“Domesticating Masculinity and Masculinizing Domesticity in Contemporary U.S. Fatherhood Politics”: Anna Gavanas
Anna Gavanas presents numerous arguments towards the fathers of families. She presents how families have become feminized because of the head female/mother of the family tends to do most of the family work. This mainly includes care for the child or children. She shows how there are structural roles when it comes to family, along with how flexible roles are coming about. The mother tends to take care of the child while the father works and provides for the family is the structural view. The flexible view is to have an almost even amount of work when it comes to the family, mainly child care. From my understanding of this passage, men/fathers are trying to maintain there masculinity while also trying to family care. They do this by teaching their child (most likely the son) how to ‘fit roles’ using heterosexuality, sports, and religion/religious figures. Fathers should just care for their child in which ever way benefits the child. Both parents should do this. There shouldn’t be one single parent doing all or most of the family work, the work should be split evenly so it can maximize the healthiness of the family.

Domesticating Masculinity and Masculizing Domesticity in Contemporary U.S. Fatherhood Politics by Anna Gavanas
It was funny to me that men have a “Fatherhood Responsibility Movement” because technically the world “revolves” around them and i do not say that as in men run the world but more like life comes to them easier with opportunities and things like that than women. So why have a movement? When it comes to parenthood, men are usually deadbeats and leave the mother to fend for themselves. They are not usually home because they are either working or out with the boys. But i guess men are tired of being people in a category (funny cause women are always on one) and what to show that they can be nurturing people too besides the women. And can be part of their kids lives while still looking manly and being the dominant one in them family. The movement stated that men have been marginalized in the household and women were being more dominant. So men started standing up for themselves and were showing that they can keep up and do what they regularly could do while the women can stay in their lane.

Domesticating Masculinity and Masculinizing Domesticity in Contemporary U.S. Fatherhood Politics by Anna Gavanas
This article talks about how, in a family, there are certain roles that are taken on by different genders. Gavanas says that family is very feminized, most of the domestic roles are taken on by women. Women are “supposed to” cook, clean and take care of the children Gavanas also mentions how there are differences in the strictness by which some roles are taken on. Some roles are very stereotypically feminine, while some roles can be shared by both parents.

This particular reading has just got me scrutinizing my father even more.We live in a hispanic household with my sisters and I as first generation here in America. He’s the breadwinner and my mother just recently started working with is causing domestic house disputes. My father is a bit of a homophobe and prohetero relationships and any relationship should be viewed with marriage as a potential factor right away. Yes he is involved in sports, he’s a bit of a fanatic and plays softball himself but he doesn’t give us life lessons or bonds with us unless we decide to join what he’s doing.    My dad is always saying all you have in the end is your family but we barrly spend time with him either because he’s busy working or just cus he wants to do his own thing. I think its mainly since gender roles are heavily established in our culture that unless its the women deviating from her ‘job’ to aid her guy than dont expect much or be ridiculed.    Making masculinity more domestic and making it domestically masculine is a great idea but determining it by marriage, heterosexual/homosexual, sports and religion is a bit much. Yes that’s what males will partake and maybe adapt in more but it can work either way in them further shying away from the family.

Domesticating Masculinity
Anna Gavanas
Gavanas discusses the "fatherhood responsibility movement, FRM" which "simultaniously supports and resists feminist demands, reflecting the way U.S. family politics is tied to contestations around race, marriage, sexuality, and the legitimacy of different parenting arrangements" and "reinforces long-standing heteronormative elements in U.S. family politics" (p 248). In order to understand the FRM she included a statement from a promarriage representative from the FRM who stated that men should not be ashamed of their "manly ways" and when fathers who stay at home are being called "Mr. moms" it is insulting because they are doing their part to raise their children just as mothers are doing theirs. (p 8) The argument expresses that it is important for both parents to help out with the family whether it is by staying at home or by working and earning money; no mater who is doing those jobs they are only doing their best to help. In the end all someone can do for their family is give them the best environment to grow and prosper without being criticized by society.

"Domesticating Masculinity and Masculinity Domesticity in Contemporary U.S. Fatherhood Politics" by Anna Gavanas Reading Response
Since the dawn of femininity and masculinity it seems as if everyone's life revolves around those two factors. In Gavanas's article the FRM (fatherhood responsibility movement) has been trying to masculinity domesticity and domesticate masculinity because according to the FRM domestic chores and child care are seen essential to femininity. Since the rise of the market parenting has become extremely feminized up to the point where men do not engage in such behavior because it might reduce their masculinity.
Attributes such as masculinity and femininity create controversial movements over simple and rhetorical questions. In a heterosexual relationship, a child needs both the mother and father. Chores should often be separated, not by which is more masculine or feminine, but to ease the burden of the other party. When one parent has to work the other parent would be there for the child physically or emotionally. To turn parenting from a simple nurturing relationship from the parents to the child(ren) into a battlefield for masculinity and femininity is counter productive and illogical. A father should show the same amount of affection to the child as a mother and the mother should contribute the same amount of physical exercise with the child. There should not be any distinction between femininity and masculinity in parenthood. There should only be the parents and the child(ren).
