It was one of the highlights of a highlight reel of an episode of Ahsoka, when C-3PO entered the chamber to speak on behalf of Senator Leia Organa and vouch for Hera Syndulla in her hour of need. To mark the occasion, Lucasfilm released this Threepio poster, and returning star Anthony Daniels had plenty to say. I was so pleased to shine briefly in the iconic Ahsoka - had such a perfect time with the lovely cast and crew on set, in the amazing Volume - and now, so touched by the kind comments from viewers who appreciated 3PO being there for the beloved princess. Thank you. Everyone. We discuss Dreams and Madness on the latest episode of Making Tracks reaction Chat which lands on Fantha Tracks Radio later tonight, and stay tuned over the weekend for our group review and Sunday nights episode of Good Morning Tatooine where Brian Cameron and co-host will go in-depth into the episode. Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003)
Tumblr media
Even though it disappointed repeatedly, the Star Wars prequel trilogy was worth it for 2007's animated micro-series Star Wars: Clone Wars. If you want to see a young Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan in awesome action sequences with character development and sights even the best special effects would struggle to bring to life, this offers it in spades. Stylish, action-packed, and teeming with memorable moments, this is the Star Wars you’ve been dreaming of.
From Genndy Tartakovsky - creator of Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory, and the animated segment of Priest (the only good part). Clone Wars is an animated anthology series that bridges the gap between Episodes II & III. Anakin Skywalker (voiced by Mat Lucas), Obi-Wan Kenobi (James Arnold Taylor), Mace Windu (T.C. Carson), and Grandmaster Yoda (Tom Kane) battle the armies and minions of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. As armadas of ships, legions of droids, and underwater militia clash, special op covert missions, fiendish monsters, ominous visions, and terrifying villains shape the future of the universe.
If you haven't heard of this series or dismissed it as a kid’s cartoon, you have no idea what you’re missing. This is no mere children’s entertainment, it’s Star Wars going back to its roots with a series of short adventures that tie together to make a gigantic story. There’s no way real-life actors or stuntmen/women would dare to pull off the moves we see here. They'd wind up digitally rendering people on digitally rendered background and at point... why not simply animate it all? This is the kind of story that shows what animation is best suited for. Atmosphere is generated through Tartakovsky's simplified color pallets and character designs. Nothing stands out as artificial, because it's entirely artificial. If you thought General Grievous was a pretty cool character in Revenge of the Sith, you haven’t seen anything yet, at best he’s a mere shadow of what you will witness here.
When it first aired, I fell in love with Clone Wars because of the cool villains and visual carnage. These depictions of Count Dooku, Darth Sidious, and the new foes introduced are instant favorites. The battles are varied and dynamic. This time, I was struck by the character arcs, particularly Anakin Skywalker's because of how much is done with the visuals. This is a confidently directed piece by someone who understands the power of silence. It’s so much more impressive to see a group of Clone Troopers take down an opponent by communicating with only hand signals than it is with them shouting orders at each other. Instead of actors, it's the animators doing the storytelling through the characters’ body movement. Anything extraneous has been trimmed out and tossed away to deliver a lean and satisfying epic.
This is a “movie” that no one will be able to agree upon because inevitably, the question of “What was the best part” will come up and everyone will have a different opinion. Will it be Mace Windu standing alone against impossible odds? The first encounter with General Grievous? The space battle whose uneven odds are tipped in the underdog's favor thanks to superior strategy? How about Kit Fisto in a prolonged underwater war, Anakin in a mission that would test his strength like none other before, or that part where Count Dooku and… well I don’t want to spoil it.
I do have some criticisms, and I know they’ll sound unfair. Technically, this is not a movie, but I’m judging it as if it was. It’s because it’s that good. Other television shows would struggle to stand next to it because it accomplishes so much in so little time. Star Wars: Clone Wars is only 2 hours long but it packs in as much as my favorite series’ do in an entire season-spanning arc. (On DVD, December 4, 2015)

#MEFCC2023: Anthony Daniels Anthony has the curious distinction of being the only actor to perform in all eleven Star Wars movies, including Rogue One and his seminal performance as Tak in Solo. He has written about his exploits, after reluctantly meeting George Lucas forty-eight years ago, in his first book, I Am C- 3PO – The inside story, currently translated from the original English into Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean, leaving just under 5,995 languages to go. You’ve read the book, now meet the author - the man inside the golden droid, C-3PO. FUN FACTS! 1. Anthony had initially rejected his role and turned down a meeting with George Lucas before reconsidering. 2. His favourite part of portraying C3PO was in the voice acting and In Concert roles. 3. The C3PO suit he wore in The Rise of The Skywalker was 3D Printed for comfort. 4. He's the only actor to be involved in all 9 movies in the Skywalker Saga. He was roaming around the convention and I never got the chance to have a selfie with him. 😫 #MiddleEastFilmandComicCon #MEFCC #MEFCC2024 #jazperjay #jazperjayphotography #DavaoPhotographer #DubaiPhotographer #DavaoBloggers #PinoyPhotographer #DubaiBlogger #ADNEC #Dubai #AbuDhabi #UAE #UnitedArabEmirates #instadaily #instagood #AnthonyDaniels #C3PO #r2d2 #Starwars #RogueOne #riseoftheskywalker #instadaily #comics #comiccon #like #movie (at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqHiF2MrE3c/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

