Fahardi’s statement on Executive Order 13780:
“I’m sorry I'm not with you tonight.  My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of the other six nations who have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S. Dividing the world into the us and our enemies categories creates fear, a deceitful justification for aggression and war. These wars prevent democracy and human rights in countries which themselves have been victims of aggression. Filmmakers can turn their cameras to capture shared human qualities and break stereotypes of various nationalities and religions. They create empathy between us and others -- an empathy that we need today more than ever."

The 2017 Oscars are quickly making history with each award. The first three winners of the evening were won by the most diverse recipients that we’ve seen in a very, very long time (or ever). And then on top of that, a powerful film with an even more powerful real-life component won for Best Foreign Film.
That’s why we need to talk about this important speech on behalf on Iranian director of “The Salesman”

TBT to the Oscars. How many of you spotted the startorial fashion when the award for Best Foreign Film was announced?
Iranian director, Asghar Farhadi, boycotted the ceremony over our president’s travel ban which targetted seven Muslim-majority countries. Instead, he reached out to Anousheh Ansari and asked her to accept the award and deliver a speech on his behalf. For those of you that don’t know, Ansari was the fourth space tourist and the only woman so far. You can read the full transcript of the speech she gave here.
Ansarai further underscored her (and Farhadi’s) message with her fashion. She accessorized her simple gown with a silk scarf featuring a NASA image of her hometown, Mashhad, Iran, from space. The scarf was made by Iranian-American designer Azin Valy. Valy’s company, Cityzen, makes not only scarves, but pocket squares, dresses, and bag featuring cities all over the world as seen from space. (Stay tuned for a feature post on Cityzen tomorrow!)
