It is a dam across river Cauvery, a 1700 m long dam, built in the year 1934. The water from this dam irrigates 2.75 lakh acres of agricultural land in Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, and Thanjavur districts. It is located 52 Km away from Salem. There is a beautiful park and a children's play area near the dam. There are Hydro Electric and Thermal Power Stations based on this dam.

3. Mookaneri Lake

This is a large water body spreading over 58 acres in Salem, just 2 km away from the city . There is a park which attracts many tourists. 6. Kalipatti Kandaswamy Temple

It is 20 km away from the temple. The devotees come here to get Karun Sambal, an antidote made up of snake poison. On the Thaipusam day, the two special chariots Chitra Ther and Vinayaka Ther are taken as a procession around the temple.

7. Kurumbapatti Zoological Park

This zoological park has various kinds of animal and bird species. The main attractions are the white peacock and colorful cranes. It is spread across an area of 11.5 hectares. There is a playground for children which makes it a good place for a family picnic.

8. Sankagiri Fort

This is the most popular tourist spot of Salem. This historic fort is located a few miles away from Salem city on the Sankagiri Hills at an altitude of 40 ft above sea level. The weapons, pistols, jewels, and other artifacts belonging to Tipu Sultan and Theeran Chinnamalai are displayed in this fort.

9. Jama Masjid

ARUNACHALA HILL

Each of the spiritual centers of India has its own character and line of tradition. Among them all it is Tiruvannamalai - Arunachala, that represents the most direct, the most formless and the least ritualistic of paths, the path of Self-enquiry, whose gateway is silent initiation. This is expressed in the old Tamil saying: “To see Chidambaram, to be born at Tiruvarur, to die at Banaras or even to think of Arunachala is to be assured of Liberation.” “Even to think of” because in the case of the direct path physical contact is not necessary. Hence, it was no accident that the Maharshi made Tiruvannamalai and its sacred Arunachala Mountain his home.

The Maharshi called Arunachala the spiritual Heart of the world. Aruna, which means ‘red, bright like fire’, does not signify the mere fire that gives off heat. Rather, it means Jnanagni, the Fire of Wisdom, which is neither hot nor cold. Achala signifies hill. Thus, Arunachala means ‘Hill of Wisdom’.

Tiruvannamalai, situated at the foot of Arunachala, is a town of medium size, 120 miles southwest of Chennai, an ancient village with a large and splendid temple. Certain yearly festivals draw large crowds of pilgrims to Tiruvannamalai from all over South India. This is especially so during Karthigai (also known as Deepam), which usually falls in November. On this occasion a beacon light of clarified butter (ghee) is lit at nightfall on the summit of the mountain. At Sri Ramanasramam, the greatest festivals are the anniversaries of the birth and passing of the Maharshi (Jayanti and Aradhana), which fall respectively at the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

There is a Puranic story about the origin of the hill. Once Vishnu and Brahma fell to disputing which of them was the greater. Their quarrel brought chaos on earth, so the Devas approached Siva and besought him to settle the dispute. Siva thereupon manifested himself as a column of light from which a voice issued declaring that whoever could find its upper or lower end was the greater. Vishnu took the form of a boar and burrowed down into the earth to find the base, while Brahma took the form of a swan and soared upwards to seek its summit. Vishnu failed to reach the base of the column but “beginning to see within himself the Supreme Light which dwells in the hearts of all, he became lost in meditation, oblivious to the physical body and even unaware of himself, the one who sought”. Brahma saw a Thazhampoo flower falling through the air and, thinking to win by deception, returned with it and declared he had plucked it from the summit.

Vishnu admitted his failure and turned to the Lord in praise and prayer: “You are Self-knowledge. You are OM. You are the beginning and the middle and the end of everything. You are everything and illuminate everything.” He was pronounced great while Brahma was exposed and confessed his fault.

In this legend, Vishnu represents the intellect and Brahma the ego, while Siva is Atma, the spirit.

