About this Project

It may not seem like it, but the shower is easily one of the most wasteful appliances in a home and expends great amounts of water and energy.

According to Home Water Works, the average flow rate of a shower is 2.1 Gallons (7.94L) per minute; this with an average shower time of 8.2 minutes results in 17.2 gallons (65.1L) used per shower or 51.6 gallons (195.3L) used in an average American household (3 people) per day. This makes it the third largest water user in a home.

The numbers are even more surprising if you look at the energy use. According to Skidmore College, the average shower uses 440 BTUs (0.13 kWh) to heat one gallon (3.78L) of water. This means that about 2.2 kWh are used in a single typical 8.2-minute shower and 6.6 kWh used per household per day! According to the US Department of Energy, this makes up 17% of total home electricity usage.

With the US EPA's estimate of 0.000703 metric tons (1.55 pounds; 0.7 kg) of CO2 per kWh, this results in 3.4 pounds (1.54kg) of CO2 per shower and 10.2 pounds per household.

However, the recommended shower time is only 5 minutes according to Green Lifestyle Changes - this cuts water use by 6.7 gallons (25.4L), power use by 871Wh (That's enough to power 174 CFL bulbs for an hour!), and CO2 emission by 1.35 pounds (0.6 kg) per shower. This is where the Shower Regulator for the Intel Earth Day Challenge comes in which would limit the shower time to 5 minutes or to whatever time the user chooses.

In one 365 day year, this would save 2,455.5 gallons (9,295.1L) of water (enough for a person to drink for about 13 years) and 317.9kWh or 492.7 pounds (223.5kg) of CO2 per person, resulting in 7,366.5 gallons (27,885.2L) of water, 953.7kWh of power, and 1,478.2 pounds (670.5kg) of CO2 saved per household.

How does it Work?

The solenoid valve is closed when the device is powered off so no water can flow if the regulator is not running.

The valve opens when the device is powered on; the user can turn on the water now.

The regulator allows the water to warm-up for 20 seconds (is adjustable) indicated by 1 beep.

After the warm-up, the regulator begins the shower timer for 5 minutes (is adjustable) indicated by 2 beeps.

The regulator will give 1 beep warnings 1 and 2 minutes before the shower is over.

Once the shower time is completed, the device will automatically close the valve, stopping the flow of water. The user can turn off the water and the regulator now. This is indicated by a continuous beep.

TGIF everyone! :D 

One more day and we’ve made it to the weekend! What are you all up to today and tomorrow? The weather here has really started to get nicer, so I’m looking forward to spending some time outside in the woods hiking and just being with my tree-friends hehe :) 

Yesterday a friend gave me an Arduino Genuino so I also want to play around with that a bit and learn about some circuit building/coding! If you haven’t heard of it, the Arduino is a tiny computer/board that allows you to learn how to program and explore electrical circuits through a bunch of online tutorials and tools. There are other companies like Raspberry Pi and CHIP who also make similar products too. The original Arduinos are pretty cheap, but the Genuino model (also known as the Arduino 101 I believe in some places) has more components added on to it and comes with a starter kit for 15 different little projects you can do with it! So I’m excited to begin building things :B

To code for the Arduino Uno R3 Ch340G USB IC SMD Atmega328P IC, you will need to follow these steps:

Half-true call-out posts for makers of consumer electronics, smartphones and desktop computers are so boring. Instead we should do more about these for microelectronics and the like. With that in mind, here’s mine:

Stop buying Arduino, they’re problematic.

Note: I think it’s perfectly okay to buy a cheap knock-off of the Arduino Uno, Nano or Mega; I have dozens of them myself. I mean from the actual company itself. Yes, buying there funds their open source development and project, but honestly, I think they have enough money, considering what they’re spending it on, with their MKR range, the whole Arduino Pro/Potenta stuff and so on. The Arduino Uno and Nano are really complete products. Maybe they (or someone) will make a version with a USB-C plug, but that’s about all the development this needs. Ιf you want more power, the Raspberry Pi Pico or the whole STM32 range are right there, and the Raspberry Pi Pico is incredibly cheap.

Plus, it’s not like the Arduino guys are that great people to begin with. Consider the whole Arduino/Genuino split, or the way the project was an end-run around Wiring (at least according to the Wiring guy).

Yes, these guys do provide the (long finished) framework and the IDE. But on the flip side, they provide this IDE. It’s crap, it’s always been crap, and it has long passed the point where its hacked-together charm was endearing. Maybe 2.0 will be better, I know it’s supposed to be out soon. But I’ve already switched to PlatformIO long ago and I’m not looking back.

Now I’m not saying don’t support open source hardware and related projects. I’ve donated to KiCad, for example. And if you genuinely need the high-end boards that Arduino provides, well, knock yourself out.

But for the basic foundational beginner projects, where you just need to blink a LED with minimal setup time, my recommendation is to buy a clone (or many clones, they’re cheaper in bulk), or look at the more modern alternatives.

