and her self-respect is something she wouldn't be intimidated easily from.
Arnav's "kya kiya main ne?" is insightful of his cheekiness, his entitlement, and reeking arrogance. The thing is, that the person who asks her this questions wasn't ASR, it was Arnav switching in and out of his persona with Khushi, and Arnav will be regretting the realisation - and the effect Khushi has on him that makes him switch between his personas as much.
I also love Khushi's sandals slipping out of her feet, specifically I think the left feet concisely as she walked behind him, ran behind him and then away from him. Khushi's path towards Arnav is filled with pain. It's often observed that and bare left feet means awaiting sorrow and that does seem to be the case for Khushi at least. If Arnav is restless at him not seeing Khushi on occasions later onwards, then Khushi looks for excuses to be around him while denying that she does so, to see him.
What I think pisses Arnav off is that while Khushi points at his arrogance, and his attitude of getting his way or creating terrible circumstances when he doesn't get his own way, whatever happened between them was not solely him. We see this belief translating into her conversation with Payal later when she points at everything happening for a reason. She remarks at Arnav as well that even the decisions he thinks he is making for himself are being taken by him because of how Devi Mayyian is guiding him. She remarks at his lack of gratitude instead of affirming that he has accomplished everything on his own.
However Arnav is quick to respond with a classic comeback, of pain wouldn't be existing if God was present. The exchange on pain, and God providing us with aids to heal the pain is a classic exchange between someone who finds themselves aligned to religion because it has been their biggest source of comfort , and someone who decides to move away from everything as a reactionary. Whilst Arnav had behavioural issues growing up even when his parents were alive, it is Arnav's displeasure with everything that his family stood for which make it easy for him to embrace everything opposite of what they believe in.
Before the last sentences exchanged between the two, he tells her to not come in his way again. Coincidentally, the next time they meet one another is when she collides with his car!
Khushi's last words to him echo within him that no one is in control besides Devi Mayyian. Not even Arnav Singh Raizada and this starts the cat and mouse challenges between them. To show whose in-charge, he makes sure the clip of a girl like him, in arms of a man like him is circulated to all news channel. Oh Arnav bitwa, if only you hadn't! If only! - it's funny that this one action of his sends the person already living with the Raizadas to save this girl whose clearly been caused distress because of Arnav/Saale Sahib
Absolutely love Khushi and Payal's bond with their conversation. I sorely missed their little banters, and moments of assurance after their wedding.
One of the few lines I loved in this interaction was Payal asking where did the pearls disappear, and if a crow took them away. kawa udda le gaya kya? crows are insightful, curious, misunderstood creatures. They symbolises magic, transformation, and change. There is also a common superstition that arrival of crows means arrival of a guest. The reason for adverse transformation awaiting Khushi's life is the one who took those pearls away. That person, earlier in the day made sure that the change would shake Khushi's life.
It is after this Khushi berates Arnav Singh Raizada. She refers to him as Laad Governor for the first tike in front of Payal. Not many people are aware of this name which later turns into a term of endearment but Payal before Akash is privy to these change in Khushi's life. Payal is also one of the few people to be able to differentiate between Khushi being Khushi, or Khushi lying. In telling about the encounter earlier, I love how she calls her to-be husband whose a diabetic, barfi ka tukra! how ironic. Barfi in general is made from sweet condensed milk which is a symbol of fertility. That is what Arnav is for his family and loved ones. He takes on the responsibility of being a provider, of being a protector. Correlation of people with food plays an important role in the show throughout. It also reflects Khushi's unconscious feelings about that person. For now, Arnav has made a spot in her heart for himself without intending to and Khushi has willingly given him that space just for the ruckus he's caused. With Payal's clarification of her being upset at a partner like Abhishek, Khushi isn't doesn't necessarily blame Arnav either this point forward. She blames herself for taking on the responsibility and leaving without informing others. This is a streak within Khushi where her insecurities of being overtly impulsive rise. Later she doesn't blame Arnav for misunderstanding Shyam and her. She blames herself for not sharing the information with him.
