Well boys, time for a new Theory after episode 115 dropped

This one is gonna focus on Chip and a bit of the original version of the Prophecy

Warning of spoilers and unhinged thought process, read at your own risk

For this post imma be focusing on a line from the Prophecy. Which would be:

"The seal remains locked by a Key of Divinity"

So I ask you:

How does Chip know Celestial?

Why was he Welcomed Home in that place?

What is the secret of himself that not even he knows?

He is the key. It's why in the one shot, Chip being grabbed was specifically mentioned. Why Niklaus felt the need to make a deal with Chip that would land him directly in the Hole in the Sea.

Now, fair warning, I do believe that Niklous would be fully aware of such a moment and set the board for this eventually. The why is the only thing I am uncertain about, I have my thoughts but that's a theory for another time.

He was Welcomed Home because that was where he would always end up, it was the place he would always find his way to. You could even say, it was the place he was Destined to be.

Now, here is where it all gets a bit more nuanced...

I believe there to always have been someone who was a Key of Divinity. When the last dies, a new one is born. (Basically an Avatar situation)

However the reason it is only just now happening is because it's only now that the stars have aligned to allow whatever has been locked away to be unleashed.

The key has always been born on a different plane, whatever was locked away was not strong enough in it's prison to reach out for the key, and it hadn't been arms reach.

Until Chip.

Chip has been the first to meet all the qualifications. And Niklous nudged Captain Rose to head that way for their last Journey, for Chip to get grabbed. However there was unexpected interruptions, in the form of Arlin, Drey, and Finn.

So Niklous would have to rearrange the board to get Chip once again where he needed to be.

And now he is.

And it may be too late.

I've been having so much brainrot about the theming of fate and chance in jrwi riptide so please bear with me because I feel like in our everyday vocabulary use chance and fate interchangeably. Like when someone does something and goes "eh I'll leave it up to chance" as a way of saying it is what it is or whatever happens it fated to happen as it does. BUT there's a big difference in the though process of fate and chance that keeps them from being fully synonymous.

Fate will happen no matter what, no matter how hard you try fate is something that's inevitable. Now whether being aware of fate makes it worse or better is up to interpretation. The largest part of it is the concept that no matter what this will happen no matter the odds.

Chance, like fate, is fairly unreliable. However they differ in the ability to plan and rationalize. With chance someone is able to assess the risk and reward and see a clear meaning in decision. For example I could take the chance and not study for an exam, but then I risk failure. However that failure isn't inevitable. I am not fated to fail the exam, I merely took the chance and either face the consequences of that chance and fail or do well and possibly continue the behavior.

This is the difference I see clearly displayed with Chip and Gill, especially early on in the campaign.

Gill has a clear connection to fate with his status as chosen one and the environment he was raised in. The undersea as we know it is seemingly very black and white, someone is either wholly good or bad so there's no need for chance. Chance can cause hesitance, something you don't want to see in a super soldier like the elders raised Gill to be. It was integral for the elders to raise Gill in an environment where he's taught that he can technically make a choice, but by the end of it all everything he does is for his destiny. Everything is fated to happen. The idea that no matter what he does he doesn't really have a lasting choice makes it easier for the elders to teach him how to detach and face horrible circumstances because it was meant to be and if he were to question them he'd question the good which could only make him bad in the black and white mentality of fate.

We're really seeing the effects of this in recent episodes with everything going on. He's starting to question the black and white of the world and the truth he was fed as he grew up. Despite all that's happening though I feel like Gill still feels a deep connection to fate as a way to hold on to the good in a sea of bad and the idea that he was meant to meet Chip and Jay, he was meant to bring light to all the island and cities they've helped. However in all that good of fate that logic also means that all the bad was fated to happen. He was fated to be trapped, he was fated to nearly die, he was fated to not be strong enough to save everyone, and I think we're really going to start seeing the effects of that even more on Gill.

Chip on the other hand can't afford to believe in fate. Not after everything that's happened to him. If he subscribed to the concepts of fate I don't think he'd be where he is now because he'd have to crack under all that pressure. For as much as Chip gets shit on and called dumb, he's quick on his feet and knows how to calculate a risk which is why he's so deeply intertwined with chance. Chip needs his choices to matter because if he didn't what the hell was everything for? Chip's connection to chance is further solidified by the usage of coins as a sort of motif for him in the form of Arlin's coin.

