Peace and Serenity in the Canadian Rockies (Jasper National Park)
flickr
Peace and Serenity in the Canadian Rockies (Jasper National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: With the nearby trees, the river and a mountain backdrop, this image was a peaceful view. It was at a bend in the Athabasca River. Mount Fryatt and the other peaks of the Hooker Icefield Range are the backdrop. One can see both vibrant colors in the trees and contrasts coming in the shadows and such on the mountainside, which I also noticed, But in the end for me, it was the peaceful setting int he Canadian Rockies that drew me into this image.

"STRUCK OIL ON THE ATHABASCA," The Morning Leader (Regina). October 7, 1912. Page 2. --- GAS AS WELL AS OIL FOUND IN PAYING QUANTITIES NEAR FORT MCKAY ---- EDMONTON, Alta., Oct. 6. - Representatives of the Athabasca Oil Company, Ltd., with head offices in Vancouver, B.C., announce that oil in commercial quantities and of high grade and a flow of gas has been struck at a depth of 62 feet, eight miles south of Fort McKay on the Athabasca River, where the concern has 4,000 acres of land under lease. It is given out that thorough exploration will be made next year, beginning early in the spring. The company has had borers at work the last two years.
From observations made it is believed that the oil bearing strata at an average depth of 62 feet below the surface covers an unlimited area. the In estimation of the engineers in charge of the drills, and from tests made in which the slope of the land, the nature of the soil and the comparative value of the two samples taken from the hole of last year and that of this year, there is an oil bearing strata growing gradually farther from the surface toward the south as the land slopes toward the north. The hole sunk last year was not drilled to a greater depth than 100 feet. The samples taken at the same depth in the present test hole are said to be similar to that found last year, while when the hole was sunk to 140 feet the soil was said to be of a much thinner consistency and much more valuable
A strata of oil bearing sand, wider but less productive, was encountered at similar depth a few miles south of the present boring last year, but was abandoned and a new bore started and sunk 140 feet. Samples of sand obtained are exceptionally good and a test will be made at once to arrive at the exact percentage of oil. The actual strength of the flow has never been tested, but the drillers who are experts, declare the flow is sufficient to warrant development and will be of commercial value.

Athabasca River at Moonrise Panorama by Alan Dyer Via Flickr: A panorama of the glacier-fed Athabasca River and peaks around Mount Fryatt in Jasper National Park, as the Milky Way is setting and the waning gibbous Moon rising, lighting the peaks of the Continental DIvide with lunar alpenglow. Mount Fryatt is at centre, while to the right is Mount Geraldine, and to the left are Brussels Peak and Mount Christie. I shot this on a fine night on October 15, 2022 from the "Goats and Glaciers" Viewpoint on the Icefields Parkway. Jupiter, large and fuzzy in some thin cloud, is at far left, while Saturn is left of centre over Mount Christie. The bright area in the Milky Way over Mount Fryatt is the Scutum Starcloud. Altair is the bright star at top. Some green airglow tints the sky at left, while some red airglow or possibly low-level aurora tints the sky at right. The location is called Goats and Glaciers because mountain goats are often here enjoying the salt lick deposits. This is a blend of three 3-section panoramas: - the first taken with a Star Adventurer Mini for 3 x 2-minute tracked exposures for the sky at ISO 800 starting about 9 pm; - the second immediately afterward with the tracker off for 3 x 3-minutes at ISO 800 for the ground; - and the third taken about an hour later as the Moon rose lighting the peaks for 3 x 2.5-minutes at ISO 1600. All with the Canon RF15-35mm lens at f/2.8 and 15mm and Canon R5, and with the camera not moving location between image sets. So this is a time blend, combining frames taken an hour apart, to retain the dark sky with the Milky Way before moonrise, blended with the alpenglow at moonrise. However, most of the landscape comes from the earlier panorama lit only by starlight. Panoramas stitched in Adobe Camera Raw and blended and masked in Photoshop.