The story continues that, because the lingam or column of light was too dazzling to behold, Siva manifested himself instead as the Arunachala hill, declaring: “As the moon derives its light from the sun, so other holy places shall derive their sanctity from Arunachala. This is the only place where I have taken this form for the benefit of those who wish to worship me and obtain illumination. Arunachala is OM itself. I will appear on the summit of this hill every year at Kartigai in the form of a peace-giving beacon.” This refers not only to the sanctity of Arunachala itself but also to the pre-eminence of the doctrine of Advaita and the path of Self-enquiry of which Arunachala is the center. One can understand this meaning in Sri Bhagavan’s saying, “In the end everyone must come to Arunachala.”

THE FLOWER WAS GIVEN THE ‘SHAAPA VIMOCHANA’ THAT ONCE A YEAR, FOR SHIVARATRI DAY, THE FLOWER WILL BE USED FOR SHIVA PUJA, NOT ANY OTHER TIME. EVEN NOW, IN TIRUVANNAMALAI, THE LINGODBHAVA WILL BE WORSHIPPED WITH ‘TAAZHAM POO’ ONLY ON SHIVARATRI DAY. YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE DEEPER LAYERS AND MEANING. #Salem, #TamilNadu is a city of temples. The city has many beautiful, unique and historic temples which are famous all over the world. One of which is 1008 lingam temple. Located in Ariyanoor, a suburb of Salem city, 1008 Lingam Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in the country. It has 1007 shiv lingam, which surrounds the main temple of Shiva, and the main shiv linga in the center. It was created and now maintained by the private department of Vinayaka Mission. The temple was constructed in 2010, by Vinayaka Mission, who is very much active in educational sector. The Vinayaka Mission has started and manages various colleges, who provide undergraduate and graduate studies in different fields. About 1008 Lingam Temple: #1008LingamTemple is located in Ariyanoor, which is a suburb of Salem city on a hillock near Kunjmaala. The temple is managed by a separate dept. of Vinayaka Mission. The temple was constructed in 2010. The temple has 1007 lingams which surrounds the main shiv temple, which has the 1008th lingam with the holy cow Nandi’s statue in front. For visiting the temple, you have to go on Sangagiri to Salem highway, just after crossing the institutions of Vinayaka Mission. When you cross the gate of Temple, you can see an enormous statue of Ganesha at the foothills. The security guard is very helpful and guides you to the road you have to take for going on the top. You can take your vehicle to the top of the hillock, but if you walk you can enjoy the scenic surroundings and visit each lingam and offer your prayers. Every lingam is named after the thousand names of the Lord Shiva. While walking or driving your vehicle to the top, you can also catch a glimpse of the Sangagiri Mountains. These mountains and the surrounding greenery create an ethereal sense of peace and serenity in your mind and soul. In addition of the lingams, the beautiful sculptures of Lord Muruga are interspersed in the area and are maintained very well by the administrators of the temple. On the top of the hillock, you can see a magnificent and huge main statue of Sri Umaiyambigai Samedha Sri Arunachala Sundareswara. Arunachala Smarana Shakthi which is beyond any remembrance or forgetfulness, JagatJanani, Jagadhathrilokanayaki, Krunashini, MahaMaari, Kannapurathu Kannathal, Aarur Kamalai, Kailasa Swamini, Meenakshi, I opened My Eyes here. Giving the boons to those who asked, to give good Life of Jnana, I came. I will do only good. I will do it today itself.

You are asking for the war and suffering to be over between Israel and Palestine. Daughter, as time has come for the two demons to fight with each other and destroy themselves, this war is happening. This will not be over. It will rage and is going to spread all over the world as Third War. Know this is the seed that has grown for the Third War that is going to be within three years.

You are asking what to do to destroy Corona. Daughter, listen properly. Not only to you, keeping you in the front, I am telling to the whole world. I am telling all goodness, listen everyone. To save people from Corona, I made a huge ship which is Anandasarovar, Vaidyasarovar and Nithyananda Linga. I made it in Adi Kailasa. Go there. Take bath everyday. Worship the way of Nithyananda and do good seva to all those who come. This is for all of you to save yourself and save the world, this is the good seva and this is what is needed today. Live blissfully having prosperity. Go and come. Do not have fear.

