Another Maserati coming in for an upgrade in tech. This time we went with the new Kenwood Excelon 10" floating headunit. This amazing headunit has wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay. You can also wirelessly mirror your phone to the screen. It was inevitable to add an Ibeam reverse camera to aid in reverse parking also. We bypassed the OEM Bose system and went with the Kenwood Excelon 5-channel amplifier and a 10" Helix subwoofer in the trunk. I hate every modern infotainment system I’ve ever used, and it’s honestly turned me off of a lot of newer cars.

Call me old fashioned, but I believe that my car stereo’s job starts and ends at playing music (and maybe taking a phone call). Carmakers don’t seem to agree with that sentiment and now for the last decade we’ve been saddled with these half baked “infotainment” systems that supposedly do everything your phone can do, only worse. Every one of these systems I’ve used from AcuraLink, to Audi MMI, to Ford Sync, to Chrysler uConnect has been a mess of clunky menus, incessant warnings, unusable voice commands, and awkward controls. The worst are the cars like my mom’s 2004 MDX which burry most controls in layers of menus. That’s if they’re working as well. I’ve had many instances where my radio screen just refuses to come on at all unless I turn off the car, open the door, and restart the car. That’s right. My car radio has the same troubleshooting process of an old WiFi Router.

And in most cases you’re pretty much stuck with it. Carmakers don’t offer any path to upgrade any of these systems and your aftermarket options are pretty limited thanks to the lack of any standard for dashboards. Then you’ve got those pseudo infotainment systems that ditch the screen in favor of a normal looking radio. Great right? Except that radio also controls the HVAC system for some reason so you can’t replace it without getting some crappy aftermarket button panel to retain your controls.

3rd party app integration is also a joke. Many companies pride themselves on their development platform where appmakers can create special versions of their apps that they can then abandon and never update. Great! So now my music options are a 6 year old Pandora app and iHeart Radio. I’m sure this will stand the test of time. Then there’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The idea of having a simple screen that provides a car friendly interface to your phone navigation and music is a great concept. I have an aftermarket CarPlay headunit and it has been a wonderful experience... which is saying something because CarPlay is fucking terrible and slow but it’s so far ahead of anything carmakers have come up with that it feels like an accomplishment. And just now in 2017 carmakers are still dragging their feet on implementing any 3rd party compatibility because they want you to stay locked in to their crappy system. And even when they do integrate it they always have their own crappy infotainment running in the background that you need to go to to access any car related features.

I find the current used car market, particularly of anything “premium” or “sporty” to be flooded with these awful excuses for radios that nobody can maintain, repair, or replace. The choice now is either buy an old car with no modern anything, deal with the pains and annoyances of an outdated infotainment system, or spring for a new model with half assed CarPlay support.

So now, as much as I feel like an idiot for saying this... I’m not buying any cars and it’s because I don’t like the stock radio.