Coin's tend to connect with chance because they're the fairest way to decide something randomly with a 50/50 split, so while there are two choices that have an effect there's a way to disconnect oneself from the consequences. This split is just random enough that there's comfort if something goes wrong, but leaves enough choice to make it feel like there was a decision made and that choices were made and matter.

Though the coin is traditionally 50/50, like with all chance there's a grey area. What if the coin lands perfectly on its side? What if the coin rolls into a hard to reach place? There's always uncertainty with chance which is something Chip has learned to thrive in throughout his entire life. There's comfort in the uncertainty because Chip knows he has the choice and that those choices dictate whether he lives or dies and I think there's a part of that which invigorates him. He's able to look around at his situation and take a chance and have control, something he didn't have during the events of the hole in the sea. He took a chance on every single person on his crew, both in his co-captains and crewmates. He took a risk with the navy girl who needed to get away. He took a risk picking up a fish man yapping about destiny from the middle of the ocean.

Where Gill sees their meeting as a story he was happy to be written into, Chip sees their meeting as a story he's happy to keep writing.

Ultimately I find the places of fate and chance super interesting and I wish I could better articulate my thoughts about it because I have so many thoughts about them.

I would also like to add in a side note about Jay's place in all this because she truly does feel like the middle man in all this due to what we've learned about the fire people with the special blood that seem to connect to Jay (fate) and her work as a spy and all the important decisions she's made throughout the campaign (chance).

Once again Jay Ferin is truly the most perfect being.

on a dime thinking about characterstics different pcs tend to share across the players.

charlie: everyone says it and it is so real, religious trauma and imagery cause i mean literally just look at peter and exandroth, gillion's whole deal being the chosen one, william's incredible distress discovering the absence of god. horror but especially body horror cause AGAIN peter and exandroth, gillion's often scary n fishy descriptions, the way charlie describes how ghoulish william looks with william literally decomposing. comically exaggerated personalities with gillion the most hero of heroes he's so hero just look at his titles, peter to be mistaken for a literal doormat, exandroth the fanatical violent all around super evil angelic force, william wisp the freak from deadwood who has ghost powers and was so dedicated to solving mysteries he died that's his thing. might i say they are all quite obsessive, gillion obsesssed with being the chosen, peter obsessed with rocks and lizard, exandroth obsessed with retribution, william obsessed with mysteries, and this can create a strong disconnect with the world around them. of the pcs i would say they are usually the most outcast of outcasts and the most freak of freaks. also autism.

bizly: very straightforward characters with no subversion, what you see is what you get. NORMAL, AVERAGE, UNDERWHELMING, these are terms you can use to describe chip rand AND connor <- also they all have the same brown hair. this makes their badass moments stand out and be triumphant, where would we be without chip's badass sword, rand's badass finale, connor's horrifying but also sort of badass moment with the book, and also thanatos is a compilation of every badass moment bizly could probably ever want. there's always some sort of family issues see chip no family, rand strained relationship with family, connor i think had something going on but i cant remember, thanatos and the holy family. definitely most likely to get into conflict with other pcs might i say, gillion and chip, rolan and rand, rumi and thanatos, that's literally one of every other players' character what can i say.

grizzly: these characters are all struggling to live up to incredibly idealised persona and for the most part end up failing, rumi's persona literally breaking down until they shed it completely to be true to themselves, dakota always trying to be a hero which has worked out so far but we're just waiting for something bad to happen, kian who pretended to make it as a rockstar after most definitely failing, aster is by proxy sort of failing to live up to the perfect persona that is her father. shapeshifters? i mean rumi is a changeling, aster can alter her form, dakota has a feral mode, and kian got bugged so you know (joke). lot of these characters are incredibly gender lets be honest here.

condi: feel an intense pull towards conforming, jay struggling to push against her family, vyncent from another world trying to adjust and appear normal, rolan getting a respected profession, everything with ryan. there is a struggle of identity that is incredibly external, jay as a pirate vs the literal navy, vyncent's repeated experience of sharing a body, rolan being a fucking bug, ryan had a confrontation that was the most direct thing you could bear witness to. the actual perfect balance of two very smart characters and two of the most incredibly stupid characters i have ever seen. honestly very on point about their observations of others and themselves but can find difficulty to express that to other.

