Polish scientist watches Orb: Episode 8
Jolenta talks about her "master". Badeni is clearly not falling for it. Meanwhile, he can probably convince her the work he's doing is for the abbey, just long enough to get her involved in his project.
They seem to be getting along well. For now. You know, except for the part where he's just waiting to throw her under the bus if anything goes wrong.
Oooh, that's a fun model, with the central fire! The Sun, the Earth and everything orbiting around something we can't see. Totally wrong in some ways, but surprisingly correct in others. Since the Solar System moves around the center of the galaxy and the galaxy itself is also moving...
Reading about surprisingly correct guesses made by people who couldn't possibly have known certain facts is just really interesting to me. Like how we didn't actually discover Antarctica until the 19th century or something, but people have theorized that there must be a continent down there for nearly as long as they've known there is a "down there". Fascinating stuff.
Ah, here's Aristarchus again! Interesting how all these other models of the universe are widely considered ridiculous, but still known to the well-educated, but hardly anyone has heard of this guy. Is the show implying that the church knows for sure that he was right and has been hiding this truth since the begining of its existance? Is there a centuries old worldwide conspiracy, like the one modern flat-earthers believe in, except the truth They are hiding is the thing flat-earthers refuse to believe in? Because that's both frightening and hilarious at the same time.
I like how Badeni uses his status as a holy man (plus, possibly a bit of "you're just a girl, nobody's going to believe you") to get away with talking about those theories quite openly to someone he can't be sure he can trust yet. You can tell Jolenta's thinking "I could get in trouble for listening to him… but he's a monk from the abbey… so the things he says can't be too heretical… right?"
But she still panics after they leave.
Oooh, interesting. Could the Count be our new ally? He seems willing to challenge the status quo.
Wait? Does he not know the guys aren't letting Jolenta into the meetings? Was it actually her job to attend them all along and nobody fucking told her?! I'd be so mad if I was in her place.
Ha! Of course he knew it was her who wrote that paper. He wouldn't be doing what he's doing if he wasn't interested in figuring things out.
Yesss! Finally she told Badeni and Oczy the truth! Also, congrats on getting moved to the observatory.
Ha. Badeni hasn't figured out everything on his own either. Even though a smart guy like him really should have. Wasn't the room they talked in earlier on the Count's property? And she said she worked at an observatory. How many observatories could there be in one town in a time and place where astronomical research is actively discouraged?
Badeni is afraid of the Count, huh? Either he thinks the Count is against this kind of research and will turn him in or he knows just how smart the old man is and worries he might have to share the credit. To a guy like Badeni, both options are equally frightening :P
Oczy, as usual, doesn't know what's going on. Nobody tells him anything, and until recently he was happier that way.
Btw, I'm not some kind of expert on the history of architecture or anything, but some of the interiors at the Count's place look surprisingly modern? Like, not actually modern, but more modern than the rest of the setting?
Okay. The Count is fine with questioning the status quo and even the teachings of the Church to some degree, but isn't quite ready to consider that he might have been wrong. I guess that is the difficult part. To really devote yourself to the truth you must be ready to question even yourself.
In Mathematics realizing that you've been wrong all along is pretty rare. Like sometimes a conjecture you wanted to prove turns out to be false, but once something is actually proved, it generally stays proved. But I have dabbled in theoretical physics and, yeah, sometimes new theories rise and fall before you even get around to properly studying them. It's a bit overwhelming even if you manage to keep an open mind.
Ooh, Count Piast backstory! "Don't bother coming home." And yet, he is a count. So I guess he did end up inheriting the title.
Ooor did he actually inherit not from his father, but from the professor, who is apparently also his relative? He certainly seems to think he inherited his mission. Another great character introduction!
(Also, I've just read a paper that solves a certain problem using a very simple approach that my team did not consider. My boss is worried it might make our current project irrelevant, but I think I know how we can actually use those results to improve ours. Let's hope he's not too attatched to that one idea. So, yeah, the stakes aren't nearly as high for me, but this is kinda relatable right now.)

Good lord I'm imagining job applications and resumes in the Metroid universe... Because again, with my whole thing about different species being selected un/consciously for certain jobs and roles, that'll definitely be relevant. Like of course you have to bring up what species you are, even if it's not mandated in an application, everyone knows that if you choose not to disclose it, it's because you're not the species a certain job is looking for anyway. Being a certain species IS part of your resume, and those fill-in features they use for particular skills applies here; So if you select one species, all of the traits associated with you are automatically listed.
For another example; Species with good peripheral vision, who can stay awake for longer periods of time... Anyone with an acute awareness of their environment; These would be hired as guards, be it in prisons or as generic security. Night vision is often a must. These species don't really need to be adaptable the way Earthians are because they're usually operating in an artificial, standardized environment, i.e. their workplace.
Plus, the architecture; Accommodating a wide variety of species' body types and needs can be difficult. With how species can vary in size wildly, you usually play it safe by having big, open spaces, with big, open doors and hallways and the like; Decreases the chance of some poor species being unable to fit through, getting caught in the doorframe, etc. Revolving doors are probably out of the question. Not to mention lots of canals to accommodate water-breathing species who visit.
This is especially the case for Daiban, which is the capital of the Federation; It needs to represent the Federation, which is supposed to represent all of the species involved. It reflects badly if Daiban's architecture isn't accommodating, especially for worlds that are 50/50 about joining the Federation, and whose ambassadors are visiting its capital for the first time to discuss things. Visitors to Daiban might feel eclipsed by the architecture, because it's so spacious and the buildings themselves larger to contain all that additional interior space; But for some species, Daiban is just the right size, and Federation representatives sigh in relief over that.
And what becomes the norm for the Federation, eventually starts bleeding in to other worlds, some of which are far from the capital because immigration will always be a thing, it's why the Federation even exists to begin with. But of course, to have more space, you need bigger walls and the like, which means more building materials; That can get more expensive, so the desire to accommodate different sizes might strain against companies and governments who want to be cost-effective, it's a balance of priorities. So some might try to get around this by emphasizing outdoor meetings, or prioritizing which buildings need to be 'accommodating', with immigration offices being the most obvious example.