You are asking that you have protected your family from Corona till now and how to protect hereafter. Listen properly. Third deadly wave of Corona is going to start in Purattasi (English month-September). Before it comes, go to Adi Kailasa. Free yourself from the world for three months and do good puja to Nithyanandeshwara, do Sashtra Adyayana along with Nithya Dhyana, and do Chathur Masya fearlessly, Auspiciousness will happen to Jnana and shakthi, and opening way for world seva and truth, you will have all four goodness- dharma, artha, kama, moksha, all four goodness will happen. You are asking which country is safe to escape from Third World War. Listen to everything which is said. War in Middle East, Deadly Corona in India, and Rising Sea Level, protection from all these three is one and only Kailasa. Only it is good for life. If possible, come and reach. Om Om Om.

You are asking why God is giving so much suffering to you. Foolish mind, foolish Humans! Listen properly. God will do only good, but for the foolish delusive things done by humans to destroy among themselves, why you are making God responsible for it? Go save yourself. Go.

You are asking how other countries could protect Bharatha from Corona. Daughter, with great compassion, I am telling the truths as it is. Listen properly, favourite daughter, wealthy daughter. Corona deadly infection along with Black Fungal Disease to destroy the lungs, created as a bio weapon, it has been imposed on India as a bio war. Third huge deadly corona wave is going to come in Purattasi(English month- September) on India. No country can save. No one can save. The doors of Adi Kailasa will be open for all those who come with trust. It will protect. It will protect life. It will protect body and will give conscious health. It will also give Highest Powers. Dharma, Artha, Moksha, Jnana, Powers, Kama and the God beyond Kama, Adi Kailasa life will give all goodnesss.

Before one year, told people to save themselves by doing firewalking in all our temples, for those who did not listen, today when more and more suffering is coming, not able to face the suffering, not able to bear the suffering, I am seeing them withering. As great compassion is overflowing, I am again and again giving good way and boon. For the devotees asking, I am giving them what they ask and also giving boons and also giving way. I will do whatever needed to be done. For those who listen with integrity, save your life and also receive prosperity. Let goodness happen. Let good happen. Let the Creation be protected from Pralaya. Bharatha has to be saved. Even if disgrace comes to India, it is Mother Parashakthi My decision that Bharatha has to be protected. Om Om Om. Let Goodness happen. Let Bliss consequence. The great compassion of Mother is overflowing in the front and showering the whole world. Devotees! Ambigai I am with you.

For devotees and disciples, giving truth, happiness, goodness, fortune and life to you all, I am telling the truth, I will destroy difficulties. Thinking Paramashiva of heart, make your heart as a cotton. Destroying the black fungus that does poison, I am protecting that Corona deadly infection does not enter your lungs. Keeping Omkara in Third Eye, do Trinetra Kumbakha. Keeping Atmalinga inside your palm, joining both your hands, everyday permanently do Omkara Meditation. Chant Omkara as ajapajapa.

You are asking remedy for Black Fungal disease. Know properly, black fungal disease not only it will affect lungs, it will smash brain also, it is a bio weopon that makes humans a lifeless matter and push them to death. This is a bio war imposed on humans. The water, turmeric, milk, neem juice poured on Navapashana Linga is the medicine for this. Protection of Ambigai is there for those Intaking this and pouring it on body and taking bath.

For the creation not to be in loss, I clearly told the Deva Rahasya to the world. When I told these Rahasya(secret) to world in the form of Nithyananda, for the enemies not to destroy the form of Nithyananda in anger, after protecting His Form by bringing Him to Kailasa, after that I am telling these truths to the world. The demonishness and atrocities of humans is dancing in the world that even Mother Parashakthi needs to do self-protection before telling the truths to the world.