In contrast to the scene between the sisters, we finally see the brothers interact with one another. Clearly there is a comfort level between the two and an easy, playful, camaraderie. We see Arnav yelling at someone for minor mistakes and it's established Arnav striving for perfectionism is reflective of his need for control at all times.
I love how Akash after sharing about the photographer stopping the shoot says "aab toh usse koi nahi bacha sakta" and the scene cuts to Khushi saying she has her Devi Mayyian. Devi Mayyian does protect Khushi from everyone but Arnav, however it's Arnav as Khushi says who eventually ends up needing Devi Mayyian's favourite child to be his saviour when he's kidnapped. It's also him who bows in front of Khushi instead of the other way around.
Roop Suhana Lagta hai is Payal's song. I think with both the sisters' and brothers' scene running parallel, the song provides an insight into what lays the foundation for Payal's relationship alongside Khushi's. After all, Akash ji loses his heart in first sight.
The mother daughter finally unite after Khushi urging Amma to call her, her daughter. I am pretty sure laho peti ho roughly means sucking the life/blood out of someone, and Khushi can often inadvertently become a reason for the Guptas to find themselves exhausted. However all is well when Khushi exercises her right over Garima and Garima admitting the same.
Shashi walks in, into the reunion of mothers and daughters and we get an insight into how wonderfully happy this small family is together. This is in quite contrast to what we will eventually see with Raizadas whose happiness appears to be a facade threatening to break until the arrival of their bahus into their house and the exit of their damad who had been holding everyone together.
Later Khushi gets called out by Shashi as they leave the house and Bua ji back home. Bua ji doubling down on Khushi is a common theme all throughout. As much as she adores her, she also makes sure ti be equally tough on her. I think one of the reason her harshness is more prominent with Khushi is because how obedient Payal is. Payal is the perfect daughter, Guptas could've imagined where as Khushi is chutki, Sanka-devi, a bit spoilt, given leeway to help outside with her father, and allowed to be rude to others on occasion which the youngest of the households get the reigns to be. Garima allowing Khushi to run her mouth with kaka ji later gives us a peek into that. I absolutely love that!
We finally meet the deva-esque photographer who clearly has no idea who he is dealing with however the way few people talk to Arnav despite how he forces people to perceive him shows us that Arnav is indeed someone new to the industry whose been fortunate enough to get amazing success. If ASR is really who he lets us believe he is, there wouldn't have been payment issues. He would've also fired the person and gotten a replacement in an instant however Arnav settles by humiliating the man working for him.
the photographer here is unhappy with his payment plans.> I think these were suppose to allude to the past that they ended up changing in the narrative later so technically me decoding it is useless. The person who is aware of the entire truth is unhappy with the lack of their truth being acknowledged.
kis kheeth ka gajr hai > how are you so prosperous? the mysterious persona makes a comeback and begs how the Maliks who wronged others. had their children prosper despite being driven out of their homes.
mooli hai, not gajar > mooli or radish’s symbolise quarrel and the former narrative, that the show changed later onwards was about the big quarrel between Chacha ji and Malik Sr. Carrots on the other hand symbolise prosperity and happiness within family. Whatever happened in the past would’ve included facades of happiness but we all know now to some extent that the brothers were quarrelling, the heir to the house was thrown out and ASR is the repersonaification of that spiteful younger Malik son. These interpretations do not matter as much now as they wiped off Shyam’s backstory and Chacha ji later because of fans’ demand to not separate the couple on the wedding day but goddammit what a fruitful foundation they laid! Carrots also symbolise end goal. ASR thinks he’s met the lifelong, he’s put the past away. Now that is far from the truth because the true past comes in form of Khushi. Just when he didn’t expect it, the truth pushes him just like how just as he opened his eyes, Khushi (his happiness) fell into his arms.