Are there architects who specialized specifically in 'standardized' architecture designed for these purposes? Do different foods have different labels and signs of approval by certain organizations, such as a stamp asserting X product is vegan, kosher, halal, etc.? Specifically; X product is safe for a certain species. And again a lot of it can be expensive so it's cheaper sometimes to just stick with your own world where everything, specifically the infrastructure and logistics, is already tailored to you.
But the species with the most recurring traits, the 'bell curve' as we call it? They're the most populous, they're the ones who get the special treatment because they're seen as more viable, more profitable. The bell curve species are the ones best suited to thriving in different worlds. Jack of all trades, master of none, but better than master of one; It depends on what an employer might be looking for. So we have Earthians and other species amongst the 'bell curve', and its existence could have a scientific explanation, or just be sheer coincidence.

Modern College AU!
I had fun thinking about it :)
Imagining Pereshati and them are in their 2nd year while Saoirse and Dariah are in their 4th year
Perry doubles with business management and psychology (to reference one of the doodles seungu made haha)
I'm going to dare say she initially began as a psych student cuz she was undecided and psychology seemed to be a safe choice but she does end up taking to it. Pursues business when her father's condition worsens and she redefines her future goals.
She doesn't do well in one of her business classes and almost gives up the major but Therdeo helps her through it. She does get intimidated by Therdeo's ease in helping with her coursework and that maybe it's because he was exposed to his family's business quite often.
She retakes the class and does well.
Therdeo is an interior design student or architecture student.
Was initially undecided/ majoring in a study his family expected of him (maybe mechanical or civil engineering) but Pereshati saw his sketchbook once and complimented his art skills. He opens up to her about his old hobby. It's not that he isn't capable in his engineering course but he's mostly doing it out of family obligatipn. She encourages him to to try to do what he wants and see if he would like to pursue that in the future
Saoirse is also in business management and Perry's senior. Maybe doubles or minors in Art History. I imagine she pursues a master's degree in business and maybe museum studies
Adeus is a journalism student with a minor in political science. Works part time as an assistant teacher to kids (he has a license i guess).
He shares a class with Therdeo (maybe sociology or literature)
For Dodolea, I was going to give her literature or something similar to anthropology.. then i thought: biomedical engineering. ;)
Shared an engineering intro class with Therdeo where he helped her with something and she's had a massive crush on him since. Always takes the seat next to him. Had his schedule mezmerized.
When Therdeo switches his major and thus leaves the engineering department, she's very upset and blames Pereshati for separating them. Makes the kind of drama that has you go, 'this isn't highschool.'
Schiff was Pereshati's ex in highschool. He got into a different college but isn't doing so hot even in his first year. A sports science major. His careless nature almost prevented Pereshati from getting into her dream school. She breaks up with him over how inconsiderate he treats her and her decisions for college.
He would visit/stalk the college to get to Perry and ask her to take him back. ((Maybe he thinks could take over her father's business if he doesnt do well in college))
Dariah Castor is a polisci student getting into law school💁‍♀️ meets Adeus through some classes.
Maybe her husband is also a polisci student
Reina is/was a senior in HS.
Of the three of Pereshati's childhood friends, one of them is also a business major, another pursuing occupational therapy. And lastly, Electronic Design and Multimedia (maybe). But theyre not all in the same college and meet up often when they have a break
Gunther and Raymon are engineering students. Still hang out with Therdeo after he changed his major.
Rebecca is an education student. She volunteers at the same place Adeus works at and that's how they meet. She helps with a lot of campus planning and events. A first year trying to get the best of her college years and support her family.
Is celphi born yet im not sure. 2-3 years old maybe?
Maybe Phineas is the professor there for pre-med / biomedical engineering
(That means all the cousins are his students lmao plus dodolea 👀)

ULTRAMagic Interlude Chapter 7

Master Post - Patreon
“I hate being right…”
“What’s the matter, Blood?” Valentina asked as they made their way through a lobby that branched off into multiple hallways.
“I think Sister and Desislav had a spat. I sensed it… but they seem to be better now.” This was followed by a frustrated sigh.
“Well don’t worry, sweetie. I doubt those two would get angry at each other. It was probably just some pent up frustrations from Desislav’s past…”
“What makes you say that?”
Valentina chuckled and tapped her temple. “I could sense it all those years ago.”
The Magician’s Labyrinth was incredibly beautiful, despite the unease it created. It was clear that Deimos had taken great care in designing the many halls, chambers, libraries, and observatories that lay throughout the structure. Every aspect of the interior design looked as if it were hand crafted. Classical architecture seemed to be favored with an emphasis on columns, archways, balconies, carvings, statues, and paintings. Some areas of the labyrinth differentiated in style, leaning into gothic and romanesque architecture, but retained the overall feel that had been established by Deimos’ tastes. All of it reminded Valentina of Heaven and made her wonder if the architect angels had taken some design cues from Deimos and his work.
The group entered a gigantic chamber that looked like it had been cut from the stone and crystal around them. Auda then noticed something and went over to a spring surrounded by several trees. “Hmm… I think grandma was here.”
“What makes you say that?” Brenna questioned.
“This… give me a second… flower. I remember the scent. Grandma had similar smelling flowers growing from her arms. I can’t remember if this is the exact flower though.”
Valentina took the flower to inspect it. “How pretty…” The scent was hard to describe, but it invoked the idea of one who was at relative peace. “This has to be recent. It’s still fresh and I can sense someone else, the influence of another.”
Blood-Wraith tried to look at it, but had to avert his eyes as a flash of light overwhelmed him. “Argh, red?! What was that?”
“Careful when using your third… er, seventh eye, sweetie.”
“Red, huh?” Brenna thought for a second, then had an epiphany. “Red… that sounds like it could be her grace. Although I’m not sure if I’m at liberty to elaborate further…”
“Oh, is it a secret?” Blood-Wraith was intrigued, but also a little concerned as he rubbed his eyes.
“No, not really. It’s one of those things where you know about it, but you don’t really discuss it. You could say it’s an open secret… It is important for the mission though… You know what? Screw it. Blood, the red you saw might be the essence of the scarlet flame.”
Now Blood-Wraith was confused. “Scarlet Flame? What’s that?”