ARUNACHALA HILL

Cada um dos centros espirituais da Índia tem o seu próprio caráter e linha de tradição. Entre todos eles está Tiruvannamalai - Arunachala, que representa o mais direto, o mais sem forma e o menos ritualístico dos caminhos, o caminho da Autoinquirição, cujo portal é a iniciação silenciosa. Isso é expresso no antigo ditado Tâmil: “Ver Chidambaram, nascer em Tiruvarur, morrer em Banaras ou mesmo pensar em Arunachala é ter certeza da Libertação”. “Mesmo pensar” porque no caso do caminho direto não é necessário o contato físico. Portanto, não foi por acaso que o Maharshi fez de Tiruvannamalai e sua sagrada Montanha Arunachala o seu lar.

O Maharshi chamou Arunachala de o Coração espiritual do mundo. Aruna, que significa 'vermelho, brilhante como o fogo', não significa o mero fogo que emite calor. Em vez disso, significa Jnanagni, o Fogo da Sabedoria, que não é quente nem frio. Achala significa colina. Assim, Arunachala significa "Colina da Sabedoria".

Tiruvannamalai, situada no sopé de Arunachala, é uma cidade de tamanho médio, 120 milhas (193 Km) a sudoeste de Chennai, uma antiga povoação com um grande e esplêndido templo. Certos festivais anuais atraem grandes multidões de peregrinos de todo o Sul da Índia a Tiruvannamalai. Brahma viu uma flor Thazhampoo a cair no ar e, pensando em vencer mesmo faltando à verdade, regressou com ela e declarou que a havia arrancado do topo.

Vishnu admitiu o seu fracasso e voltou-se para o Senhor em louvor e oração: “Vós sois o Autoconhecimento. Vós sois OM. Vós o começo, o meio e o fim de tudo. Vós sois tudo e iluminais tudo.” Foi declarado que ele era grande enquanto Brahma foi exposto e confessou a sua culpa.

Nesta lenda, Vishnu representa o intelecto e Brahma o ego, enquanto Shiva é Atma, o espírito.

A história conta ainda que, porque o lingam ou coluna de luz era tão deslumbrante que não podia ser contemplada, Shiva se manifestou como a colina de Arunachala, declarando: “Assim como a lua obtém a sua luz do sol, assim também outros lugares sagrados obterão a sua santidade de Arunachala. Este é o único lugar onde tomei esta forma para o benefício daqueles que desejam me adorar e obter iluminação. Arunachala é o próprio OM. Eu irei aparecer no topo desta colina todos os anos em Kartigai na forma de um farol que concede paz.” Isso se refere não apenas à santidade de Arunachala em si, mas também à preeminência da filosofia de Advaita e ao caminho da Auto-Inquirição de que Arunachala é o centro. Pode-se entender esse significado nas palavras de Sri Bhagavan: "No final, todos devem vir a Arunachala."

Descent of Brahma Yogini

From His abode in Kailasa, where Paramashiva resides with His consort. He called forth the most obedient of the 1064 yoginis, who was the manifestation of Parashakti's own blood which fell on the grounds of Planet Earth and became the woman known as Brama Yogini. For thousands of years, she demonstrated her impregnable chastity and Yogic power through intense penance. Having proven her capacity Paramashiva chose her to play a crucial role in His next happening on the Planet Earth. He commanded her as follows:

“O auspicious goddess! Go to the kshetra of all kshetras in Tiruvannamalai, where I originally manifested as the Column of light and start preparing for my descent! There, lives the family in which I have chosen to be born. On the eve of the Mahadeva Ashtami, I will enter into the atmosphere of Earth as the greatest unseen positive nuclear explosion on the Arunachaleshwara Linga. I will then be absorbed into the Mahakalabhairava Deity who resides on the banks of the Brahma Teertham. This form will be too powerful for neither any human being, nor godly being to handle and will surely incinerate them much before being embedded within their womb. Only you, O sinless and chaste, are capable enough to take my form and cool it in the Brahma Teertham.