and i totally forgot about the prequel pcs but ms g and finn are also autistic, harlem shade definitely has that classic super cool persona also gender, jason king god bless this normal dude dragged into whatever the fuck the other two have going on, arlin is the source of the family issues. i literally am too tired to write anymore so i apologise if i fucked stuff up i cant be bothered anymore send post.

cant believe i havent seen anyone do this yet but. riptide pokemon au. heres my fucking thoughts

gillion's team is a solid mixture of electric, ice and water types. probably something built for competitive play but i aint that kinda smart so idk. BUT i do know his ace is a gyarados

gil's team was given to him by the elders over the years, and he was trained to be the best pokemon battler of the undersea

despite being told not to, gil is very close with his pokemon. he has a soft spot for all of them and can't Not be empathetic for them. theyre his babies :)

pretzel is a clobbopus. i know theyre not pink but listen. its literally a punching octopus. its also the cutest octopus pokemon LOL

pre-character arc gillion has a one track mind for competition Only. he loves his pokemon but they are also his weapons, in a way

as he spends more time in the oversea he adopts a more relaxed team. theyre still extremely strong and he still has his competitive pokemon but he stops caring about their stats and movepool and starts caring more about their personalities and bonding with them

chip didnt have any pokemon until he joined the black rose, where arlin gifts him an eevee

after the hole in the sea, it's just him and eevee against the world

his eevee refuses to evolve - especially during his time with price's gang, but even afterwards when theyre by themselves on the ocean eevee won't evolve

chip had his heart set on being a water type trainer, like arlin was, so he tries to convince eevee to evolve into a vaporeon. this is a running bit

its also a running bit that the team chip builds are all different types and use different strategies. members of the crew are pokemon btw i think gryffon is a pangoro LOL

his eevee is a little SHIT just in general. has cute privilege and knows it.

when gil is trapped in the dunjon, instead of taking his sword chip starts using his pokemon. he discovers that water types never really were his thing, after all.

its here, where chips at his lowest in a long time, demotivated and thinking of leaving his crew behind, that eevee evolves. into an umbreon - a dark type, but also a friendship evolution.

it evolves to show him that someone does care, that someone does want him around - his oldest friend, his pokemon.

chip learns to use all his pokemon to their greatest ability. i think he would have a bias for fire and dark types, but he becomes a well rounded and skilled pokemon trainer

jayjay! the ferins have a tradition where they breed their corviknights and pass the rookidees down to their kids. family pokemon :)

ava happens to get a shiny rookidee! she gets her rookidee right when she joins the navy and starts working under her father

this rookidee is...very nervous. greyhound energy. it's a shy little thing that has trouble battling and is very attached to ava and her little sister jay

ava takes the time to work through rookidee's issues and try and build it's confidence, jay acting as babysitter when ava is away at sea

at some point, after rookidee evolves into corvisquire, ava never comes home.

this ofc fucks with both jay and corvisquire. it puts corvisquire's training back by a lot and leaves jay grieving and angry

once she leaves with chip, she takes corvisquire with her. its too scared to battle and needs to be on or near her at all times, but it's a piece of her sister jay can't bring herself to leave behind.

jay ends up building a flying/steel type team, with corviknight growing and gaining its confidence as a pirate pokemon rather than a navy pokemon

its still got mega separation anxiety tho. it wears a nervous dog vest LOL

And uh, they met so Rose could announce his retirement. Heh…all the rest of the crews of course didn’t join. Cause when the four pirates - these are the strongest pirates in the entire world - and when those four fight, doesn’t matter how strong we were. We weren’t helping. So they fought, but it was never malicious, always out of respect. Always ended in a draw. It’s said that the four original Pirate Lords are the ones that made the Pirate code. Though I mean, by our day it was more suggestion than rule. And when one of them wanted to retire like that, they needed the other three’s permission. Cause eventually someone was gonna take his seat, or so we thought. ~ Drey Ferin, episode 82.

Okay guys hear me out. HEAR ME OUT.