“Her Grace's side of the family kept it under wraps, but this is what my dad told me: Duchess Rose has an entity connected to her… or maybe it’s inside of her. It’s hard to tell. Either way. It’s called the Scarlet Flame. Apparently it’s not a primordial, but was around during their time. The flame gives Rose all of these cool sword techniques and abilities, but makes her a little chaotic at times. It’s very possible that that essence has rubbed off on Thora. It makes me think that if we find one, we will find the other.”
Auda took the flower back and studied it before returning it to the water. She seemed worried. “Her Grace wouldn’t hurt grandma, would she?”
“Oh no, of course not. Rose was always a dignified, courteous, and kind woman. Plus she had a massive green thumb. It’s why the backyard of the Raynot mansion is a mini forest.”
“Alright then…” Auda stepped out into the open. Her horns began humming and glowing.
“What are you doing?” Blood-Wraith wondered. He had never seen this strange ability before and it was making him very curious.
“Dowsing, I think it’s called…” She focused, then turned to face west. “This way!”
The search resumed itself. Auda’s ability had been taught to her by Sigmund as a way to locate her family. The method was not perfect, however. She often ran into dead ends or other parts of the labyrinth. Fortunately Valentina was able to guide Auda in the right direction. Despite Brenna’s apprehension back in the Iron City, Auda was proving quite valuable as they kept finding traces of Thora.
Valentina was noticing a lot of things the others were not picking up on. Occasionally they would encounter odd contraptions that could not be immediately explained. To the dark angel’s eye, they looked like instruments of sorts. Some even resembled machines intended to record data. It was very odd indeed and made her wonder just what they were all for. Of course she dared not interfere with them, lest she mess something up. She had an annoying habit of her curiosity getting the best of her in the past. On one hand, she met Blood-Wraith on a trip to gain knowledge. On the other hand, she accidentally created a sentient black hole now residing in the Deep Unlight during the war.
The four stopped to take a break in a temple-like chamber made of white and black marble. It was quite beautiful and calming, providing an ideal spot to rest. “How are you hanging in there, Val?” Blood-Wraith was concerned about her mood.
“Oh? Fine, fine. I was actually contemplating exploring this place before you showed up. It’s certainly helping me get my mind off my troubles.”
“And you’re sure you’re doing better now?”
She nodded. “Yes, yes I am. Oh, Blood? Who made this armor of yours? The craftsmanship is exquisite.”
“Darkness, my brother…cousin, did. We were training before the battle with the Lich. He came up with this. It allows me to use the powers of my other forms without turning into them.” He paused as a thought he could not ignore occurred to him. “Val? Would you know if someone passed on?”
“Well I suppose I would… ah, oh… This is about Leif, isn’t it?” Blood-Wraith nodded slowly. Valentina put her hand on his shoulder. “I don’t know the exact details, but I did sense a great presence enter the Ennead and descend into the Ogdoad before I left for the Magician’s Labyrinth.”
Blood-Wraith smiled, hinting at a slight catharsis. “Thank you, Val. That helps a lot.” He then got up and stretched his limbs. “Val, can you… would you stay in the Iron City for a bit when we get back?”
“Sure, that would be fine with me. Plus I still need to tutor you… in Alchemy…” The realization hit her dead on. “Oh my goodness! Blood, I am so sorry!” Time got away from me and I just… I just…”
Blood-Wraith quieted her with a raised hand. “It’s alright. We’re here now, aren’t we?”
“Er, yes, yes we are.” She sighed. “On the bright side, you must meet my daughter when you get the chance.”
The two began walking back to Auda and Brenna. “Oh, did you get married?” Blood-Wraith inquired.
“No, not yet. She just popped up out of nowhere. One minute I’m reading an ancient tome and the next a helpless baby girl is crying for her mother.”
“Aw. What’s her name?”
“Gabriella. And she grew up into quite the fine angel, if I do say so myself.”
Brenna noticed that Valentina and Blood-Wraith had rejoined them. “Perfect timing, you two. We need your help…”
“Yeah, this door only opens so far,” Auda clarified.
Before them was a grand, magnificent, stone door. It was truly majestic and engraved with strange runes that Valentina immediately recognized. “My my, ancient angel language. Not too many beside my kind know this.”
“Can you read it, Val?” Blood-Wraith asked.
“Absolutely. One of my other friends is an Ophanim who was adamant about teaching me this stuff…” Valentina got to work deciphering the door. What she found was a puzzle in the form of a riddle. It asked for the difference between a Seraphim, Ophanim, and a Cherubim in a very witty way. She laughed to herself as she finished the puzzle, causing the door to open. “Well Deimos certainly has a delightful sense of humor.”
Blood-Wraith could sense the comedy and chuckled. “Can you have your friend teach me that language?”
“I don’t see why not. He’s probably already divined you asking that as a matter of fact.”
Moving deeper into the labyrinth, everybody began to notice that things were getting stranger. The architecture became non-euclidian and unknown entities could be spotted here and there. The most common were humanoids made of metal and what looked like flame. Typically they avoided the group and fled when approached. It was bizarre as the group could sense great power coming from them. Valentina was able to identify these mysterious interlopers as the Ar’ton. They were higher dimensional beings that were incredibly elusive in the Cosmos proper.
“Hey, hey!” Brenna called out as she ran after one. “Ah shucks… Hey, you! Got a minute?” No luck. “Dang it. They’re quite skittish, aren’t they?”
“It’s interesting that we’re seeing such a concentration of them,” Valentina pointed out. “I wonder what that implies for the labyrinth…”
“I’m telling you all-there’s another Unlight out there!” Auda asserted confidently.
Blood-Wraith looked at the floor and tapped his foot a couple of times. “You know, Auda? I feel you might be onto something. I’m getting all sorts of weird vibes from this place.”
Continuing onwards, a new puzzle presented itself to them. In an incredibly tall room was a strange series of disconnected staircases. Each had a panel of levers at the center of them. Brenna figured the stairs were the way forward and Valentina deduced they had to be moved in a certain way. Of course Auda charged forward and began moving the first one around. As she moved, so did the other staircases. Valentina noticed a new set of stairs was available, asked Auda to stop for a second, and climbed the stairs to get to the control panel. Realizing that it was a process to be worked through, she instructed the others to follow in her steps.