KARTUŞSUZ CATGENIE ÇALIŞTIRMAK

Not 1: Arkadaşlar 2 kişiden yıkama bittiğinde hata verdiğine dair geri bildirim geldi. Bu neye bağlı ben de bilmiyorum ancak sizdeki catgenie de böyle bir hata verebilir. Bu riski göz önünde bulundurunuz. Çözüm olarak bir arkadaş 10 sn. de bir arduino’ya reset atiyordu galiba ama kalıcı bir çözüm değil.

Not 2: Arduino’yu benim hazırlamam durumunda ne kadar olacağına dair sorular geldi ancak hiç sipariş gelmedi :). Buradan yazmış olayım 250 TL. Sizin için arduino sipariş edeceğim, kodu derleyeceğim, test edeceğim ve kargolayacağım siz de bunun karşılığında bana ve eşime yemek ısmarlamış olacaksınız :). Ancak şunu belirteyim, benim amacım buradan kar elde etmek değil zaten bu yuzden açıkça anlatmaya çalıştım, kendiniz yap��n diye.

Bütün catgenie kullanıcılarının da bildiği gibi, catgenie kartuş ile çalışır ve her kartuş 120 yıkama içindir ve sonrasında tekrar kartuşu yenilemeniz gerekmektedir. Kartuşun şuan hepsiburada fiyati 360TL, lokumpet fiyati ise 260TL gözükmektedir(05.09.2018). 

Ancak bir arkadaş  oturmuş çalışmış çabalamış ve catgenie'yi kartuştan bağımsız çalıştırmanın yolunu bulmuş ve bunu github'da yayınlamış. Ayrıca CartridgeGeniues gibi de bir çözüm bulunmakta ancak bu sanırım artık üretilmiyor.

Kaynak ingilizce ve DIY(Kendin Yap) proje olduğu için Türkçeleştirmek bunu uygulamanıza yardımcı olacaktır diye düşünüyorum. Bu yüzden bunun nasıl yapıldığını size anlatmaya çalışacağım;

Arduino’yu hazırlamak

Öncelikle kod’u Arduino’ya derlememiz gerekiyor. Bunun için gerekli adımları yazıyorum;

1.       Öncelikle Arduino’yu derlemek için gerekli olan programı indiriyoruz. https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Donate 

Just Download’a tıklamanız yeterli indirme başlayacaktır. 

2.       Yükleme bittikten sonra kurulumu yapın. Hiçbir karmaşıklığı yok. Next-Next dediğimiz kurulum. Guide’in İngilizcesi burada; https://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Windows#toc1

3.       Kurulum bittikten sonra, paket içeriğinde yer alan USB kablosuyla birlikte Arduinonuzu PC’ye bağlayın.

4.       Kurduğunuz uygulamayı çalıştırın.

5.       Karşınıza şöyle bir ekran çıkmalı. Buna benzer bir uygulama görüyorsanız doğru yoldasınız. :)

6.       Tools > Board > Arduino/Genuino Uno’nun seçili olduğundan emin olun. 

7.       Yine Tools > Port > COM5’i seçin. Burada size özel başka seçenekler çıkabilir. Seçilebilir olanı seçmeniz yeterli olmalı. 

8.       Aşağıdaki adresten kodu kopyalayıp, IDE’ye yapıştırın. Lütfen baştan aşağıya, eksiksiz bir şekilde seçmeyi unutmayın. https://raw.githubusercontent.com/davidhampgonsalves/CR14-emulator-for-CatGenie-120/master/src/main.cpp

9.       Artık kodu derleyebiliriz. Sketch > Upload’a tıklayın. Dosyayı kaydetmeniz için bir ekran çıkacak, ismini verin. ÖNEMLİ! Dosyanın adını mutlaka değiştirin, geldiği isimle bırakmayın. Örn. Catgenie diyin ve kaydedin.

Kaydetme diyaloğu. 

10.   Kodu derledik şimdi sıra kablolarda. Prototip kablolarınızdan 4 tanesini alın ve Arduino’nun üzerinedeki aşağıdaki gibi takın.

11.   Artık Board hazır.

1.       Bu aşamada elinizdeki uzun tornavida ile vidaları çıkarmak oldukça basit. Bunun için yine İngilizce hazırlanmış bir video var. Bunu çevirmeye gerek yok, video takip ederek gerekli kabloyu çıkarmak oldukça kolay ve anlaşılabilir.

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, released on October 26, 2007, was the biggest change to Mac OS X since Apple first released OS X 10.0 in March 2001. For the first time, a version of OS X was certified as Unix, and the new unified appearance makes Leopard friendlier and less confusing for users.

Leopard itself was also a unified operating system. Where Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger had come in separate versions for PowerPC and Intel Macs, the Leopard installer could run on both platforms, and the version of Mac OS X installed could boot either type of hardware. New features included Time Machine automated backup, Stacks, and Cover Flow.

Downloadable Updates

Standalone Updates let you update to a newer version of Mac OS X from your hard drive instead of using Software Update, which requires an Internet connection. Download the one(s) you need and install them after mounting the disk image and launching the Installer program.

There are two types of Standalone Updates: Individual (or Delta) and Combo.

Individual Updates update one version of Mac OS X to the next version. For example, the Mac OS X 10.5.4 Update updates Mac OS X 10.5.3 to version 10.5.4. Individual Updates are also known as Delta Updates.