What if after everything is done, Arlin is found, Navy is fixed, the world is saved, what if after all that the three Riptide Captians become the three strongest pirate captains and finally take over and replace the legendary four as the new genration, the Three Pirate Lords? What if from then on THEY are be the ones to keep the balance in the world? The balance between the Undersea and the Navy, as the guardians and representatives of those who dare to call themselves free, the ones who keep the pirate code alive. What if after a while, they go their different ways, create seperate pirate crews, but occasionally they also meet in some faraway place, some secret special spot only they know about. And everytime they do, it feels like coming home.

Maybe the Four Pirate Lords were a family once too. Maybe the Three New Pirate Lords will always be one as well.

It's a cool AU idea, I think ^^ I'm already imagining how cool their legendary pirate outfits would be <3

thinking thinking about names….

jay ferin is a ferin. she was raised to be a strong navy officer. she has a whole family line of strong navy officials and she was expected to carry on their legacy. especially after ava died.

gillion tidestrider is the undersea’s hero. he is the son of the prophecy and would solve all the undersea’s conflicts with the oversea. he was a tidestrider and he was trained to be great. to follow the elder’s every wish.

chip doesn’t have a last name. maybe when he was with arlin he called himself chip james . but he has no history or anyone that put pressure on him. maybe when he was with price’s gang he was “one of them” but he left them. for most of chip’s life he’s had barely anything to his name or anyone to look after him. hes never had a legacy to uphold or people to please. it’s just been him.

sorry i hi insane over names… jay’s family name severely affects her life, gillion's titles and honor affect his life, and chip has none of that weighing him down. but at the same time, having nothing to his name and no one to know him by makes him want more. a legend or legacy.

Riptide episode 90 SPOILERS//

I. Love. Chip!!!!!

Chip is terrified to become Arlin. Remember when he used to actively try and be the next Arlin? Yeah he's not doing that anymore because he's terrified!!! He doesn't want to go missing like Arlin did, he doesn't want to put his entire crew in danger, he loves his crew!

Like, the way Bizly showed so clearly how much Chip idolozed and adored Arlin from the very beginning is insane. The same outfit, taking on Ollie, the tattoos - Chip wanted to be a pirate so he could be like Arlin!

But then they met Drey, and Rufus, and Chip started seeing the active danger in being a pirate. Chip started questioning what he was actually getting himself and his friends into. Chip started questioning his memories of Arlin and the Black Rose Pirates.

And Chip realized how much it hurt looking for Arlin. How dangerous it was actually going to be going to the black sea. How much danger he'd be putting Jay and Gillion into if they did go. And Ollie, god Ollie! Chip wants to bring Ollie home and give him a chance at a normal life. His tattoos turned from waves to flames as Chip found his own magic, his own spark, his own reason for continuing on this path.

It's not so much about Chip getting closure anymore. It's about Chip giving Arlin and Drey and Finn the happy ending they were meant to have. It's about closing the book of the past so that Chip and his friends - his family - can live for the future.

your name is chip, you're ten years old, and you are very definitely totally not scared.

(you think, for a minute, what elizabeth would say if she heard you say that, but you shake it away.)

it takes you far too long to calm down when you wake up, firstly, because for the first time in years and years you don't wake up to the rocking of the boat or to arlin's snores or elizabeth's sleep whispering. you wake up to silence, and a solid, soft bed. if you'd thought about it, you'd realise you'd never BEEN in a bed this soft before, but you really AREN'T thinking about it because the ship went down where's arlin where's arlin where's arlin-

someone must hear you then, because a head pokes in through the door. a man, you think, but certainly NOT one you know. you reach into your waistband for the knife everyone pretends you don't always carry but it's not there, and you think, enemy? but they LOOK nice enough, standing patiently in the doorway while you frantically pat yourself down (you still have the coin arlin gave you if not your dagger, thank stars) and try to remember that shit about breathing drey showed you before. panic never helped anyone, you think, though you cant remember who said it to you.

it seems the man gets tired of your staring eventually, because he finally walks into the room proper. you think about biting him, but arlin never seemed that hurt when you tried to bite at him that one time so you aren't sure if it'd work. while you're busy contemplating that, he starts talking. his accent is strong, so you can't catch all of it, but you hear what's important.

found you washed up... brought you here... where are are your parents?