“Shoot, Almost there…” Valentina ran some of her hair through her fingers as she looked around at the staircases that still needed to be moved into position.
“Val, where should I rotate?” Blood-Wraith called out.
“Um…hmm…Oh! I got it! Blood, rotate clockwise 90 degrees!”
Blood-Wraith pulled the lever, causing a chain reaction that lined up everyone with the exit. “Whoa, nice…”
“Way to go, Blood” Brenna congratulated as she caught up with him. The group then made their way up the stairs and out the exit.
A thought occurred to Blood-Wraith. “Hey, Val? Could you have flown past that puzzle?”
“Probably, but where would the fun be in doing that? It’s not like we’re in a rush or anything. Likewise, I could ask the same of you.”
“Well it did cross my mind, but I wanted to show respect to uncle Deimos.”
Auda giggled. “Plus it was fun.”
Blood-Wraith gave her a high five. “That too.”
Brenna then stopped the group, as she was sensing something. “Shh… follow me…” She quietly led them behind a corner. “Val, who’s that?” She whispered.
Valentina peaked her head out to see a robed and hooded figure with giant wings coming from his back. “Is that… Is that an angel?”
“Eh? You tell me?”
“My apologies, but I have no idea who that is…”
Brenna was confused. “Well that’s not good. I thought you guys were supposed to recognize each other.”
After a couple seconds of apprehension, Blood-Wraith made up his mind. “Alright then, I’ll just go and say hi to him…”
“Blood, wait! No-you’re the VIP…” Brenna whispered-yelled.
Blood-Wraith was a little nervous, but spoke clearly. “Hey there, I’m Blood-Wraith. Who are you?”
The angel turned to him, his robes creating an imposing presence. Taking off his hood revealed he had a metal body and six, shining eyes. They were much like Blood-Wraith’s, each glowing with a color of the rainbow. These eyes would merge into a standard pair, like the entity had shifted his focus from something special he was studying. Red lines also appeared to be all over his body and pulsed with light like a heartbeat. Looking down at the boy, he smiled like he ran into a good friend.
“Blood-Wraith Raynot, I was wondering when I’d finally meet you.”
“You already know me?”
“Sort of. Allow me to introduce myself: I am ULTRAMagic Ultimatum, but you can just call me Ultimatum for now. I see you’ve also achieved ULTRAMagic. Would you mind if I discussed that with you?”
“Oh, um, sure. Go ahead.”
“Excellent. Although I should first explain myself a bit.” Ultimatum looked towards the others. “Please, come sit. I’d like to meet you too.”

Eligibility Criteria of Manipal University
The eligibility criteria for an MBA at Manipal University can differ depending on the specific campus or college that's running the course. But, I can totally give you a rough idea of what their usual requirements look like. Remember though, the ultimate source of the most accurate and recent information will be the official website or you could also directly get in touch with the university.
A Bachelor's Degree: You will need a Bachelor's degree from any renowned university, and this can be in any field of study. To ensure your application stands a good chance, you should have earned this degree with a minimum cumulative percentage, which usually falls between 50% and 60%. (However, this is subject to vary based on your university's specific criteria.). Entrance Exam Score: Most likely, you'll need to ace one of the MBA entrance tests, which could be any national or university standards such as CAT (Common Admission Test), MAT (Management Aptitude Test), XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test), CMAT (Common Management Admission Test), or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).
Work Experience (Not always though): A few MBA programs might prefer you to possess work experience of a span of one to three years, particularly for Executive MBA programs. So, if you've worked before, that’s a plus!
English Proficiency: If you're flying from overseas or your prior education wasn’t primarily in English, then you will need to demonstrate your proficiency in English. TOEFL or IELTS scores are widely accepted methods to prove this.
Interview or Group Discussion: If you've been shortlisted, yay! That's great news! You can typically expect an invitation to a one-on-one interview or a group discussion. This is all part of the selection process.
Admission Procedure Of Manipal University
You're interested in a special program and campus you want to apply for. Awesome! I can definitely give you a broad idea of how the usual admission process works for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Manipal University. However, bear in mind that admission procedures can be updated or changed over time. So, it's always a good move to double-check the official website or get in touch with the university directly for the most current info.
Application Stage: For those enthusiastic about starting an undergraduate or postgraduate journey at Manipal University, step one is to fill out an application form. Check out the university's official website where this form is generally available. You will need to fill in your personal details, academic history, and any other necessary info.
Entrance Exam (When Required): Depending on the course you're eyeing, you might need to sit an entrance exam. To illustrate, let's say you're gunning for an engineering course - in that case, you'd be completing the Manipal Entrance Test (MET). Aspiring medical students will need to take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) or a medical-specific test. If you're interested in a management course like an MBA, then buck up for a national-level test like CAT, MAT, or GMAT. The entrance tests vary depending on the course in question, so always double-check what applies to you.
Admission Test/Interview - Hey there! Just a heads up, for some programs, you might have to go through an admission test or an interview. This is just part of the process to see how well you fit for the course.
Merit List - Once all the tests and interviews are done, the university's going to prepare a big list - a 'Merit List' as they call it. That list is going to rank everyone based on how well they did in the exams and interviews. That list determines who gets a seat in which program, so it is pretty important!
Counseling - If you do really well and make it onto that merit list, then the next step is counseling. You'll be invited to a session where you can pick your favorite course and campus, depending on their availability and where you stand on the merit list. So, fingers crossed you do well and can pick out your ideal course and place!

Place of Birth: Rochester, NY
Neighborhood: Avalon
Length of Residency: Since March 2020
Occupation: Architect and Owner of Danziger Arch
Face Claim: Deborah Ann Woll
BIOGRAPHY
TRIGGERS: Divorce.
Rachel Danziger was born and raised in Rochester, NY to a civil engineer father, David,  and a middle school teacher mother, Elizabeth.  Rachel was the oldest of two girls, born in quick succession, who couldn’t have been more different if they tried.  They were close, though, both in age and relationship.  The family was always firmly middle class, never more privileged than minding their nickels and dimes, but bolstered by their Jewish faith in a largely Jewish community, they never felt wanting.
