RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — More than half a million people in Gaza — a quarter of the population — are starving, according to a report Thursday by the U.N. and other agencies that highlights the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s bombardment and siege on the territory in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. The extent of the population’s hunger eclipsed even the near-famines in Afghanistan and Yemen of recent years, according to figures in the report. The report warned that the risk of famine is “increasing each day,” blaming the hunger on insufficient aid entering Gaza. “It doesn’t get any worse,’’ said Arif Husain, chief economist for the U.N.’s World Food Program. “I have never seen something at the scale that is happening in Gaza. And at this speed.” ... At the start of the war, Israel stopped all deliveries of food, water, medicine and fuel into the territory. After U.S. pressure, it allowed a trickle of aid in through Egypt. Layan Albaz is one of thousands of Palestinian children who had lost limbs in Israeli air strikes since October 7—and one of the very few evacuated to the U.S. for medical care.

The average U.S. public school has about 550 students. Imagine eight or nine schools in an area roughly the size of Philadelphia where every kid is missing at least one limb. Imagine also that their amputations happened alongside a torrent of other tragedies: the loss of family members, friends, neighbors, schools, houses.

Now imagine that the only hope to reclaim some semblance of physical normalcy required those children to leave home. Gaza’s sole manufacturer of prosthetics and its affiliated rehabilitation center were destroyed in an air strike months ago; as a result, many families of children who have lost limbs are trying to evacuate them so they can receive medical care abroad. Social media is brimming with their desperate pleas, and only a few get what amounts to a lucky ticket for the mortally unlucky: Countries willing to take pediatric amputees from Gaza are doing so in relatively small numbers.

The kids who do find a way out board planes for distant places. In Layan’s case, that place was more than 6,000 miles away from everything and everyone she knew.

Right now, we are a group of transgender refugees in a camp in Africa, struggling to survive. We barely have access to food, medication, or basic necessities. Many of us are suffering from H.pylori infections due to unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation. We are also battling typhoid and malaria without access to proper medical care. On top of this, transphobia within the refugee camp prevents us from working or securing shelter, we are forced to sleep outside because we lack enough shelter to accommodate us which isn’t safe . • ... “urgent and extended humanitarian pauses” in the fighting throughout Gaza and the opening of corridors inside the enclave “for a sufficient number of days to enable full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access.” • U.N. Secretary General António Guterres to appoint a senior coordinator “with responsibility for facilitating, coordinating, monitoring, and verifying in Gaza, as appropriate, the humanitarian nature” of all assistance, and demands that “the parties to the conflict cooperate with the coordinator to fulfill their mandate without delay or obstruction.” • ... “immediate and unconditional” release of the hostages. Although the resolution's language was toned down, this is a sign of progress. While such measures are long overdue and should have been honored from the start, we must do everything possible to meet the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza and relieve unfathomable suffering.

Dear friends, donors, supporters, and well-wishers,

We are a group of people from Sudan who fled our homeland due to conflict. Initially, we were over 500, but after a long and dangerous journey, only 120 of us made it to South Sudan. Sadly, not everyone survived, and it breaks our hearts to see our numbers continue to decline. Now, we are 110 people, desperately trying to reach Uganda for safety.

We are urgently seeking your help to make this journey. We have been stranded here for a long time, facing starvation and a lack of medical care. Many of our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers have already passed away. With no one else to turn to, we are reaching out to you for support.

To reach Uganda, each person needs $500, which will cover:

• $300 for transport

• $70 for food during the journey

• $120 for basic survival needs after arriving in Uganda

Since we are far from South Sudan’s capital, Juba, our journey will take four days. First, we must reach Juba, then travel for two days to Uganda. Once there, we will not stay in the capital, Kampala, but move directly to other areas for safety.

With 110 people, we need $55,000 to complete this journey. We also have 17 dogs and 8 cats, and while we would never want to leave them behind, we will do our best to bring them with us.

We could have moved earlier, but our GoFundMe has received only small donations, which have helped with medical care but not enough to escape.

THIS IS WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT NOW—TO SURVIVE.