jis uchai par mein kada hoon wahan kutton ke bohnkne ke awaz nahi pohonchti > ASR is a rising name of the industry and he's reminding the photographer to not forget how he could potentially change the entire field. I think this is decoding of the tracks being laid out. ASR loses to Khushi, but Arnav wins until Khushi is ready to accept ASR's win. It can indicate how unbothered Arnav is as long as the cost of anything changes into his success. The juxtaposition between wins and loses of ASR and Arnav with Khushi are incredibly important. ASR never falls for Khushi until after Lavanya and after coming back from kidnapping. However, it’s Arnav (Arnav Malik) who falls for Khushi for the first moment, whose love surpasses condition despite laying them.
asli aukat > too many people today have tried telling ASR his aukat today , but really what is his aukat. what was going to be his place in the past?
discount ka kam > Akash's expressions and eyes dart towards Arnav at the term discount being used.
The man doesn't receive a slap, a full palm slap until he brings up Arnav's mother. 50,000 signifies the failing of totality and inability to excel in destiny however the 20 Million for the slaps signify that ultimately, regardless of the past, the duality of forces of love will strengthen Arnav's position enough to be able to make sure that the narrative sways in his favour. the twice 4 zeros are also numbers which hold the spiritual power of bringing soulmates who are twin flames together. And we all know, that with Khushi by Arnav's side, the past that we eventually find out about removes the stain from Garima's reputation and frees Anjali of the man who had been using her as a pawn.
The episodes ends with a relative calling Gotmi Sadan to inform Shashi about the news which is a call picked up by Bua ji. Bua ji saying that yahan toh yeh pora ka pora baghicha khila de rahi adds a perfect layer of how Khushi's encounter with Arnav leads the girls of Gupta house to their eventual rajkummars.
In the market, Khushi has become the talk of the town with people readily able to identify her. An exciting journey awaits us as the next player of this game joins us in the next episode.

Top 10 Hindi Performances of 2019
December 27, 2019
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
1. Manoj Pahwa - Article 15
Tumblr media
It is simple to play the good guy. When your thoughts align with the character’s moral compass, it isn’t too difficult to step into his/her shoes. But when playing an antagonist, it is impossible to blend into the character with the same seamless effort. In Article 15, Bhramadatt Sing, played by Manoj Pahwa, is the main antagonist. Not only is he a villainous character, he is also a realistic representation of a certain section of people who exist in society, people who take advantage of caste discrimination to commit crimes. In this case, Pahwa had to understand the character without allowing his own views to dilute it. With his performance, he manages to create a sense of appalled disbelief towards his character. There is no point at which his behavior and actions do not disgust the audience. Even before the character is revealed to be the main inciter of violence, his biased actions already predispose the audience to dislike him. Sing is that character that people want to believe doesn’t exist, but is in fact present all around. And Pahwa portrays this horrifying character with full sincerity.
2. Siddhant Chaturvedi - Gully Boy
Tumblr media
Who knew that this young boy with no claim to fame except for a supporting role in a web series would become a sudden Internet sensation? When selected for the role of MC Sher in Gully Boy, Siddhant Chaturvedi probably had no idea his character would gain a cult following, superseding the film’s popularity. But Sher isn’t typical. The hero’s friend normally isn’t recognized, constantly living in the hero’s shadow. Sher, however, doesn’t let Murad dominate any of the scenes they have together, and Siddhant Chaturvedi’s performance supports this balance. He does not let himself get overwhelmed by his co-star, Ranveer Singh’s, 8 year long experience in films. At least he doesn’t show it. Despite having no background in rap, Chaturvedi’s rapping style is filled with the passion and force of an experienced rapper. He not only perfects the lingo, he makes people believe in him as a rapper, a friend, and a mentor. Unlike the clichéd companion, threatened by his friend’s rise in popularity, Sher is Murad’s supportive backbone. The nuanced creation of this character shows Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s brilliance in writing. But without a talented actor, like Siddhant Chaturvedi, it would have been impossible to bring this character to life.