and. again. you are not scared. you're a black rose pirate (in training), and nothing scares you! but this man doesn't mention anything about anyone else washing up. just you. and you- you remember, in flashes, what just happened. the storm, the lightning, hanging from the mast as your rope snapped taut but held, but arlin's didn't and the- the... something attacked the ship and your rope finally snapping and falling and arlin, arlin saving you, arlin throwing you back on board and drey tying you back in and you couldn't see anyone anymore but drey SAID, he said it'd all- that it'd be over soon.

but you woke up again. and they aren't here. but you fucking are, damnit, and you made it years on your own before they found you the first time and you can wait just as long again for them to do it again. because the midnight rose NEVER sinks, and they'll be ok and they'll find you, are finn can keep teaching you your letters and drey will finally teach you the constellations you always fell asleep to early to catvha nd you'll get big enough to beat elizabeth at something for once and captain rose will call you a real pirate and you'll see arlin again. you WILL. because it's- they're all you had. HAVE. you haven't lost them.

hi my final for my psychology class was to write an analysis on a fictional character and identify a disorder and treatment options for them. i wrote about jay ferin from hit d&d podcast just roll with it. the paper got graded (i got an A, yippee) so here's the post!

Just Roll With It is a Dungeons & Dragons podcast, taking place in the world of Mana: a place largely made up of the sea and sporadic islands, where both pirates and Navy soldiers roam free. An unlikely trio of two humans and a triton—a race of undersea fish-like people who are able to live both under- and overseas—unite primarily out of convenience, working with each other to pursue their own individual goals. Chip, Jay Ferin, and Gillion Tidestrider form a pirate crew they call the Riptide Pirates, sailing the seas as they make allies and enemies alike. Their crew seeks to aid others, fighting for the freedom to sail the seas against a Navy organization known as R.A.F.T. amongst other shenanigans. They’re entangled in plot after plot, fighting for freedom, justice, or sometimes just plain old treasure. Across their adventures the trio find themselves learning more about the other two and their histories, along with how to trust each other.

The trio stumble across dozens of events—inciting a revolution on an island overtaken by R.A.F.T., making deals with a wish doctor to free a town of a curse, venturing into a Navy prison to free an old friend—all the while seeking their own answers. For Chip, he seeks to find Arlin, a man he considers his father, who he lost after the previous ship he’d been aboard sunk. For Gillion, he seeks to fulfill his destiny—as a prophesied hero to choose between land and sea, he’s searching for the right answer when it comes time for his choice. For Jay, she seeks answers about her sister, who died a year prior. The circumstances around her death are unclear—it’s thought that she died in combat, and Jay had previously been told that her sister had died in combat, but the more evidence she finds, the less clear it becomes. 

Jay Ferin is a 21-year-old human female. She hails from a prestigious Navy family, with many of her family members holding its top positions. She co-captains a crew of pirates alongside Chip and Gillion and is often regarded as the most reasonable of the three due to her tendency to not pull punches and aim for direct solutions, however she still has a tendency to be just as if not more chaotic. She’s strong, innovative, and incredibly observant, taking the role of the ship’s navigator and unofficial lookout. She refuses to back down from a challenge until it threatens her or her crew’s lives, but still knows when to try to de-escalate a situation. Conversely from that, she has a tendency to play along with the others’ antics, often playing a role in escalating their energy. Her proficiency lies with ranged weapons, first a bow and later a revolver she has modified to better suit her own needs as a result of her interest in tinkering and mechanics.  

She abandoned the path set by her family to become a Navy officer in order to seek more information about her sister’s death, and eventually betrayed her family to fully dedicate herself to her co-captains and crew. Despite this betrayal, she struggles heavily with defying what she views as authoritarian figures and breaking away from the path her family has laid out for her. When forced to confront her father and choose between her family and her crew, the only way she finds herself able to resist is when he’s knocked out of the room, giving her the necessary room to flee. It’s due to these reactions and circumstances that I believe Jay struggles with a form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

The American Psychiatric Association (2000) describes PTSD as most notably caused by exposure to a traumatizing event, such as “actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence.” Jay most likely developed PTSD after her sister’s death a year prior to the beginning of the campaign, in addition to the abuse she endured as a child. She repeatedly mentions that her sister’s death is the reason she began adventuring in the first place, seeking answers. Jay considers her sister one of her primary role models to this day, wondering whether she would believe what she’s doing now is right or if she’d be proud.

