In Plagiarism and You(Tube), Hbomb says "If you consider something so obscure you can get away with stealing it, you do not respect it." Save that line for the next time someone tries to tell you that Roy Lichtenstein brought respect to comics as art.

It's since been pointed out that while Lichtenstein did copy one of Russ Heath's drawings of an airplane getting hit, the painting depicted above was actually copied off Irv Norvick, because Lichtenstein did this so many times to so many comic artists.

In Lichtenstein's defense, he was doing this in a time when comic artists frequently weren't even credited in the issues themselves. In his condemnation, he never even tried to check, nor has he made any move to pay or credit any of the comic artists who recognized their own work later on. Rather than elevating the "low art" of comics, he was widening the gap of financial success and respect even further.

The Hbomberguy of this story is art historian David Barsalou, who has now spent decades tracking down the original art and the names of the original artists used in Lichtenstein's most famous output. Here's the flickr gallery for the Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein project. Frequently copied were Tony Abruzzo, Ted Galindo, Mike Sekowsky, Joe Kubert, Jerry Grandenetti, and dozens more Golden Age artists who aren't very well known in comics circles, let alone art history books. Many of them died in poverty. That's something that the Hero Initiative, mentioned in Russ Heath's comic above, aims to prevent.

Also, Lichtenstein didn't even paint Ben-Day dots. That's a specific thing.

you know, for all of their differences it occurred to me that one of the things buck and tommy have in common and something that is core to both of their characters is how they show up for people. people they haven’t been in contact with for a while (tommy with chim and by extension bobby, hen, athena); people they just recently met (buck with abby, eddie, red, etc and tommy with buck); people they don’t even know (buck - and by extension, tommy - with billy boils). and often times (i’d even argue the vast majority of the time) it’s without expectation of anything in return; a selfless gesture done because they care.

like you have one guy who planned a funeral (with a whole suit + eulogy and plus one) for a long-dead cowboy he didn’t know just so the cowboy could get a proper goodbye. the one he never got. and he gave a grumpy old man he had just met one big last hoorah after learning he was going to pass (and that’s to name a few instances). and then you have another guy who picked up an old coworker/friend’s call (who he hadn’t talked to in a while) and said yes to stealing a helicopter and flying him and his team through a hurricane (based on a hunch to rescue their (his old) captain—risking his career. and then he stole another helicopter at the drop of a hat about a year later after his ex (the first guy) called him for a favour to help him team (again, to mention two instances).

and of course, there are other factors to be discussed with where this care stems from the both of them. when it comes to buck, we know a lot more as we’ve gotten to know over eight seasons - like his desire to feel wanted and needed - have a purpose - and that being part of why he sometimes feels the need to show up for people but ultimately, it’s also just who he is. someone who cares deeply immensely wholeheartedly and he conveys that through action. with tommy, we don’t have his backstory at that level but we know that he’s made a lot of positive growth over the years since we first met him and has become this loyal, caring guy who anyone can count to show up for them.

so you have these two men—men who have SO much to give; so much care and love and are constantly doing so. constantly showing up, constantly giving and with little to no expectation of anything in return; men who’ve never quite received in the same capacity that they’ve given in and somehow. somehow they found each other. found someone who shows up as much as they themselves do. and they got to love each other. got to be loved by each other. like. meant to be.

out of curiosity, did Ludovica and Vasco ended up having children? I know they probably wouldn't like the thought of it much, but I bet their parents would have at least ask again and again about when they're having kids.

They most likely ended up having offspring, initially to give in to their parents' relentless pressuring, but later found out they're both good with children. Right now I'm thinking they had twins, a girl and a boy, and both survived into adulthood.

an interesting detail about the one of many things that count orlok represents in this new adaptation of nosferatu is that the only time we see ellen and thomas engaged in full-on physical intimacy, they are both relatively clothed and it is nighttime. her hair is still up, and the deed is frantic and rushed in their front room. they love each other deeply, that much is clear, but there is something about that level of desire and debasement that is still shameful and out of character for thomas. it is a fight to get him there.

when ellen lures count orlok into her trap and they lay together, they are both naked, and the dawn is quickly approaching. she has taken her hair down, and there is a bed large enough for them both. she has discarded all the trappings of modern society, as has he, and the pace of their coupling is languid. serene, almost. where thomas was not willing to meet her except under pressure, orlok meets her at that place where she has always resided alone. there is no fight or shame, not even in their last living moments.

YES I know it's been months and months since I had a comic, but my secret is that I just wrote like 4 scripts and I'm RARING to go. Now I just have to balance that with cosplay work. :P In the meantime, enjoy another scene I've had in my head for a while and finally got to put on paper!