Always a hard worker, and blessed with a calculating mind, Rachel sailed through school and entered Parsons with enough IB credit to be considered a sophomore in college and almost enough scholarships to pay her way.  Thanks to her father’s efforts to teach her about his job, and her own strengths in math, she always knew she wanted to study architecture.  She loved the rules, and the challenge of subverting those for artistic purposes while still needing something that both looked beautiful and was functional. It was, she felt, a microcosm of her own personality on display.  It clicked immediately as a passion for her and she never looked back.
Nothing shook her confidence, or increased her appreciation of beautiful things like her college friend, Rory.  While they were pressed together quite often for school projects, the future architects and the future interior designers, she almost immediately had a more personal interest in him.  The acquaintance grew into friendship, which turned romantic, and grew into a marriage.  Both beautiful and functional, at least to Rachel. Her beloved younger sister, at that point, was off the rails and living wildly in Europe, and it was a source of constant drama and worry.  Rachel loved the stability Rory provided to the point she wasn’t even shaken when they made a baby well ahead of schedule, just before she graduated with her master’s degree.  Finishing an internship and working under her bachelor’s degree while battling through a challenging pregnancy wasn’t easy, but she made it, and her reward was the love of her life, their son, Adam.
Her comfort zone was severely tested when their little family relocated to Los Angeles at Rory’s behest. It was easier to get established in California, rather than New York City.  However, that didn’t translate to success and the struggle was very real for Rachel.  Work stress, parenting without any balance, and family needs as her parents’ health failed on the other side of the country, plus her sister’s antics crushing them— it all added up to make Rachel not a good partner or person.  Practical to a fault, she refused to be the weak link or to be vulnerable, and this distance would ultimately result in the unraveling of her marriage.  Her first, real bout of doubting herself resulted in a very rocky transitioning to co-parenting through a divorce. Rory’s descent into addiction, combined with her own unwillingness to trust and inability to let someone else do something, cost her dearly.  Her focus shifted to Adam, rather than dealing with her own heavy baggage, and it was a long time before she managed anything more than the basics of existence.
Finally, years later, two men coaxed her out of her emotional hibernation.  Well, three if one were to count the father she leaned on cross-country.  Her mother had passed on at that point, so they needed one another.  Adam was growing into a great guy, and was easily her favorite person to be around.  The third source of support was an unexpected, older man.  Their meet-cute was nauseating and she was reluctant to get caught up again.  Adam’s little heart was still bruised from the parenting back and forth of a difficult and complicated divorce, and Rory’s personal struggles and shortcomings.  But slowly, over the course of a year, he worked his way into her stubborn heart.  They had a great relationship and he actually built one with Adam, too.  Their relationship came screeching to a halt when life pulled him away, a job offer he couldn’t refuse in Toronto combining in epically terrible timing with Rory’s rehab and recovery.  While Rachel had her reservations and hesitations about Rory, she couldn’t bear to be the person who separated Adam from a father who was finally trying so hard to be what he deserved.  She turned down a proposal, and in an uncharacteristic leap of faith, moved Adam to Catalina to be closer to Rory as soon as she could arrange it.
Things in Catalina haven’t been, and still aren’t easy, by any means.  She’s kept the full depth of reasons she’s there to herself, and it’s hard to avoid being bitter about when she’s become so isolated.  Work is flourishing, though, so she can throw herself into it.  Adam is doing well and, while it’s not perfect, his relationship with Rory is improving.  Still, she recognizes she needs something more to be truly happy and settled, she just doesn’t know what that might yet be.

Portal to the World: Cincinnati Celebrates Its New Railroad Terminal
Author: Scott Gampfer
Tumblr media
On March 31, 1933, a turn of a ceremonial gold key unlocked the doors of Cincinnati’s brand new Union Terminal. The newspaper declared that a portal to the world had swung open. H. A. Worcester, President of the Cincinnati Union Terminal Company, then presented the key to Mayor Russell Wilson. The mayor accepted the key and declared to the assembled crowd and dignitaries that the terminal was “a temple of civic hospitality, welcoming the traveler through gorgeous gates to the city we love and bidding with architectural beauty the departing to return.” During his remarks, the mayor made reference to the fact that Ohio River flooding had caused the terminal to start train service earlier than planned. He said “The disaster of flood befell us, and like a faithful friend the terminal came to our rescue, and for almost two weeks has functioned in prophecy of what it will accomplish in future decades.”
Union Terminal ceremonial key and plaque presented to Mayor Russell Wilson at the grand opening of the new facility. From the collection of Cincinnati Museum Center.
Construction of the new terminal and its related facilities had begun in August of 1929 and was completed in March 1933. The complete terminal facility included 22 separate buildings, 94 miles of track, almost six million cubic yards of fill, 224,500 cubic yards of concrete, over 45,000 tons of steel, and 8,250,000 bricks. The total cost for the project was $41,000,000.
The terminal was built to serve seven railroads; Baltimore & Ohio, New York Central Lines, Louisville & Nashville, Pennsylvania, Chesapeake & Ohio, Norfolk & Western, and Southern Railway. It replaced in a single consolidated facility, the five previous old passenger depots in the Cincinnati downtown basin area, plus the many scattered freight facilities.
The construction of the terminal and related facilities was a massive undertaking, and Cincinnatians were justifiably proud. An enormous crowd gathered on the terminal plaza for the ceremonies. The excitement of the crowd was palpable, many attendees from the area making Friday essentially an informal “Cincinnati Day.”
While waiting for the speakers and the official ceremonies, those in attendance were entertained by a musical performance from the 45-piece Armco Band under the leadership of Frank Simon. The speakers stand was crowded with dignitaries including, Mayor Russell Wilson, City Manager C. A. Dykstra, Ohio Governor George White, C.U.T. Company President H.A. Worcester, Col. Henry Waite, Chief Engineer for C.U.T. Company, George Dent Crabbs, Vice President of C.U.T. Company, Alfred Fellheimer, chief architect for the project, and former Cincinnati Mayor Murray Seasongood, who held office at the start of the project.
Other notables in attendance were the mayors and officials of neighboring cities and towns, the entire engineering staff of the Cincinnati Union Terminal Company, prominent Cincinnati area businessmen, as well as Irwin Krohn, President of the Park Board and his fellow park commissioners.
