Dreaming Architecture: From Chicago to The World

Is the American dream any different to the British dream or the German? I had a dream in Chicago in 1988; on my arrival, before starting as an architectural intern at Skidmore Owings & Merrill at 33 W Monroe. It was about looking for the building of Helmut Jahn; the Postmodernist Thompson Center. It was not to be found; but another building did appear that seemed to honour water. It was black ,lit with sunlight and showed dark greys in the shadow and greens from the reflection of the water. It was not until much later in my career/education that I stumbled on a similar construction, in a lecture at the Architectural Association. Peter Cook and Christine Hawley were presenting their Osaka Folly, built in 1990 in Japan. Of course I did go to the Thompson Center, where they issued my Social Security Card. I was taken that the vast space that escaped the laws of fire protection, due to it being a governmental building. It too had taken the lives of 5 construction workers. A cable lowering a bucket carrying six construction workers at the building site broke, hurling five of them 80 feet to their deaths and seriously injuring the sixth.

I had a dream that I could understand architecture and become an architect.

Haunting the dead

I was on a tour with a small group of people, guided by this woman who resembled tremendously with Vanessa Ives (Penny Dreadful fictional character). It was an old house with lights so weak that their yellow wasn't just warm, it was decaying. The rooms where reasonably big but mostly high with wooden ceilings, floors, doors, furniture and windowsills. This wood was a brown so dark that could easily be mistaken for black. Everything about this house was creepy. The cracking noise of the old wood under our feet, the heavy air, the bitter smell of time. At some point only the guide, myself and someone else were in a basement like room. I come to understand this used to be the house of a priest who died over 400 years ago and in this room we were now exploring was his tomb. Right at the centre. Nothing remarkable about it, no inscription, nothing but a big block of old wood. The guide then instructs me to haunt him. Clearly confused I ask her - What do you mean haunt him? He is dead! Aren't the dead the ones supposed to haunt us? She turns to me with the most blank expression in her eyes and says - That is where everybody is wrong. The dead are dead, there is nothing else they can do. Us, the living, are the ones with the power to do something. We haunt them in their graves. Not really knowing what to do or say, I push myself up to lay on top of his tomb. So I start telling him all about the emancipation of women, the “weaker sex” as he must have certainly thought back in his time. That we study, we vote, we dress like we want, we date whoever we want, we are free to enjoy as much sex we want with how many people we want, we are professionals, we earn our own money and pay our own bills and belongings. We drink and smoke and dance. 

I find that I agree with my dream. What awesome way to haunt a priest.

A neurotic old man

I still felt like myself, but when I looked at the mirror or at my hands I could see an old man. Around his 70′s I would say. This man I was, was lonely and kept most things to himself. He lived in a small apartment in a small quiet neighbourhood and spent most of his time looking through a small window in the living room. The walls inside the house where painted in old white, some yellowish cracks and spots were visible, and the wooden doors and windows where pale turquoise green. Through the small living room window he watched the street below, the other buildings staring at him, and the people. Old people just like him and a younger girl, slightly younger than 20. With nothing to do for long boring hours, he liked to play with his sex toys. He had a few but I clearly remember the Lelo Wave (as I own one myself) as his choice for the day. He closed the window and began using it. He was rough on himself. He was doing it angrily and a bit violently too. It went on for a long time, with gapping and stretching movements, orgasming frequently. Suddenly someone on the street calls him and, to his annoyment, his play is interrupted. It was the young girl who wanted to come upstairs to his house. He tried to send her away, but little girls can be very persistent. With the fastest speed a 70 year old man can have, he took the toy out of his body. The last thing I saw was this huge opening with unstoppable rivers of blood and a neurotic old man.

House in the desert

In the middle of absolutely nothing more than sand, there was a two story rectangular house. A perfect rectangle, pale salmon color. Each room of that house was huge in all three measures of length, width and height. The upper floor was completely surrounded by a balcony, like an outside corridor accessible from all divisions. The walls of this balcony remind of a castle. In the distance I can glimpse the radars blinking green lights from tall narrow antennas. The horizon moves with the heat waves. Its day and then its night. I’m sitting at the enormous rustic dinning table, and we are two sharing a meal. Butlers are standing with silver plates awaiting any sign. The room is silent, there is no exchange of words. As I turn my head the translucent curtain dances to the wind. The feeling of emptiness is overwhelming.