With the power of all the River Goddesses, Ganga, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri who emerge from the Earth as the Brahma Teertham and who all flow around me in my form as Arunachala, my most intense, plenipotentiary portion, the parama-amśa bhāga, will cool down.Then you can take me to the womb of Ma Lokanayaki, daughter of Raju Mudaliar and wife of Sri Arunachalam and allow My form to enter in her womb.

Recognizing you as the supreme and the one who facilitated My Happening on the Planet, all over the World of Bhu your form will be worshipped and cherished. Go now and do not forget the purpose with which I sent you!

When commanded by the Lord thus, Brahma Yogini accepted it with the words, ‘Yes ! That will be done’.

After circumambulating Him once and prostrating her body at His feet, she went down to the earth, took birth as the one who would be known as Mata Vibhutananda Puri, and executed His orders.

In the physical plane the birth Brahma Yogini was a miraculous feat, which confounded all who heard the story. For years , her mother was unable to conceive a child. She sought out the blessings of the enlightened being, Seshadri Swamigal from Tiruvannamalai, who was the illumined contemporary of Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi. In his enlightened state of consciousness, nothing of the outer world affected him in any way. Therefore, Seshadri Swamigal used to always sit in an area full of trash. Mathaji Vibhutananda Puri’s mother humbly approached Seshadri Swamigal in this place and requested his blessings for her to conceive a child. The great Mahapurusha simply placed a handful of the dust from where he was sitting into the devoted lady’s hands. She swallowed the handful of dirt whole, and it metamorphosed into sweet molasses in her mouth.

Within three days of her consuming the dirt, the mother returned to Seshadri Swamigal’s place to inform him that the doctors told her she was carrying and offered her gratitude. Seshadri Swamigal blessed her and declared in Tamil, “Yes, Father is going to come so to prepare him, Mother will come!”

Thus, the divine female child who was born from the mud of trash, termed as “kuppa” in Tamil, was named “Kuppammal”

Life as Kuppammal

Upon assuming the form Kuppammal, Devi Parashakti Herself guided Brahma Yogini to execute her divine mandate, to ready the preparations and birth Paramashiva in the human form. At a young age, Kuppammal had the darshan of Parashakti as Sri Rajarajeshwari, which initiated her into the path of the Shakta sampradaya, the worship of the divine feminine consciousness. She was later on formally initiated and guided in this path by Isakki Swamigal who saw her in her most authentic form and called her by the name "Brahma Yogini". After having her children and raising them, Kupammal started continuously practicing the life of sanyas. She received formal initiation (received the kavi) into sanyas from Hamsananda Puri

Kuppammal lived as a powerful goddess on Planet Earth. Knowing the true purpose of her life, at a young age, she seized control of her reproductive system and did not physically mature. When her family forced her to get married, she willed her body to release only the necessary ovum for her to give birth to four children and did not have a menstrual cycle in between. She was diagnosed with blood cancer at an old age but as the purpose of her life was not fulfilled she did not succumb to the grave illness and healed herself entirely from it. Today, living as a witness to the Yogini, her grandson, Deepak, recalls the mystical and uncanny experience of living with Mathaji Vibhutananda Puri and the Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism during His childhood.

Early on in the life of Brahma Yogini, as she lived as Kuppammal, she was closely associated with the paternal grandmother of the Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism, Anusuyammal. Mata Vibhutananda Puri founded “Apithakuchambal Tiruppugazh Mathar Sabhai”, an all-women entity through which she upkept the ecosystem of Tiruvannamalai, singing and spreading the Ultimate Truths in the sacred Tiruppugazh verses extolling the Glory of The Divine, authored by Saint Arunagirinathar in the 15 century. Anusuyammal was the vice president of this organization. The team was supported by the enthusiastic people of Tiruvannamalai who gathered in large numbers for her public group concerts. She also raised funds door to door and prepared food from the collected funds and served anna daan - free food - for the people. This women only sangha took responsibility to care for the welfare of women in Tiruvannamalai and therefore had a crucial role in maintaining the enlightenment eco-system of Tiruvannamalai such that it would be prepared and ready for the Advent of The Avatar.