C-3P0 is often frantically calculating the odds. Anthony Daniels has played the perpetually worried C-3PO since 1977's Star Wars: A New Hope. Part Two of my #fanexpovancouver2023 @fanexpovan report is here! And I got some great pics of a few of the top names as they talk about their work, a recap and more! #conventionreport #pacificnorthwest #stephenammell #michaelrooker #anthonydaniels
At Fan Expo Vancouver 2023, the many choices of what one can choose to focus on is wide and varied. When you stick around in the main staging area where all the Q&As happen, something entirely random can delight! I spent the second and third day mostly in this area since the rest of the gymnasium space was often packed. Between the panels, I often returned to Artists Alley and also Celebrity Row…

The Lord of the Rings (1978)
Tumblr media
The years have not been kind to Ralph Bakshi’s take on The Lord of the Rings. Even if we hadn’t received Peter Jackson's big-budget adaptation years later, this film would still have been ambitious, but unimpressive.
Early in the Second Age of Middle-earth, the dark lord Sauron forged the One Ring, with which he would dominate all other races. A desperate, final alliance between Elves and Men defeated him, but as long as the ring remains lost, its master is not truly gone. Decades later, a hobbit named Frodo (voiced by Christopher Guard) inherits the ring, sparking a quest to destroy it before Sauron’s renewed forces conquer all of Middle-earth. Frodo, his faithful friends Pippin (Dominic Guard), Merry (Simon Chandler) and Sam (Michael Scholes), the wizard Gandalf (William Squire), elf Legolas (Anthony Daniels), dwarf Gimli (David Buck), and two men - Boromir (Michael Graham Cox) and the enigmatic Strider (John Hurt) - form a small group that hopes to sneak past Sauron’s lines and throw the One Ring into the fires that forged it, destroying it once and for all.
Even if no other adaptation of The Lord of the Rings had been made, this admittedly influential 1978 film would struggle to validate anyone watching it because of the conclusion. The film ends in a big battle, the characters wipe the sweat off their brow and say “Alright, now how about that evil ring?”, the narrator informs us that "Here ends the first part of the history of the War of the Ring" but no "part 2" was ever made.
Moving past that, the movie’s just not good. The plot moves at breakneck speed because there's too much ground to cover, even for 133 minutes. Characters are quickly introduced then dropped. Many get only a few lines and aren't developed at all. Several important actions/events are done off-screen or only alluded to. You’re not even sure who is important enough to get attached to, making every death and perilous situation feel weightless and empty.
The animation style is interesting, but it feels like an experiment, a trial to see what could be done with rotoscoping to ensure future project successes. Director Ralph Bakshi calls for several scenes in which large groups of Sauron's forces battle our heroes. Hand drawing the hundreds of warriors required would have been impossible. The solution chosen was to shoot live actors in costumes and then draw/paint over them to transform them into armies of orcs. If the whole film had been done this way, it would've been a stylish choice. Instead, we have nicely animated characters suddenly go up against enemies that look like errors. It doesn’t help that the battles are as well-choreographed as a bad school play, but the rotoscoping technique isn’t even used well. A sequence with a demon-like creature is laughable. It's clear the stunt person was hoisted up on cables and swung back-and-forth with the hope that their costume's rubber wings flopping around would look like flight. It doesn't.
1978's The Lord of the Rings simultaneously moves so quickly you can hardly keep up, and is so boring it feels like time is standing still. It’s an older picture. It didn’t have other epic fantasies to draw inspiration from. They had to take shortcuts to make make the then-unproven story happen. Its ambition should be applauded, but anyone who thinks they can whip up a Thanksgiving dinner with nothing but carrots and a 2L of milk is setting themselves up to fail on top of disappointing the incoming guests.
Do not let the awesome-looking cover to this adaptation of Lord of the Rings fool you. Even hardcore fans of the J.R.R. Tolkien's novels will struggle through it. It’s not all bad but any highlights are dwarfed by flaws. The animation is subpar and inconsistent, the story is confusing and not particularly compelling, the performances are lousy. It's a curiosity at best. Call me unfair, but with the 2000’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, there’s no reason to give this earlier adaptation the time of day. (On VHS, June 12, 2016)
