The migrant shipwreck near Greece is a horrible tragedy – but it wasn’t an accident
“The Greek coast guard’s conflicting account states that the vessel was first spotted by Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, at midday on Tuesday, June 13. It claims that once it achieved contact, those on board repeatedly stated that ‘the boat was not in danger, they wanted no help other than food and water, and that they wished to continue on to Italy.’ The coast guard states that at 1:40 a.m., the boat ceased moving, and at 2:04 a.m., a coast guard floating vessel reported that the trawler had capsized.
“International legal experts have noted that even if those on board the trawler said they did not want to be rescued, the coast guard had the obligation to independently evaluate if it was seaworthy and intervene if it was not. Photos of the trawler show that it was clearly overpacked, those on board did not appear to be wearing life vests, and the vessel was not flying any flag …
“These tragedies are no accident, but a product of political choices. Over the past decade, the EU has reduced access to asylum and made arriving on the continent ever more difficult — increasing policing and surveillance along its borders, erecting and expanding walls, and illegally pushing back thousands of people …
“There are years of evidence that Greece and Frontex regularly engage in and cooperate on illegal pushbacks — pushing migrants back over the border despite their right to seek asylum. In recent years, these pushbacks have been stepped up, both on the country’s northern land border and at sea. Those caught on the northern border are usually beaten, robbed of their phones and all their valuables, often stripped naked, and put in boats on the river Évros. People who arrive on Greek islands are usually gathered up, put on rubber boats, and abandoned at sea. Boats intercepted in the Aegean Sea are often damaged or have their engines removed, or else the Hellenic Coast Guard will simply tow them back to Turkish waters.”

EU begins efforts on migration and asylum pact
The European Union launched working on the details of its new market-wide pact on migration and asylum, Emerging Risks reproted.
Following last week’s European Parliament elections, a political shift to the right in countries such as France, Germany and the Netherlands has begun work on making the Migration and Asylum Pact agreement a reality.
The European Union said it has begun work to “translate a large and complex set of legislative acts into an operational reality over the next two years.”
The Common Implementation Plan for the Migration and Asylum Pact, adopted by the Commission this week, sets out key milestones for all Member States to build the legal and operational capacities needed to successfully implement the new legislation by the middle of 2026. For instance, Member States must submit national asylum plans by December, which will come into force in 2026. The rules will tighten the bloc’s borders for irregular migrants, who will face faster screening procedures and expedited deportation.
In addition, countries must set up new border centres to detain migrants while their asylum requests are prepared and processed. The new rules also require an EU country to accept thousands of asylum seekers from frontline states such as Italy and Greece, or instead provide money or other resources to countries under pressure.
We are presenting a blueprint for the next two years of work to help make the Pact on Migration and Asylum a reality on the ground. This is further testament to the Commission’s determination to spare no effort in ensuring Member States have all the expertise, operational and financial support they need to turn legal commitments into practice, according to Margaritis Schinas, vice-president for Promoting our European Way of Life.

It’s extremely troubling and depressing when I look at the comments on any internet post that even vaguely alludes to global south migration to a predominantly-white country and the overall consensus of commenters is essentially “I don’t care if these people are refugees or asylum-seekers… I’d prefer they had died en masse than have come to my country”. Nationalism is dangerously being put above the value of human life for human life’s sake (again) and I find it hard to believe I’m living in the year 2024 living among such backwards tribalism.

British Nazi Millwall fans visiting Warsaw today, taking part in an annual nationalist Independence March demonstration . Real "patriots" with Nazi slogans on their banner. Many from the same firm were out today in London answering Braverman's call like good, obedient dogs.

I'm rusty on my art history... what's the beef between Camille Claudel and Rodin??
oh it's a complicated story but she was both his pupil and lover and she was drove mad by her fear of living in his shadow. it's not really a beef, more like a tragic story. in the end, she destroyed a lot of her art and now people hardly know her name. ofc, for a long time, history of art would rather remember the name of rodin than claudel anyway.

Last summer, a shocking video of asylum seekers cable-tied and blindfolded in the back of a van on a Greek holiday island went viral online. At the time, the veracity of the video was questioned and Theodosis Nikitaras, the mayor of Kos, filed a defamation case against the NGO that published it. Now, new documents obtained from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) confirm the incident and pin the responsibility on individuals it describes as “likely working in concert” with Greek authorities. The 44-second video was published by the Aegean Boat Report NGO on June 26, 2023, the same day the incident took place. Since then, it has been seen by more than 660,000 people on X. The NGO, which regularly reports allegations of human rights abuses at Greece’s sea borders with Turkey, said it had received the video from the people inside the van. They included a child and many of them were Palestinians having arrived as asylum seekers from Turkey to Kos. One woman had managed to conceal a phone in her bra and contacted the NGO via WhatsApp pleading for help. In a video she sent, the people are told to “shut up” in Greek by two unidentified men in the van after asking for the toilet. There were 13 people in the van in total, according to Frontex.

Rishi Sunak: new draft law on asylum in Rwanda will prevent litigation
At an emergency press conference, Rishi Sunak said his new Rwanda law would prevent prosecutions and allow him to fly finally to Rwanda, The Guardian reports.
The Prime Minister said the bill “fundamentally” addressed the apex court’s concerns over deportation policies and ensured the African country is “unequivocally” safe for asylum seekers.
His irate remarks followed a chaotic 24 hours in which his immigration minister, Robert Jenrick, quit over the proposed new law, claiming it did not go far enough. The move was a major blow to the prime minister’s authority, who has come under increasing pressure from the right-wing Tories.
Releasing rebels from the Tories to vote against him, Sunak said he would not see the legislation as a vote of confidence in his leadership. With Labour already saying it would oppose the plans, it would only take 29 Tory MPs to vote against it.
Sunak said the legislation would be an “effective deterrent” to people coming to the UK illegally and would restore public confidence in the system in an attempt to contain a growing right-wing rebellion in the Conservative Party.