Glory of Tiruvannamalai The kshetra of Tiruvannamalai is the very place on Earth which Paramashiva declared as his home thousands of years ago in the three Divine forms - the sacred Hill Arunachala, the linga Arunachaleshwara and in the form of the Incarnation of Paramashiva who lands time and again in the human body. In a fourth form, which was not declared by Paramashiva and yet still seamlessly manifested, He lives as śivah sarva guhā śayah, - as Shiva, the one who resides in the hearts of all. This is true especially among the townspeople of Tiruvannamalai for whom Arunachala is antaryāmi, their most Supreme Lord and their most intimate partner, making it possible for Paramashiva to appear again and again as one among them. Adhering to His most compassionate boon for humanity, Paramashiva Himself comes down to Planet Earth and guides Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma in creating the enlightened civilization of Tiruvannamalai. Since then, this place has been serving not just as a beacon for the human beings who seek the most supreme truth but as the cosmic beacon of light which allows for otherworldly beings to descend and ascend the 14 planes of existence and ultimately unite with Paramashiva Himself in the primordial form. History of Tiruvannamalai

Tiruvannamalai — My Birthplace

Tiruvannamalai or Arunachala is a temple town in South India, established by Paramaśiva Himself is the birthplace of The Avatar, His Divine Holiness Nithyananda Paramashivam. Arunācala is the Hill-form of Paramaśiva around which the temple and settlement happened here. It is the promise of Paramaśiva that He will be available in three forms continuously for humanity in Tiruvannamalai; mountain-form called Arunachala, worshippable Shiva linga-form called Arunachaleshwara, and as a living incarnation to guide humanity. The Avatar is the current incarnation of Paramaśiva who assumed the human form in Tiruvannamalai. The historical happening of Paramaśiva’s promise is described below.

Paramaśiva appears to resolve dispute between Brahma and Viṣṇu

Tiruvannamalai or Arunācala, my birthplace, is the only land carrying an unbroken lineage of enlightened beings.

In ancient Hindu Purāṇas, there is a story of an argument between Lord Brahma the Creator and Lord Viṣṇu the Sustainer, as to which of them was greater. (Brahma and Viṣṇu are two of the three Gods who comprise the Trinity of the Hindu pantheon of divinity, Paramaśiva being the third.)

Brahma says, “I am greater, because only if I create, you even have a job to do!” Viṣṇu says, “No, I am greater because only if I protect, what you create will even be available. And I only created you!” Brahma incarnated from Viṣṇu’s navel . So Viṣṇu says, “I am your father. Think about that before you speak.” When the fight becomes too much, it is time to go to the Supreme Court — Paramaśiva!

Shiva appeared before them in his Viśvarūpa — his cosmic form — as an endless shaft of light. The two ends of the shaft that were his head and his feet could not be seen. He looked at them and said, “Whoever can find either of my ends is the greater of the two of you.” (In the photograph, the deity form of the light shaft is shown)

So Brahma took the form of a swan and flew up towards Shiva’s head, and Viṣṇu went downwards as a boar, burrowing into the earth to find Shiva’s feet. They searched for many yugas (ages).

Viṣṇu Surrenders; Brahma falls into non-acceptance

After much effort, Viṣṇu realized that he could not find what he sought and decided to surrender his ego to Shiva. He told Shiva to forgive his arrogance in trying to find the limits of the Divine form. Shiva blessed him for his honesty. Sādāśiva blessed Viṣṇu with enlightenment because his ego left him.

Brahma, however, could not accept his failure. On his way up, he saw a flower (screwpine or tazhampoo in Tamil) falling down and asked the flower where it was coming from. The flower said it had fallen from behind Shiva’s ear. Brahma asked, “How long have you been traveling?” The flower replied, “I have been falling for four ages (lifetimes) of Brahma!” Brahma was shocked and realized he had no hopes of finding Shiva’s head, but he still did not want to accept his failure.