Following remarks by various dignitaries, the handover of the key to Mayor Wilson, and a flag presentation ceremony by the American Legion, the doors to the new terminal were thrown open at 3 p.m. for public inspection.
The Times-Star observed that “A note of newness prevailed at the Terminal exercise. Everything from beginning to end was spick and span. All of the accommodations in and about the terminal were fresh. The Cincinnati Street Railway Company operated new special busses on the terminal service. Taxicabs were all ‘dressed up’ and the spirit of newness grew upon the observer.”
The Chamber of Commerce produced an 88-page booklet containing photographic views of the interior and exterior of the new Union Terminal which was available at the ceremonies and which “attracted widespread attention.”
In the forward to its booklet, the Chamber called the new facility a great temple of transportation and wrote that “The Cincinnati Union Terminal has come into being, a perfectly coordinated instrument for the swift dispatch and acceleration of passenger, freight, express and postal traffic. The long, tortuous course of its progress from inception to completion constitutes one of the finest epics in American industrial achievement.” The forward also noted that although dedicated to public use and the promotion of the general welfare, the terminal also was a monument to the idealism, artistry, and courage of the people who made it a reality.
That evening, after the crowds had gone, a celebration banquet was held at the Netherland Plaza, Mayor Wilson serving as the master of ceremonies. One of the speakers, former Governor of West Virginia, John J. Cornwell, congratulated the city on its great achievement, but added a note of cold reality when he said “I should say it [the terminal] came after the need, to some degree, had passed, for the decline of more than 50 percent in railroad passenger business has left expensive passenger stations in this country standing as monuments to civic spirit and unfulfilled railroad expectations.” He said he was hopeful that the magnificent new terminal would stimulate travel to and from the city and that the unified operation of the railroads would result in a savings justifying the expenditures.

Meet The Artists – Sarah McMenemy
Tumblr media
London based Illustrator Sarah McMenemy has been with The Artworks for over 30 years! Joining the agency as one of our first ‘Startworks’ artists during her time at Brighton School of Art, Sarah is best known for her delicate use of ink and collage.
Sarah’s favourite project since joining The Artworks has been the series of mural illustration’s she created for Shadwell underground Station in London. Working with Transport for London, Sarah created a series of gorgeous Illustrations that reflect the surrounding area and explore the rich history of Shadwell.
We had a chance to chat to Sarah and find out more about her life as an artist…
Where do you live?  Where is your studio located?
I’ve always lived in London, and the architecture, the colours, the people and visual stimulation of the city has had a strong influence on my work. As a teenager I used to draw the beautiful Georgian terraced houses of Hampstead and Highgate on commission. I am often asked to create images of the city, some of my favourite and most successful projects have been based here. I have a broad client base from the London Underground network to City law firms, and Publishers and have depicted many London pubs, restaurants and city institutions. This type of work has lead to a wide travel portfolio and I enjoy capturing the atmosphere of different destinations worldwide.
My studio is in the mean streets of De Beauvoir Town in Hackney. I work in a Victorian artisan studio. There are eight of us including architects, graphic designers and illustrators. Plus, a rather chunky studio cat.
Can you describe your creative process?
I’ve got a thing about paper – its physicality, the sometimes-unpredictable way paint behaves on it. I like creating abstract, graphic elements and rich textures through collage, paint and ink; combining fine line details with loose brush strokes and abstract shapes. The enjoyment of the physical process of making images is central to my work. It has an intrinsic optimistic and uplifting character giving it wide appeal across many areas of the industry.
What does a typical working day look like?
I usually go for a walk or a run before I get in to the studio, and I like to make sure everyone knows about it before getting on with my jobs. At lunchtime we sit down together to eat our overpriced but convenient sandwiches from the local deli.
I work through to the end of the day, sometimes into the evening if the deadline is tight. If I’m on my own, I may play some dance music. Come to think of it I may do that even when I’m not on my own. If there is a music god I think his name is probably Nile Rogers.
Do you listen to music or the radio whilst you work? If so, what’s on your playlist?
I like it when it rains as it makes a loud noise on the roof and I feel like we’re camping in a tent (aka UK camping). We generally listen to NTS, the local Dalston radio station. I also like 6Music, a bit of Radio 4, and sometimes Pop-master – yes, Radio 2.
How long have you been with the Artworks for?  What drew you to Artworks?
I have been with the artworks since before I left college, only a few years ago now. Ok 33 years. I started in their Startworks group when they visited Brighton School of Art to give a talk, and we met when they looked around our studio in the lunch break. Actually, I missed their talk as I was shopping at Miss Selfridge but it doesn’t seem to have harmed my career much.
What books or programmes did you love as a child? Have they influenced your work in any way?
Books were a big influence on me as a child and there is certainly a flavour of them that comes through in my work now. Edward Ardizzone’s illustrations for Stig of the Dump and Jean and Gareth Adamson’s Topsy and Tim, Richard Scarry, Beatrix Potter, Shirley Hughes and Miroslav Sasek are a few that come to mind.
Loved all the Oliver Postgate children’s programmes Bagpuss, The Clangers, and Noggin the Nog. Mr Benn was endlessly fascinating. Trumpton, Camberwick Green and, of course, The Magic Roundabout.
If you weren’t an artist, what would you be instead?
If I wasn’t an illustrator I would be a Club DJ playing exclusively Funk and Disco.
What was the most important lesson your learned at Art School, if you went!
Art school taught me to interpret a brief in a way that I can enjoy and therefore do my best work. And that the fine art students are top of the pecking order, in their eyes (love them really)!
What inspires you the most to create?
I find inspiration in the big skies of the Norfolk coast, the gently rolling hills of Hertfordshire, as well as noticing beautiful colour and shape combinations in everyday life. The energy of cities, particularly Paris, New York, Tokyo, Venice, London. And of course a bit of studio cake helps.
Name three artists that you admire
I can’t name three. Here are eight.  Some favourite artists are John Piper, Raoul Dufy, Abram Games, David Gentleman, Toulouse L’Autrec, Humphrey Ocean, Saul Steinberg, Saul Bass.