In addition to her sister’s death, Jay was raised in an extremely strict environment, with severe consequences for stepping out of line or misbehaving. She mentions how her father had once shot one of her dolls due to a belief that she was not focused enough on her training. She isn’t allowed passions or interests that don’t assist her progression in the ranks until she takes a break from her education after her sister dies, instead working with her mother at their family’s tavern. Even then, she’s constantly asked for strategic advice and manpower, being one of few people in the town who have any experience with weaponry to deal with bandits and a nearby thieves gang and isn’t really able to disconnect from her family or anything outside of what she’s always known. Adventuring with Chip and Gillion provides her the reprieve to reassess what has happened, along with giving her the chance to develop on her own for the first time. 

Jay is extremely passionate about invention, often working late into the night to create gadgets of both mechanical and magical use. It’s a passion she was not allowed to pursue as a child in favor of strategy and combat training, and one that she only begins to delve into once she is much more comfortable with her surroundings away from her family. She takes extreme care for her work, spending days or weeks perfecting a single mechanic that she’ll use throughout their journey. Her skills and passions are recognizable enough that she was invited to join a crew working to get to space when the time was right, which she accepted with excitement. Given that her time with the crew is the first time she was truly able to step away from the same things that surrounded her for most of her life, it’s easy to assume that she was unable to pursue this interest until she was in recovery. Her growing interest in it the longer she’s able to take time to heal proves that during the initial stages of PTSD she didn’t take any chance to engage in these activities, something that she’s always dreamed of pursuing further.

While it’s evident that she still struggles with PTSD, this is evidence of an important step in her own recovery. She’s given the freedom to explore a passion that she both wasn’t allowed to and didn’t have the motivation to pursue during the initial onset and is now able to take active interest in it.

Jay is also a naturally observant person, taking notice of things far before anyone else in the crew is able to. She’s on high alert at all times to the point that she’s the first person to scout ahead and find any traps they may stumble across. This hypervigilance, a reactive symptom of PTSD, gives her a quick reaction time and allows her to defuse a threat quicker than it can act, but also means that she may find threats where there aren’t any or approach a situation with unnecessary caution. Her observance has saved them on more than one occasion, but it’s also caused its fair share of problems. She struggles more when she feels she’s being watched from a source she can’t quite pinpoint, and will often force the crew to work around threats—real or not—that she perceives.

Early into the crew’s journey, Jay is shown to frequently grapple with nightmares. These often relate in some form to her family, loss of control, and the Navy. One instance in particular she dreams of being found by a Navy fleet and tries to run away in a panic. When she believes she’s woken up, she takes out a keepsake of her sister’s and reassures herself that they hadn’t found her. This keepsake falls apart in her hands, turning into blood, and feels specters of her family watching and mocking her. When she actually wakes up, she reassures herself that her family doesn’t control her and that they haven’t found her. She stays up the rest of the night, unable to sleep any longer. These types of distressing dreams and difficulties with sleeping are intrusive and reactive symptoms of PTSD.

In a modern setting, the primary focus of treatment would likely be therapy, which allows Jay to reassess what she’d been through and come to terms with it. In some ways, she has already begun a form of self-treatment by removing herself from a hostile situation and giving herself a far better support system, along with slowly embracing parts of her that have less association with her family. Her mental status has improved significantly since the beginning of the campaign as she’s less frequently getting nightmares and is willing to talk about her sister, whereas she completely shut down conversations related to her before. Jay has been willing to deviate from her primary goal of finding out what happened to her sister but still keeps it in mind. She won’t be content until she finds these answers—treatment options as a result may include reconsidering what this goal means and what, if any, resolution it may bring her. If she has further plans for this information, then discussion can go from there, but if not it may be best to try to guide her towards coming to terms with what has happened and living for herself instead of in search of her sister. 

Jay’s portrayal of PTSD is something integrated as part of her character—its symptoms show naturally through her response to triggering events and times when she’s forced to face her family. Her condition may have been severe towards the beginning of the campaign, but over time, by reconciling with the reality of her family’s treatment of her and her theories as to what happened to her sister, along with finding a group of people who thoroughly support her, Jay has been able to begin to heal.