The lie and Shiva’s lesson

Brahma decided that he would tell Shiva a lie about finding this flower on his ear. He then asked the flower to bear witness that he had brought it down from Shiva’s head. The flower, having little choice, and afraid to refuse Brahma, the Lord of all Creation, agreed. Returning to Shiva, who again assumed his normal form, Brahma announced that he had seen Shiva’s head and had brought back this flower as his witness.

Shiva instantly knew what had happened and was angry at the lie told to him. He punished Brahma, saying, “For the lie that you have uttered, you will be never again be worshipped by the people.” He punished the screwpine flower saying, “You will never ever be used as an offering to me in worship.”

Brahma asks for forgiveness, Paramaśiva heeds

Brahma and the flower ask for forgiveness. Brahma takes a bath in the Brahmatīrtha, which is there in the temple in Tiruvannamalai, and offers pūjā to Annamalayar (presiding deity form of Paramaśiva in the temple). Paramaśiva’s curse on him dissolves. That is why you will find Brahma’s shrine in all Shiva temples facing the northern direction, exactly in the spot where the Paramaśiva deity’s abhiśeka water (holy bath water) flows out. It signifies the absolving of the curse. And to date, they don’t use the tazhampoo for pūjā in any Shiva temple. In the Tiruvannamalai temple, they use it for pūjā only during Śivarātri — the day this incident happened. To this day, there are no major temples dedicated to Brahma, the Creator; and the screwpine flower is never offered to Shiva in worship.

Both Viṣṇu and Brahma requested Shiva to retain his form as that shaft of light to bless the universe. At their request, Shiva, in that form of Divine Light, became Arunācala, the glowing mountain in Tiruvannamalai!

Arunācala Purāṇa — the epic history of Arunācala — reveals that at that point in time, Lord Shiva made a promise that He will always be available in Arunācala (or Tiruvannamalai) in three forms: as the hill Arunācala, as the jyotirlingam — the Arunācaleśvara Śivaliṅga deity in the temple, and in the form of living incarnations in this holy town of Tiruvannamalai.

True to his promise, Paramaśiva retained his form as the Arunācala mountain, assumed the form of the Śivaliṅga called Arunācaleśvara, at the temple in Tiruvannamalai and is incarnating continuously keeping the unbroken lineage of enlightened beings in Tiruvannamalai till date. Each incarnation is unique

As per the promise given by Paramaśiva, He continues to appear here as living incarnations from time immemorial. And it is not that one person trains the other. It is not that Ramana Maharshi trained YogiRamsuratkumar or Seshadri Swamigal trained Ramana Maharśi. All of them were svayambhūs — natural incarnations. But the chain never got cut. It is like in the Zen tradition. Only in the Zen tradition, enlightenment happens without training, and no two people will be alike. If you see, in Hinduism, if you take the Ṣankarācārya lineage, all of them wear the cloth in the same way and holding the staff in the same way. In all traditions, it is like they have been taken out of the same mould. In the Zen tradition, each flower is unique, but it is a fully blossomed flower! The Tiruvannamalai tradition is like the Zen tradition. Each incarnation is unique. (In the photograph are seen the immediate predecessors of The Avatar in the lineage. Seated in the helm is Ārunagiri Yogeeśvara, who is Paramasiva Himself, the first incarnation in the lineage)

Significance of the Happening

There is a great significance in this story: You cannot attain nithyananda — eternal bliss — with either intellect or with money! Going upwards (like Brahma) is rajas (passion without value). Going downwards (like Viṣṇu) is tamas (inertia or lethargy). You cannot attain enlightenment with those two attributes. Viṣṇu represents wealth. If you run in life thinking you can attain enlightenment with money, you will end up in depression of success after a certain age. That is Viṣṇu’s ego getting destroyed in the story. Brahmas represents knowledge. These professional seekers who read any book they see and go to any guru, are like Brahma. Not only will they not get enlightened, they will collect false evidences to support that! This is the teaching from the story.