What kind of commissions do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy collaborating with clients and other creative professionals.  I enjoy seeing my work at large scale in public places. Writing and illustrating a variety of children’s and adult’s books. It is exciting to have my work animated. I also like working in branding, visualising architecture and interiors, book covers and editorial. I enjoy the thrill of working live, at conferences or events. Short deadlines, long deadlines, they’re all good.
What would your dream commission be?
Dream Commission would be a set of stamps depicting beautiful skies around the or the grand international hotels like Claridges, The Savoy, The Ritz.
Do you have any pets? If so, what and what are they called?
We have a studio cat who walks along the roof light above our desks. It’s always nice to hear the soft thud of his paws on the polycarbonate. Purposeful, like he knows where he’s going, but sometimes he just stops and has an altercation with another cat, or soaks up some sunlight.
What 5 things could you not live without?
I cannot live without houmous, my mini, trees, tea and 6music.
What is your very favourite meal?
Fish Pie and peas.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Singing in a choir, dancing, walking, running, exhibitions.
What is your current dream travel destination?
Quite fancy Barbados at the moment, but Copenhagen, Seville and Northumberland are on my list.

How you can Determine the Valuation on Making a New House
This can function as aid through providing some tips and methods for estimating the cost of building a brand new home. Just as one expert residential estimator there are numerous points to consider before you begin estimating. Construction estimating can be tough and yes it does demand a higher level of accuracy and detail. It also requires good math skills plus a little geometry knowledge. It needs the opportunity to read and understand construction drawings and details and how they're applied. Basic construction knowledge helps and understanding the area building codes. You might want to sign up for a construction estimating course on the local college or technical school. An alternative would be to purchase an estimating manual from the local bookstore or head to estimating.org that provides online courses and has a bookstore. One of the rules i learned along the way will be the saying, "measure twice cut once." Whenever I really do a takeoff or perhaps estimate I usually follow this rule so that you can help minimize mistakes. What you will really should put an estimate together? You need a notepad, a calculator, an architectural scale, plus an engineering scale. These are the basic tools you'll want to put a quotation together. Architectural & Structural Drawings Now you you will need to open the plans and start to check them. The best action to take is look them over and obtain an understanding of the fundamental building concept. You ought to get informed about the data that is contained on every sheet. Most construction projects possess a set of architectural drawings along with a pair of structural drawings. Let me explain the real difference forwards and backwards. It is vital that the plans will be to scale and also have all the details and wall sections had to properly estimate from. What is typically part of a complete list of architectural plans? The drawings at the very least need to support the following sheets: a title/cover sheet, a web site plan, a floor plan, a basis plan, four elevations, a roof covering plan, an electrical plan, a sheet which has a typical wall section, a sheet using the window and door schedules, along with a sheet using the necessary building and architectural details. The structural drawings are drawn by a structural engineer, not the architect, unless the architectural firm comes with an in-house engineer. Any interior shear wall or bearing wall is detailed on these drawings. The engineer calculates every one of the uplift and bearing loads of the rooftop trusses on all the exterior and interior. After doing the calculations they decide which walls are shear or bearing or both and what is necessary to properly support those uplift and or bearing loads. The engineer will put a structural note on any wall that's bearing or shear. The note will indicate the sheet number and detail number illustrating how that wall should be built. A large quanity bearing wall as an example may thickened concrete footer with two items of steel along with the wall above it will need to be framed beyond southern yellow pine versus spruce with special metal hardware. These needs to be highlighted on the plan in order that they are not overlooked. Sometimes the hardware called out by the engineer is often a special order which enable it to take many weeks to get. When you hold back until the framing package needs to ordered and you will find a two or three shear walls with special order hardware it could possibly delay the building. You have to make enough copies of the architectural and structural plans for multiple subcontractors and suppliers bidding the position. To save you cash, ask your architect and engineer to transform here is your chance files to some Document. This may save time also and earn it convenient since email them to as much subcontractors and vendors as you desire. Specifications A list of product specifications have to be provided so that all the subcontractor and vendors are bidding apples to apples. This can be a list detailing every one of the products and finishes you desire with your brand new home. This doesn't make sense to transmit the plans over to bid without a group of specifications. Without the, the bids you will get won't be apples to apples. Then you will have to have every one of them rebid the job. It wastes considerable time and produces plenty of unnecessary work with the subcontractors. Remember them do not require practice bidding and some of these may well not submit an offer with no list of specifications included. Therefore, sets from paint colors towards the floor finishes have to be selected. They should be on the plan or with a separate document. Doing the Takeoffs It is too technical to put in a written guide the way to quantify the concrete, masonry, lumber, and shingles simply to name a few. For instance let's assume you should quantify the masonry block on one story block home. You should state what sort of wall is assembled which include the opportunity to visualize and understand construction methods. In the event the exterior walls have multiple heights, a consistent block (8x8x16) must be added as well as a lintel block should be deducted in every location the place that the plate heights change. If a number of the walls are on a 45 degree angle you'll need to be capable of know whether to estimate an angle block or butterfly block. The entranceway and window openings need to have a certain quantity of standard blocks deducted including a half block another course on each side of each opening. You might have an excessive amount of one size block and only inadequate or some units not included whatsoever. These inaccuracies will screw up your budget and price you money and time. This ability and knowledge can't are derived from the sunday paper but through face to face experience joined with many years of estimating experience. If you opt to quantify the types of materials yourself It is advisable to make reference to Walker's Building Estimator's Reference Book, frankrwalker.com that has instructions on how to estimate the amount of concrete, masonry, lumber, drywall, etc. It really is considered the bible for construction estimators and it's also among required books included in the study guide for most state contractor's exam. Just keep in your mind these reference books would not have guidelines as well as real world experience as explained above.