3. Gulshan Devaiah - Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota
Tumblr media
While very common in the 1970s and 1980s, the double role has become a rare phenomenon in Indian cinema today. As the film industry has developed, it has become far more difficult for an actor to play two different characters in the same film convincingly. The most recent use of this concept was in Aurangzeb, with Arjun Kapoor playing twin brothers on opposite sides of the law. But this was a commercial and critical failure mainly due to Kapoor’s inability to create a distinction between the characters. Like the characters in Aurangzeb, Gulshan Devaiah’s characters in Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota are at the two opposite ends of the spectrum. Mani is Supri’s guru and Surya’s hero, while Jimmy is his disgruntled twin brother. Devaiah’s performance controlled the conflict in the film. If he wasn’t able to convince the audience of the distinction between the personalities of his two characters, and of the enmity between them, Surya and Supri’s fight would seem futile. Devaiah has both the villainous smile and the innocent eyes that bring out the contrast between the two brothers, making the conflict strong, and the film worthwhile.
4. Rasika Dugal - Hamid
Tumblr media
In Kashmir, there are many women labeled “Half Widows” because their husbands have disappeared (many taken by the army under suspicion), and they have no information on whether these men are alive or not. Rasika Dugal plays one such woman, Ishrat, who deals with her husband’s disappearance while trying to raise her son away from the negative influences of extremist violence in Kashmir. As the only member of the cast (apart from the soldiers), that isn’t Kashmiri, Dugal had to put in twice the effort to perfect the mannerisms and diction of Kashmiri Muslims. With the fluency of her enactment, it didn’t seem at any moment as if she was acting. But getting into character is just one aspect of a good performance. It is also necessary to create an emotional connect with the audience. The topic is such that just the simple facial expression of exhaustion was enough to captivate the audience. The years and years of wait have completely drained Ishrat, and she has lost the strength to even cry. The lightness with which Dugal played this role is remarkable and befitting to a serious film like this.
5. Geetika Vidya Ohlyan and Saloni Batra - Soni
Tumblr media
For the first time, I am clubbing two actors together in the best performance list, as neither would be complete without the other. Soni is a film that thrives on the chemistry between the two female leads, as they both deal with different levels of sexism in their daily lives as police officers. The two characters, Soni, played by Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, and Kalpana, played by Saloni Batra, are two sides of the same coin. They both have different personalities that reflect in their work. Soni’s temperamental, rebellious persona is balanced by Kalpana’s thoughtful, controlled nature. But these contrasting personalities come together in pursuit of a similar goal, to stand up for woman empowerment. As a subtle take on sexism, the film required nuanced acting to recognize the inherent sexism present in the lives of all women. Ohlyan and Batra beautifully portray the struggle of women in their professional and personal lives, further supported by their chemistry. One cannot exist without the other. Together, the two women form the crux of the film.
6. Yami Gautam - Bala
Tumblr media
In her seven year Hindi film career, Yami Gautam hasn’t had much success. While she was delightful in her first film, Vicky Donor, her roles after that were limited. The films in which she had a lead role, such as Total Siyappa and Sanam Re, were critical and commercial failures. She spent the remainder of the time playing supporting roles in films such as Batti Gul Meter Chalu and Uri, in which there wasn’t much scope for her to showcase her talent. With the release of Bala, the expectations from Yami Gautam weren’t as high as they were from her co-stars, Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar, who have generated a considerable fan base with their consistent work in the past few years. But, Gautam outshone them both. Her performance as Pari Mishra, Bala’s love interest who is a model and Tik Tok star, is the highlight of the film. The film is a heartfelt, socially moving story told in a dramatic manner. Therefore it is necessary for the actors to create a balance between the two worlds: the realistic and the unrealistic. As a former Indian television actor, Yami Gautam knows exactly how to maintain this balance. Indian television is not just a platform for dramatic overacting, as many believe it to be. It’s a balance between scenes involving overdramatic tension and those with nuanced conversation. Pari’s identity as a Tik Tok star, means that her mannerisms in everyday life are much more dramatic than normal, but when everything settles down, she has the ability to have a normal conversation. Yami Gautam displayed this dichotomy with perfection. And now she has become the most appreciated aspect of the film.