In the Arunācala Purāṇa, which is part of Skandha Purāṇa, he says, “In the mountain-form that will be visible to all your eyes, in the Arunācaleśvara linga-form which all of you can touch and offer pūjā and worship, and as a living Guru to give enlightenment to all of you, I will continue to exist.” That is why for the past 2000 years, the unbroken chain of enlightened masters continues to exist here.

The Pull of Arunācala!

The following is verse 1 of the Tamil text ANNAMALAI VENBA written by a Saint Guru Namasivayar describing the Arunachala mountain

- ANNAMALAI VENBA (Verse 1), Guru Namasivayar

It is said, by seeing Chidambaram, or by being born in Tiruvarur, or by dying in Kasi, or by merely ‘thinking’ of Arunācala, one will attain Liberation. Just ‘remembrance’ of Arunācala will liberate! Understand deeply: This mountain is not an ordinary mountain. If we keep a receiving station, it will receive any type of wave or signal right? Like that, this sacred place is the place that pulls incarnations.

Spiritual runway and incubator for incarnations

When a baby is born prematurely, they place the baby in an incubator. The incubator has the same temperature as the mother’s womb. They give the baby food in it. The incubator takes complete care of the baby. Only if that incubator is there, the baby can become healthy. Like that, for an incarnation to descend and settle in the human body, the spiritual incubator is what is Tiruvannamalai. Our ancestors have done this for incarnations to descend and settle in the body. It is like an airport.

In an airport, can the flight directly land and halt? You need a runway, right? In the same way, when the formless Existence descends into a human form, it descends like the Ganga; like a thunderbolt! It has to descend, apply the brakes and settle with the body. Tiruvannamalai is the runway for that. It is the spiritual incubator, spiritual runway, spiritual airport. It is the spiritual airport created for incarnations to descend. Not only that, it is a strong attraction…!

Spiritual lighthouse

Whenever I remember power, I remember the top of Arunācala Hill. That is the expression of the power — the Big Bang — when Mahādeva stood as a light shaft. Arunācala is the spiritual lighthouse, which attracts enlightened beings. It is here that Shiva manifested instantaneously as a Linga of fire with no beginning, no end: the Jyotirlinga Mountain — Arunācala.

Please understand: how in the ocean, if the boats are lost they see the light house and reach the shore safely where they need to reach, I could see, the souls who are lost in the cosmic darkness, the moment they see these lighthouses they land in those houses or in those areas and continue their spiritual journey. I myself used Arunācala as the light house to land, to do what I want to do.

Bhagavān Ramana Maharśi on Arunācala

Bhagavān Ramana Maharśi, predecessor to His Divine Holiness explains, “’Aruna’ — ‘A’, ‘RU’, ‘NA’ signifies Sat, Chit, and Ananda (Being, Consciousness and Bliss), or again the Supreme Self, the individual Self, and their union as the One Absolute, expressed in the Mahavakya ‘That art thou’.”

Bhagavān Ramana Maharśi himself has translated the Skandha Purāṇa to Tamil. The following translation is found on page 80 of his ‘Collected Works of Bhagavān Ramana Maharśi’:

Paramaśiva said: “Though in fact fiery, my lacklustre appearance as a hill on this spot is an act of grace and loving solicitude for the maintenance of the world; here I always abide as the Great One (Siddha). Remember that in the interior of my Heart is transcendental glory with all the enjoyments of the world.”

Tiruvannamalai — My Birthplace

Paramaśiva appears to resolve dispute between Brahma and Viṣṇu

Tiruvannamalai or Arunācala, my birthplace, is the only land carrying an unbroken lineage of enlightened beings.

So Brahma took the form of a swan and flew up towards Shiva’s head, and Viṣṇu went downwards as a boar, burrowing into the earth to find Shiva’s feet. They searched for many yugas (ages).