Tumblr media
You can use the help of your subcontractors bidding the task or your suppliers. You could possibly pay more for his or her services or products you can also hire us. Either way you are purchasing someone to review the plans and quantify prefer to build the project. When you have your lumber yard quantify the information remember he or she is attempting to win the work so he or she give you a takeoff which is too tight. This doesn't assist you to if you should keep reordering more lumber. The well-known solution to that is to possess your framer build the lumber list in your case. Well it doesn't work either as they will over order so he doesn't uses up material and possess to produce additional trips to finish. They would like to finish as soon as possible so that it will get inspected and they also could get paid. The bottom line is neither will work to your advantage. I recommend you do not try to quantify the type of material yourself. I've outlined valid main reasons why. It is extremely technical and requirements someone with many years of estimating experience joined with face to face field experience. Soliciting Bids This portion of preparing a quote is possible by most anyone. It is advisable to speak to your local builder's association to have subcontractor referrals or use Angie's List, angieslist.com which prescreens contractors at the same time You might have heard the term RFQ - Request for Quote. You would like to solicit a minimum of contractors. Most people will say three bids, so why do I propose five bids? Let's say you contact five contractors and five contractors bid the work. You have to think you will are the high bid then one could be the low bid. So those needs to be set sideways because odds are the lower bid is probably missing something and also the high bid is priced way too high. The remaining three bids should be reviewed thoroughly to successfully compare apples to apples. If you contact all of the subcontractors that you might want to bid any project make sure you give them a proposal deadline day. This way there is no need to chase them. Allow them to have a fair timeframe to examine the plans and specifications, typically one or two weeks. Analyzing the Bids First organize your entire bids by trade, for example putting all your electrical bids together. A three ring binder with dividers and tabbed with every category is a good strategy to organize all the bids. Once you get the bids you should read them carefully and review them from the plans and specifications. They ought to contain the project information and also the date. They should be detailed and itemized. Your cabinet bid shouldn't say "cabinets". Instead it ought to list and quantify each of the cabinets by finish, style, size, and site, example 15 lnft of 42" oak raised panel kitchen cupboards, 1/ea 60" melamine master bath cabinet, 1/ea 36" melamine hall bath cabinet, etc. If it will not add the countertops it must claim that so there isn't misrepresentation. Each time a proposal must be revised, make certain it states the revision date or states "revised". That way once you compile the bids so you have to refer back to them you may be exploring the latest one. The proposals must also indicate workmanship and warranty. All this is essential, specifically contractor won't perform and mediation or worse litigation is required. The best way to Negotiate the very best Price Once you determine a few competitive bids hard part is negotiating with all the contractors. You need to believe that all of the quotes will likely be inflated together with the understanding you'll negotiate less. Therefore, you ought to get them down as little as you are able to to the real number. I ask my subcontractors and vendors if the bid is negotiable. Remember it never hurts to inquire about, the worse they are able to say is no. Of course, if they say yes, however question them what's the maximum they're able to cut their bid. They normally respond with, "how much must i suffice to obtain the job" and again I put it back on them by saying, "the maximum it is possible to cut your price". Never name an amount first! You must curently have a low cost of what within your budget to pay on every item. That knows whether would be ready to take action for less than that. After they lower their bids and you also determine the low bidder you have to compare warranty, workmanship, and references. Costs are important, in case they are unable to finish the work the price does not mean anything. You need to need to check both project references and credit references. The end result is you desire the most effective contractor for that smallest amount of money. Preparing a quotation Once you have awarded the position to every subcontractor you will want to prepare a bid. I recommend using Microsoft Excel to organize your estimate. Oahu is the easiest and mostly traditionally used spreadsheet application, specially in construction. It helps organize your estimate. Use a separate worksheet for each and every trade inside Excel workbook. You'll be able to enter all of the material lists and bid amounts you obtain. You can track the work to make sure you are saved to budget. It is possible to email any local suppliers your material lists to enable them to enter their unit prices and they can email it back. One of several sheets has to be the estimate summary containing the total cost for every phase or trade. It ought to incorperate your preconstruction costs and direct construction costs. It must possess the estimate total at the bottom. You'll find endless possibilities that you can do with Excel as well as the degree of detail is about you. We've available for sale blank estimates which might be in Excel. These are templates that individuals use which will help you calculate a number of the material quantities and may also be employed to prepare your estimate. They contain prebuilt formulas for calculating concrete, steel, masonry, and lumber. All you need to do is enter counts and lengths where indicated along with the quantities are calculated in your case. Contact us to deliver which you sample template. Conclusion I am hoping this has provided you are going to some good information about how to arrange a bid if you're creating a home. Were available to answer inquiries you could have. We can enable you to come up with a quote for just about any sort of construction project, big or small, commercial or residential. Eliminating of undesirable elements, like dust, living or no living infective agents, and impurities that carry microbes, from any surface, objects like liquids or solids, or the environment, on the whole, is very much necessary to ensure better living conditions. The process of cleaning is carried out in different methods, and several organizations and livelihoods are dedicated to this kind of maintenance activity.
Basically, the process can be categorized as exterior cleaning and interior cleaning. While in the process of exterior cleaning, refers to cleaning any outside part which may be a building, structure, monument, etc. this process includes the restoration procedure, plus the removal of litter on the outside of the specified building or any civil structure. The process of exterior cleaning plays an important role in environmental care, architectural maintenance, and a great deal of public safety.
Cleaning is done in two main ways one domestic and other commercials.  Commercial cleaning is carried out by companies that use a wide variety of cleaning approaches, including various chemicals and equally advanced equipment to speed up and facilitate the cleaning.
While the interior cleaning and its scope may include all internal cleaning of the area and routine cleaning of the floor, internal wall, ceilings, lighting, and domestic furniture. In some cases, it also involves the cleaning of amenities and washing facilities too. Cleaning of kitchen, cleaning of machinery and other devices where periodic cleaning is carried out as and when required. The commercial cleaning sector is quite competitive; in order to stay in the race and survive today’s commercial cleaning companies offer comprehensive training to their employees old and new alike.

Located in the heart of Beverly Hills, the 1941 building housing the new space was designed by influential Southern Californian architects Douglas Hannold and George Vernon Russell, and is a rare example of pre-war modern architecture in the city. In addition to paint tasks, indoor decorators do not get to touch the ceiling and wall style, they just leave it as is and stick what has actually currently been constructed. They just add what they can to exhibit the personality they wish to depict for the area itself and even the user. But, with an interior designer, they reach regulate just how their wall surfaces and ceilings will certainly resemble, according to the principle they have brainstormed upon.
It is a far more challenging subject than other individuals might view, as it would need a great deal of coordination with designers as well as engineers. So in some way you need to a minimum of recognize a bit of exactly how these specialists work points out.