7. Priyanka Chopra - The Sky is Pink
Tumblr media
After a three-year break from acting in Hindi films, Priyanka Chopra is back with a bang. In The Sky is Pink, she plays the mother of a young girl diagnosed with a life threatening disease. Such a role is not only emotionally draining, it is also physically strenuous, as she has to step into the shoes of the real life Aditi Chaudhary. She has to be faithful to her, especially when it pertains to such a sensitive topic. Priyanka Chopra fully imbibes this role. She beautifully portrays the emotions of a distressed mother and at the same time a wife struggling to keep her marriage intact in the face of death. At first it seems difficult to imagine her as the mother of a teenage daughter, but the chemistry she shares with Zaira Wasim, playing her daughter, Aisha Chaudhary, leads to a passionate mother-daughter relationship, that completes the film.
8. Shahid Kapoor - Kabir Singh
Tumblr media
When a film is remade, it is very difficult for the actors to live up to the expectations of the original. Shahid Kapoor steps into the shoes of Vijay Deverakonda, a Telugu superstar who delivered his career best performance in Arjun Reddy, the precursor to Kabir Singh. The passion and angst that Deverakonda brought into his performance is difficult to emulate. Which is why Kapoor doesn’t try to become Deverakonda. He does not attempt to match the original and instead brings his own flavor into the character, which sets Kabir Singh apart from Arjun Reddy. The one scene that perfectly demonstrates this is the Holi scene. In this scene, Kabir Singh is feeling a combination of emotions including anger, sadness, and passionate love, which all can be beautifully seen in his eyes. No other Hindi film actor can emote with his eyes the way Kapoor does. Even Deverakonda attempts this, but his performance in the scene in the Telugu version leans more towards anger and passion than pain. On the other hand, Kapoor portrays his character in this scene as painfully suffering bringing out another dimension in the character. This may not be the best performance that Kapoor has delivered in his career, but it definitely is his most impactful one.
9. Anjali Patil - Mere Pyaare Prime Minister
Tumblr media
In Mere Pyaare Prime Minister, Anjali Patil plays a single mother, traumatized after being assaulted while using an outdoor bathroom. Patil has always chosen roles that lean towards the unconventional route. While she has dabbled in multiple languages, her Hindi films have not been successful, and her performances in supporting roles barely noticeable. With this film, she is finally playing a strong role in a Hindi film. Her character is one that is in mental and emotional distress after experiencing such a horrendous crime, yet cannot express it as she still has to fulfill her duty as a single mother. The restraint that Patil brings into her performance is beautiful. It is reflective of the balance between the heaviness of the storyline and the lightness of the mother-son relationship. Though this is not as powerful a role as Patil has played earlier in other language films, it is still one that requires effort, as it is not easy to play a sexual assault victim, especially when that victim is also a mother.
10. Kangana Ranaut - Judgementall Hai Kya
Tumblr media
Kangana Ranaut is one actor that never fails to impress. With each performance, she exceeds her previous ones, making her one of the fastest growing actors in terms of talent. In Judgementall Hai Kya, she plays the feisty, socially awkward Bobby, whose mental health issues, make people disbelieve her when she claims an accident was actually a murder. The film was acclaimed for treating mental illness with sensitivity. At times in the film, the craziness of Bobby’s actions make her seem insane, which Ranaut does with perfection. But Ranaut is also able to show that the mental illness is a part of Bobby’s personality that does not make her abnormal, just different than normal.
Special Mention: Shweta Basu Prasad - Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota
